The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo runs from 07 – 29 August 2026.

It’s no surprise that incredibly popular The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo sells out many months in advance. British TIPS team member, Nel, says it’s one of the best events she’s ever attended:

“It’s magical, especially with the castle walls being illuminated like a backdrop. So atmospheric! The choreography and precision of everything is next level – if you’re someone that likes watching the opening of the Olympics and things like that, you’ll enjoy this! I like the combination of Scottish tradition, like bagpipes and drummers, with international performances. And the grand finale with the fireworks over the castle… Wow. I’ll never forget it. I love booking Tattoo tickets for our clients, because I just know they will absolutely LOVE it!”

Here are Nel’s top tips:

Book in advance (tickets and accommodation)

I can’t stress this enough, especially if you’re a group wanting to sit together! Tickets for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo usually go on sale in AUGUST for the following year and sell out months in advance. As an authorised reseller, we emphasise that people should not delay in booking their tickets. The same goes for accommodation. We hand pick our accommodation options, based on what we know works best for our clients.

Dress accordingly

You don’t have to wear your Sunday best, but my advice is to remember 4 things:

It’s quite a “hike” up to the castle esplanade, a lot of it on cobbles, and then you might need to slog up a bunch of stairs in the stands. Wear comfy shoes.

You’re sitting still in a small space for a long time, so dress comfortably.

I found it really chilly up in the stands so, even if it’s been a sunny day, pack warm layers and a hat.

The event goes ahead rain or shine. Bring a hooded raincoat or waterproof poncho (umbrellas aren’t allowed). It drizzled that day so we took plastic ponchos to put on the seats before we sat down. I did see some ponchos for sale there but they were super expensive and there’s a queue – better to bring one from home.

You may want to bring something to sit on too, like a little cushion – those plastic-covered seats can be chilly!

Pack snacks

If you won’t have time for dinner before you go or you have children with you, bring snacks. You can’t take hot food, alcohol, cans, bottles over 750ml, or anything in glass, but unopened smaller plastic bottles under 750ml and things like an energy bar are allowed. There’s a small selection of snack options to purchase there, but they can be pricey for South Africans, plus it’s a mission to get out of the stands. Otherwise, have a lovely dinner at one of the awesome restaurants in Edinburgh beforehand, like we did! (There are also some amazing packages offered that combine special dinner experiences with seating.)

Keep your bag small

You can only bring in a small bag/rucksack (under A3 size) so don’t pack too much! I saw people queuing with huge bags and it caused a real problem at security. If you’re taking lots of stuff with you (the snacks and the cushion and the layers…) stash them in a foldable bag so, if there are issues, you can just put on the clothes and fold away the bag.

Bring earplugs

If you have sensitive hearing or are bringing children, bring earplugs/noise-reducing headphones. It’s really loud with all the drummers, pipers, music and fireworks!

Time your arrival

The show is at one of the most magnificent places in the UK. Arrive a bit early for a slow stroll up to the castle, soak up the atmosphere, take some selfies, and enjoy the view over the city. Alternatively, if you just want to get to your seat as fast as possible, the queue moves faster once doors have opened so, wait before heading over. Doors usually open about 45 minutes before the show starts and I suggest allowing at least 15 minutes to get to your seat, especially if you’re way up at the top.

…and your departure

Thousands of people attend each show and it is slow progress leaving after the performance. Avoid scheduling anything for shortly after the event so you don’t have to rush anywhere. If you’re relying on public transport, like trams, check the timetables beforehand. Taxis get snapped up and, even if you’ve booked a transfer, the roads get pretty clogged up so it will take time. We stayed nearby so we could just amble back to our hotel!

Visit the castle (another time)

Edinburgh Castle is a Must Visit but you won’t be able to go in and explore on the evening. You’ll need to go early in the day or on another day. We visited the morning before, which was great because we got to see everything without a big rush and we then had an idea of the layout. Just remember the entry to the castle isn’t included in your Tattoo ticket so you need to buy this separately. We book Edinburgh Castle tickets separately or in combo with sightseeing buses, or can include it in your package.

I really loved The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and I know you will too – so give us a shout to book!

Email sales@britishtips.com or WhatsApp 0027 76 399 4640 or call 0027 21 975 2047 to book your tickets, hospitality, accommodation and more.

