If you've been following my adventures, you already know I'm always on the hunt for the best eats wherever I go. Now that I'm based in Batangas, that mission has gotten even more exciting, because I finally get to explore the food scene right in my own backyard (literally!): Cuenca.

Cuenca is best known as the "Home of the Bakers." But trust me, there's so much more to it than warm pandesal and ensaymada. This small but lively municipality is packed with cozy cafes, hearty Batangueño comfort food, and a surprising mix of local and international flavors. So grab a snack (you'll want one after this) and let's dig into the budget-friendly spots I've personally tried around my town!

LUIS BAKERY

Address: National Highway, Poblacion 1, Cuenca, Batangas

Parking: Plenty of space (dedicated parking for customers)

You really can't visit Cuenca without stopping by for its breads and pastries, and Luis Bakery should be first on your list. Their cheese rolls give Mary Grace a run for its money (minus the price tag), and their ensaymadas and chocolate dedication cakes hold their own against the likes of Mernel's and Red Ribbon, both in price and flavor. Whenever we have guests over, Luis Bakery treats are always part of the welcome spread, and they make for one of the best pasalubongs you can bring home.

Fun fact: Luis Bakery isn't the only reason Cuenca earned its "Home of the Bakers" title. Rosales Bakery is another local favorite, especially for their Spanish bread (just a tad too sweet for my taste, but still worth a try).

INARAH CAFE

My go-to order here is the passionfruit sparkling drink, their 2-piece special suman (the one drizzled in caramel sauce is a must), and their seriously cheesy fries. It's the kind of place where you can just hang out with friends while soaking in the view of Mt. Maculot. Great vibes all around.

BARSOY

We were a bit on the fence after our first (and so far only) visit here. It's a pay-per-order setup, so we tried two dishes: their pinakbet and dinakdakan. The pinakbet leaned a little too mild for our taste, and the dinakdakan had so much mayo mixed in that the usual smoky, tangy flavor, that it got a bit lost underneath it all. With that said, Barsoy has since gotten a facelift, upgrading from an open-air setup to a fully enclosed space that now feels more like an events venue. We're hoping the food has leveled up along with the renovation, and we'd love to give it another shot soon.

DREAMBAKESCO PIZZA

We're big fans of Dreambake's pizzas, especially their buy-one-take-one deals. The dough comes out wonderfully chewy with that golden, oven-baked crust that tells you it's the real deal. They've got a wide range of flavors to fit different budgets, whether you're a student or just craving pizza on a weeknight. Our usual orders are the beef & bacon and the pepperoni. Bonus points too for Sir Eugene, the baker and owner himself, whom we got to meet in person one night. Super friendly and accommodating.

FELIPO

We've ordered from Felipo a handful of times, usually while waiting for our car to finish up at the carwash nearby. Their halo-halo was just okay, felt like something was missing. We've since skipped their Pan-fried Chicken Pesto after the chicken and pasta came out a bit too oily and the bread was tough to chew through. Their calamares, though, were fried just right. But the real star for us is the Spanish-style Tuna Fettuccine. It's so consistently good that these days, it's the only thing we order whenever we swing by.

KIKS KITCHENETTE

Nothing fancy here, but they do have an extensive menu with a mix of Filipino and Indian-inspired dishes. We tried the tapsilog (the beef was a little on the chewy side, and the rice a bit oily) and their chicken biryani. The biryani itself was a little mild-tasting for our liking, though the accompanying sauces really helped bring it to life; we genuinely enjoyed those. Having tried a lot of authentic biryani during our years living in Dubai, this version still has some room to grow. But it's not a bad option if you're craving something different in Cuenca.

OASIS AUTO CARE & CAFE

Parking: Fits 3–4 cars if not full with carwash customers

Oasis is honestly a one-stop-shop. We've had our car washed here plenty of times, and the best part is you get to relax at their in-house cafe while you wait. The food genuinely holds up, too. Our favorites include the sardine and olive pasta (a bit oily, but still so good), the tapsilog (great flavor and even better plating), and the passionfruit calamansi tea, which has become my usual order (shoutout to my favorite barista, Jaja, who already knows exactly what drink I want before I even ask). Their specialty coffee drinks are also worth trying, especially the pinipig crisp latte. Prices run a little higher across the board, but worth every peso.

