Monday Club News - November 2009

We were lucky with the weather on the day of our autumn outing this year, and we set off just before eleven in the brightness of an October morning. Our driver, Jason, took us off towards Avebury, via Devizes and Beckhampton and then on along the Swindon road. We passed the Wootton Bassett turn off and then a bit further along we turned left to wander through the side roads, eventually coming to Lyneham via Dauntsey Banks. The countryside looked beautiful with quite a lot of autumn colour showing. From Lyneham we took the road through to Chippenham, arriving at the Brewers Fayre, Cepen Park for lunch. As this is a Premier Inn like the Frome Flyer where we have had good meals, we were hopeful that a delicious lunch awaited us. We were not disappointed, and thirty six of us tucked into the meal of our choice.

Being a modern building the facilities and access are very helpful, and we were seated in the spacious sun room which we had all to ourselves. In order to time our arrival home to meet those drivers not with us, Jason brought us back through Lyneham again, judging his timing to perfection. A grand day out.

A couple of weeks later Jan from Affordable Clothing visited us with her selection of dresses, cardigans etc., and then when everyone had made their purchases we celebrated Ella’s 90th birthday with a lovely iced cake given by her family.

We have recently received a generous cheque for £100 from the Bromham Carnival Committee, and we are very grateful for their continuing loyal support of the club.

Sadly our long standing relationship with Doreen Stroud has come to an end. Doreen’s health does not allow her to continue with her sales of cards for the Bath cancer unit, but she did kindly pass on some of her stock for our future purchases.

Claire Ladd [Organiser] on 0138085

THE MONDAY CLUB IS A COMMUNITY DAY CENTRE AND LUNCHEON CLUB FOR THE ELDERLY AND HOUSEBOUND RESIDENTS OF BROMHAM & ROWDE. IT IS GRANT AIDED THROUGH WILTSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL, AND SUPPORTED BY AGE CONCERN.

NHS nurses make switch in Devizes

Former NHS staff in Devizes are among the new recruits working at the privately-run NHS Treatment Centre.

The centre, in Marshall Road, Devizes, begins work next week carrying out day case minor operations on NHS patients from all over Wiltshire.

It is run by private company UK Specialist Hospitals and among the 39 employees are nurses who used to work at NHS hospitals.

These include several nursing staff who worked at the former Roundway Hospital for mental health patients and its successor Green Lane Hospital, which is across the road from the NHS Treatment Centre.

Christine Osland, who was born and brought up in Devizes and whose family still live there, was thrilled to get a job as endoscopy nurse at the centre.

Miss Osland has now moved back to Devizes from Bournemouth where she had been nursing for 13 years.

She started her career at Roundway Hospital and also worked at the former Princess Margaret Hospital in Swindon.

Julie Brown, a senior outpatients nurse, who was born in Devizes and lives in Bromham, started her career at Roundway Hospital as a nursing auxiliary and has also worked at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, and the Great Western in Swindon and latterly a private healthcare company.

Mrs Brown said: “It’s nice to be working at the treatment centre and giving something back to my local community. The centre is fully equipped and it will be a one stop shop for patients.”

Another local employee is Mandy Tomala, a senior healthcare assistant, who is from Devizes but has just moved to Hilperton.

Mrs Tomala worked at Roundway and Green Lane hospitals for 23 years. She said: “I have never worked in the private sector before but I liked UKSH’s vision.”

The centre employs 29 nursing staff, seven doctors (who also work at other UKSH centres), two receptionists and a manager.

Gazette & Herald - 29th October 2009

Monday Club News - October 2009

What a welcome extension to the season the recent fine weather has been, as it holds off the threat of winter a little longer. Although we have needed the heating on a Monday, the sun streaming through the windows has soon warmed the whole day up.

During September we were entertained by Jill and Bernie Martin one week. Jill energetically played her accordion while Bernie led the rest of us in singing a selection of old favourites. On the first Monday in October we were visited by Hilary McFall who is a prominent local organiser in the Samaritan’s Purse charity.

Having been directly involved in the distribution of Christmas shoeboxes to children for many years, Hilary was able to encourage our efforts with her enthusiastic descriptions of the joy this project brings to so many deprived youngsters. Already contributions are coming in for this year’s batch of boxes.

The day of our Autumn Fair on October the 10th dawned bright and sunny, and by 2:30 pm all was set for the opening with the usual stalls groaning under the generous contributions of our loyal supporters. As this is our main fund raising event of the year, we were a bit anxious that not as many people as usual attended. However those who did come must have spent very generously, and by the end of Monday when we sold a few more items to members who had been unable to come on Saturday, we were well on the way to our target of £600. To all those who supported us by either donating, helping or buying, we send a very big thank you.

If you’d like to join us on a Monday, do give me a ring, we’d love to see you. We can provide transport if you live in Bromham or Rowde.