Comfortable: Amtrak trains have reclining seats with plenty of legroom – and no dreaded middle seats. Private sleeper cabins are available on long-distance trains.

Amenities: Most routes offer free WiFi, so you can post your travel pics. There are also dining/café services. You can also bring snacks and drinks on board.

Eco-friendly: Amtrak trains are more energy efficient, produce less greenhouse emissions, and are a much more sustainable way to travel than driving or flying. They’re also working at making all their operations even more eco-friendly.

Slow tourism: For those who like to take their time and truly immerse themselves in the journey, many Amtrak routes offer the perfect transport option. Do an entire route in one go or build your itinerary around it – the choice is yours.

We highly recommend experiencing the Emerald Isle by train! Ireland’s major cities are well-connected from Dublin, making train travel an easy and enjoyable (and affordable) way to explore.

Here’s why we love to travel by train in Ireland:

Fast & convenient: Most intercity train journeys take less than 3 hours, meaning you can visit some of Ireland’s gorgeous cities in a short time.

Beautiful scenery: Ireland’s soaring landscapes are world-renowned for their beauty. Train travel lets you relax and take in the views without distractions.

Less stressful: Skip the stress of navigating Ireland’s winding roads, driving on the left, or dealing with rental cars. No traffic jams or parking issues – just hop aboard and off you go!

Eco-friendly: Train travel is a much more sustainable way to explore Ireland than by car or flight.

Budget friendly: Ireland offers some of the best-value train fares around, so it’s a really budget-friendly option.

Well-connected with buses: Although rural towns and villages generally don’t have train stations (which actually adds to their charm), Ireland’s bus network is excellent, allowing easy connections from city train stations to countryside destinations.

Superb cities to visit by rail in under 2.5 hours from Dublin

Kilkenny (1.5 hours)

Known as Ireland’s “Medieval Capital” and the “Marble City”, Kilkenny is home to majestic 12th century Kilkenny Castle, charming cobbled streets, and a thriving art and food scene. This city is in what’s known as Ireland’s Ancient East. We recommend a visit to the Smithwick’s Experience for a taste of traditional Irish ale and discover Irish whiskey at Ballykeefe Distillery. History buffs will enjoy discovering the past on the Medieval Mile trail running through the city.

Cork (2.5 hours)

On the National Geographic Best of the World 2025 list, this maritime town perched on an island in the River Lee is sure to win you over with its rows of pretty macaron-coloured buildings overlooked by the St Anne’s Church tower. If you love to eat, check out the Cork Fab Food Trail, famous English Market, Franciscan Well Brewery, and the Cork Butter Museum (yes, a museum dedicated entirely to butter). Visit the Cork City Gaol, Nano Nagel Place, 7th-Century St Fin Barr’s Cathedral, and the Victorian Quarter, and maybe even try your hand at bell ringing at Shandon Bells & Tower.

Galway (2.5 hours)

This bustling coastal town on the Wild Atlantic Way boasts a thriving music and food scene, narrow streets with quirky shops, traditional pubs galore, and in summer, it boasts festivals aplenty (it’s known as Ireland’s festival capital). Explore Shop Street, visit the Latin Quarter, and enjoy a seaside stroll in the fresh Irish air on Salthill Promenade. Don’t forget to stop in at the Galway City Museum and St Nicholas’ Church (TIP: on Saturdays there is an excellent market in front of the church). We recommend a walking tour to appreciate this attractive town and perhaps a cruise on the bay.

Waterford (1 hour 20 minutes)

Ireland’s oldest city is known for its fascinating Viking heritage and Waterford Crystal. Exploring the “Viking Triangle” (the main cultural and heritage area of Waterford) is a must. Visit the Medieval Museum and take in some of the breathtaking views along the Copper Coast. It’s also been voted Ireland’s Number 1 Foodie Destination (2019) so don’t miss out on the local produce and sea food. Be sure to try the local speciality, blaa bread with Irish butter!

Limerick (2.5 hours)

A city rich in history and culture, the town of Limerick boasts highlights like 13th century King John’s Castle (where children can try on Medieval-style costumes), the scenic River Shannon, and a fantastic food scene at The Milk Market (weekends). The 40km Limerick Greenway is an ideal walking route for those wanting to experience some of Ireland’s great outdoors.

