The Washington Wizards suffered thru a 26-56 campaign last season. The Gilbert Arenas fiasco hung over the organization the whole season. Despite the debacle, Ernie Grunfeld and Flip Saunders were allowed to keep their jobs. Grunfeld got lucky as the ping-pong balls gave Washington the number 1 overall pick. Enter John Wall as the new franchise player for the Wizards. Kirk Hinrich was brought in to provide stability in the backcourt. Javale McGee is a very active athlete that needs to improve in strong-side defense. Developing touch around the basket would also be an area of improvement. Al Thornton is a solid forward that is able to score. Former Buck Yi Jianlian brings perimeter scoring, but lacks the toughness to play as a starting forward. Assistant coach Sam Cassell is going to have to work with Nick Young on shot selection. Andray Blatche has come a long way from being a 2nd round pick in 2005. Blatche averaged 14.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. From February until the end of the season in only 3 games did he score less than double-figures. He had surgery in June for a broken foot. Gilbert Arenas and Josh Howard are still on the roster. I wouldn’t want those two having any sort of influence over John Wall or Andray Blatche. Howard is coming off an ACL injury so his status for the upcoming season is unknown. Washington has some good young core pieces to build around and should win more games than last season.

The New Jersey Nets finished the 2009-2010 season at 12-70 a mere 49 games back of top seeded Cleveland Cavaliers. The truck was backed up clearing out the roster and coaching staff. Avery Johnson is now the man in charge with former Bucks Sam Mitchell and Larry Krystkowiak serving as assistant coaches. The Nets lost out in the lottery dropping to the 3rd spot with the selection of Georgia Tech freshman forward Derrick Favors. The team also was able to pick up additional size up front with Troy Murphy in a blockbuster 4-team trade. Anthony Morrow was brought in to score. How the minutes get split between Morrow, Travis Outlaw, and Terrence Williams will be something to watch for early in the season. Jordan Farmar will help off the bench as a point guard. Farmar’s arrival could allow Harris to play some off the ball. The Nets could turn things around this upcoming season because like the Bucks they have a talented young point guard and young center to build around. Devin Harris and Brook Lopez should be able to take another step forward with Johnson at the helm. While I don’t see the Nets making it to the postseason it’s reasonable to expect them to win around 30 games this season.

Michael Redd has $18.3 Million reasons to sit out the upcoming 2010-2011 NBA season. The Bucks have completely moved with a filled out roster. Redd isn’t expected back until February, but where would he fit in? Unless a serious injury happens to John Salmons, Carlos Delfino, or Chris Douglas-Roberts there’s no reason at this point to have Redd play. Redd used to be the face of the franchise and the big cheese in the locker room. That mantle now belongs to Brandon Jennings and Andrew Bogut. One school of thought was that GM John Hammond would pair one of his young forwards with Redd to bring back something that could help this year in return. When you look at the Bucks roster, depth isn’t a problem. The Bucks should just sit on Redd this year and reap the benefits of salary relief. His deal could be a valuable trade chip at the deadline to add a missing piece. There’s nothing worth that salary relief that’s available at this point of the offseason.

Redd could make a comeback like Bernard King did in the late 1980’s with the Bullets. King’s physical skills were diminished, but he knew how to score. Regardless of physical decline Redd can still shoot from the perimeter. He could play as a backup swingman that provides scoring off the bench. A sabbatical in 2010-2011 could prolong his career. Getting right physically should be his main priority for this season. It’s tough to swallow your pride as your team has moved on.

When the Bucks signed Keyon Dooling to be a backup point guard for Brandon Jennings his skill set wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. A veteran ball handling point guard that is a terrific free throw shooter is what I desired. Enter Earl Boykins into the fray on a 1-year deal. Boykins has played all over the NBA because he’s a solid veteran role player. The ability to run the pick-and-roll with the second unit is valuable. End game situations are where Boykins value comes to the forefront with his ball handling ability and free throw shooting. Salting away close games is where a player like Boykins will be able to show his value. Career averages of 1.2 turnovers per contest and 88% from the charity stripe present why he was signed.

The blockbuster 4-team trade involving the Pacers, Nets, Hornets, and Rockets will have a resounding effect across the NBA. Each team had a motive for the transaction; however in this piece I’ll touch on how it impacts the Pacers. Indiana has been quiet for much of this offseason, but acquired their point guard for the next decade in Darren Collison along with an athletic perimeter defender James Posey. The Pacers gave away Troy Murphy’s big contract. I’m glad to see Murphy leaving because he regularly gave the Bucks fits with his ability to rebound and shoot from the perimeter.

Now with Collison in the fold teams across the Eastern Conference will learn the merits of this emerging point guard. Pairing Collison with Danny Granger, Paul George, Brandon Rush, and Roy Hibbert gives the Pacers a young core to build around. Point guard has been a revolving door for Indiana for much of the last decade. Collison cemented his studliness with Chris Paul’s injury averaging 18.8 points, 9.1 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in 37 starts. The Darren Collison-Brandon Jennings matchups this season should make for must see TV. In an early season matchup against the Bucks November 25th Collison had 18 points, 8 asssits, and 7 boards in 36 minutes in a 102-99 Hornets win over the Bucks. On February 24th, Collison had 22 points and 9 assists in 46 minutes of a Bucks 115-95 win over the Hornets.

Here is how the trade broke down New Orleans sent Darren Collison and James Posey to Indiana. Indiana moved Troy Murphy to New Jersey. Trevor Ariza goes from Houston to New Orleans. Courtney Lee went from New Jersey to Houston.