Claire Ladd [Organiser] on 0138085

THE MONDAY CLUB IS A COMMUNITY DAY CENTRE AND LUNCHEON CLUB FOR THE ELDERLY AND HOUSEBOUND RESIDENTS OF BROMHAM & ROWDE.

Bromham u13

Pre season started in mid August and with a few hard weeks of fitness work we started our season with two enjoyable friendlies against fc Chippenham which resulted in 5-4 and 6-1 wins to Bromham.

Our opening league game was at home to Melksham Park.

After going a goal down early on the boys showed great character coming back to win 2-1.

Next game was away to Bath City.

Wheres Bromham ? I was asked by one of the Bath City parents!

Little village with plenty of character just like my team I replied.

Bromham started off on fire going into an early 2-0 lead.Bath responded just before half time to make it 2-1 at the break. The second half saw Bath lay siege to the Bromham goal ,Kai Nutland in the Bromham goal and great defending saw Bromham hang on for the victory.Great character!

Bemerton Heath Salisbury were the next visitors to the millenium field.

Bromham started slowly and went into half time 2-0 down.Goals from Fraser and a great strike from Charlie saw the score back to 2-2.Bromham were now pushing forward for the winner but a counter attack saw Bromham concede an own goal and a 3-2 defeat.Thats football!

How would the boys respond was going through my mind as we headed for our next fixture away to FC Calne?

No need for me to worry as the team put in a solid battling performance to emerge 3-0 winners.

In conclusion a really solid start to the season and our consolidation goal now seems the minimum of our expectations.

Well played boys.Special mentions to Alex Tyler and Lewis Read who each season up the anti to become key members of my squad.

Bromham victim of hit and run tells of agony

Shop worker Caroline Jones is still suffering severe pain after being sideswiped by a car as she walked to work three weeks ago.

Despite regular physiotherapy, 50-year-old Miss Jones, from The Crescent, Bromham, finds great difficulty sleeping and has been told she may have to put up with the pain for another four to six weeks.

She said: “I sleep in a chair at home with my arm in a sling. it is the only way I can get any relief at the moment.”

Her ordeal began on Thursday September 10 when she was walking to work at Collins’ farm shop on the A361.

She said: “Normally I drive to work but my car was in the garage being fixed. This car came along fitted with a towing mirror and hit me with it as it drove past.

“I was knocked sideways and was so shocked I couldn’t get the registration number. I just had an impression of an older style Volvo estate, which I think was dark blue.

“The pain was intense. I went to hospital and they told me I was lucky that the arm wasn’t broken. But the bone is chipped and there is a massive haematoma which is extremely painful.”

Miss Jones lives on her own and has had to rely on the help of friends to manage around the house. She said: “People have been very kind. I went back to work as soon as I could. It was better than sitting around at home. But I can’t cut my hedges, which is very frustrating.”

The police have been informed of the incident and Miss Jones has appealed to the driver to come forward.

She said: “I don’t think that is going to happen but it would be very nice if they would apologise for the pain they have caused me.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Devizes police on 0845 408 7000.

Waterbaby wonder from Bromham

Waterbaby Zara Petty-Fitzmaurice took to the pool and swam a whole length to raise money for the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children on Friday.

Two-year-old Zara, who has been swimming since she was three months old, aimed to complete an 18-metre swim at St Mary’s School in Calne to raise funds for the cause, and beat all expectations by making it to the end of the 25 metre pool.

Her mum Rebecca Petty-Fitzmaurice, of Bromham, said: “Zara did amazingly well.

“We had anticipated that she would manage 16 to 18 metres, but in the end she managed a whole length, which is 25 metres.

“The rest of the class had wiggles, which are like spongy floats, and they swam up with those.

“I swam beside her and my mum swam in front so she would go in the right direction because sometimes she veers off to one side, but nobody was holding on to her and she did not have arm bands or anything.”

Zara has been taking swimming lessons once a week with Waterbabies since she was three months old, and her one-year-old sister Isla is also learning to swim.

Mrs Petty-Fitzmaurice said: “I had seen an article about Waterbabies in a newspaper and there was a photo of a baby under water.

“I just thought it would be amazing and she loved it from the first second she went.”

The family chose to raise money for the Bristol hospital because some of Zara’s friends have been treated there.

“We have not finished raising the money yet, but we are tipping the £500 mark,” said Mrs Petty-Fitzmaurice.

“I thought that amount would be really nice but a bit ambitious. A close friend lost a baby recently and was very well cared for by the dedicated team of doctors and nurses, and several other friends take their children there for regular treatment.”

To sponsor Zara contact Above and Beyond on (01173) 700487 or visit www.aboveandbeyond.org.uk

Gazette & Herald - 10th October 2009