Fancy dinner with a difference? We recommend Bunratty Castle’s Medieval Banquet, around 20 minutes’ drive away (you’ll need a bus or taxi to get there), a particular favourite with children.

Belfast (2 hours 15 mins)

One of our favourite cities, Belfast is a Must Visit. Although technically Northern Ireland and thus considered part of the UK (more about that here), we think this city at the top of the island of Ireland will captivate you. The history is fascinating, the architecture lovely, the locals are friendly, and there is oodles of stuff to see and do. We recommend at least 1 full day and a visit to the Titanic Experience as well as a Black Cab Tour to see the murals. (Remember, South Africans need a UK visa to visit Belfast.)

Stress-free rail & coach tours in Ireland

Want a seamless trip? We recommend an organised rail-and-coach tour where everything is arranged for you – from train tickets and accommodation to sightseeing tours. We are an official supplier for Railtours Ireland First Class, which offers outstanding rail and coach tour packages with service at first-class level (at an affordable price!). These itineraries combine some of Ireland’s scenic train journeys with guided coach tours, giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace.

The ancient port town of Marseille (pronounced ‘mar-SAY’, as in ‘today’ and ‘hooray’) has a reputation for being a little bit rough around the edges. But does this mean you should avoid visiting? Absolutely not! In fact, as France’s oldest city, visiting this diverse, vibrant place with its magnificent basilica and glorious view of the Mediterranean Sea, will leave you with memories place layered with intrigue, beauty, and an unforgettable je ne sais pas.

British TIPS team member, Jenni, has visited Marseille twice and explains why including it in your visit to France is a win.

“I enjoy Marseille! In all honesty, Marseille is not always ‘pretty’ (although it is beautiful in many ways), nor is it ‘neat and tidy’. It has a certain grittiness in addition to the beauty it most definitely does have – but that’s actually part of its charm. The layers of old and new, European and African, classical design and modern street art, narrow lanes and open harbour front make for a surprisingly winning combination. It won me over!

“Marseille’s street art scene took me by surprise as there’s so much of it and it’s fascinating, with some well-known artists to be found, like Nhobi and Seek 313, and the little Space Invaders mosaics which are popping up all over France.

“And the food is amazing. Seafood fans like me are spoilt for choice in this port city, and the classic bouillabaisse fish stew (one of my favourite dishes) was invented here. (If you want to see the freshly caught fish and seafood being sold, get up early and check out the little Vieux-Port fish market.) Olive tapenade, orange-blossom flavoured navettes cookies (I could eat them every day), and panisse chickpea pancakes are just some of the treats you’ll find here – yummy!

“On my first visit, a colleague and I wandered through the buzzing Noailles neighbourhood, also called the North African Quarter. It’s buzzing with energy, the air heavy with spicy aromas, and the narrow streets are crowded with products, from fruit and veg to colourful wax-print cloth and basketwork, spilling onto the pavement. It may be cliché to call the city a melting pot, but I can think of no better phrase to describe it.

“So, what about the dire dangers you’ve heard about? I can only speak for myself but, having walked around Marseille’s Vieux Port alone, including nipping out in the evening, I didn’t find it particularly intimidating or scary – no more than other big cities I’ve visited. Would I wander around all alone in the middle of the night in Marseille or go into known dangerous neighbourhoods? No. But then I wouldn’t do that anywhere, including at home in South Africa. My feeling is: just be sensible!

“I chatted to locals about it and they explained that, yes, there are some areas of Marseille that you should best avoid, but these areas are general far outside the town centre, where tourists wouldn’t go anyway. If you stay in the touristic areas like Vieux Port and the Panier, and take the usual precautions, it’s no worse than any other big city. Plus, the city is working hard to improve overall safety too. In a nutshell: use your common sense – as you would in any other city in any other country.

“As for which part of Marseille to stay in… On my first visit, I stayed at a hotel just above the Panier, and, on my second, on the Vieux Port, so I’ve experienced both. And they’re both great. These are the most popular parts of Marseille but they’re not far apart at all – you can easily get from the Panier to the harbour within a few minutes’ walk, so which you choose will really depend on what kind of surroundings you prefer.

