A young man is captured by pirates and is persuaded to join the crew rather than walk the plank. After a few weeks at sea the captain speaks to the man and asks him how he is getting on. The man replies that on the whole he is enjoying things – the rum-soaked drinking binges, the plundering, etc – but there was one thing missing.

“What’s that?” asks the captain.
“Well, there are no women” replies the man.

“Arrr” says the captain “Follow me!” The man follows the captain to what appears to be a barrel, on top of the barrel stands a coconut with a face drawn on and a few strands of wispy straw for hair. On the barrel is a crude outline of a woman’s body and between the legs is a bung hole. “We calls her Carmen,” says the captain, “and you may take her as you will”. The man explains that he was unlikely to make use of her and goes on his way.

However, as the months go by with no respite, Carmen appears more and more attractive to the young man. Finally he can resist her no longer and the man has his wicked way with Carmen the rum barrel. To his amazement the experience is far more satisfying than he could ever have imagined!

The next day the captain greets him again. “How did you get on with Carmen then, lad?” he asks eagerly. The man replies “Rather better than I thought… actually, it was rather good!”

“Good,” says the captain, a great beaming smile splitting his black-bearded face. “It’s your turn in the barrel tomorrow!”

Captain William Kidd did! But most pirates wanted to spend there loot as fast as they acquired it. Much of the booty that pirates would plunder would not be silver, gold, and jewels. A smart pirate also saw the value in ordinary trade goods like food, lumber, cloth, medicine, animal hides, and similar articles. If you buried these things they would lose their value quickly! Still, if you happened to get a metal detector this Father’s Day, it wouldn’t hurt to take it out on the beach and go searching. Who knows what you may find?

Piracy was very much a man’s world and women were not allowed aboard pirate ships; it was part of the ‘Pirate’s Code’. However, there were one or two notable exceptions where women did go to sea and when they did, they often proved to be more than a match for the men, Anne Bonney and Mary Read were famous examples. Here is a true story of another young woman who was taken to sea against her will, and how she dealt with her situation.

Emmy Tot was born into Scottish aristocracy. Christened, Emmaline Tottington, at the age of nineteen, she was taken into employment as Lady in Waiting to the Countess of Eglinton in the North Ayrshire district of Cunninghame, of which Irvine is the predominant town. There is, in the centre of Irvine, a rather gruesome tribute to Emmy’s exploits. Standing on top of a lantern, over the doorway of the Eglinton Arms Hotel, is the figure of a girl, holding in one hand a sword, dripping blood, and in the other, a severed head.

As the story goes, The Earl of Eglinton was hosting a banquet at Eglinton Castle, just outside Irvine. In those days, Irvine was a busy seaport and often there were merchant ships of varying size and from different countries docked in the harbour. One such was the ‘Amsterdam’, a vessel commanded by Jan Van der Goot, a small time privateer, sailing under the Dutch flag. It was the Earl’s custom to invite to his banquets, the master of any ship that happened to be in the harbour at the time and Van der Goot was included on this occasion.

The moment that he set eyes on Emmy, he was captivated. He asked the vivacious lady in waiting to join him on his ship, but she was not interested in the Dutchman and refused. Van der Goot however, was a determined man and through the night, he returned with four of his crew, broke into her room and abducted her, carrying her back to his ship. They took her to Van der Goot’s cabin and locked her in, setting sail out of Irvine almost immediately. Once at sea, the cowardly captain stayed on deck drinking with his men, while Emmaline pondered her fate in the cabin below.

Several hours later and very much the worse for drink, Van der Goot returned to his cabin and found his captive, curled up on the floor in the corner, apparently asleep. Totally drunk, he threw himself, fully dressed onto his bed and was soon snoring. But Emmaline in fact, was wide awake and biding her time. She waited maybe half an hour to make sure that her captor was sleeping deeply before quietly getting to he feet. She moved over to where the captain was stretched out on his bed. Then carefully drawing his dagger from its scabbard, she thrust it into his chest, piercing his heart! For a moment his eyes opened in surprise. Then, just as quickly, they closed. Van der Goot was dead!

