The Maxtra product is as good as it has always been.

The cost, however, has rocketed. Last November I bought 12 Maxtra cartridges from Amazon for £30, this October there was no offer on 12 so I bought two 6-packs for £44, an increase of over 46% within a year.

But this price is still better than you can usually find on the high street and they do seem to last quite well despite constant use with very hard water. Not just calcium, but our mains water sometimes also has excess chlorine which these filters remove successfully.

I feel these cartridges are still acceptable value for money.

Absolutely brilliant coffee machine, makes lovely coffee drinks, very similar taste to the coffee you buy from industrial coffee machines. I especially love the latte (milky) coffee.
It only takes a minute to make a drink, the pods come in different sizes, extra small cup, small cup, medium cup or large cup, I personally wish the pods where all large cups (quantity of coffee) so I just top the drink with extra water which still filtrates through the pod on the press of a button until you have enough, it does make the coffee slightly weaker, but still a great taste.
The only negative is the cost of the coffee pods, they are a bit expensive to buy but I have to say it is well worth it for a "posh coffee", available in most stores, Tesco, Morrison's etc but no a wide range.
I got my machine for £79.00 which included delivery, on doing lots of searching the rrp is usually from £119.00

I'm suspicious about this water meter claim, 28 Sep 2011
First and foremost, this system certainly helps to create excellent tasting water, efficiently removing the components that leave a taint. So five stars on that front. What I am suspicious about is the water meter that is supposed to measure flow. The bars last for four weeks to the day and reduce one bar per week to the day. I have consumed a lot of water one week and used one bar and then another week I have been away for six days and, yes you've guessed it, one bar. Putting it bluntly it's useless. How on earth can something this complex be eco-friendly when we might as well ditch the meter and simply be told to replace the filter once a month. That would save a considerable sum of money too. As for being recyclable that is also a bit of a con. You have to go to your nearest Brita specialist recycling point, which in my case is a round trip of twenty miles. Not impressed.

I have used Brita jugs for years, had to replace my last one a few months ago and chose this model. I have found it extremely disappointing. There are major design flaws: if you fill the filter up to the line the water runs out down the handle; if you try to get a litre of filtered water some of it just sits in the filter part and doesn't get filtered at all; the lid has an opening which is supposed to close automatically but doesn't. I live in a very hard water area and have noticed that limescale builds up in the filter part and develops mould. I wish I had replaced like for like because my old model was far superior to the new one. In fact I am going to throw the new one away and try to replace it with the old model, which was far superior to this one.

I have been looking at brita models, and this is the most advanced. Been using these jugs for years, different models, different capacities. And This is the best, in my oppinion.
The brita meter is an intelligent sensor that calculates the quality of the water, the time and the quantity of water to give you information on when to change the filter (in fact, almost always four weeks).
It's fast, has more capacity to filtered water, and the hole to refill is open down, so it's easier!

Really happy with this kettle, 16 May 2011
Overall I am really happy with this purchase. I would have preferred one of the stainless steel versions of the breville filter kettle as I think they look a little smarter but they're so expensive in comparison to this one which I think is really good value. Looks wise, despite being plastic I think this kettle still manages to look good. I like the blue light when it is boiling. Our water tastes better due to the filter and once I'd read through the instructions for installing the filter cartrdige etc, it is very easy to use. The only thing I would say wasn't ideal is that the lid flops forward when you angle the kettle even slightly to re-fill it - it needs to be a much stiffer mechanism holding it up. You therefore have to hold up the lid if you need to angle it to re-fill. This is no problem if the kettle is cold, but if you have just boiled water it would be too hot to do this. I also cannot comment on the longevity of this kettle as I have only had it for a week. However, generally very pleased with the product's functionality and looks.