“The bottom line is this: Marseille has come a long way and, while it may not be as ‘chocolate-box pretty’ as many other French towns, it has an intriguingly spicy flavour all of its own. And I like it!”

Jenni’s tips for visiting Marseille

Don’t be afraid of Marseille; just be sensible.

Take a hop-on hop-off bus tour to get the history and an understanding of the “lay of the land”.

Wear walking shoes and be prepared for some steep hills.

Look out for the vibrant street art, particularly in Cours Julien and the Panier.

Taste the city with a foodie tour of Marseille’s incredibly rich food scene.

Take a guided walking or bicycle tour of Le Panier and the street art.

Marseille soap is world renowned so be sure to visit The Marseille Soap Museum and some of the many lovely little soap shops – and take home a few bars for yourself and as great souvenirs. Find out more about this famous soap here.

Marvel at the stupendous view of the city and bay from the magnificent black-and-white striped Basilica Notre Dame de la Gare.

In summer, be whisked away by a boat cruise of the bay and along the coast to see the calanques.

The Vieux Port is beautiful at night – aim to be there as the sun sets and the twinkling lights come on.

You need at least one full day to explore, preferably two if you’re taking a cruise as well and you don’t want to rush.

As with any seaside place in France, June to August (summer) are BUSY and you should book far in advance to secure good rates and ensure you have accommodation.

The Marseille tourist bureau is super helpful and the website is packed with information – use it.

Marseille is a vibrant city that offers something for everyone, and its exciting blend of old-world charm, modernity, and cultural diversity makes it a truly remarkable destination. So, what are you waiting for?

Gorgeous landscapes dotted with serene lakes and overlooked by misty mountain ranges, rolling hillsides, quaint villages, Beatrix Potter, William Wordsworth – the Lake District has it all. It’s one of the most popular destinations to visit for tourists and locals alike and, while a lot of visitors choose to drive or take a guided tour, it is also possible to explore the area using public transportation.

Bear in mind that many of the quaint little villages and rural attractions are not easily accessed by rail or bus, so we suggest basing yourself in one of the larger towns for a few days and taking one of the many excellent day tours.

Get in touch to book your trip to the Lake District and more at sales@britishtips.com or 021 975 2047.

TIP! It’s important to book well in advance as accommodation is limited in the Lake District so it sells out far in advance, as do tours and boat trips. Peak season is in summer, but it’s busy all year around.

The nearest major train station to the Lake District is Oxenholme, from which you can catch connecting trains to smaller stations, such as Windermere, Kendal, or Penrith. Public buses run by Stagecoach are another great way to get around to destinations like Keswick, Ambleside, Grasmere, and Coniston; you can buy tickets on board from the driver, or purchase one of the multi-use options. Be aware that public transportation services may be less frequent in more remote areas of the Lake District, and it’s a good idea to plan your journey in advance.

This itinerary visits Windermere, Ambleside, Keswick, Grasmere and Ravenglass.

Train from London to Windermere: Start your trip at London’s bustling Euston station for the 4.5-hour trip to Windermere. You’ll need to change trains at Oxenholme (or make your first stop here for the night before moving on to Windermere).

Drop off your bags at your hotel and head out to explore the pretty town of Windermere. You can visit the World of Beatrix Potter, take a peaceful boat trip on Lake Windermere (pictured), and pop in at some of the many excellent cafes, restaurants and shops. Treat yourself to a decadent quintessential cream tea, and, if you’re feeling more energetic, take a walk or hike on one of the many trails around the lake.

Overnight in Windermere.

Day trip by bus from Windermere to Ambleside (return): Catch a local bus from Windermere’s Bus Rail Interchange to Ambleside, which gets you there in just 15 minutes.

Ambleside is a charming town at the northern end of Lake Windermere and you can easily spend all day here, soaking up the atmosphere. Visit the 17th Century Bridge House (one of the region’s most photographed buildings), brush up on your local history at the Armitt Library & Museum Centre, and enjoy the birdsong at Stagshaw Garden. Take a short stroll to Stock Ghyll Force – a tumbling waterfall just outside town; there are also many longer walks in the area, such as the 10km walk to Rydal. A cruise from Ambleside Pier is an ideal way to appreciate the lake. There is so much to discover in Ambleside, you’ll need a full day here before hopping onto the bus back to Windermere.

