We live in dangerous times, and the security of our family and ourselves comes down to individual responsibility. A responsibility we know isn’t taken lightly by those of you who carry concealed. Here at the Brown Safe Research Labs we’ve tested and retested many sub-compacts and micro compact pistols to identify the one that best fits with our approach to self-defense and our overall philosophies regarding a personal defense weapon. It’s imperative that the tools we stake our lives on fit certain criteria; not the least of which are effectiveness, accuracy, reliability, and comfortable concealabilty. After a lot of examination we’ve found the Kahr P380, fulfills all the needs to meet our core principles.

The Kahr P380 surpasses its competition simply because it hits on the key components necessary for a pocket carry pistol: it’s extremely reliable, very concealable, and highly effective. Don’t let the size of this little beast fool you, it packs some serious punch, and the ability of this particular micro compact to fire +P rounds puts it in the same arena as a 9MM sidearm. Even still, and possibly best yet, the Kahr P380 is a surprisingly fun gun to shoot. And let’s face it, if you don’t actually enjoy shooting the gun you are relying on to save lives, then you’re really not likely to adequately practice with it. Reality check Annie Oakley, practice is requisite to making sure you’re are in top form when called upon in do or die scenarios. So having a carry gun like the Kahr P380 that is made to see serious use makes all the difference in self-defense.

Much like its older brother, the Kahr PM9, the P380 is bound in black polymer and stainless steel. As is with most of Kahr’s firearms, the construction of the P380 is considered one of its strongest traits. Attention to detail is top-notch, one very cool feature unique to Kahr construction is the addition of steel inserts molded directly into the polymer. These ensure the action on this weapon is both smooth and durable, and holds up much better to excessive use and heat in comparison to other subcompact pistols, such as the Ruger LCP. And although the Kahr is very lightweight compared to an all steel pistol, its clever design results in much less felt recoil, making the Kahr P380 the most fun of all the subcompact and micro-compacts we’ve tested.

Setting itself apart from the competition again is the P380′s sight system. Considered to be much closer to a full-sized pistol’s system, the Kahr P380 provides steel, dovetail mounted front and rear sights that are both durable in construction (to ease the fear of damage in a holster or pocket) and providing a broader range of sight. Did we also mention the sights are horizontally adjustable? This simple addition wrecks much of the competition, as many pocket pistols don’t even have sights, let alone adjustable dovetail.

Ok, ok, I know what you’re thinking. “ooooh fancy sights! Yeah, that’s real great if it’s a full length barrel, but we’re talkin’ sub 3” pal.” And my response is: First, I don’t appreciate your tone. And secondly, If you’re wondering what those sights are going to be assisting you fire, the answer is a premium, Lothar Walther, match-grade barrel that far exceeds the barrels that are installed on most subcompacts. Which I know sounds crazy, but is actually pretty dang accurate. Check out these images of the grouping we got our first time out with the Kahr P380. Again, just another addition that’ll give you a bit more peace-of-mind when you have to make split decisions that your life may rely upon.

With our first grouping, we already saw amazing accuracy. With 5 inch groupings (from 10 yards away), we were sure we’d struck gold with the P380. The results from our first magazine were comparable to many .45 caliber and 9MM sidearms we’ve tested.

We captured the first firing of the minuscule mighty P380 on video. Not bad for a virgin christening.

We found that using a single stiff arm technique, where the dominant arm is locked out, gave us a longer sight plane and greatly reduced muzzle flip to a very manageable level even with the +P rounds, resulting in rapid follow up shots with better than average accuracy. Combining the straight arm technique and practice along with the addition of the Crimson Trace Laser Sight for the P380 our final grouping ended up being within 3 inches, which far-exceeded our expectations. Check out this video of us shooting the Kahr P380 using the straight arm technique. Note the minimal muzzle rise.

Looking closely at the above video, you may notice the Crimson Trace laser is functioning intermittently. Sure, a bit troubling to us at first, but having worked with Crimson Trace customer support before and having found them to be more than responsive (on one occasion even able to talk to a real live person at 12am) we weren’t too concerned. Just as we thought, one quick call to Crimson Trace and the rep told us they were not only aware (and apologetic) for the issue, but they had a solution for us right away. It was simply a bad batch of batteries, and the laser now functions flawlessly. Gotta love companies that actually stand behind their products!

Kahr’s attention to detail with the P380 is astounding. Whether you look to the fact that they incorporated a locked breech/tilted barrel system or an external slidestop lever, it’s apparent that Kahr designed the P380 with the intention of bringing all the basic features of a larger-caliber pistol to the P380, sans size.

Another benefit of the Kahr’s construction is simply how much more solid it is in comparison to other subcompacts. The guide rod, magazine, slide, trigger, extractor, and firing pin – all of which have a tendency to feel pretty marginal on most small everyday carry pistols – are much larger on the P380. This only boosts the Kahr’s durability and strength as the premier pocket carry pistol.