I have now had this kettle for a week or so. I chose this one over others because of the design, the light feature and the price. In overall I am satisfied with the product and it does exactly what it is supposed to do. The filter feature makes the water clearly better, and it was a great idea to have it since I live in a hard-water area. It does however take longer to fill it up than it takes to boil. It is not heavy at all since it's made from plastic; this makes it easy to carry it around and practical to use. The light looks cool, however it is not as I expected. I thought the light would turn on once the water starts boiling, but instead it comes on when the kettle is turned on. So I was slightly disappointed because of that. However that's not the biggest problem with this kettle. What I find really annoying is that it does not turn off by itself. Nevertheless it is good enough for a uni student like myself, for the occasional tea or whenever I need some boiled water, fast. In fact it takes about 1 to 2 minutes for the water to be ready. I must say that it is quite noisy. Since this is my first kettle I can't really compare it to anything else. I wouldn't say it's a bad point, because it reminds me that it is on and I can also easily tell whenever it is boiling. As some others have mentioned, steam is created inside of the kettle. So after the first use you can't really see inside of it. Lastly I like how the measurements on the side are in cups and not liters. If you are looking for a good kettle at a decent price, this is it. If you want something more fancy or a specific feature, this might not be the right kettle for you.

I bought this kettle to replace our old one and so far, so good. It has the added advantage of being a kettle and a water filter jug combined, getting rid of that horrible chlorine smell and all related taste, so you get a nice fresh tasting cup of tea/coffee or a fresh tasting glass of water each time, and you don't need a water jug cluttering up the kitchen. You do have to keep refilling the kettle to make sure it's full each time, but that is a small disadvantage, and when it lights up, it looks really smart. The water holder is small, but the cartridge filters quickly and you have to fill it twice to get the kettle to capacity. I bought replacement cartridges for it too, and I can recommend this kettle, it has performed brilliantly so far, and boils very quickly and efficiently. I'd buy it again.

Best kettle I've found for hard water area, 7 Mar 2011
I hate living in a hard water area and one of the many annoyances has been the effect it has on our kettle. We use our kettle quite a bit and even with descaling, purchasing expensive, well made ones, good brands, etc.... it was impossible to get a decent cup of boiled water that didnt have cloudy scum on it and the wear and tear on the kettle was grim. We were lucky to find a kettle that lastes more than a year.

I thought this one, being plastic, would perhaps help as metal ones corroded with the scale. However it was the filter that swung it for us. The kettle is attractive enough - even plastic and all - and it boils water fairly quickly. As long as you change the filter every 4-4.5 weeks, the water boiled remains scale free and clear so we are very happy. While we have only had it a few months, it shows no sign of scaling up on the inside and that is a pleasant novelty for us.

The filter area is at least half the size of the overall kettle but the water does filter quickly through so for cups of tea/coffee it's not an issue. If you need a whole kettle quickly, it can be a slight nuisance to have to fill and filter 2-3 times before kettle is full and the filters aren't that cheap so maintenance of this kettle is much more of an investment but if it lasts longer than an year and provides good quality boiled water than it should be worth it.

After 3 months, so far so good and we're happy with it.

I bought the Brita water filter jug as I was tired of having to suffer limescale in a recently purchased kettle. After only one month the signs of limescale were very evident. So, after discaling the kettle, only filtered water from the jug will be used to fill the kettle. So far, one month further on the kettle is sparkling. Tea and coffee taste better, as does a glass of water straight from the fridge. Installing the new filters is easy. The indicator on top tells you when they need replacing. The slim shape of the jug fits easily in the door compartment of my fridge. You will not regret buying the Brita water filter jug. I didn't.

This is my second water filter jug and I would recommend this one as its cheap and cheerful and fits into the door of my fridge. My only bugbear is that sometimes water leaks out of the handle when the jug is filled to capacity, but otherwise, its a good product and I always have fresh pure water minus impurities and limescale.

I read the hype but, as this is such a good price, decided to find out for myself. I was not disappointed. The difference in clarity and taste is as they say. Tea made "in the cup" doesn't stain like unfiltered water so washing up is easier. It's quicker to filter than I had supposed, too, taking just a couple of minutes for the "funnel" to empty into the jug proper. All in all, taken with the 4-pack of filters, this is well worth the money.

I bought this Product and received it on Xmas Eve. Unfortunately the little round bit where the water gets filled in was broke, so that we cant use it untill now. I tried to contact Britta UK and still got no answer. But the Product does its job. There is a big difference in the taste of the water (which was horrible chloreful before).

