Journalling is one of my favourite pastimes. My journals include collages, doodles, writings, etc. Newspaper clippings, magazine clippings, internet print-outs, bus tickets, movie tickets, candy wrappers, you name it and it's probably in one of my journals.

Pretty much anything that currently is of interest to me gets dumped into my journals.

My favourite brand of notebook to use for my journals is Moleskine. I typically use the softcover, though I do enjoy the hardcover ones as well.

Anyways, I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Just a few pages from my journal. May do a few more posts' in the future.

REVIEW: The Big Lebowski (Movie)

"I'm the Dude, man."

The Big Lebowski may have come out a little over 15 years ago, but it was only yesterday that a friend encouraged me to watch it for the first time.

Previous to this, I've had a few acquaintances refer to me as "the Big Lebowski" in certain situations. Of course I had heard of the movie, but I was clueless as to why they deemed me worthy of the nickname. After seeing the movie, I realize the accuracy of their name-calling. Nonchalant, carefree, and the worst luck imaginable. Not to mention the hippie-esque wardrobe...sounds pretty close to my personality.

The Big Lebowski focuses on "Jeff Lebowski" more commonly called "the Dude". A laid back, unemployed, bowling-loving hippie. He is mistaken for a rich man under the same name of Lebowski. This leads to a string of ridiculous events that have him following the rich Lebowski's request to bring back his kidnapped wife. The Dude's two friends and bowling partner, Donny - an airhead at best, and Martin - an angry Vietnam vet - accompany him along the way.

The cast, characters, and iconic quotes are what really make this move the cult classic that it's become. Jeff Bridges stars as "the Dude", and the best person I could've possibly imagined to do so. Julianne Moor, John Goodman, and Steve Buscemi are just a few of the supporting characters alongside the Dude. Aside from the flawless cast, the quotes alone deem the movie endlessly re-watchable (in my opinion). The Dude is painfully blase about almost every situation he comes into contact with, delivering a plentiful amount of witty comebacks along the way for us to quote back.

In short, this film is a must see for comedy fans. The funniest movie I've seen this year, by far, and definitely in the top 10 for my all time funniest.

OVERALL: 5 stars all the way. Take away the perfect characters/cast/quotes and the plot would be bland, but the Coen brothers blended it flawlessly. Will definitely be re-watching frequently.

REVIEW: Paper Moon

Paper Moon was a recommendation from a friend. I was able to watch it the last night that it was available on Netflix a few weeks ago.

Summary: 9-year-old Addie has just lost her mother when she meets Moze, a con artist and one of the many men her mother had had a relationship with. A woman at the funeral points out that the pair have "the same jaw" and are possibly related. In the end, Moze is roped into taking Addie to her new home with her aunt and uncle. Along the way, the pair become collaborative con artists', using their "similar jaws" (a recurring theme) to their advantage claiming to be a down-and-out Father/Daughter pair.

Review:
I went in watching this movie not really knowing what to expect. It's a comedy that was made in the 1970's, filmed in black and white, and set in the 1950's during the Great Depression. Then I remembered that Grease was also a 1950's style movie filmed in the 70's, which somehow convinced me to give it a shot. What could it hurt to try?

I was blown away.

Ryan and Tatum O'Neal who play the lead characters of Moze and Addie are real life father/daughter, which plays into the charm of this film. Their on-screen dynamic is realistic and appealing. I had no idea that they were related until after I watched it, when I went perusing the internet for further information.
Addie is a feisty little tomboy who envies the women that Moze is often seen with throughout the movie. She wants to look more feminine, though Moze assures her she is just as pretty as her mother was.
Moze is a con artist with a soft spot for beautiful women, and eventually Addie. His conning skills are often overshadowed by Addie's ability to up the ante when it comes to value.

The overall story was appealing. They take you along on their adventures as father/daughter con artists', getting into drama along the way. It's one long road for Moze to take Addie to her new home with her aunt and uncle, leaving you hoping that they will get lost along the way and never end up to that fated destination.

The black and white filming was a huge factor in what made this film appealing, to me. When watching it, you really get a feel for the 1950's (as much as a girl born in 1991 can imagine, anyhow). The film is so clean, even for being filmed in the 70's.