Here’s a video that gives you a good gauge on the muzzle rise of Kahr’s competition. And although we didn’t’ didn’t shoot this particular video, we did shoot the majority of the compact pistols featured here, and it does give a good idea of the other 380s in the carry category.

The Kahr P380 is built to be the gun that can sit in a drawer or your holster for years without being shot, but be ready for that critical life-or-death moment. That’s the type of reliability you want in your home, defending your family, and that’s the type of reliability you want on your hip. Well played, Kahr.

Safety is another area that the Kahr P380 has nailed, especially for the everyday carry pocket pistol. It’s double action only, requiring a further pull of the trigger for each shot, which we also like from an accuracy standpoint because the length of pull is always the same. It also has last-round hold-open feature, an internal safety, and if you purchase the California version, a chambered bullet indicator. All ideal features for those who plan on having this gun with them at all times.

Much analysis has been done regarding ammunition for the P380, but no guide for .380 ammunition (with the P380) is more extensive than the following guide, published by “Bruce F.”, a self-proclaimed “mousegun addict”. Here are his findings for the Kahr P380.

After testing here’s what we at the Brown Safe Research Labs had narrowed down to our favorite ammunition Loads:

For Maximum Firepower: Buffalo Bore 95 Grain FMJ +P. This stout round is by far and away our preference numero uno due to the potent punch it provides. Plus you just can’t beat a concealable carry pistol that accommodates a full 8 rounds of ammo that rivals the power of a 9mm.

For Maximum Reliability: Hornady 90 Grain Critical Defense FTX HP. A solid round that the P380 loves to eat for lunch but whose ballistics just don’t pack the oomph of the +P.

For Target Firing: Federal American Eagle 95 Grain FMJ. This is some good stuff that works just fine, feeds reliably, and won’t break the bank while you’re honing your skills down at the range.

While all subcompacts require a break-in period, due to the smaller size and proximity of certain parts to each other. Kahr is the only company to actually give you the gracious heads-up, and let you know that it’ll take upwards of 200 rounds to get your Kahr P380 reliable. And although this may sound like a fairly high number to some, we love the fact that this gun is meant to be shot, and shot A LOT, rather than the showpiece you’re hoping will work when you finally have the need to pull it out.

It is worth noting that while the P380 boasts the exclusive ability to fire +P rounds, it has a strong distaste for flat-nosed .380 ammunition. Luckily, the Kahr P380 has hardly any issues cycling Hornady’s or Buffalo Bore’s. Just a piece of advice if you rely solely on flat-nosed Wal-Mart ammunition.

No firearm is complete without some handy, sleek accessories. Making a great weapon even greater, we attached the praised Crimson Trace Laserguard to our P380. Since the late 1990s, Crimson Trace has been developing custom lasers for a variety of different weapons, including the Kahr P380. This specific laser’s design is both sleek and reliable, providing you with extra target visibility, especially in low-light situations. Did we forget to mention that Crimson Trace has 24/7 customer service?

If you’d like added visibility, or are not as comfortable with a gun-mounted laser, then Kahr offers a few different options for illuminated sights, but we recommend the Trijicon Bright & Tough for both the original P380 and the California-legal CLI version. Make sure that you purchase the sights made specifically for the California version, if that’s the one you have. They can be found here. Sights can be switched out by your local, trusted gunsmith, or by Kahr themselves.

Every round counts in the world of self-defense, and that’s why Kahr manufactures additional 7-round magazines to go with your P380. These magazines are also great for those who have issues with the handling of subcompact pistols, as they provide additional space for grip.

For everyday carry of your P380, we have a few suggestions. For concealed carry, the Talon in-the-waistband works well for men, as it provides comfort and security, while also making the firearm less visible to those around. For women, UCC Holsters distributes “The Flashbang”, which is a firearm-molded bra-mounted holster that is great for quick draw and ultra-concealment. Another great gift option for your wife might be this hot-pink Cobra in-the-waistband holster. Perhaps to go with her new pink Kahr P380?

At Brown Safe, we are in love with quality, kick-butt products, and because of that, we love the Kahr P380. Proudly made here in the United States, Kahr has taken pride in crafting unique and reliable firearms for years, which is one of the reasons so many law enforcement officials use Kahr firearms to save lives every day.

To supplement the amazing craftsmanship of every Kahr (including our awesome P380) comes human customer service. While doing research on the P380, we found that Kahr was not only helpful, but gracious. Many times, we saw individuals who received free magazines and replacement parts after repairs on their firearms took longer than expected, and because of that, we can only thank Kahr for being on the ball and loyal to its customers.

If you’re looking for the perfect pocket pistol, home defense pistol, or just a fun shooter, then I’m not sure what you’re waiting for, because I think you just made your decision.

Disassembly

And for those who love being able to know your gun inside and out, the Kahr was built with simplicity in mind, and offers the ability to be broken down with no tools necessary. Below is a brief breakdown on how to break down the Kahr P380, plain and simply.

Always perform a safety check. Remove magazine, verify it is empty, then check the chamber.

