Concepts on Metso’s Biomass Based Bio-Oil plant project to be discussed at BTL & Bio-Based Chemicals conference

Metso has built a 7 t/d integrated bio-oil pilot plant utilizing saw dust and forest residues as feedstock, in co-operation with UPM, Fortum and the Technical Research Center of Finland. As part of the project, a novel integrated wood based bio-oil concept will be developed. The related concept covers the entire business chain, from feedstock purchase and pre-treatment to bio-oil production, transportation, storage and end use.

And Metso Power will be sharing more on the above project at the BTL & Bio-Based Chemicals conference in Rotterdam on 6-7 Oct 2010. More specifically Dr. Jani Lehto, Project Manager of Metso Power will do so as he presents his paper on Producing Biomass Based Bio-Oil in Tampere, Finland – Technological Development & Promising Applications.

Ingvar Landälv is born 1950 and is a Swedish citizen. He graduated in 1975 with a MSc in Physics & Chemistry. He has more than 30 years experience of process R&D, design, engineering, construction and operation of gasification based process plants based on oil, coal and biomass as feedstock. He holds a number of patents in the area of energy integration in gasification based processes.

Since 1997 he has been full time engaged in the development and commercialization of the Chemrec black liquor gasification technology serving as Chief Technology Officer. In this capacity he has taken the initiative to convert the pulp mills to biorefineries thus making the mills producers of syngas based fuels / chemicals besides there base product paper pulp.

Michiel Carbo (1978) graduated from the Technical University of Eindhoven with a Master’s degree in studied Building Services, and attended the postgraduate course ‘Process and Equipment Design’ at the Chemical Engineering department of Delft University of Technology. He has been with the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) for 6.5 years, and conducted research on CO2 capture technologies as well as biomass gasification, gas cleaning and fuel synthesis. At present he coordinates all Bio Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) R&D activities at ECN.

Stephen Piccot serves as Director of Advanced Energy and Transportation Technologies for Southern Research Institute and has overall responsibility for the Institutes operations in North Carolina. He has 30 years of experience executing and leading environmental, energy and transportation technology research, development, and demonstration efforts. Mr. Piccot founded the Clean Energy Development Center in Durham, North Carolina – an advanced energy laboratory that designs, builds, operates pilot-scale industrial prototypes of advanced technologies that produce a range of bioproducts.

He has developed national measurement standards, field-demonstrated advanced energy and vehicle technologies, and developed energy demand and emissions forecast models. He has advised several organizations on technology issues including the World Bank, the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the U.S. EPA, The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce, and the Center for the Advancement of Energy Markets.

Juliette Imbach graduated from Ecole Normale Supérieure of Chemistry in Paris where she did a PhD in Solid Chemistry. Later, she worked for a consulting company specialized in innovation for 6 years where she developed the energy business unit.

In 2007, she integrated a techno economic service in the CEA, a French government-funded technological research organisation specialized in New Technology Energy and nuclear.

She is now in charge of the biomass supply and the economic field related to the BtL project called Syndiese.

Dr. Stefan Tostmann is presently the Head of Unit, Energy Technologies and Research Co-ordination, 2009. He studied law in Germany & France in 1980- 1985 and obtained his PhD from the Free University of Berlin, 1998

He has led activities to focus EU Energy Research Work Programme on less projects with more impact, in line with EU SET-Plan priorities from 2008 to 2009

He has also led activities formulating and executing offshore wind part of European Energy Recovery Programme in 2009 and is currently working on industry-oriented international activities within the SET-Plan (Strategic Energy Technologies Plan).

New Zealand-based clean technology company LanzaTech has attracted US$18M Series B financing from investors led by China focused venture capital firm Qiming Ventures.

LanzaTech uses proprietary bacteria to convert industrial waste gases into fuels and chemicals. The financing follows LanzaTech’s signing with Baosteel, China’s largest steel and iron conglomerate, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to commercialize its technologies for producing ethanol from steel mill off gases.

Gary Rieschel, Founder and Managing Director of Qiming, says Lanzatech represents a great opportunity for China.

China, an up and coming market, is setting its eyes on LanzaTech due to the significance of its unique technology – using bacteria to convert waste gas to low cost liquid biofuel.
