Year 12 provisional subject choices for September 2012.

•  If you would like to study AS levels or equivalent you should gain at least FIVE full GCSEs at Grade C or above.  If you are likely to do so, choose one subject from each of 4 columns in the Level 3 options table.  You will not make a choice from one option column.
• If you think you are unlikely to achieve 5 grade A* -C in Full course GCSEs then please also complete one of the Level 2 options tables.

 The courses are outlined in the Post 16 Option booklet.

If you need any further advice please see subject teachers or myself.

If insufficient numbers choose a subject from the attached grid then it may be withdrawn or only offered in one column; if this is the case then I will contact you and ask you to rechoose.

N.B.

• If you choose BTEC Engineering then you must choose it in columns B and C.
• If you choose BTEC Sport then you must choose it in columns B and C.
• You can choose to study Health and Social Care as a Single or Double option. If you choose the Double option then you must choose it in columns A and C.
• If you wish to choose Double Maths you must choose it in columns A and D.

Please detach and complete the attached Learning Pathways/options grid and ask your parent/carer to sign the sheet.

Participants will walk in small groups accompanied by a member of staff. They will be working on map skills throughout the walk. Participants should bring a map (OS Explorer 151) and compass if they have one.

When the route was last walked it was muddy, therefore walkers must bring appropriate footwear (ideally walking boots, or other boots that support the ankle) and clothing (a waterproof coat if the weather is wet).  It is likely that walkers will get very wet and muddy so it is recommended that they also bring a change of clothes, or that you bring this when you collect them. Also, as there are some steep sections on the walk, a pair of trekking poles would be useful.

 For subjects offered in Collaboration at Bridgend College and Heronsbridge School. Tuesday7th February.  Interested pupils must see Miss Nightingale for details and return consent forms by Friday 3^rd February.

Choosing your 6^th form Learning pathways and “options” – “What’s it all about?”
 A presentation by Mr Hopkins, Deputy Headteacher, Ms Nightingale, Assistant Headteacher and Mr Harris, Head of 6^th form to interested students only on Monday 6^th February – BRYNCH period 2 and TEGSL period 3. Both will take place in the Upper School Hall instead of the usual Games and RS lessons.  (Non interested students must attend RS or Games)

“New” subjects at Advanced Level presentations for interested students in assembly time in 72B

All Brynteg pupils and “new” pupils are invited.  All departments will be available for consultation and discussion. Formal presentations at specific times plus representatives from our Bridgend Learning Network partners including Bridgend College and Heronsbridge School. Careers Wales staff will also be present.

The Movie Club will be screening Inception on the 25th on Jan. The Show starts at 3.30pm on screen (ahem, I mean room) 6 and finishes at around 4.45pm

That’s right, Rydell High is coming to Brynteg. Don’t be “Stranded at the drive in” Come and audition. We are looking for Pink Ladies and T-Birds. Maybe you see yourself as the next Danny or Sandy. How ever you are cast you can be sure it’s going to be a “shoo bop shoo wadda wadda yipitty boom de boom” of a show when it goes live at the Porthcawl Pavillion in October.

Auditions are being held at lunchtime on the 27th of Jan in room 19 and on the 2nd of Feb in the lower school hall.

Last day of term arrangements and uniform reminders

Please may I take the opportunity to inform you that we will be closing slightly earlier at 2.20 pm on Friday 16^th December 2011. The school morning will be exactly the same as usual other than the lunch period which will be 12.30 to 1.20 pm.  The afternoon session will begin promptly at 1.20 pm for an end of term form period.  The end of the school day for the children will be 2.20pm.  Arrangements can be made with the school to supervise any pupil who is unable to go home at that time.

If Santa does come with hats and scarves over Christmas please can he ensure that in line with school uniform guidelines they are plain and dark?  Brightly coloured or striped scarves and hats will not be permitted in school.  Outside coats should be plain and mostly dark. Gilets or bodywarmers and UGG boots have become very popular but they are not school uniform and should not be worn to school.  Jewellery is a popular Christmas present but is not appropriate to daily school life.   Please no Christmas piercings either.

One other real concern at the moment is the length of girls` skirts.  Can I ask you for your support in ensuring that girls` school skirts are not too short nor too tight?

Pupils at Brynteg School may enter the award at either Bronze (currently Year 10) or Silver (currently Year 12). The achievement of gaining the award is widely recognised in education and employment. Both Bronze and Silver consist of four elements, Skill (learning a new skill such as playing an instrument or learning a new language), Physical (participating and improving at a sport or dance), Volunteering (committing to helping around school, working in a charity shop or learning first aid) and an Expedition (Bronze will be two days walking and one night camping, Silver will be three days walking and two nights camping). Participants are to show commitment to all sections of the award that they are working towards.

In the last academic year we had 22 Year 12 pupils completing the Silver Award. The practice expedition was in the Brecon Beacons and all participants completed the three days walking carrying all of their equipment and being totally self sufficient. The assessed expedition was on Gower following mainly coastal paths. All of those that walked on the Gower passed the Expedition section of the award!

Currently at Brynteg School we have around 90 pupils signed up for the Bronze Award and 40 pupils signed up for the Silver Award. Both groups attend separate training sessions.

Also, throughout the spring and summer leading up to the expedition there will be day walks arranged, these form part of the training and it is important that pupils try to take part in these walks

We have been informed by a number of associations including the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, National Union of Teachers, NAS/UWT and UNISON that they will be taking industrial action in the form of a strike on Wednesday, 30^th November 2011.

This action is not against the school itself but is part of a national industrial action organised by these trades unions about changes to the pensions’ schemes of their members.

There is no requirement on unions to inform us of which members of staff will take action, and it may be that they will not know themselves as there is no obligation on members of unions to obey a strike call.

Neither the Governing Body nor the Headteacher is legally allowed to close the school ‘in sympathy’ with the strike and we will not do so.  However, our main concern is the safety of our students. The school will only close if in the opinion of the Headteacher it is not safe to remain open.  If action is prolonged, we will endeavour to protect the education of those on examination courses.

Based on the number of staff likely to be taking industrial action a risk assessment has been carried out.  As a consequence the decision has been made to close the school to all pupils on Wednesday, 30^th November 2011.  Every effort has been made to give you as much notice as possible.  If, for whatever reason, the situation within the school changes every effort will be made to notify you of the changes as soon as possible, either by our texting service or via the school web site.

We must all hope that the issues over which the industrial action has arisen are resolved as soon as possible.
