Hi everyone. It’s time for a campaign update! We have been extremely busy. Hopefully you’ve seen us in several events throughout the district.

Recently, we attended the time capsule opening in Alexandria. The time capsule was buried fifty years ago and it was an exciting event.

I am door knocking in different areas so please look for me. I’d like to hear your thoughts and concerns. Also, we have five more parades to go and then will come the county fairs! If any one wants to help us meet the people, please send me an e-mail and someone will contact you with important details. Together you and I can make a difference.

Transmission lines across Minnesota

I attended a public hearing on the proposal to build three transmission lines across Minnesota. These lines would carry three separate 345,000 high voltage transmission lines; one to Monticello, one to the Marshall area, and one to Rochester. As could have been predicted, there were plenty of utility people trying to sell the public on why they need these lines. The proposal for these lines is coming from Xcel Energy and eleven other energy companies.

After all of the smoke screen speakers from different power companies spoke, the public was allowed to ask questions. Being a retired electrician, I knew what to ask and I wanted to know where Xcel Energy was going to get all of the power to send over these power lines? The Xcel Energy representative responded that most of the power would be generated in western Minnesota and they would have to build gas-fired peaking plants.

My response is that I can’t support the building of these lines until we get the total picture. Will these lines factor into the building of the Big Stone addition? The Xcel representative said no, but I think if approval for the lines were given it would not be long until there would be a push for the Big Stone addition.

Energy Credits

While everyone is talking about gas prices, I want to look ahead and also talk about how we are going to heat our homes this winter. Why doesn’t the government give tax credit for energy conversion? Heating oil and propane are reaching record prices, and neither the federal nor state government is encouraging people to change to electric heat. There should be loan money without interest and tax incentives to help pay for the conversion. Heat pumps (both air and water), electric furnaces, electric boilers, and solar power could be used to heat our water and our homes. I am afraid too many people will risk their lives by using electric, plug-in heaters to stay warm. Those small heaters are not approved for heating a house.

lock down

On June 7, 2008, my wife and I worked the bingo game at the Alex high school graduation lock down. There were over three hundred students in attendance. Food, pop, water, games and great times were had by the graduates. They could win paper money and buy tickets for a prize drawing, and the two big prizes were a thousand dollars and a late model car. We especially enjoyed the talent show. We were tired when we finally got home at 3:00 a.m., but we sure were happy to chaperone!

Bus drivers

District 206 bus drivers completed another successful year; transporting over three thousand students, twice a day, to school and back. They drove over seven hundred thousand miles without an injury. As of June 6, 2008, fifty drivers had completed CPR-FA as part of the district’s safety program, and each driver’s skills were also evaluated.

To celebrate, the drivers held a gathering where we shared bus driving stories and plenty of great food. It was my rookie year and, yes, I am going back. I enjoy driving and I have to see these students continue to grow. It’s amazing to see how much they have changed in nine months.

Rebuilding America’s Infrastructure

We need to rebuild America’s infrastructure. For every one BILLION DOLLARS spent on the war in Iraq we could create 42,000 jobs. Let’s invest in ourselves rather than in foreign wars.

As your representative I will work towards improving our infrastructure. Our roads, sewer stystems, and bridges are all badly in need of repair. Please send me any comments you have on this issue.

Vetoing bills that would raise the economy

The Governor continues to drive down the lives of men and women by vetoing parts of the bonding bill, and has reached a new low by vetoing the minimum wage proposal.

Four day school week

Many school districts are facing financial shortages and at least one is considering going to a four day school week. I would like to hear from you regarding this idea.