They also have a water refilling station. We get our water from them (twice a week), but we've stopped ordering since we haven't been able to reach their usual delivery guy lately. Not sure why, but it might just be the distance from our place. Wish we knew the reason why!

SUSAN'S EATERY

We turn to Susan's Eatery on days when cooking at home just isn't happening. The prices run a bit high for the portions, so it's not an everyday thing for us. But their fried lumpiang gulay, adobong pusit, and specialty palabok are genuinely worth it. We usually order their palabok platter whenever we have visitors over, and it's always a hit. At ₱850, it easily feeds 8 to 10 people, which makes it a solid choice for gatherings. The owner, Sir Jordan, is also incredibly accommodating, even with very tight, same-day orders.

CAFE RAYA

The food and drinks here were fairly average, nothing that really stood out. The beef tapa was on the dry side and a bit tough to chew, while the luncheon meat was decent but nothing memorable. But what really makes Cafe Raya worth the visit is the rooftop view of Mt. Maculot. It's a lovely spot to unwind with a drink and good company.

CASA ALEJANDRO

The food here left us a bit underwhelmed, especially considering the price point. The view, on the other hand, was lovely. So what did we order? Well, we tried their ensaladang talong, which tasted fine despite not looking too fresh. We also got some grilled squid, which was fairly tough and swimming in more sauce than it needed (though a generous serving size). My husband ordered sweet and sour pork with rice, which sadly, arrived a little soggy. Overall, it was a decent enough experience, but not one we're in a rush to repeat. The staff, though, deserve a mention. They were warm and attentive throughout our visit.

Two weekends ago, my husband, six friends, and I found exactly that kind of joy at Khailani Beach Resort in Calatagan, Batangas. If a quick, heartwarming getaway filled with laughter, relaxation, and poolside fun sounds like your kind of summer plan, our story might just light the way.

The Road Less Traveled — Literally!

Starting from Cuenca, the drive to Khailani clocked in at just about two hours—not too long, just enough time for playlists and snacks. But here’s the thing: the last 30 minutes? It was a bit of an off-road adventure in itself. Once you see the green sign (with several resort names printed) at a Y-junction, turn left, then take a right just before a humble BBQ stand. The resort’s signage is non-existent, so expect a few minor detours. Anyway, it’s those little quirks that make the journey part of the story rather than a frustrating drive.

Our Beachside Nest: The Garden Annex

We stayed in the Garden Annex, a charming two-story house that was a dream for our group of eight. At an introductory rate of ₱10,000 (down from ₱12,000), it served as our perfect poolside haven.

Spacious and thoughtfully laid out, the first floor features an air-conditioned living room equipped with a videoke setup—which, trust me, became the night’s highlight—along with some portable fans and a cozy single room for anyone craving a moment of solitude.

The kitchen came well-stocked with essentials: a ref, rice cooker, toaster, pots, plates, knives, pans, utensils and a gas stove. Oh, and they generously provided a gallon of drinking water. However, you may want to bring your own dishwashing soap and sponge, as those items are not included. Toiletries like toilet paper, shampoo, and bath gel, thankfully, were all on hand.

Upstairs, a four-queen-bed room, cooled by air-conditioning, gave each pair enough space to stretch out.

Both floors have its own private shower and toilet, which meant no lines or waiting—a small but wonderful luxury when traveling in a group.

Poolside Chill and Beachside Thrills

Speaking of the pool—it might not be Olympic-sized, but it was just right for our group. Big enough to swim or lounge comfortably, and at night, the pool lit up with color-changing lights and a gentle fountain, creating an almost magical vibe. It made outdoor hangs a must, even after the sun sets.

Adding to the good times, the Garden Annex includes a BBQ grill and a few bean bags—a perfect setup for evening feasts. There was even a clothes rack handy for dripping wet swimwear after beach walks. And the beach itself? Just an easy 8 to 10-minute stroll away, made even more welcoming by one of the friendly staff members who accompanied my friends (I stayed in, though). Booking with Khailani grants all checked-in guests complimentary beach access for one day.

Reveling in Home-cooked Meals and Good Company

We delighted in the simple pleasures of sharing home-cooked meals around the dining table, exchanging stories, and laughing until our sides hurt.

