Vasant Panchami (Devnagari:वसन्त पञ्चमी), sometimes referred to as Vasant Panchami or Shree Panchami (Devnagari:श्रीपञ्चमी), is a Hindu festival celebrating Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music and art. It is celebrated every year on the fifth day (Panchami) of the Indian month Magh (January-February), the first day of spring. Traditionally during this festival children are taught to write their first words; brahmins are fed; ancestor worship (Pitr-tarpan) is performed; the god of love Kamadeva is worshipped; and most educational institutions organise special prayer for Saraswati. The color yellow also plays an important role in this festival, in that people usually wear yellow garments, Saraswati is worshipped dressed in yellow, and yellow sweets are consumed within the families. Children love flying kites . They enjoy the festival with great fun and enthusiasm.

Appeal - Indian gentleman who has been diagosed with Leukemia

This is an appeal from the family of an Indian gentleman who has been diagosed with Leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant to survive. This is not only a specific appeal for one affected person but more a general appeal to get more people from ethnic background to register and sign on to the appropropriate websites listed in the document. There are currently lack of Asian people on the bone marrow registry, so please help this worthwhile cause and you could be a perfect match and save a human being. Thank you.

Urgent Update - Police Notice - seizure of stolen items

Avon and Somerset police have recently been informed that a large amount of property, mainly Asian jewellery, has been seized by Hertfordshire Constabulary. It is believed this property has been stolen from burglaries across the UK and there is a distinct possibility that some of these burglaries were from Bristol. It is believed the items are from burglaries over the last couple of years, up until May 18th 2011. Bristol Hindu Youth Forum is organising a day trip to Alton Towers theme park on Saturday 20th August.
Come and join us for a fun day with your family and friends and enjoy all the great rides at one of everyone's favourite theme parks.

As you know Raksha Bhandan is coming up on the 13th August. We at The Bristol Hindu Temple would like to extend our best wishes to all on this occassion.

The festival is marked by the tying of a rakhi, or holy thread, by the sister on the wrist of her brother. The brother in return offers a gift to his sister and vows to look after her as she presents sweets to her brother. The brother and sister traditionally feed one another sweets.
