Kimberly Snyder Returns Home

Those of you that frequent the Bronto Blog will recognize Kimberly Snyder, a former Bronto Account Manager who has recently returned to the team.

Kimberly has been living on the West Coast and was the Email Marketing Manager at online retailer Altrec.com. At Altrec, Kimberly managed all aspects of promotional and transactional email marketing campaigns. Missing the unique culture, friendships and opportunity for career growth, Kimberly has made her way back to the East Coast and Bronto. Kimberly is working as an Email Marketing Strategist and will again be providing Bronto’s clients with outstanding advice on email marketing best practices and email campaign optimization. She will also be bringing her newly acquired online retail experience to blog posts in the near future.

Happy Halloween from Bronto!

Bronto celebrated Halloween on Friday, October 30th in style. With nearly 100% participation, Brontos dressed up as their favorite character, group, or “thing.” But the celebration kicked off earlier in the week with a company-wide decorating contest, where teams rallied together to decorate their respective work spaces.

Bronto’s Client Services Team won the glory and gold (a gift card to Tyler’s Taproom) with their stunning rendition of The Addams Family mansion. They also won the award for best group costume, in keeping with their decorating theme, they dressed as The Addams Family. From the “Soggy Bronto Bottom Boys” to celebrating the Holidays, to The Addams Family - the competition was tough, but The Addams Family came out ahead.

For the individual costume winner many strong contestants entered to win, such as The Killer Bee, The IT Guy, the “pimp,” doctor, Data (from Star Trek: The Next Generation), but in the end the crowd applauded for Data with the most fervor. Data - as expected, showed no emotional enjoyment in the victory.

At Bronto, we work hard and the last four months have been no exception. The entire Bronto team worked towards another product milestone, the Bronto 2009 Fall Release. Just take a look at what this release entailed.

Since the release went live Sunday, Oct. 4th, it was only fitting that Bronto celebrated with the first ever BrontOberfest - a celebration of Bronto accomplishments while welcoming the Fall season.

During lunch, the Bronto team was treated to a true Bavarian feast complete with authentic German food (wienerschnitzel, pretzels, bratwurst, potato salad) which was paired with a hearty German beer. During the celebration, the Bronto Headquarters in Durham, NC could have been easily confused with a small town in Deutschland.

With long “bier hall” tables setting the stage, Brontos enjoyed the themed lunch with cheers of “Prost!” to celebrate the long hours of hard work to make the Bronto application more powerful, help clients to use Bronto better and ultimately help our clients become better marketers.

Bronto is excited to welcome Scott Wood and Michael “Moose” Musolf to our Territory Sales team.

Scott Wood just relocated to Durham from the other “Big D,” Dallas. Scott brings over 10 years of experience in sales to Bronto. Most recently, Scott was an Account Executive with Forrester Research where he sold IT research, services and consulting.

When not pounding the phones looking for new sales opportunities, Scott can be found cheering on his beloved Texas A&M Aggies. Warned that living in the Triangle requires fan-ship of either Duke, NC State or Carolina - Scott has already chosen the Wolfpack as his local team. In addition to sports, Scott is also a theater buff. Keep an eye out for him at the local Little Theater, he may be headlining a play in the near future.

Michael “Moose” Musolf is also an experiences sales professional. He brings over 15 years of experience in research, print and direct mail sales to Bronto. Michael’s last sales role was with StrikeIron. Michael started as an Enterprise Sales Executive and quickly moved into a Partner Manager role.

Michael is expecting his first child early next year. Baby Musolf will have plenty of buddies to play with - the Musolf’s currently have 3 dogs and 6 cats, all rescued from shelters. Michael is very active and enjoys running. We definitely expect him to join the rest of the Bronto Triathletes next summer in the annual Sprint Triathlon.

Ragin Cajun Joins Bronto

Jeff Beardsley joined Bronto October 1st as the Director of the new Production Engineering Department. Jeff and his family are relocating to Durham, NC from Northern Virginia and will be bringing some Cajun flair with them.