When you look at the 2010-2011 Milwaukee Bucks roster as it’s currently constructed you can see how the rotations may set up. Your starting lineup is Brandon Jennings, John Salmons, Corey Maggette, Drew Gooden, and Andrew Bogut. Carlos Delfino, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Keyon Dooling, Ersan Ilyasova, and Luc Mbah a Moute are your bench. How much Larry Sanders, Tiny Gallon, Darington Hobson, and Jon Brockman break into the lineup remains to be seen. Who is your backup center out of this collection of players? Drew Gooden, Tiny Gallon, and Jon Brockman are guys that could see minutes in the post if something were to happen to Andrew Bogut. 2nd round pick Jerome Jordan from Tulsa is a player I was interested in seeing, but was moved to the Knicks. If something were to happen to Bogut, is a legitimate post player on the roster?

Taking a look at the free agency pool presents a long list of candidates that don’t get me too excited. Kwame Brown, Primoz Brezec, Adonal Foyle (I call him Aluminum Foyle), Steven Hunter, DJ Mbenga, Rasho Nesterovic, Patrick O’Bryant, and Etan Thomas are looking for work. Height is the best thing these guys have to offer. Contributions on the defensive end and the ability to set screens have kept these guys in the Association. However, I wouldn’t want to replace a player on the current Milwaukee roster with any of these veteran bigs.

Joe Alexander was the 8th overall pick by the Bucks in the 2008 NBA draft and is currently looking for work. Before the 2009-2010 season the Bucks decided against picking up his 3rd year option and he was later traded along with Hakim Warrick to the Bulls for John Salmons and draft choices. In 67 NBA games during 2 years, Alexander looked completely lost. His basketball IQ was highly questionable. The West Virginia product didn’t do himself any favors in the D-League or in the Summer League with the Bulls.

If Alexander could do it again would he have stayed in school? His agent is going to have a tough time selling Alexander to teams. Alexander is a very athletic forward that is able to utilize his athleticism to mix it up inside. In a perfect world he’ll bring energy and scoring off the bench if foul trouble is avoided. A good veteran assistant that can teach him how to properly play the game of basketball is ideal. Pete Carril of the Kings, the Nuggets Tim Grgurich, or Dwayne Casey of the Mavericks would be guys that maybe could help Alexander turn his career around. I’d get in touch with the recently retired Dick Harter to see if I could get some private workouts before auditioning for prospective employers.

Some big name players that are reaching the end of the line are having a difficult time finding employment. Shaquille O’Neal, Tracy McGrady, and Allen Iverson have combined for 33 All-Star selections yet remain unemployed. The Bucks did a lot of their spending early in the free agent process. The Michael Redd money prohibits them from being able to make another big move. If Milwaukee had the money would any of these players fit with the Bucks?

Shaq can still contribute at age 38, but is he willing to just blend into a team? How many bridges has he burned across the NBA at this point? Shaq could fit for the Bucks as a backup to Andrew Bogut in the post. The championship experience could be beneficial for a team that’s never been there before. Ideally I’d like Shaq to serve as a voice between the coaches and players. Unfortunately, Shaq may not have that type of personality. A better behaved Shaq may have already been employed.

The Tracy McGrady Operation game should be scaring teams away. He’s an old 31 in terms of NBA years. He played 71 games during the 2006-07 campaign with the Rockets and has never played a full 82 game slate. T-Mac looked like he hadn’t fully recovered from knee surgery in a late season showing with the Knicks. Will he accept a lesser role with a new team? I could see him being a scorer off the bench on a cheap one-year deal. The Bucks have enough guard/forwards that McGrady isn’t needed. Chris Douglas-Roberts would lose minutes if McGrady was brought aboard. McGrady’s ability to get to the free throw line would be valuable for the Bucks. We’ll see if the market continues to be stagnant for T-Mac.

Allen Iverson is also looking to resume his career after leaving the game twice to deal with a myriad of personal problems. The health problems of his four-year old daughter are completely understandable. The other off the court issues are compounded with the fact that Iverson has lost a couple of steps. 3 games with the Grizzles and 25 games with the Sixers were difficult to watch. I would cringe at having him near my young franchise players. Iverson had a hall of fame career, but I wouldn’t be willing to take a chance on him for any price.

Luke Ridnour’s signing with Minnesota signaled an end to Ramon Sessions time with the team. Sessions, Ryan Hollins, and a future 2nd round pick have been traded from the Timberwolves to the Cavs for Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair. As a member of the Bucks in 2008 Sessions had a 24 assist game against the Bulls. He received extended playing time in 2008-2009, but was unable to secure a future with the team. Many fans were angered when Sessions was allowed to sign with the Timberwolves. The Bucks knew Sessions wasn’t as good of a player as Brandon Jennings or Luke Ridnour. Minnesota figured out that Ridnour is a better player than Sessions as well. Last year with the Wolves, he played in all 82 games with just 1 start. The Nevada product has the ability to dribble penetrate and set up teammates are his best assets. Perimeter shooting and defensive liabilities keep him for being a starting NBA point guard. Cleveland is going to give Sessions the opportunity to prove people wrong.

Former Bucks player and head coach Larry Krystkowiak has been named to Avery Johnson’s coaching staff in New Jersey. Krystkowiak coaching tenure with the Bucks was disastrous. After Terry Stotts was fired, Krystkowiak took over during the 2006-2007 season and led the Bucks to a 5-13 record. 2007-2008 saw a 24-45 record and he was shown the door. Two successful seasons in college at his alma mater Montana helped Krystkowiak get a job with Milwaukee. In 2006, his Grizzles upset Nevada in the first-round of the tournament. Kryskowiak was overmatched to be a head coach with the Bucks. I’m glad to see he’s going to get chance to polish his resume with the Nets.