Push the barrel back with the palm of your hand, aligning the notch in the slide with the notch in the chassis.

While keeping the notches aligned, push the back of the slide stop pin, pushing it outwards from the other side. It takes a bit of elbow grease, but you’re welcome to use some sort of plastic wedge or flathead screwdriver to remove it if you’d like.

Once removed, set the slide stop to the side. Then, hold the trigger down, and pull the slide forward. It should simply slide out and off the chassis.

A few of our recent projects here at the Brown Safe Research Labs have included the integration of lasers for a variety of….shall we say….unconventional uses. Our involvement in this often unexplored technological “multi-tool” of sorts has prompted us to explore a few additional uses that could apply to many different fields.

Once relegated to the sphere of sci-fi fanatics, lasers are now becoming more and more commonly deployed by field operatives for a number of special purposes, unique to their profession. The systems in use are normally built using military grade parts and procedures, and as such, can be sometimes difficult to transport and deliver to remote destinations without drawing unwanted attention. It’s for this unique situation we thought to assemble this handy guide and provide examples of how a laser can become a specialty tool used to perform a variety of unique functions when combined with more readily available components. Each one of these outta-the-box uses center on one of the most powerful handheld lasers available, the Wicked Laser Arctic.

We chose Wicked Lasers due to their availability and their stellar base of supporters. Wicked Laser produces highly popular and powerful lasers that can often be acquired from even the remotest of locations across the globe. Yes, there are ruggedized lasers that can perform each function defined below optimally, but the point of our exercise was to determine just what type of creations could be produced using the proverbial toothpick, chewing gum, and a 1,250mW Laser.

So without further ado, here are the results of our labor.

Caution: A 1,250mW laser is EXTREMELY dangerous; none of the designs below should be attempted by anyone other than trained professionals who fully understand the inherent dangers. The below information is purely informational. If you’re pondering whether you may be a trained professional, you’re not. Do not attempt to build any of these tools.

1. Private Point to Point Communication

The setup shown here is good for communication at relatively short distances out to 2 miles. For longer ranges, a sighted and calibrated telescope would be better suited and can be good out to a range of 6,856 meters, possibly more. Although, it’s absolutely imperative to note that attempting to use this setup at distances less than one mile can risk damaging the eyes so should never be attempted.

The shroud shown above reduces visible side scatter. And if both corresponders are equipped with NV specs, converting the laser to infrared is a major jump in your private party line. Check out this tip off link on how to convert a laser to infrared.

2. Low or No-Light Shooting

The Arctic by Wicked Laser includes an optional lens set that greatly expands its possible uses. In this setup, we’ve employed the Wicked Laser flashlight lens to open up the beam, allowing the laser to function as a high power weapon light, providing proper low light identification of targets out to the 800 meter range limit of the weapon it is mated to; which in this case is our highly customized trusty Brown Safe M1A Socom II. On exceptionally cloudy dark nights, we estimate this designator to be effective out to 400 meters.

The use of lasers for nighttime shooting over flashlights is gaining widespread acceptance and is set to overtake the use of traditional lights within a few short years. The 50mW Laser Genetics ND-3 x50 is the current laser designator of choice by hunters and military alike.

But be warned, using a wicked laser in this fashion will greatly reduce the unit’s lifespan as they are not built to withstand recoil abuse.

3. Target Identification

This is another configuration that benefits from the optional lens set. “X” marks the spot. The Crosshair lens paints a nice identifier on any unlucky target out to 200 meters, allowing for rapid identification by friendly forces. The default lens is best for target ID past 200 meters.

Throw in the IR mod and you’ll ensure an unsuspecting target remains unsuspecting. When properly sighted, the tactical scope allows the operator to precisely target without the need for NV gear.

4. Action Photography

For those combat and action photographers, a high power laser can prove highly beneficial when attempting to film or photograph less than cooperative subjects. The configuration shown allows for run and gun style shooting from the shoulder or the hip, even during broad daylight. Simply point in the subject’s general direction, align the red dot over the subject, and squeeze the shutter button. Great for around-the-corner shots as well. A word of warning, though: Best to avoid snapping off any sentimental shots of those on your own team as they may shoot back, with their remaining good eye.

Note: the Geneva Convention frowns upon the intentional use of lasers for blinding on the battlefield.

5. Neutralizing a Surveillance Camera

For those operators in need of a more subtle approach than the more conventional “whack attack” or “shoot it” mindset when it comes to deactivating surveillance cameras. A standard laser, like the one shown here, provides the ability to temporarily impair a surveillance camera in complete silence. A 1,2500mW laser can permanently disable a camera, even from a good distance.

As it turns out, our IT dept. wasn’t too keen on the idea of us taking out our own surveillance cameras for the sake of showing that it could be done. Apparently they’re pretty positive the 1,2500 milliwatts coursing through the Wicked Laser Arctic would do more than enough damage; so we opted to produce the above image example using a camera friendlier 5mW weapon laser.