Jeff originally hails from Louisiana and after majoring in mechanical engineering he went to straight to EDS and entered their heralded Developers Program. Jeff has founded a couple of technology consulting ventures and is very familiar with building and managing teams. For the last 7 years, Jeff has been in the Software as a Service (SaaS) space. First with VOVICI, an enterprise survey software organization and NEMEA, compliance and remediation software.

Outside of work, Jeff enjoys spending time with his family especially watching sports and cheering the LSU Tigers and Washington Redskins to victory. Jeff is also a history buff and enjoys watching old school World War II movies, his favorite being 1949’s Battleground.

Bronto and the Bocce Battles

Bronto was proud to present the first and hopefully, not last, Downtown Durham Bocce Battles with co-sponsor CMG Partners. From Monday, Sept. 21st - Wednesday, Sept. 30th, over 60 players representing six local businesses duked it out during lunch breaks and after work over bocce matches. The goal of this tournament was to bring local businesses and employees closer together through these matches. I often heard players say they’ve seen other professionals on the American Tobacco Campus, but never had a reason to say hi or get to know them better. Now after playing a bocce match, former competitors not only say hi in passing, they’re becoming friends and making connections.

So, why bocce? This easy-going lawn game is the perfect way to get out and enjoy the day without having to over exert yourself physically. Teams can compete for 10-30 minutes during the day without affecting their work schedules.

The tournament was intense but players were always lighthearted. Most just enjoyed the ability to meet new people and play a fun game of bocce. After a week of play, it was down to four teams. On Wednesday, Sept. 30th the final teams met to play. The teams: Kid-n-Play (McKinney), Palin 2012.5 (Bronto Software), Team 1 (Square 1), and The Big Lebocce (Bronto Software) battled it out for the title of Downtown Durham Bocce Battles champion and the coveted prize of a $50 gift card to Tyler’s Tap Room. After a very tough battle between Team 1 and Palin 2012.5 (you can see why in the video below), Bronto’s Palin 2012.5 reigned victorious. Palin 2012.5 is a team composed of Adam Covati, Product Manager and John Gunther, Technical Writer/eLearning Specialist and was inspired by a cardboard cut out of Sarah Palin. However, all players and guests were winners as for the final celebrations, everyone enjoyed beer from Tyler’s on a near perfect afternoon, socializing with other American Tobacco Campus employees.

Bronto looks forward to helping to organize another tournament with local business in the future. Cornhole anyone?

It’s that Time of the Year! Bronto Family Picnic

Summer just isn’t complete without a good old-fashioned family picnic. On Saturday, Sept. 19th, only a handful of days before the beginning of Fall, Bronto held its yearly picnic at the Few’s Ford shelter at the Eno River State Park. Eno River State Park which boasts 3,900 acres of preserved forests and trails is only a short drive from the Bronto HQ and is an ideal location for an easy escape from downtown Durham.

Southern style BBQ, rolls and sweet tea were provided by Bronto from a local restaurant. Brontos who attended the picnic showed up with a plethora of sides ranging from pasta salad to packages of Klondike bars.

The location at Eno River State Park allowed Brontos and their families to explore nearby playing fields for games of whiffleball and frisbee as well as a chance to take walks along the Eno River.

These yearly picnics are family friendly and tend to bring out Brontos that may not be able to attend weekday events. Given the relaxed nature of these picnics, it’s a great opportunity to spend a Saturday afternoon learning more about fellow Bronto teammates while enjoying good food, games and the great outdoors.

School Supply Drive at Bronto

Recently, the Bronto Community Service Committee held a school supply drive for a local elementary school. Bethesda Elementary School, located in Durham, NC, is in desperate need of basic school supplies. Seventy-eight percent of the students from that school live at or below the poverty line. It is well-known that teachers across the country routinely pay for extra supplies in their classrooms with their own money, a generous gesture that has too often become a necessity. However, when the need is so severe, most teachers simply can’t afford to make up that great a difference.

