Second vehicle in the hydro jet series that I designed and built for Riptide GP: Renegade...the "Manta!" Chronologically, this was my very first vehicle build for the Vector Unit team. Lots of learning and trial and error and late nights to get this one up to spec!‪#‎vectorunit‬, ‪#‎riptidegprenegade‬

Riptide GP: Renegade - Typhoon Hydro-jet

noreply@blogger.com (Brandon Luyen) — Fri, 05 Aug 2016 09:35:00 +0000

One in a series of vehicle work I did last year for 'Riptide GP: Renegade' from the cool folks over at Vector Unit. The game is out now on all major platforms and mobile as well! The tear-sheet is the unpainted primer version of the hydro-jets. The transform sequence was some of the most fun and challenging mechanical work that I've done!

Hi Everyone!
I'm really happy to share with everyone our game project, Labyrinth, that we've been working on for the past year at Free Range Games. We just got the Green Lighted and will now continue to work towards release onto Steam. As of October 7th, we're currently ranked # 14 on the Greenlight program. Thank you for your support and please feel free to share our project page and help us get additional votes to push our game into the top 10!

Cheerio!

Project: Game of Thrones Countdown # 003

noreply@blogger.com (Brandon Luyen) — Wed, 16 Jul 2014 10:41:00 +0000

Another armor study. Varying the colors just a bit to see if I can add more punch than the source photo. Fun learning process for this one. Was really interesting to find out how some values don't seem to work until you place another value next to it.

Project: Game of Thrones Countdown # 002

noreply@blogger.com (Brandon Luyen) — Wed, 09 Jul 2014 11:26:00 +0000

Teh second photo study...a little past the due date of the usual G.O.T TV night time-slot. I focused a little harder to really nail some of the colors with some other color choices thrown in just to experiment. The armor itself was interesting as the chest guard thing looks like a bib, heh. Fun piece...though I think I spent way more than my originally allotted studying time.

Project: Game of Thrones Countdown # 001

noreply@blogger.com (Brandon Luyen) — Tue, 01 Jul 2014 08:55:00 +0000

So I've got a really bad case of Game of Thrones withdrawal symptoms now that season 4 is over. To calm some of the jitters, and also to clear my mind of the fight of the series between the Red Viper and the Mountain, I've decided to do armor studies on what would otherwise be Game Of Thrones TV night. Here's the first one. I've modified it a bit because the original armor looks like it has a slight belly...not too knightly in my opinion.

Late night photo study

noreply@blogger.com (Brandon Luyen) — Mon, 09 Jun 2014 09:35:00 +0000

A lot of fun doing this one...though definitely tough getting the likeness just right. Needs just that bit more to nail it.

FreeFall Tournament Gunner-E

noreply@blogger.com (Brandon Luyen) — Fri, 09 Aug 2013 07:13:00 +0000

This is one of my latest designs for an armor class from our free to play game, FreeFall Tournament. Check out the game if you get a chance and let me know what you think!
The design itself is inspired by the Catherine-B320 character from Halo Reach. The top pic has all the character gear. The bottom pic is the armor sans gear. Lots of fun working on this one!

Anatomy rendering with edge control and smudge brush

noreply@blogger.com (Brandon Luyen) — Thu, 04 Apr 2013 09:06:00 +0000

Going back to human anatomy studies focusing on skin tones and values rendering. Really working at getting that photo real look with minimal work. Edge control in contrast to blending with the smudge brush was interesting. Thanks for sharing your photoshop techniques Mr Robot Pencil! Have to still figure out a way to duplicate the look of water and bumpy skin texture...

noreply@blogger.com (Brandon Luyen) — Fri, 15 Mar 2013 09:36:00 +0000

Another value study...too slow though...was done half asleep. These are all real life armor and are so awesome! When I grow up I want to be a knight and get my own armor!

noreply@blogger.com (Brandon Luyen) — Thu, 14 Mar 2013 10:45:00 +0000

I miss sleep...but I miss drawing even more when I'm not drawing. An hour long value study. Learned a LOT from this exercise. There is so much subtlety in the shadows.
