The 10-minute Buff Bride Arm Workout

Wearing a strapless dress for your wedding or any occasion coming up soon? Check out this quick and effective 10 minute arm workout that will have your arms looking sexier than ever!

This weekend I am going to one of my dear cousins wedding. I am SO excited for this event…I am literally counting down the hours. ALL of my amazing girls cousins who are like sisters to me will be there and there will be lots of food, fun, laughs and just extreme happiness.

Preparing for her wedding brought me back to the borderline extreme fitness measures I took when I was getting ready for the big day 9 years ago. I exercised twice a day, ate clean and got to my lowest weight in my adulthood.

I vividly remember my arms being the main focus of my workouts. Since my dress was a strapless princess ballgown, I knew all eyes would be on the guns!

Today I’m sharing The 10-minute Buff Bride Arm Workout. The awesome peeps over at Bowflex shared some amazing gifs that demonstrate exactly how to do the moves. Enjoy!

Exercise physiologist and Bowflex Fitness Advisor Tom Holland developed the following strength training workout for brides who are ready to get toned before the big day. Holland recommends completing the above moves in 2-3 sets of 10-15 repetitions for a circuit-style workout. For maximum results, complete the workout three times each week on non-consecutive days. Be sure to use weights that are more challenging for the last few repetitions.

How I AvoidTheOops In My Household!

Living in the inner city, I have pretty much mastered the art of getting more done in the name of convenience. I am the queen of Uber, Peapod, and of course since I am the inventory manager of the home, I do my BEST to stay on top of necessary household items such as toilet paper, dish washing liquid and pretty much everything else. I am all about convenience because who wants to be lugging a 24 count toilet tissue bag on the train?! Not I.

SAMSUNG CSC

There have been so many times when I have come home after a long day of work and all I’m doing is looking forward to hitting the couch. Except oops, there are no garbage bags, and/or oops we ran out of toilet paper or oops no more dish detergent. That sinking feeling that I will actually have to put clothes on and run to the nearest convenience store is just plain ole defeating.

I try to avoid the oops as much as I can by planning ahead, sometimes I buy multiple paper towels and bags and bags of toilet paper to be prepared but eventually it ALL runs out. The trick is staying ahead of the game!

SAMSUNG CSC

The AvoidtheOops website from Walmart helps you stay ahead of the household item black hole by keeping the most needed household items all on one website. You no longer have to navigate huge websites for the basic necessities. I was able to shop there for some basic necessities that we can’t function without including:

  • Toilet paper: Because OMG I’m pretty sure my boys are eating the paper for breakfast
  • Dish washing liquid: We go through a LOT of dish washing liquid, maybe because my worst nightmare is going to bed with a dish full of dirty dishes
  • More detergent: Because never ending laundry
  • Mr. Clean: I know there are a ton of different cleaning agents out there but something about the classic smell of Mr. Clean makes my cleaning experience a bit more enjoyable.
  • Puffs Facial Tissues: I mainly buy these because I have some fancy tissue holders in my bathroom, and it looks so good when filled!—however it only lasts about a week in my home because…boys.
  • Deodorant for the Man: I got him some of his favorite Old Spice because, we simply can’t have enough. Hello summertime!
  • Febreeze: Because…boys…need I say anymore?

Noosa Yoghurt Sweet & Spicy New Flavors-8350

Last week I was invited to The Brooklyn Kitchen for a fun event celebrating noosa’s new sweet and spicy flavors. I was a bit scared because I am not all that adventurous when it comes to eating—between my allergies and my plain dislike for entire food groups I was very worried that this even would push me way out of my comfort zone.

Noosa Yoghurt Sweet & Spicy New Flavors-8359

You may remember when I visited The Brooklyn Kitchen late last year for the Buick event. I can’t believe this is only my second trip back but I was happy to return. The space is so beautiful and was transformed specially for noosa yoghurt.Noosa Yoghurt Sweet & Spicy New Flavors-8404

When I arrived there was a mixologist mixing cocktails for all the guests, I didn’t partake because there was no virgin drinks, but I can vouch that everything LOOKED good.

Noosa Yoghurt Sweet & Spicy New Flavors-8368 Noosa Yoghurt Sweet & Spicy New Flavors-8369

Next I headed over to the charcuterie station where there was plenty of sweet and spicy snacks—as I mentioned before I was a wee bit petrified to try all of this flavor but I bit the bullet and tried a small slice of toast with jalapeño jelly. The flavor explosion was immediate and the heat followed right after. I am surprised to say that I didn’t mind it, it was pretty incredible. It wasn’t a situation that had me running for an entire jug of milk but it was a manageable tasty bite. This gave me confidence to jump in and try the new noosa flavors without any reservations.