GRAPHICS: 4 of 5 (taking into account it's such an old film)

OVERALL: 4 of 5. A must watch for fans of classic movies, quirky characters, and hilarious plots.

Summer Lovin'

Had the perfect beach day the other day with my sister and some of our homies. They're one of my favorite pairs of people to chill with, namely because they're sisters as well. It makes for the perfect dynamic.

Food is always involved in our hang out sessions, however this time we chose a different route and walked the block or so down the street to the beach. Waikiki is a tough place to find a good spot on the beach, especially during the peak of summer. It's overcrowded with tourists' and locals alike. We were lucky to find some free space, away from the beach bums (literally....they live on the beach and jack your shit while you're in the water).

Kaimana's is the spot we chose for our perch. Few tourists' venture that far down the Waikiki strip since it is a bit further from food stops and hotels. It's definitely worth the extra 5-10 minute walk.

Free of bums and crowds, it caters mostly to the locals for their beach barbecues and kids for their body boarding needs.

It lacks the "wall" that inner Waikiki provides, which means bigger waves (and on the downside, quite rocky in some places).

However, it's perfect for tanning with the occasional dip in the water to cool off.

I'm bummed to leave these ladies behind as I wander off on my travel adventure, but I always find myself back on da aina.

New Website!

I've been considering transferring my business to it's own website for quite some time. But I always came up with excuses: it's not successful enough, i'm too lazy, it costs' money, etc.

Finally, this past month I re-considered the benefits of having my own website. For one, it was much easier to tell people "Fabric Illusion.com" as opposed to "fabric illusion . etsy . com" or whatever host website I was currently using. That was the second issue. I transferred hosts' many times. From storenvy to etsy, to bigcartel. With my own URL I can change whatever host I want without changing the URL. And lastly, I discovered that with the right host, it's not that expensive! I'm paying barely $10 a year.

So now, It's finalized! Check out my new website. I'm still occasionally tweaking things. For now, I enjoy the sleek, simplicity of the theme I have chosen.

Feedback and thoughts are always appreciated!

This place was SO cute. I would never have found it if I didn't live in the area. It's hidden on a back street lodged in between some apartments down in Waikiki. The store itself was rather tiny, but very bright and inviting. As soon as you walk in you can see them baking the cookies.

You can buy them for $1.50 per cookie, $9 for a small can, or $13 for a larger can. I bought the small can which comes with 5 cookies. You can buy the pre-boxed ones or you can choose which flavors you want. I chose: mint chocolate chip, vanilla/strawberry, and coffee. The vanilla/strawberry was my favorite. SO delicious! Not too sweet. These cookies are excellent with coffee. They're not chewy, or doughy, or crunchy.

If you live in Hawaii or are in the area, definitely check it out! OR, they have the option to purchase online through their website. Let me know if you try them! :]

Back To Life

Wow, it's been almost a whole year since I have updated! What a shame. I've been feeling a bit stressed lately, and I recalled how blogging helped me relieve stress in the past, so I've returned!

So much has changed since last year. How about a quick overview for my first post back?

Moved to Rochester, New York with my boyfriend. That's where his family lives
Enjoyed our time there, but found that Hawai'i was calling us back.
Moved back to Oahu after 7 months.
Started working for Starbucks again.
Moved into Waikiki.
Started going back to college. (hatin it)
Re-gained my position as a Starbucks Supervisor.
Obtained our first "official" studio together! We've always rented rooms out of houses.

It's been an interesting and adventurous 12 months! I feel like I've been working non-stop since I moved to New York and back. But my work is finally starting to show. Soon I will be able to take a break!

The Art of Moving

My garage, currently.

I am no stranger to moving. In fact, as a military brat since the age of conception, I have moved more times than I can count on my two hands. Every two years, just about, we pack up and migrate to the next location.

This is not even my first time moving alone, though! However, the first try was a disaster, set me back TONS of money, and landed me right back where I started. Moving overseas is a lot more work than moving across solid land. Let me give you some bullet points on how it went.

