ARNIE STAPLETON, AP Pro Football Writer

He’s a big, raw Denver Broncos quarterback with throwing issues who worked with UCLA offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone on his own time to fix flaws.

Sound familiar?

While Tim Tebow’s messy mechanics needed tons of work, Brock Osweiler needs more tweaks than anything, and he worked this offseason with Mazzone, who was his offensive coordinator at Arizona State and also served as Tebow’s throwing coach.

The Broncos’ second-round draft pick took the field at Dove Valley for the first time Friday, participating in the team’s three-day rookie minicamp.

Although his right elbow at times dropped below his shoulder and winged out a bit, the 6-foot-8 quarterback showed he’s making plenty of progress in capitalizing on his superior size.

Originally selected by the San Diego Chargers in the second round (46th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft out of Tuskegee, Florence started 43 of 74 games for the Chargers totaling 237 tackles and 10 interceptions with 38 passes defensed before signing a six-year, $36 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. They have Peyton Manning and a young team led by John Fox ready to make a jump in 2012.

Peyton Manning gets the Broncos in the top 10. What was up with the Broncos opting out of the first round of the draft? You see, taking a guy in the first round requires cash. Literally, real money. Denver wasn’t going to spend it, and was perfectly content getting extra picks. Now the question is how much of an impact can second-round DE/DT Derek Wolfe make? The thought here is plenty.

The Broncos have axed general manager Brian Xanders, this coming after a Monday morning meeting with boss John Elway.

“It was tough because I have a great deal of respect for Brian as a football man but also as a person,” Elway said. “Even more so as a person. He was very helpful to me in this first year getting acclimated back to the NFL. I owe him a lot. Just from the conversation we had, we just thought for his career and for the Broncos we felt that now was the best time to go a different way.”

The 41-year-old Xanders was with the Falcons in a number of roles before be came to the Broncos as the assistant general manager by then-coach-football operations boss Mike Shanahan after the 2008 NFL Draft.

He was promoted to GM by Josh McDaniels, a position he held until Monday. Xanders has one year left on his contract.

“John and I had a lengthy conversation today and we mutually decided to part ways for the best interest of my career aspirations,”’’ Xanders said.

“I appreciated everything that Pat Bowlen has done for the Broncos and for bringing me here in 2008. It was great working coach John Fox. I’m telling you, he’s a great coach to work with. And it was great working with John Elway.”

The general manager position had long been Xanders’ dream position but his first big gig never came with the final-say authority on roster personnel. Shanahan had final say in 2008, McDaniels had the power in 2009-10 and then Elway was hired to take control of the front office in 2011-12.

“No question, I think everybody would like to have that position with that type of control, especially a general manager,” Elway said. “

“That was something we discussed. Hopefully, someday Brian will be in that position where he is making all the decisions in the end. That is a desire of his. He knows a lot of people in this league and is well-respect in the league.”

After two weeks of sales data following the release of the 2012 NFL schedule, the Denver Broncos are fetching the second-highest average ticket price on secondary ticket website TicketLiquidator. It looks like the addition of Peyton Manning to a playoff team has ignited one of the most diehard fanbases in sports and propelled the average price of a Denver Bronco game ticket in 2012 to $283, up from an average of $141 last year. No doubt the addition of one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history has given Denver fans a reason for optimism, as the only team that is averaging a higher ticket price is the New England Patriots. But even in that case, the Broncos vs. Patriots game at Gillette is the most in-demand single game ticket, so the Patriots numbers are actually being inflated by Denver!

“We’re seeing a lot of attention on the Denver Broncos early this season,” said Andres Hidalgo, Ticket Liquidator media relations. “The Broncos have always had one of the most dedicated fan bases in sports, so it’s no surprise that adding a quarterback the caliber of Manning has caused ticket sales to explode.”