Once your bags have been stashed at your hotel, you can explore the charming streets of Keswick. Pop in at the Keswick Museum and Art Gallery, the Pencil Museum (surprisingly fascinating) take a boat trip on Derwentwater, and visit the prehistoric Castlerigg Stone Circle nearby.

Bus from Keswick to Grasmere: Take the 555 Stagecoach bus to Grasmere for a day trip.

Take a day trip to Grasmere, a beautiful village known for its connections to William Wordsworth, where you can visit the poet’s former home, Dove Cottage (now a museum), explore the charming shops and cafés, walk along Grasmere Lake, and visit one of the many beautiful waterfalls in the vicinity. More energetic people could tackle the 3.3km round-trip hike up to Helm Crag for incredible views. Don’t forget to try some of the famous Sarah Nelson’s Grasmere gingerbread. Alternatively, we recommend a guided tour.

Lancaster is somewhat of a hidden gem in Northern England, and its one worth visiting.

Alternatively, connect from Ravenglass to London via Lancaster and head straight back.

Although you’ve come to the end of your trip to the Lake District, we hope you’ll be left with fantastic memories and photos – and are planning your next trip to this beautiful region.

UPDATE! EES set to go live from 12 October 2025! More information here: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees_en

All these new travel requirements, all these anagrams starting with an ‘E’! Things are getting a little confusing. Here’s our breakdown to help you understand the difference.

ETIAS, ESTA and ETA are pre-travel checks to make sure you’re allowed to enter the country; EES tracks when and where you enter and leave once you’re there.

At a glance

ETIAS

EES

ETA

ESTA

Region

Schengen area*

Schengen area*

Various, including UK & Canada

USA

Who it affects

Visa-free travelers to Schengen

All non-EU travelers to Schengen

Visa-free travelers to ETA countries

Visa-free travelers to the USA

What it’s for

Pre-screen travelers for security

Record entry/exit digitally

Pre-screen travelers for security

Determines eligibility for someone to visit the USA

When is it done

Before travel

On entering the country

Before travel

Before travel

IMPORTANT: Note that none of these is a visa. If you require a visa for travel, you will still need to apply for one before you can proceed.

*Schengen: The Schengen Area includes 26 countries that have no internal border checks between them. It covers most EU countries and a few non-EU ones, such as Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.

ETA for UK – ACTIVE FROM 08 JANUARY 2025

Stands for: Electronic Travel Authorisation

Countries covered: United Kingdom (note that other countries, like Canada, also have ETAs).

In a nutshell: ETA is a like “visa waiver” and is done BEFORE you can travel. For security reasons, it screens travellers who don’t need visas to enter the UK – much like the ETIAS (see below).

How long is it valid: An approved ETA will allow you to stay in the UK for up to 6 months. It will be valid for 2 years. You will be allowed to make multiple entries during that period.

Who does it affect: People visiting the United Kingdom without a visa, including those from the USA, Europe, Australia and Canada. If you require a visa to enter the UK, you will still need a visa but you won’t need an ETA too.

Do I need to pay something: Yes, there is a fee (info at link below).

When does it start: 08 January 2025. From 02 April 2025, EU citizens will need one.

More information: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta
(Note that other countries also have ETAs so ensure you research if your destination requires one.)

How will it work:

Apply: A few days before your journey, you apply for the ETA. It is estimated that it will take 72 hours for approval, but could take longer, so allow enough time.

Pay: You will need to pay a fee before the process can continue.

Travel: Once you have an approved ETA, you can travel.

ETIAS for Schengen

Stands for: European Travel Information and Authorisation System

Countries covered: Countries in the Schengen Area. (Note that other countries, such as Ireland, Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia may join later.)

In a nutshell: ETIAS is something you do BEFORE you travel. It is to check if you’re allowed to enter the country to which you’re travelling – like a pre-approval. It checks things like criminal record or a history of overstaying. Once you’re approved, you can visit the countries that are part of the system without having to do paperwork at the border. It is not a visa.

How long is it valid: The ESTIA covers short stays (up to 90 days in a 180-day period). Once approved, your ESTIA will be valid for up to 3 years OR your passport expires, whichever comes first.