Brought WAY too much stuff to begin with, including my dog...not smart when you're staying with someone temporarily until you find a place to live.
Didn't bring enough savings.
Family ended up disliking my boyfriend and, in turn, kicked us out.
Had no place to stay.
Had to spend money to fly back to Hawaii, along with dog, stuff, etc.
Hawai'i requires all animals flying in to be put in a very expensive quarantine for 3 months.
My puppy ended up breaking his leg in said quarantine and it "wasn't their fault".
Had to go through the re-hire process at my old job.
Luckily got our apartment back.

Grand Total (of money wasted/in debt): $10,000. (still paying that off >__>)

Lesson learned: PREPARE YOURSELF FOOL.

Another terrifying view.

This time around, we are diminishing most of our belongings. All that crap that you see above, will eventually either be eliminated or packed into my two suitcases. If it can't fit, it's most likely not going, save for a few books and my tattoo machine.

I've already sold over 150 of my books. Just re-reading that literally makes me want to throw a temper tantrum but, no going back so....got to move on!

This time, we are only traveling with our cat, and we are staying with his parents in Rochester, NY. AND Philip already has a job! We are much more on track this time.

However, I'm taking a risk, as I'm only bringing enough money for a one way flight (you never know what might happen).

Maybe not the smartest idea, but we are traveling much lighter and I have high hopes for this move!

We don't own a car, so this was how we migrated our boxes to the post office haha!! Good thing he skateboards. Six boxes of books may look like a lot, but if I hadn't sold those that I did, there would be at least 20.

I move on May 1st. Who knows when posts' will regulate, but I'll try to blog in my free time! You never know how much you have to do until you're moving, though!

You guys, check out my new layout! I finally gave up trying to revive my 8th grade HTML skills and gave in to purchasing a layout. I started out with a cheaper one until I start focusing on my blog more. I think this layout suits me well!! I love the tiny details and the colors!

I purchased the layout on Etsy from theDandelionGirl. It was only $5!!

When purchasing, you have the option to have her install it, as well as keeping the .psd files so that you can change them later.

It was incredibly easy to install!! Even if you have no HTML experience, I'd say on a scale of 1 to 10 easiness, it was a 9!

Butterbeer Recipe

Calling all my fellow Harry Potter nerd-lets! I recently found this recipe on tumblr and saved the image to remember to try it later on. About a week or so ago, I gave it a shot. It turned out pretty darn good!! Not exactly what I imagined butterbeer to taste like, but still a nice sweet treat.

Some extra tips:

-Add more cinnamon, because "a dash" is hardly even worth it....no taste.

-Use 8 oz. of milk. It says one mug which is kind of wishy-washy, but I used 8 oz. and it was perfect.

-Add the milk last, otherwise the cinnamon doesn't mix in too well.

Let me know if you guys try it! Any other butterbeer recipes you've tried? I remember trying one a while back and it was PERFECT, but I can't find it anymore.

Okay, madness is over so I can get back to blogging! Not that I was ever very regular about it haha. Need to change that.

Anyways, while looking for cute layouts for my blog, I stumbled across this website called, The Cutest Blog on the Block.
It really is a cute website, and their layouts are adorable! Though a little pricey for my current budget.

But that's not the point.
Point is, when I was browsing around a banner on their site caught my eye that read "Blog Books".
Turns out, it's exactly as it reads! A place where you can print your blog into book form!
I think this is a great idea, especially for DIY blogs and personal blogs.

Kawaii-Kon 2012

Ever since I moved to Hawai'i four years ago, I've been trying to get a table in the artist alley at Kawaii-Kon! They sell so quickly though, and they're a little pricey so I haven't managed to snag one!

However, this year I was lucky enough to find someone who was looking for a "partner" at their table! Or rather, someone to share the space with. I'M SO EXCITED! The convention is in 17 days though, and I only found out that I will be selling two days ago. So I am VERY pressed for time! I hope I can make it!

I'm very excited to meet people and see all the cosplay. I haven't been to an anime convention in two years! I'm having withdrawals haha.

Anyways, for those of you who attend conventions, what do you find yourself purchasing the most from the Artist Alley? And what fandoms are you looking forward to the most this year? I've heard a lot of "BBC Sherlock, Homestuck, Justice League, etc". Which is surprising, as none of that is anime related!! So what anime is popular with people these days, I wonder?

