Mangatawa has been selected to be exhibited at Tauranga Art Gallery for the inaugural Miles Art Award . The exhibition will run from December 18th 2010 - February 27th 2011.

Please take some time to visit this exhibition if you are in Tauranga during this time, there were over 100 entries, which demonstrates the interest and creativity of our regional art scene. The remaining works that have been chosen for the exhibition will all be contenders to win the Miles Art Award.

I have just completed a new piece in 'The Letter' series, this one is 'Postscript' and will feature in the Braveheart Youth Trust Art exhibition which begins with a gala evening May 27th.

I have just finished re-working my work "View from Te Ranga". Very, very happy and this piece now looks complete! I'd love to know what you think about the changes...

Hello Friends,

After an early morning visit to the site of The Battle of Te Ranga (1864) many photos, much contemplating, I have painted my first landscape in this sub-series for my New Zealand Land Wars theme.

Although I have used landscapes in my work quite a lot recently, the focus has always been on the figures. Dawn from Te Ranga is quite a revolutionary piece for me, in that it is devoid of figures, instead I have played on the presence of the trees on the horizon - almost Kaitiaki (guardian) like in form.

Mending Fences

I just finished the final stages of my painting entitled "Mending Fences.

If I decide it's finished, I'll varnish in about 7-10 days. Whatever changes I make before then, if any, will be subtle and probably won't really be noticable on screen. Something I hear a lot about my work (and the same for most art) is that the images on the internet don't do it justice. You really have to see these paintings to get the full impact... so you're more than welcome to pop by for a look first hand if you are in the area!

New Zealand Land Wars Series "Heeni"

Hi There,

I have completed the first in a series of works on stories from The New Zealand Land Wars. This piece captures the story of Heeni Te Kiri-Karamu giving Lieutenant-Colonel Booth water at Gate Pa 1864.

I have decided that I'll make each piece in this series available (beginning with this one of course) but there will be conditions as I'd like to display this body of work in its entirety in the near future. Please inquire if you are interested.

Girl at the Window

I have introduced some new and re-introduced some old techniques with Girl at the Window, created new colour and divided the picture frame in new ways also. I am very pleased with the results...

Nude di Pompeii 2005.

This piece has been left forgotten in a gallery for the past few years, it's now back in my studio and available for viewing/purchase. If you are familiar with my work from a few years back, you will recognize the heavy impasto, use of a lot of paint and rough treatment with the brush used to create this bold, expressive piece.

During 1997-2000 I spent a lot of time travelling throughout Europe and then Turkey. Nude di Pompeii is fairly self explanatory by it's title, the frescoes of Pompeii truly blew me away with just how modern they seemed for 2000 year old art works!

The Shearer

Serendipity

This is a painting that I abandoned in early 2008, was part of a larger canvas and would have part of my 'Lightly on the Land' exhibition. I've had it hanging on my studio wall for the last couple of months, have had some interesting feedback with most people being quite taken with it seeing it as a finished painting. And who am I to disagree? Some of my favourite works from history are unfinished (or appear to be).

So, I have decided to make this available as it is, though it will be signed. It could be hung loose as I have it or mounted and framed.

Working the Field

I've painted rural scenes for the last few years now, beginning with Brothers which is in the John Deere art collection in Illinois.

I grew up around farms, my parents always had small blocks, dad and I always doing various tasks together. It's a time and place where people really form a bond I think. An environment that most New Zealanders have been lucky to be connected to in some way.

My studio is in the city, we live in the apartment upstairs, have the performing arts school two buildings down. Although we fortunately have the wonderful wetlands and estuary two minute's walk from here, I feel even more compelled to paint these pieces now!

I love the way this subject was captured by Millet, Van Gogh, Bernard, Gauguin. The shape created by a person working the land in this way is very strong yet humble. Another inspiration for this work is the fields near the Papamoa hills here in the Western Bay of Plenty, which to me look quite European with the furrows and poplar trees. I've always intended to photograph this, but never take my camera with me! But I have seen it enough times to remember what I like about it.

Working the Fields is quite an accomplishment to me. It's very New Zealand, yet it could be anywhere. Something I often set out to capture in my work, and I think in this case have achieved.

New work | Gathering wood and Lavender

Hi Friends,

This piece has just been finished and I am very pleased with the outcome! This will be part of a series of works based on my model Shinae whom I have used for works in the past (Hope, Girl in a pensive mood, Girl with a basket of flowers, etc).

I have kept the background very simple to add emphasis to the figure and basket. I've sought to find the balance in softness and boldness, bringing high contrast and tonal balance in to the piece with the addition of the lavender (just added today).

I have literally moved mountains in stage six of Oranga, extending the horizon by adding more behind the existing, also extending the foreground back into the hills to give better perspective.
