The repeating island

¿Cómo habré de llamarme cuando sólo me quede
recordarme, en la roca de una isla desierta?

All those irreplaceable women and men that said: "I do not want to go away".

All them stayed. And then they saw their friends abandoning the island, one by one.

One day, there were no more friends from their generation, so they started to make younger fellows. These also left. The same story repeated over and over. But they never got tired of saying goodbye. More important, they never got tired of welcome a new, out of the blue, friendship.

Nobody said it, or maybe some one did, but the fact is that they stayed to be part of other people's life. Their own life, in a way, was already lost, wasted, in that place without future or past. However, they were a huge influence in other people's future, once those got out of the island.

It was their experience of years and years of obstinacy, their records of small differences in the environment of the island, through decades of observation, what made of them such a valuable source.

Their memories. Their wrinkled skin. Their capacity of remain still in the shore. Like stones.

Would you like to see their faces? Their arms? Their stuffed smiles?

Wherever I go, visiting or staying, I am always inhabiting some kind of Havana experience. My Havana, of course. Aunque la intensidad de la luz amenace con tragarme.

¿Por qué todavía tengo que reconocer que, al menos una vez al día, si cierro los ojos no me imagino aquí -cualquiera que sea ese aquí- sino en La Habana? Y con todo, es La Felicidad.

- Lizabel Mónica Hoy desperté (en USA) y claro, pensé en La Habana, pero mi mente no despertó en ninguno de estos sitios. Mi mente no despertó en NINGÚN SITIO en particular. La sensación no fue grata.

- Lizabel Mónica Para mí, sólo puntos de llegada... no he salido de Cuba aún, no sé si lo sabré hacer alguna vez. Llegada pues. Llegadas. Los lugares se acumulan... Del mismo modo que estoy en USA estando en La Habana, es muy probable que cuando esté en La Habana no deje de estar en USA. Es este el punto sin regreso. Un punto ciego de estar y no estar.

In Columbia University, for pay my talk, somebody asked me for sign some kind of document where I had must to declare what is my race (and they mean classification of humans). What is my race? I write there: "latino". Then I signed the paper. Yea, is that a kind of race, a cultural competition.
I´m really angry when they don´t think in me like a cuban, or like a caribean or southamerican. They think on me on north. And this is not my north at all and never was. But is there where the identities´s player comes to me. I feel so confused then, that I go out of the tramp like a mouse. I just do what I must to do for my body becomes another thing. I go outdoors like a jew, and walk on the New York streets like non-white people do, the whole world shaking on the ritmo de mis caderas. I walk, while afroamerican people tell me things like "God bless you" or "Walk camera" (the eyes and the smile as a background of a lens of his fingers). And I´m in love of those moments. Moments when I´m being something that don´t have a name. Moments when I´m more near of the confuse than of the filiation. An emotive confusion. A truely non-place of (my?) indentity.
Todas esas capas que ahora me son orgánicas interactúan con el afuera violentando los estereotipos que pueden violentar para lograr conexiones, y también, dejando ir los estertores espontáneos de un aprendizaje que organizó sus preferencias de una manera profundamente arbitraria, inconsciente, desconocida en sus mecanismos...
Soy la otra que se encuentra fuera de contexto.

One hides the others. In it self. The paper is empty, except for the fact that is not just compose letters, it is not just the still untouched page.

We live on this paper. Me and the others. We breath on it. I eat the space when a touch the page. I eat space. Step by step, letter by letter, I touch more than the empty white background with my hands. Im still there, without control, living what it is only on my fingers. Yet. To work is to create this empty space in order to the one is coming. More than anything else, to write is retreats from oneself.
