Well - what can i say? The Mets continue to be great at home and terrible on the road. I was lucky enough to be at the game last night with my daughter (who made me stay for all 11 innings). What a game! One of the more exciting games ive been at. And ive been to a few good ones. As we have already covered before I think we can all agree that thus far this year the Mets biggest problem has not been what we thought it would be - starting pitching. And thats a good thing. Quite a week in Metsland.
Lets start from the 20 inning game. If youre reading this then you probably know all the details and have read all the interesting stats and tidbits about the game so i wont list them here.
However here are some things to think about from that game.
1) Major league teams need to rethink about when/how to use/bring in their "closer"(more on this in a coming post). Heres my week one Hero/Goat - My hero for the week is Jeff Francoeur. Howard Johnson said in the offseason that hes going to have a big year and he certainly has started it out big. 538 OBP for the week 4 BB and 2 K - not bad. An honorable mention should go to the bullpen which has been great. I did not like what i saw. Here are some of my thoughts.
First the bad:
1) John Maine did not look good. His fastball was all over the place and the Marlins were hitting his off speed stuff. When he did hit with his fastball the Marlins teed off on it. (Boy, Hanley sure didnt make Citi Field look like a tough place to hit HR did he?)

The media certainly didnt make it easier. After Tony Bernazard ripped his shirt off and Adam Rubin didnt become the new GM of the Mets, the media had a field day. After all, it was convenient to blame Bernazard for everything. Now, just to be clear, far be it for me to defend him. I never liked him. So, I'm sitting in my office this afternoon jumping from one conference call to another when my cell phone vibrates. In a very somber voice my friend says to me "did you hear the news"? I knew right away, that the worst case scenario we had heard about Jose Reyes turned out to be wrong...it was going to be even worse. There's no way he'll miss opening day, they said. One of the reasons given was that he likes the idea of having three switch hitters bunched together in the lineup.
Well i have a better idea.