The hottest tickets for a Bronco home game so far are the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 9 and the New Orleans Saints on October 28. Looming extra-large on the Broncos away schedule, Denver travels to New England to take on Manning nemesis the New England Patriots on October 7. This game is currently the most expensive regular season NFL ticket on the Ticket Liquidator. Marching into Gillette and taking out Brady and co. would be a great way to atone for the terrible end to last season. Here is a look at the average individual game price for all games on the Broncos schedule in 2012.

Sales data comes from the first two weeks of on-sales following the release of the NFL schedule, and represents the average price a fan paid on more than 2,000 tickets sold on Ticket Liquidator. Keep in mind the prices shown are the average ticket price, and if you visit Ticket Liquidator you will see tickets above and below the average price shown here.

Along with the Broncos and Patriots [$319 average ticket price], the highest sellers in the AFC are the Pittsburgh Steelers [$265], Baltimore Ravens [$211] Houston Texans [$212], and the New York Jets [$214]. Unfortunately for Bronco fans (or maybe not), the Broncos will not take on the New York Jets and Tim Tebow in 2012- at least not during the regular season!

In the NFC, the Green Bay Packers [$277] are currently the big sellers, selling at a higher average price than even the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants [$222]. Other NFC teams with an average ticket price above $200 include the Dallas Cowboys [$215], New York Giants [$222] and the Chicago Bears [$213].

You might think it’s insane that people are willing to spend this kind of money, but the fact is they are. People sure love their football!

And in case you were wondering how this year’s hot tickets compare to last year’s here’s a look at the average ticket price for each team during the 2011 NFL season:

The Broncos took the player they hope will be the apparent to QB Peyton Manning, as the team selected Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler with the 57th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Denver signed Peyton Manning to a five-year, $96 million contract in March, which buys the team some time to develop the 6-foot-7, 242-pound Osweiler, who was recruited to play basketball at Gonzaga before deciding to pursue a football career.

A one-year starter at Arizona State, Osweiler completed 412-of-680 pass attempts for 5,082 yards with 33 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, adding four rushing touchdowns during his 25-game career.

“I couldn’t be more excited to go to Denver and learn from Peyton Manning,” Osweiler said according to the club. “I look at it as a tremendous opportunity.”

The Broncos went defense with their first pick of the draft, as with the fourth pick in round two the team snagged Cincinnati DT Derek Wolfe.

2012 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

Wolfe projects as a possible 3-4 defensive end because of his height and girth. He has a good motor that uses his hands well to establish control and move defenders. Plays with a great pad level which is great for a player of his size.

Comes from a bit of a troubled home life, but seems to have found his way in recent years. His family life aside, the young man has a tremendous future on the football field. He does more things well than most other players. His athleticism and burst coming off the line of scrimmage are average, if that. He’s not going to win any awards because of his first step agility or closing speed. What he does well is hold his ground and fight for position along the line.

Wolfe plays with an edge and an attitude every snap. He’s not a dirty player by any means, but he’s willing to scrap. Against the run, he’s tough to misdirect. He can take a block and manipulate a blocker where he doesn’t want to go.

Every team in the NFL would love to add a young man like this in the third or fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Former Eagles and Broncos safety Brian Dawkins has announced his retirement, tweeting out the following earlier Monday about this 16-year NFL career.

The Lord has blessed me to play in the NFL for 16 years. I would like to thank the Eagles & the Broncos 4 believing In me. I would like 2 thank all my teammates & Coaches that I have been blessed 2 go to battle with. Along with u, the fans 4 helping make my career 1 that i have enjoyed tremendously. In other words. I am announcing my retirement from the NFL. #BBTB

Dawkins was drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 1996 NFL Draft out of Clemson and played for Philadelphia until his release in 2009. Dawkins then signed with the Broncos, where he played until his contract expired at the end of the 2011 season.

A nine-time Pro Bowl selection, Dawkins is a member of the Philadelphia Eagles 75th Anniversary Team, the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team and the 20/20 Club (20 sacks, 20 interceptions).
