Join the VARA Race Entry Procedure Forum!
Do you have ideas on what VARA can do to improve our race entry procedure? Are you willing to participate in a discussion on what we can do to make things better?
At the recent VARA membership annual meeting I was given the task of drafting a proposal that would potentially change how VARA member clubs accept entries to races in Vermont. The initial suggestion was that I should pull together a working group of race administrators. However, based on the animated discussion that this topic generated, it became obvious that coaches wanted a say in this as well. I can easily imagine that athletes and parents would like to give their input.
In order to draw in as many participants as possible, I have set up an online discussion forum at <http://skiracehelp.net/simplemachinesforum/>. If you would like to be heard, please register.
Some Teaser Questions: •Is it acceptable to require athletes to use a service that adds an administrative fee onto the price of the race? •Do we want to be early adopters of the USSA online race registration feature or do we want to sit back and see if it works first? •Under what circumstances are we comfortable holding onto the race-fee of an athlete that registered by didn’t attend the race? •Does anybody still fax in race entries? •Should entry fees and lift-tickets be separate charges?
Ultimately, the VARA Board of Directors has final say on what these policies are. Additionally, our policies must be consistent with USSA. However, the VARA BOD is typically supportive of recommendations that have been reached by a broad consensus after good discussions.
The primary target is to look at USSA scored races. However, I have set up threads for all categories of races: U10, U12, U14, non-scored U16 and FIS. I think it’s worthwhile to look at all of these while we are at it.
More broadly, if this forum is productive, it could expand to tackle other policy issues that tend to get lost in the shuffle.
Thanks for reading this. Please join the discussion if you are interested.
-David Iverson VARA BOD Alpine Officials Committee
(Disclaimer: I’ve never run an online forum before, so I’ll be learning as I go. In order to keep spammers out, I’ll be approving all registrations manually. I’ll also be moderating things pretty heavily. The goal is to be efficient and on-task in moving towards workable policies.)

We’ve managed to endure one of the craziest weather winters anybody can recall. Although the weather was a challenge for the entire year, the BOC managed to have a very successful year. JISP, the mid-week program and weekend program saw unequaled growth in participation. We also managed to host 34 of the 35 events we had scheduled in the fall. Our athletes also performed with great success, Mikayla Lathrop was crowned top J4 in Vermont( and has regional competition ahead), Mark Nebraska and Allie Zeigler both placing 2nd in overall Vermont Cup standings for J1/2′s( Mark only missing the top spot by only one point and Allie’s injury taking her out of competition with 2 events to go) and Burr and Burton repeating as Vermont State High School Boys Champions for 2012. While not all of our athletes saw podium finishes, this year our BOC skiers and riders had a great deal of success in developing the skills needed to attain those top results and many found personal best performances during the year. It was very satisfying to see the growing passion our athletes exhibited all winter long, no matter what the weather dished out to us.

All in all, our 61st season was a great year. Like you, we too are frustrated by the abrupt end to the ski season and wish it could go on a bit longer ( the Sugar SL is now 3/31&4/1).

Thank You, to all the parents, volunteers, athletes, coaches, board members and staff who made the 2011/2012 a great season for the BOC.

Unfortunately, other events going on this weekend have me away and I will not be around on Saturday to participate in any festivities or to say good-byes. I will be at Gunstock with Michael Duddy and Peter Denious who will be racing in the Piche GS.
I may stop by Sunday morning on my way to the airport- going to see Grandma for her 101st birthday bash (cake and tea).
All of the J5 coaches thank parents and athletes for a great season- lots of great skiing despite the lack of natural snow.
We had a lot of fun this year- hope ya’ll did too.

And I am sorry that I will miss you on Saturday. If we are open next weekend, I’ll be at the mountain.

Since it was too late for that purpose, we have elected to auction off a official women’s team jacket (size 10) and a official team issue DH suit( adult small) at our Saturday Beach Party BBQ. Surfs up, see ya at the beach.

As you look outside today anywhere in the northeast, it appears more like May then March. The forecast for the coming week is calling for more warm weather and is forcing us to consider making some changes to our traditional season ending events scheduled for the weekend of March 24th and 25th. We currently are considering moving our club championship, JISP race and year end social to the coming weekend of March 17th and 18th. These events and the already scheduled Pabst race, Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge and J 1/2 will need to be rearranged for the coming weekend(3/17&18). We hope to have a revised schedule completed by Wednesday(3/14) and you will be able to join us for an action packed weekend. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

BOC J4 Racers
Congratulations to the BOC J4 Racers for making the
VARA State Championship Team:
Eliza, Mairead, Libby, Mikayla, Liam, Will. Peter, Ryan

For those that didn’t make the team, you should still feel proud that you contributed
a winning attitude, moral support and a really fun year of training that helped
you and your teammates enjoy great progress this year.

The weather this week and for the coming weekend looks warm. Not good.
Therefore, as always, we must be flexible.

First, as always, there will be training and free-skiing for the J4′s who did not make
the States team. Second, for those who did not make the team, please consider
coming up to Pico to cheer on your teammates. It’s only a 1-hour drive from
Bromley to Pico. The race hill is right at the bottom of the mountain, so no lift
tickets are required to enjoy the festivities. Forth, as always, all J4 racers are
welcome to join in any of the training for the States team, whether you’re racing
or not.

For Saturday we will have gate training when (am or pm) possible. Terrain- TBD. This rain may change things for our training on Saturday.

Congratulations to Michael Duddy and Peter Denious who qualified for the Francis Piche Invitational Championship race held at Gunstock, NH in two weeks. SVC was given 13 slots for boys and 11 slots for girls. If you are interested in seeing the council race results, I will have them with me on Saturday.

Safe travels,

Lily, Mac, and Laura are running the show this coming weekend as I’m away. I expect full cooperation from everyone, parents included!

Rip it up and I’ll see you next weekend,
