Recently, I was asked if dressing up a dog for the holidays is alright. My answer is a clear yes. Even dogs who have never been dressed at all can enjoy a little t-shirt.

You do special things for the holidays. You may even have special outfits yourself that you wear only for Christmas dinner. Let your dog share in this excitement and fun. Most dogs will appreciate the extra attention they get not only when you put the clothes on them, but also the extra ooos and ahhs that you give them.

A simple sweater or t-shirt may be all that you need to put on your dog to dress her up for the holidays. Full Christmas costumes can work for those dogs that are used to being dressed up. This little shirt is one of many you can find on Zazzle.com. Just click through this picture and see how cute your dog can be.

The BuckHawk Center website got a new feel, from the back end that is. You won’t see much of a change as a viewer, but I get to see the change as the administrator. This change comes to us from a great support team.

The main support came from Anne, owner of SEO Praxis hosting company. With her help, our site is now easier to manage with more security than I knew existed. Anne was a gem in helping me along every step of the way. Never did she even seem upset with all my questions and pleas for help. She just happily answered my questions, took care of everything, and kept smiling the whole way.

A second support person has been Paula of Lake Erie Artists. She helped me configure our new site to work smarter for us. Paula only chuckled when I warned her she may get sick of me sooner than later. She may have stopped chuckling by now, but she hasn’t let on to me.

Last, but certainly not least, is Kathy of Katrick Supplies. She has been not only a dear friend, but also a huge supporter of the BuckHawk Center and all of our rescue work. Kathy has saved me from myself, which is not easy to do.

So huge Thank Yous go to Anne, Paula and Kathy for all their help in improving our site.

Motley’s background is a sad one. He was loved and cared for by his human, a teenaged girl. She did a great job of training him to be that special friend. But, she moved on and Motley couldn’t go with her. Now, he enjoys plenty of room to run and play with canine friends.

He’s a big dog, standing close to 30 inches tall and weighs in around 100 pounds, but he’s the gentle nature of a Great Dane and the loyal love of a Lab. Motley is just about 2 years old, so he has fully outgrown his puppyhood, but has plenty of time left to love his new humans.

If you are interested in adopting Motley, please visit our adoptions page to learn more.

Such a treat to see new updates from our adopters, and I received one yesterday. Our beloved Quincy, who was adopted last year, is doing just great. I had a delightful call with her new parents several weeks ago, with lots of wonderful news about her. Then in my email yesterday came the promised photos of her.

Quincy went through some harrowing times when we first rescued her. She had her three young pups in toe and made sure they were taken care of before she showed me that something was wrong with her. She had been at BuckHawk for only three days when she went into emergency surgery to save her life. Clearly, this was a life worth saving!

Now, she is one happy and pampered lady — a most magnificent ambassador for her breed. Her early story can be found at Rescued American Pit Bull Terrier. And I promise, when I can get all the new photos sized properly for this site, I will be writing up her entire success story. For now, my internet connection is still too slow. But, I wanted to add this update for you.

This is the adoption photo her family fell in love with.

We are very happy to announce that we have two new adoptions. Blue, our Sheltie, has gone to his new home. Blue came to us by way of a local vet’s clinic. He was abandoned there. When he first joined us, Blue was a very nervous and scared little guy. Since then, he has gained in confidence and trust in the human world. We weren’t sure if Blue would ever be able to be adopted, but we found just the right setting and just the right human to help him continue his road to full trust. While he found the job of keeping the horses away from the fence here at BuckHawk Center, his new home will allow him the job of helping to care for a small herd of goats. BTW: he will also be a spoiled and beloved pet!

Our other adoption is Rudy, the Irish Wolfhound/Border Collie mix who joined us from a similar background as Blue. A different vet, though. Rudy will be making a trip to San Francisco for his new home. He will join a family experienced with large dogs and thrilled to have him as part of their home and their only pet. Due to the issues of coordinating all the travel plans, Rudy will stay with us until late April. Then he will be off in that big bird in the sky on the way to his new home.

A new darling has joined us as well, CueBear, an Akita mix with the most wonderful temperament. More about him, along with photos, will be coming soon!

Such fun stuff going on here at BuckHawk Center. One of our new young labs learned an interesting trick. He learned how to make the kind of jump that took him right over a back fence! Most of the yards for the dogs back up to a pasture and that just doesn’t seem to entice the dogs. They prefer to be at the front of the yards where the humans are. But, this guy quickly discovered how to jump the back fence and work his way under the pasture gate and get to the front!

Such a smart guy he is! But, we were able to halt this little trick by adding a top layer to the fencing across the back. Luckily for us, the weather took a turn to the warm side. We weren’t out there in freezing temps and icy or snowy conditions. We were in a load of mud, though. Not as much fun as dry conditions, but still better.

Now, that sweet lab is safely enclosed in his yard. And he is a sweet guy. Even when he had the freedom, he didn’t wander off. He stayed right in the front, awaiting those times when the humans are around. Then he would come to us to get attention and follow us around as we managed to get his fence fixed.

His whole story, along with the stories of several other of our labs, can be found at Black Labrador Retrievers to the Rescue. Take a look. Every time you visit that page or any of our pages, it helps BuckHawk Center earn just a bit more for the animals. So visit, and visit often.

We are so very thankful for the help of Paula from LakeErieArtists. She has generously agreed to help us get things in order and work on the improvement of our site. This kind of help is such a benefit to us. My profound apologies to Paula for all the bugging of her I have done and will do, I’m sure! Be sure to check out her site as a way to help us thank her.

Please keep visiting, even bookmark this site, so you can see the many wonderful and new things that we will be doing in the future. OK, one of those things will be to get the subscribe function working so that you get updates!

Also, feel free to follow along on our blog – Reflections of An Animal Rescuer. There you will learn more about what life is like as a rescuer.

In the meantime, here is some information about our animal rescue center:

The BuckHawk Center, Inc., is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Established in 2002, we are located in the Ozark Mountains in South Central Missouri. We rescue animals in need, mostly dogs, provide veterinarian care and basic training, and coordinate adoptions.

When a dog is not a good candidate for adoption, due to age, health conditions, or temperament, they become permanent residents of BuckHawk Center. Each resident is treated as one of our own pets. Their forever home is the Center.

The BuckHawk Center is supported through donations from generous people like you.