I wish it would be even bigger! :-)

I bought this larger jug so I could replace my smaller Brita jug and reduce having to add water all the time. The jug did resolve this for me, but I found a few more problems with it. My family particular my younger brothers on refilling it would add too much water causing it to leak everywhere, I think they just assumed it was bigger the thing would filter quicker. Also a secondary problem was when filled to the maximum the jug is quite heavy, some of my elder relatives found it difficult to pick up and pour.
None the less it does the job it is intended for and filters water really well in my hardwater prone area, however maybe I should of stuck with the original. Its worth looking around for the filters on Amazon as they really are cheap sometimes.

I am using it in Bulgaria and is quite good. The water does is crystal clear and have no smell after filtering. Recommended if you do not mind drinking tap water.

this has been a great item for our busy house, i have now put the kettle away as it hasnt been used for 3 months. our first one was faulty (just a sticky lid, wasnt electrical) but amazon replaced it immediately. we havent had any problems with the replacement. its quick and so easy to use, we need the variable water control as i love big mugs and my husband often drinks smaller cups. its also ideal if you have babies (we have twins) as you can have water to warm bottles up in seconds.
initially i thought this was really aimed at single people not big families but we have four children and alot of visitors and builders in and out of the house and i havent had to resort to the kettle once since we bought the hot cup.

This is a good looking piece of kit, boils quickly for mugs/cups of hot water.
However, as a busy mother/homemaker I quickly realized for the many other uses for a kettle you should bear in mind that the maximum amount possible is about a large mug, so needing to boil water for stock for soups or casseroles and other situations around the house, then this is not ideal. Having said that, we boil water mostly for hot drinks in this house so I am still very pleased with it, for the environmental impact and for the short time it takes to make a drink.
Its not any noisier than a kettle.

I bought one from amazon a couple of months ago.it was great.my 28 year old son loves it so do i.unfortunely the lid would not stay down.so i contacted amazon by email.they came and collected the faulty one and replaced it at the same time with a new one.the service was brilliant.i use it for every thing not just hot drinks.i bought the variable one so i could use larger amount of water for gravys and instant custard.mine is in use every day all day.thats why i had a replacement and not my money back,we cant live without it now.dont hesitate to buy it,just do it.weldone the ammazon team.

Having only used one of the six filters provided, the jug is now in pieces. It is very bulky for a fridge door model and needs more than the space required for a 6 pint milk bottle. The filter is very heavy and the jug very light. As a result it fell out of my fridge door twice.
Firstly, when fairly empty, it hit the floor came to pieces and broke off the spout cover. We realised it's weight distribution was making it unstable and therefore refilled before it was empty but it fell out again after a couple of weeks later and smashed in 2 on the floor with water everywhere.
Contacted the company and the next morning a replacement jug arrived! Really impressed with the service and making sure it is now always kept in the one deep pocket in our fridge door.
Basically, really good tasting, cheap water but if you don't have a really deep pocket in your fridge door don't risk it.

The jug is easily assembled and fits perfectly into a fridge door. Although it does take a little while to fill to full capacity due to the water having to filter from the top chamber, through the filter and then into the bottom of the jug. It's great value because of the 12 month pack of filters, as it's used just for myself, these filters will last me 2 years!

Very easy to set up and use. And it fits in our fridge door - just. But it might not fit in some fridge doors at all. So you should check yours if this is important. The filters are simple to fit, can be bought most cheaply in multi-packs and appear to be widely available, either retail or online. Highly recommended. I really like this kettle.
the design is excellent: it prevents the unfiltered water from being poured into a cup and the blue light is also good.
The only downside is that it stays a bit too long at the boiling temprature, befoer it cuts the power. (maybe this is just for me...)
Anyway, i recommend this one.

My old Brita a) didn't fit in the fridge door and b) the sensor on the lid had stopped working so I decided to replace it. This replacement is very good, at 9.99 was a bargain for a Brita, and does what it is supposed to do. Only one tiny criticism the water flap on the spout doesn't always open fully and you have to give it a nudge. Otherwise it would have received the full 5 stars.

Using these inline filters systems are cheaper in the long run, easy to fit unscrew and just screw the new replacement and more important it's on tap, don't have to worry about filling the jug up with water then having to wait for it then to filter through. Brita recommend changing the filter every 3 / 4 months they last a year.