When the community committee received Bethesda’s call for help, Bronto answered. The entire company was challenged to donated the varied school supplies and books needed. To add a dose of healthy competition, Bronto CEO Joe Colopy pledged to the department with the most donations, a $100 Tyler’s Restaurant and Tap Room gift card. Between the desire to help local children and a bit of office competition, the school supplies soon began streaming in. Over two weeks, Brontos brought the following items to the office:

431 books/games
68 packs of paper
92 notebooks
223 folders
55 glue sticks
26 hand sanitizers
14 boxes of zip lock bags
32 rulers
85 packages of crayons/markers
90 boxes pencils/pens
27 boxes of tissues
171 miscellaneous items

That yielded a grand total of 1,314 school items donated! All departments contributed immensely to the overall goal. However, in a last-minute push for success, Marketing/Lead Qual emerged victorious!

5th place: Engineering - 135 items
4th place: Client Services - 183 items
3rd place: Sales - 258 items
2nd place: Product/Ops/AM Partner - 357 items
1st place: Marketing/Lead Qual - 381 items

We hope that the children at Bethesda get full use of these items as they pursue their education. Many thanks to the community committee and all Brontos who donated to this worthy cause. Between volunteer hours and item donations, Bronto is helping the community one glue stick at a time.

Bronto now serving Haggis

Usually when a new employee starts Bronto, we produce a short video introducing them to the fans of BrontoNation. Since Caroline Smith, editor of BrontoNation and video editor extraordinaire, is out on vacation, we will have to do without the multimedia this time. So, without further ado; please welcome Jeff Turner to the Bronto Team.

Jeff has joined our development team as a Software Engineer. Jeff joined Bronto after owning his own web company that focused on user engagement analysis and user loyalty. His company was bought by Feedburner and then by Google; he worked with both organizations managing large volumes of traffic and data.

His short term goals are to get a better idea of the volume of email and data that passes through our application currently and what amount of growth in volume we are forecasting. From there he wants to noodle on some ideas on how to handle additional volume and scale the growth. He is looking to take from his past experiences and apply the practices he has used in the past to scale growth and apply them to Bronto’s technology.

Outside of work, Jeff enjoys spending time with his family; playing soccer with his young son and making music with his daughter. Jeff plays guitar and now that his daughter is taking piano lessons they plan on entertaining family and friends. He is also a huge college football fan and he tries to take in as many NC State and Appalachian State games as possible. His family also enjoys watching movies together with Ponyo and Up being two of his recent favorites.

Last year Jeff had the opportunity to travel to Scotland with a native Scot and spend some time there fly fishing, hiking and searching for Nessie. While in Scotland, Jeff even partook of the local cuisine and dined on Haggis (yes, that would be sheep liver, lung and heart) and he is planning on serving it up to the rest of Bronto for lunch and learn one day soon.

Jeff, welcome to Bronto! We are excited to have you on board - but you might want to rethink that Lunch and Learn choice, please!

Traveling Bronto: Oh What a Journey!

Here at Bronto, we take our Traveling Bronto seriously. Bronto goes with us on our trips and we reach new heights with Bronto. But it’s not all fun and games. Bronto also keeps us company during long work hours at the office. Many a Traveling Bronto will leave the Bronto HQ to greet new Bronto clients, those considering Bronto’s application or those just interested in Bronto as a company. Not long ago we gave away many Traveling Brontos to local tweeple at the Triangle Tweetup. One of those individuals known as @updownmostly “kidnapped” a Bronto and challenged his YouTube viewers to send Bronto around the world.

Little did anyone at Bronto realize the journey that our beloved Traveling Bronto was about to go on. Recently @updownmostly alerted us that Bronto had completed the hopefully first leg of the expedition with a trip through Ohio, Virginia, and Maryland courtesy of Roberta Norman.