What is the purpose: To screen people before arrival to improve security and ensure they’re allowed to enter.

Who does it affect: People from visa-exempt countries travelling to the Schengen area, such as the USA, Canada, Australia, and the UK.

Do I need to pay something: Yes, there will be a small fee for most people.

When does it start: It is not yet confirmed but is likely to be mid- to end-2025.

More information: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en

How will it work:

Apply: You will apply online before you travel.

Approval: You then need to wait for approval. If you are approved, you may visit the countries in the ETIAS system (Schengen area).

Linked: The ETIAS is linked to your passport and is valid for 3 months or until your passport expires.

EES for Schengen

Stands for: Entry and Exit System

Countries covered: Schengen areas (same as ETIAS)

In a nutshell: EES is something you do when you enter a country – like a passport stamp, but digital. It’s an automated electronic way to help countries keep track of who is coming into and leaving them, like clocking in at work. The idea is to try and reduce people who overstay their visa allowances.

How long is it valid: The EES only tracks your movements, so there’s no validity as such.

Who does it affect: All non-EU citizens, whether you have a Schengen visa or are visa-exempt. This includes people with a British passport.

Do I need to pay something: At this stage, there is no cost; it’s just an automated way to keep track of people entering a country.

When does it start: It was supposed to start in November 2024, but has been postponed. It is currently estimated to go live some time in 2025.

More information: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees_en

How will it work:

Passport: You arrive at the border of a European country and scan your passport.

Details: The EES will record passport type, number, and biometric information (fingerprints, facial scans), and the date and time you entered the country.

Tracking: The system now knows when you arrived and when you leave, so it can track how long you were there. If you stay too long, the EES will notice and alert border officers.
Note that, when it is first implemented, EES is likely to cause delays at borders, so calculate this into your travel plans.

ESTA for USA

Stands for: Electronic System for Travel Authorization

Countries covered: United States of America

In a nutshell: ESTA checks your eligibility to travel to the United States if you are a citizen of a Visa Waiver Program (VWP) country or other eligible national. It is not a visa and it does not determine or guarantee whether you can actually enter the USA – this is done by US Customs and Border Protection officers.

How long is it valid: It is for people visiting the USA for 90 days or less, and an approved ESTA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, you change your name or gender, your country of citizenship changes, or your responses to any of the questions on the ESTA application have changed.

Who does it affect: Citizens or eligible nationals of a Visa Waiver Program country visiting for 90 days or less. If you require a visa to enter the USA, you will still need a visa.

Do I need to pay something: Yes, there is a fee.

When does it start: It has been in place since 2008.

Nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike will find lots to do in Wales. From battlegrounds to peaceful woodlands and coal and slate mines, to sandy beaches to rugged mountains, and majestic castles to charming villages, Wales has plenty to offer. Many of the smaller, far-flung villages can only be visited by car, but a great deal of this beautiful country can be reached by public transport. Here is a suggested itinerary by rail and bus to get you inspired, or we can tailor tours to your Wales wish list.

There’s a lot of outdoor space to explore so pack your comfy walking shoes. And don’t forget your waterproofs! Wales gets a lot more rain than many other places in Great Britain and the weather can be unpredictable.

Look out for some of Wales’ traditional foods, such as Welsh Cakes, Laverbread (made with seaweed), Cawl (stew), Glamorgan sausages, and of course, Welsh Rarebit.

Get in touch for your accommodation, rail and sightseeing bookings – we’re looking forward to helping you get the most out of your trip. Email sales@britishtips.com, call +27 21 975
2047, or WhatsApp +27 76 399 3630.

Train or bus from London to Cardiff: Start your journey bright and early at London Paddington for the 2-hour journey to Wales’s capital. Or take the National Express bus from London Victoria Coach Station or direct from Heathrow in just 3.5 hours.

Explore Cardiff Bay, home to the Wales Millennium Centre, Mermaid Quay, and Roald Dahl Plass. The town is easy to visit on foot and we recommend a walking tour and/or hop-on hop-off bus to orient yourself. You can easily spend 2 or more days here!