The Noosa Yoghurt Sweet & Spicy Bar

There was a noosa yoghurt bar set up with plenty of flavors of yoghurt, fruit purees (which are like my favorite thing in the world) and spicy elements to put on top. For my first creation I put pineapple puree, mango puree, strawberry rhubarb puree with a dollop of vanilla noosa yoghurt and a generous amount of chili oil. I didn’t know what I was doing, there was absolutely no rhyme or reason—

IT WAS SO GOOD.

Noosa Yoghurt Sweet & Spicy New Flavors-8384

I ate it really (and quite embarrassingly) fast, something about the fruit and the noosa yoghurt calms kick of the chili oil. The combination was quite fun and I couldn’t believe that I actually enjoyed it so much. So I did what anyone else would do, I made another to take home. This time with a really awesome labeled container from the artist on site. My husband is really into adult coloring but I think I will keep this one for myself. :)

The Lamb Chops From Heaven

Noosa Yoghurt Sweet & Spicy New Flavors-8370

Honestly I’m not that much of a lamb chop girl. I’ve had it once or twice in my lifetime and I’ve never made it at home. That ALL changed on this day. We had a professional chef show us that you can actually marinade lamb chops (or pork) in noosa yogurt and the result is pretty much out of this world.Noosa Yoghurt Sweet & Spicy New Flavors-8374

He wasn’t kidding. The lamb chop was hands down the best I’ve ever had (yes in all three times!) and everyone who tried it agreed that it was the most tender and delicious piece of meat they have ever had. It was phenomenal! Now I need to try this at home. IMMEDIATELY!

What I really wanted to do was tell you all about this baby, this little man, the child that helped birth this blog because without him in my belly I don’t think I would have had the courage to start writing. Instead I want to write something for him because I want him to know how I felt in this very special moment. The moment he ended pre kindergarten.

*******

Jacob,

When I dropped you off at preschool last September, I knew you would be just fine. I didn’t cry like I did with your brother because something about the way you are gives me confidence that every single thing is ok.

I was right.

Pre-K-8317

You made friends SO quickly, when you walk down the halls everyone calls your name–teachers, security guards, kids who aren’t even in your class. You show them that infectious smile and just like that, they are hooked! You’re teacher calls you the president, she said “Jacob has so much personality and that will get him everywhere”.

I can see that.

As you came down the aisle for your pre-k ceremony you really could not stop smiling and waving to me daddy and mama. You waved, every three minutes to be exact. You were over the moon with excitement.

Pre-K-8301

For your performance they put you in the front and the middle because let’s be honest, that’s is where you belonged. You danced your heart out but not before taking a few seconds in between to wave to us from the stage.

SAMSUNG CSC

Sometimes I feel bad Jacob, because you witness some of the challenges we have with your very spirited and strong willed brother. You may even see me spend extra time with him to keep him calm and collected. I can’t deny you were always the easy one–and I thank you for your patience.

You are a bit of a daredevil, a dancer, a singer, and you back down to no challenge no matter how big. You have qualities that I wish I had myself. You are extremely forgiving, patient and jolly. You have a magnetic personality and I can’t wait to see you shine in Kindergarten.

Pre-K-8339

You deserve the absolute best.

You are so excited for grade school, you will finally able to board the school bus with your brother which is something you have wanted to do for 2 whole years!! Finally, it’s your turn! You play with your school bus toys daily and get so excited when you see on one the streets. I wish I could ride your first ride with you.

I’m SO proud of you Jakey. I am SO excited for your kindergarten debut.

Pre-K-8334

Love,

Mom.

Running my first marathon was tough, hard and probably the best thing I ever did. I am sharing 15 mistakes that I won't make for my second marathon!

15 Mistakes I’m Not Making for My Second Marathon

When I ran NYC last year, I was scared. Like terrified out of my mind. The actual experience was bittersweet, I had a good time and at parts I had a really horrible time. I’ve signed up again this year not only to beat my time from last year but really put my best foot forward with training. There were a couple of mistakes that I made and a few things that I would like to change.