6. Emergency Beacon

While an IR beacon can prove useful for nighttime recoveries, signaling your location to an approaching winged escort in daylight can prove trying. And the old flash-a-mirror-trick is a little less reliable than the movies lead you to believe. Instead, use two fingers to sight in your target, and with the aircraft positioned between your fingers move the laser back and forth to catch their attention.

Using the Wicked Laser’s optional line lens converts the laser beam into a broad line, perfect for long distance signaling to friendlies for those planned or sometimes unplanned rapid extractions.

7. Tripwire Detection

Defang the feared tripwire with yet again a simple mod to the Wicked Laser. Simply affix the line lens to this all-in-one device and never fall victim to booby traps or triggers again. A simple horizontal swipe with the vertically aligned laser line and any ill-bent filament will shimmer to your attention. Good in both dark and daylight situations.

8, 9, 10…..To Be Continued

Well, we seem to have run out of time on this alluring topic as more pressing work is vying for our attentions. We were hoping to explore and arrive at 3 additional laser uses for this segment; perhaps we’ll have the opportunity to revisit it later to flush out the whole ten. Until then we leave you with these parting ideas: Self Defense, Remote Detonation, and Emergency Wound Cauterization……..mmmmm, tasty!

For those whose lives and the lives of those they serve depend on the tools they carry, speed and dependability can make all the difference in the world. Enter the automatic knife, or switchblades as they are commonly known, a knife that contains an internal mechanism operated by an actuating button to deploy the knife’s blade. The legality of owning and carrying these types of knives vary from state to state, but switchblades and automatic knives are very serious tools and as such are normally reserved for military and Law Enforcement professionals only. After reading our post on the Top 10 Tactical Tomahawks many of our friends in the L/E, security, and military sectors requested we do a similar breakdown for switchblades. We’ve heard their call and thus tried to deliver dependable info they can rely on. So, in no particular order here is our list of the Top 10 Automatic Knives:

1. Gerber DMF Automatic Knife

The DMF model, which is an acronym for Dual Multi Function, comes from the military line of Gerber tools. The “dual” in Dual Multi Function is all about the ambidextrous ability of this automatic knife. The blade’s deployment button is accessible on both sides of the Gerber DMF auto so that it can be used equally well in either hand you find the need to use. And by locating the safety switch on the spine of the handle, it further accommodates lefties and righties. This particular DMF model sports a solid tanto shape with partially serrated blade made of S30V steel. S30V is a hardened stainless steel that offers quality corrosion resistance and although some manufactures have had some difficulties in gaining a consistent heat-treat, this Gerber should exhibit better than average sharpness and toughness. The nicely shaped handle is made of G10 which offers a nice robust feel while benefiting from low weight. The end of the knife handle has a wide hole for mounting paracord or lanyard and the pommel comes to a blunt point to aid the user in smashing through whatever is in their way.

Blade Shape: Tanto (half Serrated)

Blade Material: CPM S30V Steel

Blade Length: 3.50″

Open Length: 7.35″

Closed Length: 4.45″

Weight: 6.70 OZ

Handle Material: G10

2. Spyderco Embassy Automatic Knife

This stylish switchblade by Spyderco looks good and feels even better. Spyderco bills it as the ambassador of their automatic knife lineup, and for good reason. As a very affordable option, the Embassy Auto has a nicely finished aluminum handle with a wicked Wharncliffe shaped blade in CPM S30V steel. The release button is recessed in the handle so that the blade won’t accidentally be deployed, when set down on a hard surface for example, and features a secondary lock button as a further safety measure. Although this automatic knife is set up primarily for right handers, the three position pocket clip can be easily swapped for tip up or tip down carry for either right or left handers.

Blade Shape: Wharncliffe (Flat saber-ground)

Blade Material: CPM S30V Steel

Blade Length: 3.125″

Open Length: 7.375″

Closed Length: 4.281″

3. Masters Of Defense Harkins Triton

If you’ve seen James Bond: Quantum of Solace, you may recall a bad guy attacking 007 with a slick looking switchblade. That automatic knife was none other than the Harkins Triton by Masters of Defense. Jeff A. Harkins is a master knife builder and the designer of this beautiful Automatic OTF (Out The Front) knife. The masterpieces Mr. Harkins creates with his own two hands are extremely limited and will cost you a pretty penny, so this collaboration with MOD is a welcome opportunity to own one of the definitive tactical automatics on the market. The Triton is a double action OTF which means it fires the blade from the top of the handle by pressing a release switch forward, then retracts the blade back into the handle by moving the lever in the opposite directions. The combo edge 3.6” blade is made of 154CM stainless steel and coated in a black DLC finish to match the all black case.

This unique side opening automatic knife by Benchmade is the 8600 Auto Bedlam. This big bad boy features an aggressive upswept scimitar-like blade available in either plane or combo edge. The G10 handle has a very organic texture of raised ridges which slightly aids in grip and gives this switchblade one of its most distinguishing characteristics. The Bedlam auto knife features Benchmade’s Auto-AXIS lock, a fully ambidextrous design that positions a small bar that extends through a slot on both sides of the handle and deploys the blade when slid forward. Because the button runs through the handle it can be depressed from either side and gives more versatility for both left or right handed users, and a safety lock is located on the spine of the knife for added versatility and simple access for either hand also.