Be sure to visit the imposing medieval fortress of Cardiff Castle which overlooks the city. St Fagan’s National Museum of History is also an absolute must for anyone interested in this incredible part of the world. Take a boat cruise on Cardiff Bay to get a different view of Wales’ capital, learn more about the city at the Museum of Cardiff, and if you have an extra day and are visiting in summer, take a day trip by boat out to Flat Holm Island. Rugby fans will enjoy a tour of Principality Stadium. Spend 1 – 2 nights in Cardiff, or make this your base for the next few days.

Spend the night in Cardiff, or make this your base for the next few days, depending on where you’ll be visiting.

Train or bus from Cardiff to Swansea and the Gower Peninsula: It’s only around 1 hour by train or bus from Cardiff to Swansea so you can even do this as a day trip.

You can visit Swansea from Cardiff as a day return trip or spend a night or two there so you have plenty of time to visit the beautiful Gower Peninsula. Spend the morning exploring the National Waterfront Museum, which showcases the fascinating industrial heritage of Swansea and Wales. Once you’ve learned a bit more about Wales, take a stroll around Swansea Marina and its shops, cafes, and restaurants. The Maritime Quarter is a great place for lunch or dinner. Looking for bustling nightlife? Spend the evening in the Uplands area, known for its bars and live music venues.

If you’d prefer to head out of the town and can’t overnight in Swansea, visit the Gower Peninsula on a day trip from Cardiff instead and admire the gorgeous beaches and rugged landscape.

More time in Swansea? Hop on a morning bus to Rhossili on the Gower Peninsula, the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK. Rhossili has a helpful Visitor Centre for advice and souvenirs, and you can enjoy coastal walks at Rhossili Bay, famous for its stunning cliffs and sandy beach. Alternatively, there are tours that run to this area, depending on season. If you love exploring the outdoors and long to get away from the bustle of the city, why not spend a few nights on the peninsula, soaking up the glorious natural landscape?

TIP! Use the “This is Gower” App to plan your walking routes on the peninsula, available for iOS and Android.

Train or bus from Swansea to Tenby: Board a morning train to Tenby, which gets you there in just 2 hours.

Tenby is a picturesque seaside town with pastel-coloured buildings, medieval walls, and a cute little harbour. Spend the day wandering along cobbled streets, visiting Tenby Castle, and relaxing on the town’s sandy beaches. Don’t forget to stop for an ice cream at one of Tenby’s ice cream parlours, such as the famous Fecci’s, a fixture in the town since 1919.

Feeling energetic? Take a walk on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. There are many walking options and you can find out more and plan your route at the Pembrokeshire Coast website.

Tenby has many excellent restaurants where you can enjoy dinner with harbour views, but they are popular so we recommend booking your table in advance, particularly in busy season.

Bear in mind that Tenby is one of Wales’ most popular seaside towns, so it gets crowded in summer.

RECOMMENDED: In summer (April to October), take a boat trip to Caldey Island (just 20 minutes), run by Cistercian monks and known for its tranquil atmosphere. Buy your tickets at the kiosk at Tenby Harbour, where boats set off. Note that the island is always closed on Sundays.

Tenby to Aberystwyth: Next stop: Aberystwyth! Get going early as it’s around 3.5 – 4 hours by train from
Tenby to the town of Aberystwyth (with a change at Carmarthen).

Aberystwyth is a charming university town on the west coast of Wales, and a popular summer vacation destination. It’s also the location of Netflix’s popular drama, Hinterland (Y Gwyll in Welsh) so, if you’re a fan, it may look familiar. Wander along the seafront to the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway – the longest funicular electric cliff railway in Britain – for panoramic views of Cardigan Bay (and one of the world’s largest camerae obscurae).

Back in town, explore the ruins of Aberystwyth Castle and stroll along the mile-long Victorian promenade. There’s plenty to do indoors too, with both the Aberystwyth Arts Centre and the National Library of Wales being surprisingly interesting places to visit. Aberystwyth also has plenty of shops to stock up on goodies and souvenirs!

Spend the evening in a cosy pub or one of the many excellent restaurants in the town centre.

RECOMMENDED: If you love heritage railways and are visiting in summer, take a ride on the Vale of Rheidol Railway, which dates back to 1902 and takes you from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge and back. Trains usually run July to October, and tickets sell out fast.

