Changing Times for Photographers

I have spent a great deal of time talking to photographers about the changing times in photography. The concerns are also shared by people in the magazine business as well as advertisers, all trying to realign their business models in the new digital era.

The so called demise of the newspaper and traditional magazine is a popular conversation and many are looking for answers. In many areas of photography such as editorial, architectural, fashion, beauty, photographers are facing budget cuts and being asked to get assignments done for half the money that was available just a few short years ago.

Pros who have spent years working on their craft are now faced with competition from people who just happen to own a high end digital camera and want to call themselves professional photographers.

Are we in an era when quality no longer matters and the criteria for doing a good job is just getting it done cheaper and faster? Has technology become our enemy as opposed to the friend of the professional?

These are some of the questions being asked.

As the new year begins we start off with a few new cosmetics images on the website, and new challenges in the commercial photography world.

Budgets are constantly being cut and commercial photographers are working hard to maintain quality in the face of a changing industry.

For this image we wish to thank Mathilda Christoffersen for prop styling, Sylvia Pichler for retouching and Graham Owen for creating the beautiful butterfly.