This double action Out The Front (OTF) tactical knife from Piranha is called the Excalibur. As mentioned above, double-action refers to the ability of the knife to deploy and retract the knife blade with a single hand; sliding the button that activates the release mechanism for this switchblade also retracts the blade once slid in the other direction. The aggressive shape of the double edged dagger with partial serrations on each side definitely lives up to the nasty namesake of the brand Piranha. The handle design is a cool coffin shape that is pretty common to OTF automatics in the Harkins style. Made from aircraft grade alloy, the handle is strong and light, and although it doesn’t’ feature a texture for positive grip reinforcement it does get style points for interesting finish options like the camo version shown above.

This purpose built little beast is the Zero Tolerance 610ST Automatic Knife. ZT (Zero Tolerance) as their name implies takes their role as knife manufactures very seriously, aiming to produce products of the highest caliber. This switchblade features a tanto style blade of 154CM stainless steel with with a black DLC coating and combo blade that is partially serrated. Aircraft grade aluminum handles features textured finish for excellent gripping surface and lend to the purpose-built look. The firing button is only one sided, but solid enough to operate with gloves on, and a slide safety is located just under the button for added convenience and security. Overall a very solid side-folding switchblade that feels great in the hand.

If you’re looking for a basic but reliable automatic knife on a budget, then the SOG TAC Automatic Knife may be just what the doctor ordered. It’s a big knife, but has a slim profile that makes it a suitable choice for everyday carry. And while the plain exterior may not be gaining you any envious stares, it has the ability to take a beating and get the job done. The straight edge drop point blade is made from AUS-8; which can be razor sharp when given a good edge, but results can very on how well it holds that edge. If your’e the type that needs an automatic knife they can slam around without fear and isn’t afraid of the sharpening stone, the SOG TAC is a good choice.

The Benchmade Infidel is the brand’s top-of-the-line Out The Front automatic. This double edge dagger is deployed at lightning speed with the firm press of the sliding release button. There’s little doubt this is a serious tool and because it’s a double-action auto it can be fired and retracted by the slide of a button, requiring just one hand to use and put away again. The blade is made of D2 Tool Steel, and while some contend D2 is not the top choice for knives, when done correctly D2 can deliver great results and withstand years of harsh treatment. The Benchmade Infidel is not the showiest of OTFs but it will take – and deliver – a serious beating.

This awesome Out The Front switchblade by Microtech is the Combat Troodon OTF. If you are looking for a hardcore and heavy-duty OTF, then this double action dagger is a solid choice. Unlike most OTF automatic knives, the trigger is placed on the spine of the handle, which we found made for a much more natural transition from firing the blade to using the knife. The blade itself is one of the meanest looking we’ve come across, and this double edged dagger is made of S35-VN which is scary sharp and displays excellent edge retention. Actuating and retracting the blade feels very solid and seems to lock up tighter than most other OTFs. The T6 handle is a simple design, but features nicely machined grooves for positive gripping and includes quality details like the claw logo and specialty screws holding everything tightly in place. Generally, Out The Front automatic knives are pretty thick due to the mechanisms required for them to function, even more so if it is a double-action OTF, but the Combat Troodon feels surprisingly slim and light for being such a large knife. In keeping with its nasty nature, the Microtech Combat Troodon also features a stylized glass breaker spike sure to handle whatever smashing needs the operator may have.

The Tactical Response 4 from Pro-Tech Knives is one of the best all-around automatics for any tactical operation you may find yourself in. Pro-Tech is a family owned business specializing in switchblades, and they make limited numbers of their knives in small batches so as to ensure high levels of quality and maintain excellent craftsmanship. The TR-4 is the fourth generation of their tactical automatic knife series, and this beast is BIG. The long drop point blade and ample handle give plenty of options for how this automatic knife can be utilized, along with providing for various gripping preferences. The build quality of this automatic knife is outstanding. The whole knife has a very solid feel with refined construction and tight tolerances. There is absolutely no play in the blade or actuation button. Even the safety selector, a place many manufactures skimp, has a solid feel and audible snap when engaged. The handle has been well machined with plenty of finger grooves and ridges for great grip feel and the pommel features a steel glass breaker and large lanyard loop opening. The firing button and safety switch are only one sided, but recessed into the handle as an additional safety and leave plenty of room to be utilized with a gloved hand. There are many options available for the ProTech Tactical Response 4, many of which feature a 154-CM stainless blade in various finishes, but they also offer more refined versions of the TR-4 switchblade like the beauty shown above. This model has a steel frame in sleek stonewash finish, black DLC glass breaker, push button with pearl insert, and an awesome Damascus blade from Chad Nichols to create a very capable and drool-worthy automatic knife.