I will be sharing my updates as I go along with my preparations! I already made some homemade business cards this afternoon. They turned out pretty well! Now I need more printer ink haha. Will make a post for those another time!

Spotlight Sunday: Zach Cox

I haven't done a spotlight Sunday in a while, but I've been meaning to because I have a huge list of great artists' and musicians that I want to feature!

So this week, my feature is focused on Zach Cox. I have been following his art and comics for about 5 years now. He's a twenty-something year old dude from Salem, Oregon. Although he does do individual illustrations, I find his comics the most appealing. I originally found him on DeviantART, but he has since moved over to Tumblr.

Currently, he is running a comic called "Son of Sam." The main character's name is Walter and he absolutely hates his school. However, he's using this year to turn it around thanks to a girl named Avery. The story is about 5 chapters in, and I LOVE it! The characters are well thought out and quirky. And his art style is so unique! If you enjoy "lifestyle" type of comics, then this should be right up your alley!

Strangers into Friends

Ah! I haven't been blogging too much the past two weeks. I'm very busy filling out scholarships, putting together a tattoo portfolio, getting rid of stuff, packing for my move, etc! Last Saturday I participated in this HUGE "yard sale" with my mom. It was basically a bunch of military families in one spot selling their used stuff. Kind of like a swap meet. But we made $150 ($100 of which was from my stuff!). I had so much stuff it's not even funny, but I left with virtually nothing!!

While I love drawing for my tattoo portfolio, sometimes I just want to say "fuck it" to proportions and whatnot, so I draw these silly little caricatures of people that I enjoy!

I drew this one of Helaine. She's so beautiful and down to earth. And I adore her fashion sense.

During work, I received this dollar as a tip. Some guy had written his name and number on it, along with a message "let's be friends"! It wasn't the person who gave me the dollar who wrote it. So I texted the number! Turns out, he's from Guam, he's in the army, and he seems nice. Horray for talking to strangers. :]

And ending this post with a picture of me! I am applying to local modeling agencies in hopes I can break into that industry. I used to do modeling in 8th grade, but my look has drastically changed since then. Wish me luck! (My tattoos may be a turn off for them :p)

New Inkage &Things

First of all, how was everybody's Valentines Day? Did you spend it with a loved one? Alone? Friends/family? I hope it was enjoyable, however it went!

As for me, I decided to do something a little different this year. I've never been a huge celebrator of Valentines Day, though I do like receiving/giving out candy. However, this past year, I was not able to buy anything for my boyfriend for his birthday or Christmas. I'm in major debt from when my dog broke his leg. The surgery cost $10k! Can you believe that? But anyways, to make up for it, I promised myself that I would do something special for him for Valentines Day.

I got to thinking what I could get him, but everything just seemed...eh. Clothes he would just wear and get tired of in a few months. Music, nah. Skateboards would be broken within the month, etc.

Then I thought about what first attracted me to him....his interest in Japan, but first and foremost...his TATTOOS!

So what better to get him than a tattoo session!!

That's exactly what I did. There is one tattoo that he's been talking about getting since we started dating over 2 years ago.

So finally, I had it arranged!

This is his tattoo artist Q. He owns a shop in Kailua called House of Ink. They also have a shop in Waikiki. If you guys are ever on Oahu and want a tattoo, I strongly recommend them. He hires only the best artists'!

We got these done on Friday because we were unsure whether he would available on Valentines Day.

I also got a tattoo. The Daruma Doll that I had drawn!!

On actual Valentines Day we didn't do much, except hang out. However, I was woken up with breakfast in bed!! So grateful. He never does things like this. :]

He also bought me a new shirt that I've been wanting, as well as candy!

The day before Valentines Day I received the Rilakkuma Iphone case that I had ordered. Unfortunately, the following day I broke my Iphone. So sad....back to my old phone then. ;[

A camwhore photo of me. I forgot Philip got me this shawl for Valentines Day haha. I love it so much!

On a side note, I must say, I've been drinking tons of green tea and my skin looks GREAT. I always thought it was kind of a bluff, but I needed a cheaper alternative to my Starbucks addiction, so I turned to tea. And it's really working, I'm so happy!

My favorites so far are Apple Green Tea and also Blueberry/Pomegranate Green Tea!