  1. Get a training plan that works for me: I trained with the NYRR Virtual Trainer last year, and even though I have the plan from last year I won’t be using it this year because it was simply too intense for me. With my work schedule and such, there was NO way I could complete 8 miles on a Tuesday. I’ve picked a bit more of a flexible plan (still tough) but manageable.
  2. Get a new job in the middle of training: When I decided to get a new job last August, I didn’t take into consideration that my new job wouldn’t be nearly as flexible as my old job. I found myself barely getting in 3 miles on some weeks. I always got my long runs on the weekends but the adjustment period was much longer than expected.
  3. No more 4:30 am training runs: It was AMAZING to get the runs out of the way and on with my day. Except I was completely exhausted throughout the workday. I couldn’t function properly and really all I wanted to do was nap. Lunchtime and after work will have to suffice.
  4. Training alone: Last year 99% of my training was done alone. I likely didn’t push myself as hard as I could because I knew no one was around to see it. I plan on joining running groups as often as possible this year to get my miles (and get a little social too).
  5. Really watch my diet: Looking back I realized that I ate a LOT of crap when I could have been making much better/healthier choices. I didn’t realize that i’d be so friggin hungry all the time! I will be better prepared for my growing appetite.
  6. WATCH the scale: I thought I was home free because of my increased mileage and calorie burn. Meanwhile, the number on the scale was creeping up with reckless abandon—I conveniently ignored the obvious changes in my body with laser focus on simply crossing the finish line. Now that I know I CAN DO IT, I will be more than attentive to what is going on with my body and make proper adjustments.
  7. Strength Train: Last year because of my new work schedule and a ton of other things I was ONLY able to do training runs. So much so that I was plain sick of the treadmill and began to dread my long runs after a while. I throughly enjoy lifting weights and I will make sure to get at least ONE day in—even if that means one less running training day.
  8. Dress Properly: Buy a proper race day shirt, way ahead of time. Like now. (lol!) I liked my outfit last year (The Ronald McDonald Jersey, and my skinz) but I didn’t love it. My name was taped on, my jersey wasn’t quite long enough and the outfit really wasn’t …me. I have plans to be really cute this year since all the pressure is off!
  9. Not eat all the things that strangers hand me: At one point in the Bronx during mile 18 (?) I was so delirious that I started taking leftover halloween candy from really nice spectators. Except my tummy was NOT happy to receive candy at that stage of the game.
  10. Get New shoes: Not particularly for the race but at least a month before. The shoes I wore had been used way past the expiration date. It may or may not have had something to do with the immense foot pain.
  11. Enjoy the race, even the bad parts: Right when I finished I was pretty sure I would never run another race again. Taking the uber home with my family was the longest ride, ever. I cried climbing the stairs to the second floor, my husband showered me and I went to bed. No food, little glory.
  12. Enlist support: I was stunned by the friends and family that witnessed me crawling to the very end. I was extremely humbled to know that so many people were “with” me during one of the hardest moments of my life. I will need each and everyone of them again this year.
  13. Pose for pictures: I don’t care how much pain i’m in, I will pose for ALL THE PICTURES! I didn’t buy not one picture from last year because in every single photo I had the only struggle face on! I literally had pain etched into my face! It was so sad. I will fake it till I make it!
  14. Stick to the plan as much as possible: There were some points of the training plan that I didn’t hold on to like my first week of work—or when I went to Israel—or when I went to Blogalicious—it’s not like my life has gotten any less hectic I just plan to work a bit harder to get those miles in.
  15. Control the Adrenaline: Running through Brooklyn was really the happiest I have ever been in a race, my heart was happy—so many kids—so many smiling cheering faces, in my borough!! My adrenaline was so high I swear I didn’t feel my feet at one point. When I reached the bridge to get into queens I felt deflated. There is no doubt I’ll be super excited to be in Brooklyn but I think it is a matter of controlling the mental part of the race and realizing what I have ahead of me.

Becoming a marathoner changed me to my core. I did something that I never thought was possible. Heck, I even got a tattoo! I ran endless miles solo, I ran when I really didn’t want to. I ran through all the doubt, through all the pain and I did it! I can’t wait to do it all again.

Hill Workouts For Runners: Beat The Beast!

Head for the hills with these 6 hill workouts for runners to gain strength, speed and confidence in your running!

Hill workouts, some love them, most hate them but everyone agrees that it is absolutely necessary for runners. The only way to conquer and get better at races with hills is to practice, practice, practice!

Although I am a fairly experienced runner, I am still learning with every race how to attack those hills and still be alive when I get to the top. I still have clear visions of the tallest hill I ever conquered which was the hill at mile 7 of the Rock N Roll DC Half Marathon. It was HUGE *in my Trump voice*.

giphy (3)

I also had a hard time with the bridges and hills in the NYC Marathon, and since marathon training begins this week, I wan’t to make sure that I am ready to handle it! I have teamed up once again with my amazing runner blogger friends to share 6 different hill workouts that you can use during your training for upcoming races!