Emmaline was not yet finished. She drew out the captain’s sword and with a few hacking blows, cut his head from its body! Dragging her grisly prize out of the cabin, and still carrying the sword, dripping with blood, she made her way onto the deck. At the point of the sword, she forced the helmsman to ring the ship’s bell, summoning the crew on to the deck. It was nearly dawn and most of the men were sleepy eyed and still half-drunk. But they soon sobered up when they saw Emmaline holding up the severed head of their captain! She demanded that they turn about and take her immediately back to Irvine. They were too shocked to argue and did as they were told.

The Earl of Eglinton was so impressed by Emmy’s bravery that as a tribute, he added the figure of a girl holding a sword and a severed head to the crest of his coat of arms, and there it remains to this day!
Copyright – Leslie Melville 1998.

Footnote: She’s now holding an anchor rather than a sword. I guess it was too bloodthirsty. Boo!

A pirate walks into a bar and the bartender says, “Hey, I haven’t seen you in a while. What happened, you look terrible!”
“What do you mean?” the pirate replies, “I’m fine.”
The bartender says, “But what about that wooden leg? You didn’t have that before.”
“Well,” says the pirate, “We were in a battle at sea and a cannon ball hit my leg but the surgeon fixed me up, and I’m fine, really.”
“Yeah,” says the bartender, “But what about that hook? Last time I saw you, you had both hands.”
“Well,” says the pirate, “We were in another battle and we boarded the enemy ship. I was in a sword fight and my hand was cut off but the surgeon fixed me up with this hook, and I feel great, really.”
“Oh,” says the bartender, “What about that eye patch? Last time you were in here you had both eyes.”
“Well,” says the pirate, “One day when we were at sea, some birds were flying over the ship. I looked up, and one of them shat in my eye.”
“So?” replied the bartender, “what happened? You couldn’t have lost an eye just from some bird shit!”
“Well,” says the pirate, “I really wasn’t used to the hook yet.”

A large Humpback whale is lazily enjoying a beautiful day when he sees a female Humpback whale just a little ways off, and he thinks to himself that he’s going to try to impress her…
He swims over to her, and breeches the surface, showing off the large hump on his back.
She looked unimpressed as she breached and showed a larger more well formed hump herself.
Now, a little embarrassed, he tries again to impress her by taking a breath and blowing a huge cloud of mist and water with a really nice rainbow in it.
Once again she looked unimpressed and she blew a larger cloud of mist, with a more beautiful rainbow.
Now clearly agitated, the Male sees a Naval vessel in the distance and races off toward it. Just before he collides with the ship, he dives, jumps out of the water and as he sails over the bow of the ship, he plucks a sailor off the deck and in one gulp swallows him whole!
He swam back to her very proud of himself, only to find the female object of his attentions with a disgusted look on her face…
As she swam off she said…”I’ll Hump, I’ll Blow, BUT I WON’T SWALLOW SEAMEN!

I keep hearing a story about Blackbeard’s body swimming around a ship three times before it stopped moving. I wanted to know what started this rumor and the best I could come up with is this. A man named Robert Maynard hunted him down and a bloody battle ensued on November 22nd, 1718. Before his head was lopped off so the bounty could be collected, Blackbeard sustained at least 5 gun shots and over 20 sword cuts before he could be taken down. So, I’m thinking if anyone’s corpse could be this lively, it might be Blackbeard. Any thoughts?

A group of men wanted to build a copy of the famous “Black Pearl”, not only as it used to look but also with the same materials and in the same place where this famous ship was built 338 years ago! The wood used included the Santa Maria wood for the frame and the Pine for the sheathing. The Black Pearl was constructed according to a primitive drawing by one of the sea robbers, who was sailing this ship. A lot of time was spent drawing and designing the ship, constructing and paying attention to all the details to preserve the original look of the vessel.
This ship will hold a capacity of 70 tourists and 8 crew members who can live aboard comfortably. The ship has 2 cabins with a bathroom and a toilet, two other smaller cabins and a cabin for a crew. It also has an equipped kitchen which is located in the bow. The ship also offers 2 public toilets for men and women.
This ship has 5 huge canvases and is 27 meters long and 7 meters wide. A main pole is 25 meters high and a standby pole is 18 meters high. The ship has 3 decks and an underdeck. We believe that you will be as enthusiastic as we are after seeing this new pearl of the Caribbean Sea!