Securing your space is all about being proactive. All too often products and systems go unused because they are simply too difficult to routinely use. Here at the Labs we’re always on the lookout for new technology to help add some security to your space – and we love when they are intuitive and simple enough to actually get used. Check out these latest products and find out how to make your live a little safer.

Home Security made simple

Traditional home security systems are an excellent first line of defense, but they can also be very expensive, have limited functionality, and difficult to use (which often means they don’t). There’s a new player in the home security space and they’re aiming to fill the void that the standard home security players have left gaping. Scout is a next-generation home security system that combines cutting-edge hardware design with intuitive, easy-to-use controls. Motion sensors and open/close sensors relay information back to a base station hub connected to your home internet router so that you can configure your entire security system through your smartphone or computer. These wireless sensors boast a modern design aesthetic and a push-and-stick instillation that makes setup a breeze. Arm or disarm your system from anywhere in the world using your smartphone, tablet, or computer. If anything is out of the ordinary the Scout mobile app sends live info and allows for real-time monitoring.

Don’t get the door

Ever wonder who’s at the door but don’t want to give yourself away by sneaking up to the peephole? Or want a convenient way to monitor your front door while you’re away? DoorBot is an innovative solution that combines a Wi-Fi camera and microphone with a doorbell to relay information directly to your smartphone or tablet. When you have a visitor at your door you’ll be able to view a live video stream, hear them, and even respond.

Night Vision

Many intruders use the cover of darkness to aid them in their dastardly deeds for one very simple reason – It’s dang hard to see them. Automatic flood lights and other devices can help shed some light on the subjects, but smart burglars have ways around those. So, what you really need is the ability to see in the dark. Netgear knows not everyone has access to mil spec night vision goggles, or the ability to use them, so they’ve created another solution. Vue Zone is the simple to use remote video monitoring system by Netgear that allows users to keep an eye on things at all times. Easily monitor live video anytime or anywhere via your computer or with your iOS or Android enabled smartphone. And the best part of Netgear’s VueZone system is that it offers night vision functionality. With this add-on the Night Vision Camera detects motion and lets you see what’s going bump in the night. The system includes an infrared lamp that works in conjunction with the camera to illuminate up to 25 feet and can detect motion up to 15 feet. Sensor sensitivity can be dialed in to suit your needs and if anything is detected a customized alert will send you either a still image or short video clip of the perp in question.

Locked up tight

As a final line of security it’s best to get in the habit of locking away all valuables. This should include everyday items like your keys, jewelry, wallet, and important devices that contain sensitive personal information like your phone, laptops, and tablets. By storing your valuables in an easy-to-use safe you’ll not only have the peace of mind knowing they are securely protected, but they will also be neatly organized for convenient access when you need them.

Buying a dedicated safe for this purpose is becoming a popular choice. So, here are the top tips you’ll need to know to make an educated decision:

Purchase a safe with a proven lock that is also simple to use. The easier it is to operate the more likely you are to actually use it. Visit the Brown Safe website to learn more about safe lock types.

Consider the safe size. How many items will you be storing and how large are they? Do you want a safe that can fit on a counter top or desk for storage of your most used personal belongins? Or maybe a larger safe that fits in a cabinet or closet that can hold more? High quality safes can be made in sizes ranging from 14″ tall up 60″ or more.

Where will the safe be located? You’ll definitely want to place the safe in an accessible location. It’s much better to buy a reliable high quality safe that gets used, instead of hiding it away where it’s not convenient to access.

There are many different watch safes and jewelry safes made expressly for the secure storage of your valuables. Visit the Brown Safe website to select the right safe for you.

Since its inception, Bell & Ross has been associated with creating high-end timepieces inspired by and built for military, law enforcement, and other such professionals whose lives depend on their equipment. The original iconic square case and bold numerals are design features borrowed from that of aviation instruments, and highlights Bell & Ross’ focus on function. Created with four fundamental principles in mind: readability, performance, precision, and water-resistance; Bell & Ross watches are designed for those whom failure is not an option. Working under the motto that “The essential is never compromised by the superfluous.” Bell & Ross says the goal of their designers, engineers, and master watch makers is to make a truly utilitarian watch. This idea is even more evident in their limited edition Commando Series.

The matte gray colorway is the most distinguishing feature of the series. As a neutral color with a non-reflective surface it blends with most environments regardless of day or night operations. Typically, we think of a flat black finish as being the most conducive to not drawing attention, but that is actually only the case for very low-light scenarios. Since solid black is not a natural color it actually has a tendency to stand out to the human eye whereas the gray blends in no matter the light level.

The Bell & Ross BR01-96 And BR01-97 Limited Edition Commando Watches shown above kicked off the stylish and stealthy twist on the iconic designs. While currently these über cool Commando limited editions are available in the brand’s vintage collections, as either the BR 123 Commando automatic watch or the BR 126 Commando vintage chronograph shown below.