Having searched the internet for stockists of the Brita Water Filter tap cartridge I then visited them all here on the Isle of Wight. There were about ten of them. None of them stocked the filter tap replacement cartridge. Only when I visited "Amazon" did I find a stockist for the cartridge. Not great in hard water areas
Yes, these are cheaper than the big name brands but there is a difference in quality. I noticed straight away that the water goes through the filter very quickly compared with other types, which makes me think they don't actually have much inside. As a result, we get much more limescale build-up in the kettle than with say Brita or Boots filters, which seem better packed with filling, and take a while to filter the water.

If you live in a hard water area, I'd think twice about these, but they're probably OK elsewhere if you just want to improve the taste of tap water. It's probably fair to say you get what you pay for.

This is better, affordable to all and works fine!
I have only come accross LAICA filters this year. It works better than the Kenwood that I used for years. It is also cheaper. The quality of the water is fine and very little after-taste.
I have only been using this product for a few months now. And it is a good value for money product that I can well endorse.

Tried these as Britta are so expensive. Six in the pack, no problem there. They fit fine and the water tastes great, just like it did with Britta. No build up of lime scale in the kettle either. Recommended.

I love my Quick Cup
I am only writing this review because of the slightly misleading nature of the other review.

The instruction manual suggests a new filter every 6 - 10 weeks depending on the water in your area and how much use the device gets. But the machine will operate without a filter at all and just because the light suggests a new filter after 2 or 3 weeks you don't have to get one.

I love Tefal Quick Cup
I am writing this review because I love the Tefal Quick Cup and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Both my husband and I use it on a regular basis and after 5 weeks we're still using the original cartridge which I think is excellent. As for energy saving then it remains to be seen if our electric bills go down, but at the same time as buying this kettle we did change all our light bulbs to energy saving ones, but in this climate I guess every little helps.

The only downside of the Tefal Quick Cup is how noisy it is, but since its only for a few seconds per cup its easy to put up with.

I have read mixed reviews but I read with an open mind and prefer to make my own mind up and in this instance I'm glad that I did.

Great product
We have had this for about a month now. Great jug - water filters through fast, the jug fits in the fridge perfectly, nice pourer, sturdy and perfectly sized - any larger capacity and it would be too heavy for me when full. The water tastes great - I remember the old original Brita filter we had making the water taste horrid with a tinge of carbon, but the new filters make a HUGE difference, the water now tastes lovely.

very good
This jug is just as good as expected. it completely takes out the chlorine smell of tap water and it does it quite quickly. It's very easy to use and after the first couple of steps (soaking the filter and a coule of filtering cycles you have to do) it's hassle free.
The timer on the lid reminds you of when the month is over so you can change the filter. The plastic is of good quality and feels very durable.
Overall a very good product.

So quick and efficient!
Easy to fill, quick to filter the water through, and we can really taste the difference between hard London tap water and Brita filtered water. This is a good size as well, so we have to refill it less frequently. This is handy, as we use the filtered water for the kettle, iron and to water the pot plants! This is of course in addition to drinking water!

The only slight niggle is the flap down propection cap on the spout as it tends to deflect the water to the side a bit which can be a problem if you are attempting to transfer the water to a bottle with a small neck.

• When the weather is hot, drink room temperature or warm water for keeping your water equilibrium in balance; warm water is absorbed much faster than iced water.

great water filter, looks good, works without fault, great!
This is a great filter, the first we have used, and we won't be going back to tap water now. The difference to the inside of the kettle is amazing (yes, we do use it for boiling as well), and my husband thinks vegetables taste better too. We live in London where the water is very hard with lots of limescale and a slight taste so for us this makes a fantastic difference for a fraction of the cost of bottled water.

Cartridge installation

GENERAL OPINION
Very happy with my choice. We used to have only bottled mineral (still and sparkling) water and that was not healthy, not practical and kind of expensive.
Don't expect filtered water to taste like still mineral water though! It has a neutral taste, maybe a little sweeter than what I was used to, but I could easily get used to it. We now use it for drinking, cooking, tea & cofee, filling up the air humidifier and the iron.

BRITA METER
After 4 weeks, the meter displays 25% left. We are 2 adults and a breast fed baby.

ADVICE
Try to order the XL version as constantly filling it up, especially for cooking can be quite tedious.

CONS
none that I can think of.

