The Cinematic Orchestra were scheduled to play the Guggenheim Museum in NYC tonight, Friday, September 3rd, BUT: "Due to unforeseen medical reasons, The Cinematic Orchestra show has been canceled. The band express their deepest regret over the situation and hope to perform in New York in the new year." Hopefully those medical reasons aren't too serious and we do in fact see them in 2011.

Meanwhile, Ninja Tune is celebrating 20 years, and in addition to the box set, that means parties. Tickets are on sale now for an October 28th show at Santos Party House with sets by Amon Tobin, Kid Koala, DJ Food & DK, Poirier Toddla T & Serocee, DJ Kentaro, and Eskmo.

Two days later, almost the same lineup plays Echo/Echoplex in LA, though they also get Cut Chemist

Wormrot cancel some dates & add some others (playing Sunday instead of tonight & in October @ Acheron too)

Wormrot have been forced to delay the start of their tour due to visa issues. That means they won't be appearing at Santos Party House tonight (9/2), though all the other bands on the bill still will. To make up for it, Wormrot have rescheduled their NYC show to this SUNDAY (9/5) at Bowery Electric at 11PM. From there they move to Cleveland and tour as planned, though now we can also announce one more show that was being kept a secret up until now: BrooklynVegan & 1000 Knives are proud to present Wormrot with Mutant Supremacy, Defeatist, Psychic Limb, and Curandera at the Acheron on 10/3!

Wormrot's Abuse was one of my favorite LP's of 2009. Updated tour dates and a video of Wormrot in action is below...

Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips/Moon Duo (more by Abby Braden)

Wooden Shjips will be at ATP NY this weekend (hand-picked by Jim Jarmusch). That's followed by a show at MHOW on 9/6 (tickets) and then more dates north and west as far as Chicago, but then Ripley Johnson of the psychedelic left coast crew will start heading back east for a different string of dates with his other project, Moon Duo. The band will team up with Crystal Stilts and Messages (mems of Psychic Ills) for a show on 9/17 at Knitting Factory. Tickets are on sale.

Crystal Stilts recently played Bowery with Dean Wareham but have otherwise laid relatively low. Members of the band recently completed a new collaborative LP with David Feck of the UK's Comet Gain under the moniker Cinema Red & Blue. You may remember they played here back in September...

"Cinema Red and Blue is a Comet Gain side project featuring frontman David Feck, as well as that band's Anne Laure and Hoffner Burns. They're actually in town to record their album at Gary Olson's Marlborough Studios in Brooklyn and decided to play a show while here. I ran into Feck at a show on Monday and he told me that the album is about half covers and to expect the same from the live show. He rattled off a bunch of the songs they're covering but the only one I remember now is a Julian Cope song from his 1989 album Skellington. The band will be augmented live by former Comet Gain / current Soft City member Phil Sutton, plus JB, Andy and Kyle from Crystal Stilts. I have to imagine Gary Olson will contribute trumpet to at least one song. This should be fun." [Bill]

That self-titled LP is due 9/28 via What's Your Rupture, and features the Vic Godard cover "Same Mistakes" which can download above. Finest Kiss adds that, "the makeshift band also employs the services of Amy Linton, Hamish Kilgour and [as Bill predicted] Gary Olson."

Wooden Shjips released Vol 2 earlier this year, a compilation of rare singles available via Holy Mountain. Moon Duo was recently featured on the Woodist comp Welcome Home / Diggin' The Universe.

Messages (the band featuring members of Psychic Ills) also have another show in the near future, supporting Excepter and Up Died Sound on 10/27 at Coco66.

The Intelligence releasing new LP & touring (A Frames too) - a Todd P Halloween show & other tour dates

One of Seattle's finest, The Intelligence, have a new record and are gearing up for a big fall tour, including an October 30 stop at Cake Shop and will also play the Todd P Halloween Show somewhere in Brooklyn, details TBA. The band were last here about a year ago supporting one of 2009's best albums, Fake Surfers.

Its follow-up, Males, is the band's sixth album (third for In the Red) but marks a couple of firsts for the band. It's the first Intelligence album that wasn't played entirely by main brain Lars Finberg and marks a bold leap into fidelity. Scraping off the scuzz hasn't removed any of the band's weird charm -- Males is quite possibly their best album yet. (And Fake Surfers was hard to top.) Finberg discusses these new developments in the Intelligence's sound in a very entertaining interview over at The Finest Kiss:

Each new Intelligence record seems to sound a little more 'produced'... and you seem to have become more collaborative if not with the rest of the band at least with the producer. With Males you've even let the rest of the band into the studio. Are you weakening in your old age, or just more open to collaboration?