Booking online was straightforward as well, with a clear contract and house rules to ensure everything ran smoothly. Additionally, there is a ₱2,000 security deposit, which was returned upon check-out.

Heads-Up Before You Go

Like any adventure, our trip had its quirks. For one, Khailani comes with its own “buzzing” local mascot—plenty of flies (bangaws) who don’t quite take the hint to keep their distance. Also, after your free beach day, access on subsequent days will require an extra fee (P100/pax), so it pays to plan accordingly.

If you also rely on Google Maps or Waze alone, be ready for a little trial-and-error on the tricky final road stretch—but it’s part of the charm, really.

We weren't just looking for a meal; we were looking for a celebration of being healthy again. Here’s the breakdown of our 10/10 experience:

Josephine’s Signature Salad (PHP 298)

We kicked things off with their best-seller. It’s a refreshing mix of crisp lettuce, sliced apples, celery, and grapes. The light seasoning helped elevate the flavors. It’s a nice, low-fat starter that’s easily shareable for two.

My husband went straight for the Josephine Steak. For under PHP 800, he got a thick, juicy ribeye cooked to a perfect medium-rare. He loves eating steaks, and he noted that it was flavorful enough to enjoy even without the sauce. Plus, the mashed potatoes were the silky, creamy cherry on top.

The Grand Finale: Coffee & Cheesecake

To wrap up, he enjoyed a slice of Basque Burnt Cheesecake (PHP 108) and a Hot Americano (PHP 105). While the cake was standard, the coffee was the real star. It was perfectly brewed and a great palate cleanser.

The Bittersweet Truth: An Honest Seda Manila Bay Review and Staycation Experience

After a rough couple of months battling sickness—from December to mid-January—I found myself desperate for a change of scenery. My husband’s birthday was approaching, and so I thought about taking a breather and celebrating his milestone with a short staycation in Manila. We decided to book a two-night retreat at Seda Manila Bay, hoping for comfort, relaxation, and maybe a little healing for our tired bodies.

First Impressions Matter!

We've stayed at Seda Nuvali before, so I’m already familiar with the spacious layouts of the brand, and Seda Manila Bay did not disappoint. Our room was large with a view of the busy street below. The view wasn’t exactly soothing to look at, but I liked the openness of it after feeling cooped up and sick for weeks.

Also, one of the first things that I noticed was how conveniently located it was. Seda Manila Bay is a few steps away from Ayala Malls Manila Bay, and the hotel has a private entrance and exit that links to the mall. That was a game-changer for us. So anytime we felt like a snack or needed something quick to eat, the mall was just a few steps away. Parqal was also nearby, giving us plenty of options should we want to explore.

Comfort Amidst Discomfort

Honestly, I was still suffering from an uncomfortable, unexplained epigastric pain (it wasn’t until after this trip that I learned I would need a laparoscopic cholecystectomy.) I was just glad that those two days were free from any major attacks. My body was giving me warning signs, but the mini comforts that Seda provided made things a little bit easier.

Anyway, the room was thoughtfully appointed: a work desk that I could use to catch up on emails, lots of charging outlets, a smart TV, reliable WiFi and a nice king bed with soft pillows. The only downside? The lighting was a bit too dim for our liking, especially at night. Just a small detail, but it did affect our overall comfort.

Despite that, one consistent highlight was the complimentary water. Glass bottles were refilled anytime you requested them, which felt both eco-friendly and indulgent. The catch, however, was that getting extra water wasn’t as seamless—calls to reception often went unanswered, and I had to go down myself to request refills, which wasn’t ideal given my state.

Amenities and Atmosphere

The hotel is impressively large, and the air conditioning was a dream—cool corridors and rooms made for a refreshing escape from Manila’s humidity.

While we didn’t feel up to swimming in the pool or playing mini-golf, we did spend time by the pool, which sits up on a roof deck. Instead of laps, we dipped our toes in the water, letting our conversations drift from future plans to reflections on our marriage. Stargazing together, even for a short while, was grounding.

Our T&B was another highlight. Hot water was always available, and the complimentary toiletries were thoughtful—no scrambling for forgotten toothbrushes! The towels were fresh, and the bathrobes were so soft and comfortable that I slept in mine both nights.