Aberystwyth to Porthmadog (2.5 hours, change at Dovey): Take the morning train to Porthmadog via Dovey Junction. The Cambrian Railway is considered one of the most scenic routes in Britain and this route takes you, first on the Cambrian Main Line and then along the Cambrian Coast Line.

The coastal harbour town of Porthmadog is home to the Ffestiniog Railway (the world’s oldest narrow-gauge railway), and the Welsh Highland Railway (the UK’s longest heritage railway). It also has a great Maritime Museum. Although the town itself isn’t packed with attractions, it’s well located and a great place to pause your journey, or base yourself for other trips.

RECOMMENDED: We highly recommend taking a ride on one of the heritage railways based in Porthmadog. The most popular is the 3-hour round-trip to the historic slate quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, but there are other options, depending on season and time. These don’t run all year around and they sell out fast, so be sure to plan ahead.

You can do a day trip to Portmeirion (less than 10 minutes by taxi), an absolutely gorgeous folly tourist village designed to look just like a picture-perfect Italian village. An overnight stay is even better as, after closing time, those staying at Portmeirion get to explore the village without other tourists around!

From Porthmadog, you can also do a side trip to overnight in Caernarfon. Wander the narrow streets, visit Wales’ most famous castles – Caernarfon Castle – & hop aboard the heritage Welsh Highland Railway. Get there by local bus (luggage maximum 20kg), in around 1 hour. Times can’t be pre-booked – you simply purchase a day ticket and get onto whichever bus has space, so be there early.

Heading home? Many visitors to North Wales opt to depart from Manchester or Birmingham as they’re closer than London, and have international airports too. Alternatively, spend a few hours relaxing on the train back to London (around 4-5 hours). Your departure city may inform where you go from Porthmadog.

If you’d prefer to continue, here are two popular options within Wales to consider for your next stop after Porthmadog…

Betws-y-Coed: If you plan to visit Betws-y-Coed from Porthmadog and you don’t have a car we suggest taking a bus as, by rail, it’s a 6-hour journey with 2 changes. A bus will get you there in 1.5 hours with 1 change at Gwastadnant.

Betws-y-Coed is a charming village known as the gateway to Snowdonia National Park. With the mountain scenes in the background and surrounded by dense Gwydyr Forest, the village has quite an Alpine atmosphere. Explore the village, stop for tea, do a little shopping, and visit the Conwy Valley Railway Museum & Model Shop next to the train station. Take one of the many nature walks around the village. The Gwydyr Forest has easy strolls, old miners’ paths, rover walks and bike trails. Or tackle slightly more challenging rambles, such as the 8.5km round trip along the river to Swallow Falls. (Important: there is a small entry fee.) There are also a few accessible routes for those with limited mobility, in wheelchairs, or strollers.

Llandudno: If you plan to visit Llandudno from Porthmadog and you don’t have a car, the options are rail (6 hours, change at Shrewsbury & Llandudno Junction) or bus (3 hours with 1 change at Bangor).

One of the most well-known seaside resorts in Britain, Llandudno, with its seafront promenade, Grade II Listed Victorian Pier, and many Victorian buildings is a lovely place to visit. A great way to explore is to follow the Llandudno Heritage Trail, taking in 15 important locations in this “model Victorian resort town”.

A trip on the Great Orme Tramway, which takes you up to the Great Orme Country Park and Nature Reserve, is also a fun way to see more of Llandudno.

Between March and early November, CitySightseeing runs a sightseeing bus which gives you a panoramic view of Llandudno and Conwy. Or why not visit Penderyn Distillery, home of Welsh Whisky, for a distillery tours and tasting? The Home Front Museum is a quirky collection of home-front related memorabilia, located in a mid-19th century building, previously used as a garage. Enjoy a tasty treat at Haulfre Tea Rooms, which are believed to date back to the 1860s. You really are spoilt for choice here! (Don’t forget to stock up on Welsh rock – the quintessential seaside holiday candy sold all over Llandudno.)

All too soon, it is time to bid Wales “hwyl fawr” (goodbye) and head home, but you’re sure to be longing to visit again!

Note: This itinerary can be customised based on your preferences and the time available for your visit. Additionally, it is recommended to check train schedules and make advance reservations to ensure a smooth journey.

(PS: don’t forget your BritRail Pass!)