The first step is to find a hill in your neighborhood perhaps at a nearby park, or set your treadmill on a steep incline. I have a hill in my local park that is a total beast. From there practice running up and down, this will not only build strength in your legs but it will prepare you for what is to come during your races. Don’t be surprised, be prepared!

Here are the workouts, a great variety for when you want to switch things up!

Living in a house full of boys, I have to make sure that my snacks are always present and abundant. Both of my boys have entered the eat every 5 minutes stage and I simply cannot keep up! Usually there is no downtime between meals and I need to have good and healthy snacks on hand at all times because I’d rather be filling them up with the healthy stuff than the junk so often.

I was invited by the makers of GoGo Squeez to celebrate their new low fat yogurt GoGo Squeez Yogurtz! of course there are no preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, BPA free, Gluten free, Kosher certified, and nut free–but the BEST part is that they don’t need refrigeration! The pouches are filled, sealed, and heat treated, so that you can store at room temperature until opened.

gogo yogurtz

This is a total game changer.

We celebrated the new GoGo Squeez Yogurtz with a fun event on the west side of Manhattan. My mom was gracious enough to bring the kids to the city, so it was a super nice treat to take them to a “fun place” on a week night.

gogo yogurtz

There was a fun coloring station where you could design your own pouch for your GoGo Squeeze Yogurtz pouch. My eldest was all over it but meanwhile the little was running all over the place and even asked for his own plate of strawberries, which of course he got.

SAMSUNG CSC gogo squeez yogurtz-7765 gogo yogurtz gogo squeez yogurtz-7758

There was also a fun station where you could make your own yogurt, filled with fresh fruits so the kids could pair  the yogurt with whatever they wanted!

Ice Skating Rink

gogo squeez yogurtz-7769

The cool part about the event was that there was a man made ice skating rink for the kids to play on. Since the kids have never been ice skating before, I was a complete nervous nellie for them to even step foot into the rink. I was silently hyperventilating simply wondering what would happen to them out there. They had never even been on roller skates before and I am personally horrible at skating myself so to say I was scared to let them on the ice was an understatement.

gogo squeez yogurtz-7870

Alas, my husband convinced me that it would all be okay (he is very good at that). We strapped up the boys, I kept my fears to myself and watched them go. There was an amazing guide on the ice that was so patient with them and within 5 minutes they were on their own going from side to side–falling a couple times but having a blast the whole while.

gogo squeez yogurtz-7795 gogo squeez yogurtz-7853 gogo squeez yogurtz-7820 gogo squeez yogurtz-7808 gogo yogurtz

Showed me that I HAVE to let go of my own fears when it comes to my kids, at the very least I need to keep them under control and just let them be kids. They played on the ice and were so sad to leave, but they did participate in the dance party and got a bag full of goodies to take home with them!

Block Island Rhode Island is a Stunning Getaway From NYC

Block Island, Rhode Island is the perfect getaway from all the noise with 17 miles of beach and Victorian style accommodations, you will never want to leave!

I am constantly looking for beautiful getaways from NYC. I love my city but a quick getaway is such a beautiful refresher. I especially love a place that is a quick drive, or train ride away. I’ve visited all the states south of NYC on the east coast but can you believe that I have never gone north? When I got the invitation to visit Block Island, Rhode Island with other bloggers–I really couldn’t say yes fast enough because I had heard such amazing things about Rhode Island plus it was FINALLY my chance to go North!

After a beautiful, scenic, nearly 3 hour ride to Kingston on the Amtrak (which is really my happy place–insanely relaxing and PRODUCTIVE!). We took about a 20 minute drive to the Block Island Ferry and learned so many awesome things from our tour guide along the way.

Block Island Day Trip-7959

Did you know these things about Block Island?

  • Named “one of the twelve best unspoiled areas in the Western Hemisphere”
  • Has 17 miles of unspoiled beaches
  • Brilliantly restored Victorian Inns and B&Bs
  • Activities include bike riding, hiking, horseback riding, bird-watching and snorkeling
  • More than 50 specialty shops and more than a dozen art galleries

Arriving on Block Island

Block Island Day Trip-7964

The moment I stepped foot off the Amtrak and into Rhode Island, even the AIR was different. NYC can be a super intense place, and Rhode Island gave me a super relaxing vibe. We boarded the Block Island Ferry and it was beautiful to watch–that was until the boat sped up! It was SOO windy! I’m pretty sure my cheeks were rippling. :) But oh man was it worth it, as we arrived on the island, I knew that we were in a really special place.

