We're Opening Again From Monday!

We are very pleased to announce that we will be re-opening our premises from Monday 12th April. We look forward to welcoming everyone back and to seeing all of you again.

From Monday, we will be operating our regular opening hours:

Monday to Thursday: 8.00am – 5.00pm

Friday: 8.00am – 4.00pm

Saturday: 8.00am – 12 noon

We have been working hard during the recent lockdown to make our premises as safe as possible for everyone.

Native Timber Shop

Our Timber Shop has had an upgrade to include a beautiful new native elm sales counter. We have increased the space around our display boards, so that safe distances can be maintained.

Entry is as normal, through the Timber Shop glass door. We have provided hand sanitiser for you as you enter the shop. We are well stocked with plenty of lovely native boards, ready and waiting for you to browse through.

Rough Sawn Timber

If you require rough sawn timber from the racks, please come into the Timber Shop rather than the Flooring Showroom. A member of our team will lift down the timber of your choice and leave you to browse through the pack at your convenience.

Flooring Showroom

Please come in through the main glass door to the left as you face the building. We have provided hand sanitiser for you as you come in. Our Flooring Showroom is straight to your left. Please come in and press the buzzer on the counter (also to your left). A member of our team will come to assist you.

Trade Counter Sales

For ancillary products (cleaning products/finishes/fixings, etc.), please come into our Flooring Showroom, through the main glass door to the left as you face the building. We have provided hand sanitiser for you as you come in. Come into the Flooring Showroom straight to your left and press the buzzer on the counter (also to your left). A member of our team will come to assist you.

You may prefer to continue use our Click and Collect service to minimise potential wait times. All of our ancillary products can now be ordered ahead of time from our online shop. Please contact us if you can’t find the particular product you are looking for, or if you would like advice about the best products to use for your project.

Order Collection

Please call the Sales Office on 01535 637755 when you arrive to collect your order. A member of our team will bring your order out to you.

We look forward to seeing you all again from Monday. If you have any queries at all prior to your visit, please contact us – we’d be very happy to help.

Burr & Brrrr! - Log Blog #2

On the 8th of February we started cross cutting our frozen Burr and Brown Oak logs to reveal their inner beauty.

Some burr and pip just sits on the surface like a cow pat, these however went right into the heart of the log.

A Big Lump on the Forklift Truck

Here are some photos of the Pippy Brown Oak. The brown is caused by the Beefsteak Fungus, one of the many edible fungi that grow on wood. The fungus causes a myriad of distinctive tiger striping throughout the wood.

The Burr Oak was cut at 56mm thick and made into Boules which will be air dried indoors initially for a year before kilning.

The Boules are stored at high level with the benefit of good air flow from our wood fired factory heating.

Log Blog #1 - February 2021

The 1st of February was a lovely crisp day up here in Yorkshire, perfect for unloading/reloading our 40ft kiln. This load was 300 cubic feet of really gorgeous Pippy Oak cut at 30mm thick, which had been in for eight weeks, after first air drying. Most of the boards came out straight and flat with almost zero degrade.

We always have to put a few pieces through the planer to reveal their inner beauty.

The next load went in the same day and consisted of Elm, Sycamore and Beech, cut to 56mm thick. The Elm tends to move a lot so we made a Beech and Elm sandwich to keep it flat.

The Beech logs were enormous, displaying some striking spalting and had to be reduced in size with the chain mill before going to the main saw.

The drying of these starts low and slow at 35°C, gradually building up to 47°C at the end of the cycle. I'm really looking forward to planing up some of these Bobby Dazzlers when they come out!
The post Log Blog #1 - February 2021 appeared first on British Hardwoods Blog.

Showcasing Anthony Griffiths - Wood Carver

This time last year, we were busy preparing for our Annual Timber Shop Open Day in the February. What a brilliant day it turned out to be, and how lucky we were that we managed to squeeze it in, just before everything changed. The success of our Open Days is always, in large part, down to the talented exhibitors and timber enthusiasts, who join us on the day and display their wonderful creations and skills. One such person is the very talented Anthony Griffiths, who has kindly forwarded some photos of his unique and beautiful wood carvings.