I was most impressed with the style and efficiency of this item. The size is just right for my needs, and I now have a constant supply of filtered water on hand for tea/coffee drinks. It's too large for storage in my fridge for really cold drinks, (hopefully needed in quantity for this coming summer) but not such an issue in February. All in all, an excellent purchase.

These cartridge filters are not easily obtainable from all retail outlets and the idea of purchasing a whole 12 months' supply in one single package from Amazon co.uk has proved to be a most attractive buy. The MAXTRA cartridges themselves are by far the best type for purification of drinking water straight from the tap, but beware of the lack of recycling facilities for disposal of those which need to be discarded after use.

Effective and unexpectedly economical
I use mine in a hybrid jug-kettle, so they are catering for all my water-needs. I have been using them for two or three years and am past the honeymoon phase. They work.

Tea is cleaner looking and tasting. My Espresso machine has cut its descaling needs, and the insides of my jug-kettle are nearly as new.

After experimenting with differences between advertised and actual effective lifespan of cartridges, I conclude I can use them for twice as long before they show first signs of lessened effectiveness.

The environment of use is relevant here, so I will share it: 1/4 litre cold per day to fill espresso reservoir, 1/2 litre per day boiled at various times to make mugs of tea, and 2-litres per week brought to boiling and poured on pasta to be cooked.

My recent purchase of water filters- I am concerned that the duration of these filters are limited.

Compared to the older type of filter,for my old jug, the position of 25% has been reached very quickly.

The price per pack should be more competative.
Does the job
Clean water, and the filters are much less fiddly than ones I've used in the past. Just a shame it takes so long to filter the water through.

Good water, relatively easy to fit
I'm on my third filter now. I was skeptical of the efficacy when we bought the tap (Brita Titanium) but noticed an immediate change -- no skin EVER forms on the tea, no matter how long it sits in the teapot. Given that we have restricted space under the sink, I was also worried about whether it would be easy to change cartridges. It is if one reads the directions. Does the water taste better? It's hard to say. We have naturally soft spring water, so the unfiltered water tastes fine. For me the benefit has been the lack of skin forming on tea, and the fact that coffee doesn't leave stains in the cup.

Expensive but last longer than the timer suggests
There is no doubt that these filters along with the tap are more convenient and effective than the jug systems, albeit a lot more expensive. In theory, part of the mechanism of the tap measures how much water goes through it to determine when the filter needs replacing. Oddly, for each of the first two cartirdges the "time to replace" light came on after almost exactly 3 months, and we're a two person household so don't use a lot of filtered water. Brita sell "a year's supply of cartridges" as a pack of four - i.e assume you replace evey 3 months. So I very much doubt that the tap mechanism is more than a simple timer. For the second filter, I reset the timer so that it has now been in use for 5 months and the water is still fine.
In the meantime, the price of filter is increasing!

Having been a user of the Brita Classic jug water filter system for many years there is no doubt that the Brita tap filter cartridge is much better. We live in a hard water area and there is very little scale in the kettle after 3 months. Using the jug system we had scale after 3 weeks. If no filter is used we get bad scale in the kettle after one or two weeks. As the other reviewer states there is no skin on tea or coffee when using the filter. We frequently get a chlorine taste in the water and so far this filter has removed most evidence of this. You only have to smell the cold water out of the normal cold tap to know that the filtered water has been cleaned up. Cooking vegetables in chlorine free water is much more pleasant. The only downside of the filter is during the first few days the water can have a very bright taste or a little like the expensive French mineral water. The old Classic jug filters also had this trait to a smaller extent. I have never used the Brita Maxtra filter so cannot comment on them.
When summed up I feel that the Brita tap filter system can be very good if you need a filter for water taste. scale and a degree of chemical protection. As the area we live is agricultural and during the last world war a lot of chemicals contaminated the ground water then a little extra pesticide / chemical protection for the drinking water makes me feel a little safer.
It can be much cheaper to buy the filters in packs of 4.

Water filter convert
Bought this item through Amazon and delighted with the service I received.

Having never owned a water filter jug before, it was suggested to me that living in a 'hard water' area, these jugs are a must. I'm so pleased to have been talked into it because the Marella jug, quite apart from filtering water, is also easy to use and easy on the eye.

For the money, I doubt you'll find better..... our kettle seldom needs descaling (used to be twice a week), and the family detect an improved taste to the water!