Inspired by watches worn by pilots during the 1940’s, the vintage collection combines a beautifully simple aesthetic that is both classic and streamlined. When coupled with the matte gray PVD finish on the 41mm case and steel components, and smooth matte gray rubber strap, both watches are instantly brought into the modern era; seamlessly bridging the gap between timeless timepiece design, contemporary style, and supreme functionality. All of which are characteristics we strive to create in our own products.

Sharing the same passion as Bell & Ross for designs that are inspired by and built for rigorous use, Brown Safe has created its own limited edition. A watch safe that pays homage to the same professionals who inspired the Bell & Ross Commando. The Chronos is world’s most secure watch safe, the roots of which stem from the military sector and for whom we originally developed much of the technology used in every Chronos Watch Safe built by Brown Safe. For this model we specifically took inspiration from the dark matte gray surface shared by U.S. military vessels and aircraft. The result was the Chronos Stealth Gray, a stunning Chronos luxury watch safe constructed of military-grade ballistic steel and finished in a color fitting of the technology and methods that inspired its creation. Visit the Brown Safe website to see more of the watch safe.

Dust is flying and so am I, as I cut hard to the inside to avoid a massive granite boulder and round the final bend, a blurry group becomes visible. It’s the finish line. And I’m almost there! Then out of nowhere, a gut-wrenching noise, and I feel the vehicle instantly start to bog. My brain instinctively snaps into problem solving mode and I quickly go down my mental checklist. Frantically, I search to identify the source of the sound…………..that god-awful sound that just won’t quit. I’m so close to finishing the race. It intensifies to the point of blaring and then…….I snap to………the dream is shattered as I realize the terrible screeching is my alarm awakening me to yet another Monday morning. Looks like the rat race is the only thing I’ll be running today.

2012 was proving to be a very demanding year, and was quickly turning exhausting. Orders kept pouring in like clockwork, but the current facility was proving just too small and overcrowded to meet demand. Jokes about finding smaller personnel so we could fit more within our limited space were appearing in the suggestion box, and were making their way into proposed solutions pile. All hands had been pulling excessive overtime hours for enough months that a 10 hour work schedule was simply referred to as “the old days”. Burnout syndrome was spreading faster than the flu.

My family and I own Brown Safe Manufacturing, one of the only safe and vault manufacturer’s left still building high-security products here in the U.S. During these uncertain times people are looking for quality products that they can depend on, and we’ve been working hard to meet their demands. Lately we’ve been busy, and I’m thankful we’re busy, but it’s been so long since I’ve raced that its driving me crazy. And as crazy as it sounds, I think it’s just the thing we need to recharge the ‘ol batteries. “Yes, that is the solution” I think to myself. We’ll knock the dust off by kicking up a little ourselves. We’ve all been pulling such long hours, we needed a reward, and another focus to really rally the troops.

Seemed odd to even suggest, but what the team really needed to boost production was a race. Something other than work drudgery we could focus on to lift spirits and rekindle the fire under our feet. I kneaded, and warped this thought around through my mind until I had myself fully convinced that it made perfect sense. All that was left was to simply finagle the rest of the family into believing it too.

So that Monday morning I marched head cocked high into our Department Heads meeting, determined we should pull out and dust off the race truck and prepare for some gritty glory. As I approached, the muffled yet commanding bellows of my father passed like thunder through the meeting room door, a heated discussion was already in full swing. Cautiously I entered. “Something radical must be done. We can’t risk pushing delivery times to our clients out beyond 6 weeks! … It’s time again we uproot!”

Unknowingly, I grasped a chair for support as the full impact of those words hit. Moving rapidly from my face, down into my chest, the realization takes hold and tightens…. We’re moving, oh god we’re moving!

To best relay the severity I experienced by the mention of a seemingly simple act, allow me to fill you in on a few details regarding our line of work. As the name suggests, Brown Safe is a family run operation that builds safes, big heavy safes, and lots of them. The task of moving over 250 tons of specialty equipment and supplies from one location to another, all while not disrupting the current flow of production, presents something of a challenge. And as the Chief of Operations, Dad would be setting his sights squarely on me to ensure it all proceeds without a hitch.

Then the 2nd realization hits and I find for a time my breathing has stopped completely… There can be no race, this move demands everything. Abandoning any hope of rest and rejuvenation in the form of an earthy escape, I buckle down and make it so. The following months blur as my brain and thoughts degrade into a mental mud puddle. During the few fleeting hours of sleep, I dream of sleep. Deep within the bowels of my new and yet far too familiar prison, after what feels like an eternity, the fog begins to thin and a spark of hope begins to feebly flicker into my reality. There goes another, and yet another. One by one the sparks continue to ignite. It’s the welders. New torches in hand with smiles from ear to ear, these pioneers are the frontline to the staged production transition, with succeeding waves from every other department soon to follow. The massive power network rerouted under the 65,000 sq ft slab is holding, Brown Safe breathes anew.

With those first sparks came another spark of hope, hope we could just maybe, possibly make a run for the last race of the season.