The Alchemist

Bowler Hat Man

Stained Glass Artist

Throwing Pots

The Artist and Muse

Anthony modestly suggested the pieces could be entitled: 'What you can make out of a load of offcuts' (plus a few blocks of lime and other bits). The fine detail in Anthony's work is truly mesmerising, we hope you enjoy these photos as much as we do.

Stunning Loft Conversion using British Hardwoods Timber

A loyal customer of ours has recently used our planed all round oak timber to stunning effect in his unique loft design project. The project has now been shortlisted for a prestigious design award, and our oak battens feature in every one of the photos he submitted!

Woodside Loft is a residential loft conversion to what was originally a 1930s three-bedroom semi-detached house. The pairing of the oak timber flooring with the planed oak vertical battens has created an organic/modern-retro feature. We love his design ideas.

Our customer is up against some really big design agencies, so we’d really like to help him win. (David vs Goliath!).

The public vote closes in just over a week, so please take a look at what he’s created and, if you like it, then please do vote for him.

Here’s the link: https://www.internationaldesignexcellenceawards.com/finalist/woodside-loft/

Good luck Rob!

Yorkshire Three Peaks Fundraising Challenge

A huge well done to members of the British Hardwoods Production Team who successfully conquered the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge at the weekend. The gruelling walk includes the local peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough (plus all the bits in between). They completed the walk in just 11 hours - raising funds for the mental health charity "Mind".

The intrepid team - James, Ben, Steve, Jamie, John and Nick

Before the walk, Ben said:

". . . We are a group of normal men working manual jobs living normal lives. We spend all day every day together (well Monday-Friday) and are lucky enough to have the ability to chat and check in with each other, not everyone has that. We all know someone who has suffered in silence with mental health or have experienced this ourselves. We chose Mind because we want to increase awareness and spread the word that it is ok to not be ok. With this in mind we want to push ourselves to complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks in under 12 hours . . ."

Well, they certainly achieved that. Some 50,000 steps later and the boys were home and dry, nursing aching limbs and blistered feet, all in aid of a very worthy cause. We are all very proud of their team effort and extremely impressed that they all made it into work today, footsore but ready to go.

If you would like to support their fundraising efforts for this very important charity, their JustGiving fundraising page can be found here >>
The post Yorkshire Three Peaks Fundraising Challenge appeared first on British Hardwoods Blog.

We are still up and running - taking orders online and over the phone. To ensure the safety of our staff and customers, our premises are NOT open to the public at this time. We're working hard to adapt to current restrictions, and to provide our full product range. For our sawn kiln-dried timber customers, we have just launched a Sawn Timber Product Page. All our popular rough sawn timbers are now available to buy online by the cubic foot.

Rough Sawn, Kiln-Dried Waney Edged Oak Boards (available online by the cubic foot)

Sawn Beech Timber Boards (available online by the cubic foot)

Our Canadian and American Sawn Timbers are also available online in a choice of 1" (25.4mm) and 2" (50.8mm) thicknesses. The boards are supplied in random widths, typically between 90mm and 150mm and in lengths around 3 metres. (Please note: the widths and lengths supplied may vary depending on stock availability.)

Calibrated French Oak (available online by the cubic foot)

Our popular Calibrated Oak Timber is also available in a choice of Rustic (QF4), Character (QF3) and Classic (QF2) grades. The boards are supplied in a 23mm thickness, in random widths (typically between 190mm-210mm). Calibrating is not the same as planing. The boards have had a very fast pre-plane to bring the timber to a regular size.

All our sawn and calibrated timbers are carefully stored in our heated and acclimatised factory, giving an average moisture content of between 9-11% . The boards are sold by the cubic foot in random stock widths and random stock lengths. If you require timber in specific widths or with a planed finish, we would recommend our planed all round timber.

For information about stock availability, or to discuss your own particular timber project, please contact us.
