Durango
Mountain Resort (formerly Purgatory Resort), located just 30 minutes
north of Durango in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado, offers
a unique blend of Western hospitality and classic Colorado skiing. The
terrain is 23% beginner, 51% intermediate, and 26% advanced/expert. Over
40 miles of trails cover 1,200 acres of skiable terrain within a 2,500
acre area. The mountain receives over 260 inches of snow annually, much
of it in overnight snowfalls followed by bluebird days. This phenomenon
has earned us the #1 ranking in North America for winter weather.
New
improvements for the 2000/2001 season include a six passenger high-speed
super chair that takes riders to the top of the mountain in less than
6 minutes, Purgy's Slopeside restaurant, new ski and snowboard programs
for families and children, a nighttime lesson center, a 25% increase in
snowmaking capacity, and Star Safari, our new mountaintop star gazing
program. Purgatory and Durango Mountain Resort have long been a favorite
with skiers and snowboarders from all over - but with a renewed commitment
to serving our guests, and $5 million in improvements this year, we think
you'll notice a difference. For mountain information and reservations,

Summer at Durango Mountain Resort offers a wide variety of activities
including fly fishing, golf, horseback riding, mountain biking, 4X4 jeep
tours, scenic chairlift rides, and the Alpine Slide, a mountain 'bobsled'
ride. The Purgatory Village Festival Tent is home to summer events, featuring
everything from classical and Celtic music to blues and brewers' festivals.
Luxury slopeside lodging is available at Purgatory Village Condominium
Hotel, with units ranging from hotel rooms to three bedroom/ three bath
condominiums. For information or reservations, call 800-693-0175.
Purgatory also has some of the best hiking in the Rockies. One of the
most beautiful hikes is also the easiest - all downhill. Take the Twilight
chairlift to mid-mountain and walk approximately 1.5 miles back down.
The area is alive with streams for fly fishing, whether you're looking
for Brookies, Cutthroat, or native Browns you'll find them here. Hermosa
Creek to the west, the Animas River to the east, and Cascade Creek to
the north all offer fine mountain fishing. Many of our small streams are
designated catch-and-release, so you can't keep your catch, but you will
enjoy yourself.
Durango is known as a mountain bike mecca, and Durango Mountain Resort
offers over 50 miles of lift-accessed trails, everything from gentle cruisers
to screaming downhill. You can still ride the course used in the first
ever Mountain Bike World Championships, held here in 1990. World class
mountain bike competition returns in 2001, with a UCI triple event to
be held July 13-15. The cross- country races will be held in town, while
the dual slalom and downhill courses will be located on the mountain.
According to officials, the race could draw as many as 25,000 spectators
and competitors. Other World Cup venues for 2001 include Italy, Belgium,
Slovenia, France, Japan, Austria and Canada.
Music in
the Mountains, a three-week classical music festival, plays in the
Purgatory Village Festival Tent from the end of July through the first
weekend in August. Music Director and Conductor Mischa Semanitzky delights
music lovers as he directs first-and second-chair players from around
the country. For information and ticket orders, call 970-247-8900.