Fortunately, the whole Brown Safe team pulled together to finish off the race car so we could get out in the dirt before 2012 was over. We got everything together just in time to run the MORE (Mohave off road enthusiasts) Toys For Tots 200 race in Barstow CA. Barstow is known for being some of the roughest terrain in the so cal deserts, so we figured it would be a good proving ground for the new vehicle and for a good cause. We opted to run in the 3000 class with our racecar powered by a 4 cylinder GM 2.4L vvt engine burning E-85 ethanol. Our car was unique from the rest of the field because we were one of the few vehicles racing with a 4 speed manual transmission, which when used properly can give distinct advantages (but I’ll save that for a future post). Overall, the machine handled great and the twin fox shock absorbers at each wheel helped to soak up a lot of the nasty bumps in the harsh Barstow terrain. We completed the 200 mile race in 4:36 with a class high average speed of 45mph. That’s even with a flat tire that had to be changed by hand because of a failed air line. After starting as the 37th vehicle off the line, we ended up with 10th overall out of over 75 entries. There’s definitely more work to be done , but all and all I’m pretty happy with the vehicle and very happy that we got to get at least one race in before the end of 2012!

Recently Ben Stewart, the West Coast Editor for Popular Mechanics, stopped by the Brown Safe Research Labs. We had great time showing off some of the projects we’ve been working on and doing a few safe cracking demonstrations for him so he could better understand what separates a true high-security safe from inferior impostors. Being the highly technologically savvy guy that he is, Mr. Stewart was soon seeking more information about just what makes a safe a safe, and the protection level ratings that separate real safes from the thin metal boxes that are made to look like safes. After a full day of explaining the differences, we took him out to our private testing range where he could see the differences first hand…….add in a Barrett .50 cal…….and I think we proved our point. But you be the judge.

Head on over to the Popular Mechanics website to see the video of how our safes stack up against the competition and read his article about Ballistic Safe Testing 101.

With the new year comes all sorts of resolutions. Generally they involve some sort of penance for all of the gluttony we excuse ourselves of during the holidays, learn a new language, read more, or any other host of well-intentioned ideas that seem excellent for all of about two weeks. In fact the failed high hopes we set for ourselves can be a bit disheartening. However, what the new year does bring is a sense of renewed optimism, the feeling that we CAN and WILL do better. So this year resolve to make 2013 safer for all that you cherish most.

2012 has come and gone, along with the Mayan faux-pocalypse and other doomsday scenarios, but 2012 was a year of unspeakable tragedies. If there is anything that we learned from this past year its that the world is increasingly hostile and unfortunately there’s little that outside entities or legislation can do, so we must do everything in our own power to be prepared and make 2013 safer.

Here at the Brown Safe Research Labs we are committed to security at all levels. Our aim is to find innovative solutions and share our findings to help others. We’ll be exploring these ideas along with tactics, gear, and various methods in the coming year, but here are a few tips to kick 2013 off.

Begin with the brain:

You can take all the self-defense classes you want, be a black-belt, or the biggest dude on the block, but none of it means a thing unless you utilize your most important weapon – your head. Being mindful of your surroundings at all times so as to avoid potentially harmful situations before they arise is by far the most effective form of self defense. A quick mind is easily the most effective weapon in your arsenal when put into a dangerous situation. Remember to pay attention, keep calm, and think, and you’ll have a huge advantage over most.

Don’t make yourself a target:

Criminals are most likely to prey on those they view as weak. Evil-doers are opportunistic, but not necessarily dumb. Often they will seek out victims whom they believe are under-prepared to give themselves a higher chance of success. Outsmart burglars by being more prepared than they are. Start by setting up a zone of defense in your personal space. Regularly check doors, windows, and other potential points of access into your home. Consider investing in a security system. A monitoring system that will set off an alarm and alert the proper authorities when your home has been broken into can be a huge advantage. Make a plan and discuss with all members of the family the protocol for what to do in the case of a break in. And finally, securely lock away all weapons and valuables to ensure your family and items stay safe.

visit the Brown Safe website for more information on purchasing the right safe for your needs or visit our guide to buying a safe to learn more about the right level of security for you. And check back shortly for more in-depth insights regarding security, tactics, a tools to make 2013 safer for all.

The Ultimate stocking stuffer. Okay I know what you’re thinking – Shotgun!? That’ll never fit in a stocking! Meet the Kel-Tec Shotgun (KSG). This innovative bullpup style 12-gauge pump shotgun reduces the overall length by locating the action behind the trigger group to create a shotgun that is just over 26 inches long …..and thus easily fitting most standard stockings. This impressive little beast holds a total of thirteen 3” rounds; with six in each of its two tube magazines and one in the chamber. Select which tube the reliable pump action feeds from with a lever behind the trigger guard, or position in the middle to clear the chamber without another round feeding in from either magazine. Picatinny rails adorn the top and underside for the convenient mounting of optics, lights, lasers, and other accessories. So ladies, buy one of these for your man and he’s guaranteed to love you forever!