I'm weakening, I'm lonely. It's more fun to make something with everybody else now, it's new. My ears are just tired of the 'LO-FI' sound for us, I'm also sick to death of being called that, it's stupid but nothing gets called mid-fi or hi-fi, such a tired and petty complaint I know. I thought the most interesting thing we could do would be to try to make a big clean record. But really it's just the most interesting path to go down for me, we can record on dirty blank cassette tapes forever, it's easy but the challenge of having real bright vocals up front was scary and fun. Also our bass sound is cool with Susanna I wanted the record to have a lot of low end. Beren is a great drummer and we wanted a record with US as a band playing, since the 3 of us have been together a long time now it's just more fun to have something we make as a group. Plus if it sucks it's THEIR FAULT TOO.

Hi-fi or lo-fi, you seem torn between them (ie. Surfers vs Pacman). What is your preference and has it changed over the years?

It's Hi-Fi for now, I want our records to sound good with the windows down! I want it to sound good on a P.A. in a club and DJ's to be able to play it next to Adam Ant and the Buzzcocks without people involuntarily grinding their molars.

If the new album isn't enough Lars Finberg for you, he's got a side project, Puberty, you might want to investigate.

Meanwhile, Finberg's old band, the under-appreciated early-'00s A Frames, have come out of retirement -- albeit without him. (He left the drum stool in 2006.) Earlier this year saw the release of 333, an odds-n-sods triple platter of 7" sides and demos and with it came some new shows.

A Frames are making it to the East Coast in October, playing Cake Shop on 10/8 and Death by Audio on 10/9. They also play Philly on 10/7 at the Danger Danger Gallery. Video from a recent show in Seattle is at the bottom of this post

Oneohtrix Point Never, Arp & James Ferraro played Coco66 (pics, MP3s & more dates)

Oneohtrix Point Never @ Coco66

There were several peculiar sights at the Oneohtrix Point Never performance on Friday night, but none more so than the handful of fans clustered near the front of the stage, nodding their heads rhythmically.

To what, exactly? Oneohtrix Point Never - a k a the ambient-noise musician Daniel Lopatin - generally forgoes percussion altogether, instead creating beautiful, glistening caverns of space that shift in sneaky, oceanic fashion. At once they're vast and also slippery. But something as pedestrian as a beat? Never that.

For this show, the back room at Coco 66, near the waterfront in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, was almost completely dark, punctured only by columnar white lights rotating on either side of Mr. Lopatin and by red and green pinpoint lasers, which strafed his face and the heads of those near the front of the room. There was smoke, too, or if there wasn't, there probably should have been. Everything was a haze. -[New York Times]

Oneohtrix Point Never headlined the show, presented by Last Friday and Visitation Rites, with Arp, James Ferraro, and Future Shuttle on 8/27. One half of duo Blondes (one of Stereogum's "Best New Bands") was responsible for DJing. The next show for Oneohtrix Point Never is Friday in San Francisco. Shortly after, the electronic/ambient artist will ship out to Latvia (!) before skipping across Europe.

And though Oneohtrix was headlining, it was Arp's record release show. The Soft Wave is out September 7th on Smalltown Supersound. Both free MP3s above are from that album. Full tracklisting below.

"You ready for some Grateful Dead action after this?" asked singer Julian Casablancas early in the Stokes set, referring to Furthur, the band led by the Dead's Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, already in progress at the eastern edge of the polo field. The uncertain response suggested fans were staying put - just as others were for Furthur. The Strokes sounded exceptionally muscular in the park's expansive setting. Fabrizio Moretti contributed heavy beats to "Vision of Division" and "Reptilia," as Casablancas eased his vocals from deadpan to excited and back again. "This is It" slowly built to a sing-along as Albert Hammond Jr. and Nick Valensi created an intricate overlap of guitars. "I remember playing these songs in front of four people," Casablancas said, looking out on the tens of thousands of fans. "It's really surreal." Even, apparently, after all the year's of the band's success. -[Rolling Stone]

The Strokes and Furthur were two of many participants (including Bassnectar and My Morning Jacket and Al Green) at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco on August 14th & 15th. In addition to sets from Gogol Bordello, Social Distortion, Phoenix, Kings of Leon, and many more (photo sets of all those bands are below), Outside Lands also featured an appearance from "one of the day's best acts" Chromeo ...

"...At about 5:50 PM, one of the day's best acts appeared at the Outside Lands Festival.

The music was thumping, adrenaline pumping, the sun shining, and many in the crowd -- tapping into a singular energy -- could hold back no longer. They put their inhibitions aside and let themselves be drawn to the beats blasting from the Twin Peaks Stage. Some ran, jumped and moved like they never had before, heading toward a common purpose.

