It’s good to see more events added to the tour in different locations, which will let us show our skills in a variety of waves. I think all that is missing is a good reef break, but understandable with the tide differences!

Seems like the tour is progressing every year, more ideas, different locations which is cool. The whole event is starting to look like a mini IBA world tour in the way its getting run these days which is real good to keep everyone keen and getting the younger generation involved. I’m probably gonna win this year I reckon.

The Auto Sleepers 2012 British Championship Tour will now encompass the following:

Event 1:  The Welsh Showdown - May 19/20, back-up 26/27

Event 2:  Bodyboard Depot Tolcarne Wedge Airshow – July 7/8 back-up July 21/22

Event 3:  The Pit MP Encounter – Aug 25/26/27 – Mawgan Porth

Event 4:  Bodyboard HQ Porthtowan Classic including the British Nationals – Sept 22/23 back-up 29/30 – Porthtowan

Event 5:  Causeway Coast Surf Festival – Oct 6/7 back-up 20-21 – Portrush, Ireland

Event 6:  The Harbour Wall frenzy – Oct 13/14 back-up 27/28 – Portreath

The Tour winners will receive a sponsorship package from the BBC, the Open division £500, DK and Women’s £250.  The sponsorship will come in the form of support to compete at an IBA/ISA/ESF international event.

Notes for competitors:

1. All events will have Open, DK & Women’s divisions.  The Porthtowan event will also host the British Nationals age divisions.
2. All events will score a maximum of 500 ranking points; see the BBC website for full points score details.
3. Competitors can drop a maximum of their 2 lowest scoring results, so in the event that all 6 events run your top 4 scores will count; if only 4 or 5 events run then the top 3 scores will count.
4. An all-surf-twice format will be run where time, conditions and entry numbers allow.  Failing which the conventional knock-out format will apply.
5. Top 8 finishers in the Open division automatically qualify for next years tour.
6. The schedule is subject to amendment depending on conditions and beach permission.
7. Eligibility criteria for competing on the Tour can be found on the BBC website.

The BBC is pleased to confirm some advanced details for the 2012 season.

Firstly, underpinning the viability of the Tour is the important news that The Auto-Sleepers Group is once again committing its financial support to the BBC. The Worcestershire based motor home manufacturer is now in its 5th year of support for the British bodyboard community.

Speaking just after the deal was secured; Rich Hall said “it’s hard not to repeat ourselves with regards to how grateful we are to Geoff and the team at ASG for their continued support. A deal that’s lasted this long is a testament to both the hard work of the BBC committee and the genuine concern for grass-roots sport that a national company like ASG has”. He continued, “ASG not only backed the 2011 tour, but they also helped send the British team to the Canaries for the World Bodyboard Games in December; it’s fabulous to have a main sponsor who puts their money where their mouth is”.

Finishing touches are also being put together to finalise the 2012 British bodyboard tour. Whilst the Tour itself is being sponsored by the Auto-Sleepers Group, each event on the tour will have its own headline sponsor.

The Tour will retain the 3-top-scores format from 2011, with each rider being able to drop either their bottom 1 or 2 scores depending on whether there are ultimately 4 or 5 qualifying events. The Tour will decide the British Champions in the Open, Women’s and Drop-Knee divisions, with the age categories again being decided at the Nationals.

The provisional date events (with fall-backs in brackets) so far are:

Rest Bay, Wales – May 19/20th (26/27th)

Tolcarne Wedge – July 7/8th (21/22nd)

Portrush – early September (subject to final confirmation)

Porthtowan – September 22/23rd (29/30th)

With a number of other potential events bubbling under, a final itinerary will be published as soon as details crystallise.

The BBC will also be trialling an ‘all-surf-twice’ format this year where conditions and entry numbers allow. Additional grom-specific events, including coaching, competition training and actual competitions are also planned for this season; alongside a no-pro event to cater for underground and first time competitors.

So with plenty of innovations in the pipeline for 2012, the BBC AGM will be held on March 14th, at 19.30 at the Newquay Activity Centre. All members are invited to attend.
