Firefighters and paramedics are at high risk of injury in part due to strenuous activities performed in dynamic environments. SPIFi aims to implement a risk management process that engages members of the workforce in the identification and reduction of hazards associated with specific tasks. The goal is to reduce the number and severity of injuries among fire service personnel of the TFD with hopes of providing other departments with a model to adopt and adapt.

Project Pawprint used innovative research and student engagement to enhance the sustainability of the biggest UA event held every year: Homecoming. During Homecoming 2012, students involved in Project Pawprint collected baseline data related to the environmental impact of the event’s energy usage, travel and accommodations, food and materials. For Homecoming 2013, they used that data to reduce the impact by setting up more carpooling and public transportation options and helping food vendors switch from Styrofoam to paper plates so that composting could be an option.

Taylor came down to our studio from Phoenix with more than 60 handmade fishing lures he painstakingly designed and painted over the last year. A tattoo artist by trade, Taylor creates an aesthetic that is likely a little unusual to the average fly fisherman, but none the less alluring to any discerning salmon, trout, or three-spined stickleback. It was a pleasure to shoot such ornate objects on so small a scale and we’re really pleased with the results. Product photography can be challenging, but with Taylor’s beautiful, tattoo-inspired creations, we had no trouble accentuating what makes them unique and desirable.

Even after the flames are out, vapors arising from a smoldering environment – the overhaul stage of a fire – present great dangers to firefighters. The Compost Cats, a UA student-run club, collects food waste on campus and turns it into compost. The club helps reduce methane emissions by collecting organic waste and disposing of it properly, “turning garbage into gardens.”

Every weekday, a team of undergraduate students collects food waste—like coffee grounds, fruit rinds, and leftover bread—from the Student Union Memorial Center. This waste is mixed with horse manure and shaped into windrows. Over time it becomes usable, fertile compost fit for any garden. Students also collect compost from 16 local businesses, including Whole Foods, Chipotle, Beyond Bread, and Subway, as well as grass clippings from campus landscaping projects.

High-quality compost is gardening gold: Compost sales in the U.S. are worth some $250 million a year. With support from the UA Green Fund, Compost Cats plans to purchase a large-scale soil sifter in order to bag and sell Wildcat brand compost. Compost Cats also continues to fund six student employees, who gather 15,000 pounds of greenery and 7,000 pounds of food waste each week. As the only entirely student-run university composting organization in the nation, Compost Cats is in a position to bring not only recognition but also revenue to the UA, while also reducing the university’s dependence on chemical fertilizer for campus landscaping.

Michaela and I were thrilled to be invited by the University of Arizona to a sneak preview of the new Bryant Bannister Tree-Ring Building prior to it’s opening. We were excited to be a small part of celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the program.

Since the program’s inception in 1937 researchers have operated in less-than-ideal conditions under the west side of the football stadium. The new building offers about 7,000 more square feet of space and has quite a presence on campus. Thomas Swetnam, Director for the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, was at the event to celebrate with special attendees and donors who helped make the new laboratory possible: “One of the most exciting aspects of the beautiful new building is that it is designed, in part, to share our past discoveries and current scientific work with the public.” Read more about the laboratory here: http://ltrr.arizona.edu

Together with local Tucson talent Gabriel Sullivan and Carl Hanni, we set out to create a Kickstarter campaign that explored the past, present, and future of songwriter and musician Billy Sedlmayer. We wanted to share some insight into why Billy is so special to the Tucson music scene in order to fund the production of his first full length album. He was able to earn over $10,000 from the selfless benefactors who saw this video and felt what we felt. This is just the beginning of a much larger documentary project featuring the life of Billy Sedlmayer and the creation of his album.

“Tucson Kills” is the introduction to and documentation of songwriter Billy Sedlmayr’s collaboration with Gabriel Sullivan and The Taraf de Tucson. Billy’s song was not only learned by the band over the course of an evening, but they also expanded it into an intricate and unmistakably Tucson-tinged arrangement that immediately interweaves itself into the city’s history. Helping to tap into the historic nature of the song is the location of the video, La Cocina, which is in the heart of the El Presidio District of downtown Tucson.

Adan De La Garza hasn’t had much luck selling his art.

“If people are interested in my work,” he says in an e-mail, “they don’t want to pay for it. I hear a lot of, ‘I like it, but I just wouldn’t want it in my house.’ Which is fine, because I don’t see many drapes that match my art.”

The problem is, he’s moving to Colorado for grad school in about a month, and he doesn’t want to take his archive with him. He’d rather have people take his works for free, and he’d rather have his art displayed somewhere other than his room, even if he doesn’t make any money off it.

“It’s amazing how interested people are once they think they can get something for free,” he says. And so, the Steal My Art exhibit was born.

Guests at the event will be able to actually rip his work off of the walls and take it home—if he doesn’t catch you. That sets up an interesting dynamic, “because you’ll have me trying to prevent it and encourage it at the same time,” he explains.

De La Garza believes that the event will let people interact with the art in a way that isn’t sterile or stagnant, as galleries often can be. “I wanted to provide a chance for people to interact with the art, but think on their toes at the same time,” he says.

The event, which De La Garza calls “an exploration through the archives of unsellable work and failed ideas,” will feature a collection of photographs, screen-prints, zines and other work spanning the last six years. The event (and whatever you can grab) is free, but remember—think fast!