Of course, I'm referring to the bum rush of fans that managed to scramble past the guards and bust down part of the fence along John F. Kennedy Drive, allowing scores of people to hustle in before the riot control guards on horsies and the rent-a-guard dudes in orange t-shirts could stop the inflow." - [San Francisco Chronicle]

Al Green played Outside Lands (pics & video) - NYC tonight, other dates

"...if you were to take a poll of what was the No. 1 fan-favorite set of the 2010 Outside Lands festival, my guess is that the Reverend Al Green would come out on top - by a large margin. The 64-year-old gospel/soul/R&B star was in legendary vocal form as he led his band, featuring a dynamite horn section, through such immortal tracks as "Tired of Being Alone," "Let's Stay Together" and "Love and Happiness," which, on Sunday, sounded pretty much like the greatest tune of all time...." As previously mentioned, Al Green will bless BB King's in NYC TONIGHT (9/2). Tickets are still on sale (which is not surprising given how expensive they are). The NYC show is one of three Al will play before the weekend is over. You can also catch the legend in Atlantic City on Saturday and in Charlottesville, VA on Sunday. Bassnectar played Outside Lands (pics), ELECTRIC ZOO FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND (win tix) & other tour dates

"Though he was handed a somewhat awkward time slot (between 4 and 5 p.m.), the first day of Outside Lands did not start until Lorin Ashton of Bassnectar said so. A San Franciscan by birth, Ashton's all-encompassing formula of serrated dubstep has won the hearts and minds of local natives since he began experimenting with sub-bass frequencies and supermassive sampling in early 2000. The result is a form of music that you can quite literally feel when you experience it live -- that is, until the sound cuts out, as it inexplicably did 20 minutes into Ashton's Saturday evening set. The ensuing half hour was filled with frantic roadies rushing around on stage, starry-eyed candy kids fretting in the crowd, and a lot of people being unhappily reminded of this festival's notorious penchant for suddenly killing their performers' sound. At one point, Ashton came out with a megaphone and actually pleaded with the crowd, attempting to explain over the din of a dazed, music-less multitude that the power to the entire stage had died, and that there was nothing he could do but wait. Surprisingly, the vast majority of people devotedly hung around until the power was restored, and, even more surprisingly, Ashton recovered from such egregious circumstances with a killer comeback that featured his flagship remixes of Beastie Boys' "So What'cha Want," Massive Attack's "Inertia Creeps," and Metallica's "Seek & Destroy" -- though notably missing was his rework of "Where is My Mind."" Bassnectar is one of 70+ performers scheduled to play Electric Zoo on Randall's Island in NYC this weekend. It's his only current NYC date (tour dates are listed below). The electronic artist was on hand earlier this month when he played (with some difficulty as it points out above) the Outside Lands Festival in his native San Francisco. Pictures from that show are in this post.

If you head to Electric Zoo this weekend expecting Japanese dudes with double-necked guitars, you will be disappointed. That said, Electric Zoo will feature tons of artists of the electronic and DJ persuasion including Bassnectar, headliner The Chemical Brothers, Major Lazer, Diplo solo, Erol Alkan, Pretty Lights, Flying Lotus, Moby, Armin Van Buuren, A-Trak, the OTHER Boris and oodles of other crews bound to get you moving.

The four-stage festival goes down on SATURDAY & SUNDAY (9/4, 9/5 - set times are posted) at Randall's Island with after-parties later that night that you'll probably want to avoid. Tickets are still available OR you can try your luck at winning a pair!

Started by Kid Millions and Bobby Matador of Oneida, People of the North is an ongoing but sporadic outgrowth of that restlessly experimental Brooklyn assemblage. Since the first tour in early 2003, POTn has served as another language emanating from the screaming mouth of the O. It has always included Kid and Bobby, and usually other members of Oneida as well. The entirety of Oneida has performed together under the POTn label at venues including the Frying Pan and the Mercury Lounge.

People of the North has provided compositions that have worked their way into Oneida's most cherished repertoire, including "Up with People" (from Happy New Year) and "Lavender" (from The Wedding).

While there are no clearly defined boundaries separating POTn from Oneida, it might be fair to say that the music tends to be more staunchly devoted to minimalism, repetition, improvisation, and sternness than the wide-ranging efforts of the big brother band.

Deep Tissue was recorded at the Ocropolis in early 2009, with the participation of much of the O. The sessions were deep, and the skies were gray." [Jagjaguwar]

People of the North's Deep Tissue was released by Jagjaguwar in April. There are four songs on the album. You can download one for free above.