We had lunch a few steps away from the ferry at a stunning restaurant/hotel called The National. The food was phenomenal–so good. I had a plain burger with pasta salad and most of my fellow bloggers had the famous lobster rolls. I couldn’t partake because of my seafood allergy, but it all got extremely rave reviews!

SouthEast Light House

Block Island Day Trip-8064

Next we headed quickly to the Southeast Light House. A 52 foot tall tower that serves as a guide to boats all over the east coast. The building was actually picked up and moved from it’s original location on the edge of the cliff to 300 hundred feet away in 1993. The entire building remained in tact, and it was the coolest thing ever to climb to the top and see the light in all its glory up close and personal.

Glass Float Project

Afterwards we toured more of the island and stopped on one of the most beautiful trails for the Glass Float Project:

550 Glass Floats (glass orbs about the size of a grapefruit) will be hidden on Block Island. Floats will be dated, numbered and stamped with the shape of Block Island. All floats are clear glass except for 16 (because it is 2016), which are special colored orbs. One super special float is made entirely out of gold leaf.

Block Island Day Trip-8124

We walked and walked and search but unfortunately none of us found one of these special orbs, but I think I definitely need to go back and take a closer look because the orbs are SO beautiful!

How Do You Get To Block Island Anyway?

Glad you asked, so you can take the Block Island ferry from Newport, Rhode Island, New London Connecticut, or even via the Montauk Ferry on Long Island!

Just off the coast of Rhode Island, this secret gem is a throwback to the mid-1800s: Antique-filled Victorian Inns, miles of pristine rolling hills, and towering cliffs with stunning views of the Atlantic. –TravelandLeisure.com

Overall thoughts of Block Island

Block Island Day Trip-8026 Block Island Day Trip-8046 Block Island Day Trip-8015 Block Island Day Trip-8004

Block Island is really a place that celebrates a life of relaxation, old school values and beautiful scenery. Most every hotel has a limited amount of rooms, I’m pretty sure I didn’t see a hotel over 2 floors. Every restaurant I saw had a beautiful view of the beach and so did every B&B. The island is also a great place to bike, swim and run too! Although, I went for a day trip the island really left a lasting impression on me. I would love to take my family here before the summer is out!

Happy Friday guys!!

Friday Fitness (1)

I am so excited for the weekend? How are you guys? It’s been forever since I’ve had a Friday update on life, eating and exercising.

It’s been a crazy stressful week of events hasn’t it? Social media is a scary place to hang out right now so make sure you are taking care of yourselves properly!

My week was a bit crazy, made some ginormous life decisions that will shock most, elate others and the rest won’t know quite how to handle it. Since the blog is super public and the LURK game is so strong around these parts, I’ll save the announcement for when it’s official. Just know that the decision has brought me a LOT of peace with something I’ve been struggling with incredibly lately and since we only have one life, I’m going to put my best food forward!

workoutroundup

Honestly I don’t have much of a recap for this week. I didn’t do much of anything–on purpose. My 20 week marathon training plan begins next week and I wanted to give myself a bit of a break before the miles start to pile up. I’m excited for marathon training even though it can be brutal. This year I’m doing a 20 week plan vs. a 16 week plan and I hope this will make a huge difference this year especially towards the end of the race when things fell all the way apart.

New York Road Runners Mini 10k Race Recap

Instagram Photo

This was my first time running this race! I registered for it last year but then I got an email inviting me to galavant in the Hamptons with Samsung Home so that was a total no brainer.

I actually traveled with two of my friends from high school to the race which was fun because girl talk.

NYRR Mini 10k Recap

We lined up for the start at the beginning of Columbus Circle. It was SO awesome seeing the beautiful sea of nearly 9000 women before me. The sight was breathtaking!!

NYRR Mini 10k

The race was great. Honestly. I couldn’t ask for more. I got hot it was in the mid sixties at the start. The sun was beaming hard in Central Park–my shoelaces came apart three times (wtf?! It’s like a world record. If anyone wants to teach me and my boys how to tie shoelaces, feel free). Plus–free race photos! WHAT?!

race_2991_photo_38017531 race_2991_photo_38015810 race_2991_photo_38001096

I crossed the finish averaging about a sexy 12:47 pace which I’m happy with. My 8th race of the year was pretty great and to top off a really cute medal there was flowers given to all the ladies which was a really nice touch.

upcomingraces

On Saturday I have the Queens 10k. This race was brutal last year with SO much humidity and a weird route that goes through cornfields and the like, I’m not quite looking forward to it–but I WILL complete it because it’s one of the races that guarantees entrance into the NYC Half next year.