Catch People of the North live Friday night at Bowery Ballroom where they'll be opening for Portishead side-project BEAK>. Tickets are still on sale. It's BEAK>'s only NYC appearance, and one of only four they're playing in the U.S. Another one is Saturday at ATP upstate. The other two are in California (and they're all listed below).

Not leaving town this weekend and can't make it to ATP? Todd P and friends present another reason to not feel so bad, and Oneida (who were a big part of ATP NY in 2009), are involved in that too. Oneida will headline a 17+ band lineup (that also includes Oneida side-project Man Forever) at Monster Island on Saturday. The "Monster Island Block Party" kicks off at 2pm and is free. Those Darlins add Brooklyn show w/ Strange Boys, releasing 7" split w/ Darlins side-project Funstix (updated dates)

1/2 of Those Darlins have a side-project they call Funstix and Funstix make up 1/2 of the songs on the new Those Darlins 7", "Nightjogger" ("First new song from Those Darlins since their debut that previews their forthcoming sophomore release."). Order it now. It's in stores on 9/14... which is two days before Those Darlins play Bowery Ballroom in NYC as part of their tour with The Strange Boys & Gentleman Jesse... which was just expanded to include a show at Brooklyn Bowl on September 18th. $5.00 tickets are on sale now for the new Brooklyn show. Alternatively, you can still pick up tickets for the Bowery show which will set you back $13 before charges.

In related news, Those Darlins relative Deer Tick recently expanded a tour with a new Brooklyn date as well, and that is now on sale.

Field Music returning (dates), Rock Yard continuing (Saturday)

Sunderland, UK's Field Music are bringing their pastoral prog back to the States for a short Fall tour, including a September 23 stop at Littlefield. They were last here in February, just before the release of their third album, Field Music (Measure), which is a shoo-in for my personal Best of 2010 list. A hodgepodge of recognizable (if mostly British) influences -- from Fleetwood Mac to '80s-era Yes to Fairport Convention -- all filtered through the the Brewis brothers' distinct style, the double-LP is a real tour de force.

The Brewises bring it live, too, as anyone who has seen Field Music play live can attest. Extremely skilled musicians, the brothers take turns on drums whenever the other is singing. (David is especially fearsome behind the kit.) The other two members of the band are no slouches either. This is likely to be Field Music's last U.S. tour till the Brewises make another record.

Opening at the Littlefield show are Motel Motel who most recently played the Jelly Rock Yard with Zaza. Speaking of the Rock Yard, you have two more chances to experience it this summer including this Saturday, 9/4, with Bun B, Big Krit, Curren$y and more

Unsurprisingly, the highlight of the set came when B-Roc dropped his group's new single "Make It Better." The song is so dope, so summery, so perfect. NYC's The Knocks are listing "NYU w/ Mystery Guests (dj set)" happening on September 7th on their tour dates. That would be the annual NYU Mystery Concert which I accidentally revealed will also include a set by certain member of Outkast on the bill.

The Knocks then have a few other scattered dates scheduled before CMJ, and then at least three scheduled during CMJ including the just-announced late show happening at Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday, October 20th with DFA's Holy Ghost. Tickets for that show will go on sale Wednesday, 9/8, at noon (or you can try to get in with your CMJ badge).

If you can't wait that long to see Holy Ghost!, don't forget that they also happen to appear on the lineup of this weekend's final 'Warm Up' of 2010 at PS1:

Axl Rose starts show late, ends early in Dublin (video)

"The crowd are not amused as the band do not appear on stage until approx 10:25pm. No interaction or apology by Axl to the crowd who are booing etc.. Bottles are thrown on stage during the start of Welcome To The Jungle. Axl tells the crowd to stop throwing bottles at him or they'll leave. The show goes on for another couple of songs before more bottles are thrown at Axl & he just up's & leaves. The Promoters / Venue staff make announecements to the crowd about trying to fix technical difficulties at first (yeah right!) & then tell people they're working to get the band back & ask the crowd to stop throwing things at Axl. The crowd were told another annoucment would be forthcoming but after 10-15 mins, the house lights just came on & crowds started to leave after O2 staff were telling the crowd it was over & to contact MCD for a refund... I was one fo the crowd who had waited for ages & after been told it was over & the band were not coming back on & to seek my refund from MCD, I heard the band came back on at approx 11:30pm but we weren't allowed back into the venue." Bambi Kino is a Beatles cover band featuring Doug Gillard (Guided By Voices, etc), Erik Paparazzi (who has played with Cat Power and others), Ira Elliot of Nada Surf, and Mark Rozzo of Maplewood. They recently played four consecutive shows in Hamburg, Germany beginning on August 17, performing the exact sets The Beatles performed in Hamburg exactly 50 years ago. Tonight they play Bowery Electric in NYC.