Our Dining Experience

Breakfast was complimentary, and while the spread wasn’t vast, I found enough options that agreed with my sensitive stomach (loved their hot taho!). Each meal, I’d use a hot compress on my tummy afterwards, grateful that I could eat without distress.

The waitstaff were mostly friendly and helpful, but there was one small problem: one server, who looked sick, was blowing his nose behind the kitchen sink, which some guests could still see. The incident felt unhygienic, especially in a dining area. I hope it’s something management addresses whenever their team members feel sick but still need to report to work.

Seda's Service and Staff

One area where Seda Manila Bay could improve is their customer service. The reception staff seemed overworked and not particularly welcoming. Calls would often go unanswered, and there was an overall tired vibe. In contrast, the waitstaff at breakfast brought more warmth to the experience.

Parking was another plus—it’s complimentary at the mall’s basement, which made coming and going a breeze.

Will we come back?

Seda Manila Bay wasn't at par for the price we paid, so the general impression just wasn’t for us. We did love the convenience, space, and amenities. But it did not compare to our previous stay in Seda Nuvali, mainly because of the attitude of the staff and some service hiccups. These affected our overall experience and satisfaction, like the delays in room service and slow-to-respond front desk staff. If there is ever going to be another Seda getaway, Nuvali would still be our top pick.

Despite my health struggles, I am grateful for those two days of peace, comfort, and meaningful conversations with my husband. This stay may not have been perfect, but it gave us the breather we needed before the next set of challenges.

I cherish birthdays not for the gifts, but for the rare chance to be with those who make life meaningful. This year, I turned 42, and it felt different. I wanted something comforting, something extraordinary. So, I chose to celebrate at Marahuyo Restaurant in Mataas na Kahoy, Batangas. What followed was a day of laughter, flavors, and gratitude, along with the stunning backdrop of Taal Lake.

Back to a Place Filled with Memories

Marahuyo is not just a restaurant; it is a trip down memory lane. My husband and I have eaten here once, when we celebrated our wedding anniversary at the nearby Eco Hotel. The view of Taal Lake was lovely, and the staff was very warm. However, the food did not leave a positive impression. But I thought, let's give them another chance. Thankfully, they came through! The second time around, we weren't disappointed.

Food That Hits the Spot

Food is love made visible, and our meal was as enjoyable as the people we shared it with. This is what we ordered:

Baluk Buong Manok (P740): tasty whole fried chicken, crisp and golden, served with potato wedges and homemade gravy. Every bite was elevated comfort food.
Gising-Gising (Php290): a bright green bean dish cooked in coconut milk. Simple. Fresh. Addictively savory. Everyone, surprisingly, loved this vegetable dish.
Deep-fried Tawilis (local: Php 260, seasonal): The crunch of this freshly caught lake fish, with sinamak vinegar, was downright good. A true Batangas treat that never disappoints.
Sinigang na Tadyang (P540): These tender organic pork ribs are served in a tangy kamias broth, accompanied by watermelon, gabi, and talong. This dish was my favorite! They all tasted of home, with a hint of creativity, reflecting the chef's unique approach to traditional flavors and presentation.

Breathtaking Views that Bring Taal Lake to Life

While the food was good, it was the view that really made Marahuyo special. Taal Lake was glittering in front of us, and every moment was more special as we were eating. It was like being in a live painting.

The Sweetest Surprise

Birthdays feel incomplete without a surprise, and my friends did it in the most heartwarming way. But the best part of the day was seeing them smiling, enjoying their company more than the cakes I received.

Now that I'm based in Batangas, my mission has become even more exciting: to explore the incredible food scene right in my backyard. And where better to start than Lipa City?

Lipa, often hailed as the "Home of Kapeng Barako," is a bustling city that has become a foodie haven. It’s not just about its famous lomi. It’s a vibrant tapestry of traditional Batangueño comfort food, trendy cafes, and a surprising array of international flavors. This article serves as your budget-friendly guide to the must-try spots I’ve discovered in Lipa. So, get ready to delight your taste buds!

Lomi Legends: Where Batangas' Iconic Noodle Soup Shines

You can't visit Batangas without indulging in a bowl of lomi. This dish is an institution here, and I've discovered a couple of places that serve it exceptionally well.

Liam's Lomi House

Address: Recenos Compound, Gen. Luna St., Lipa City

Hours: Mon-Sun 6:00 AM–7:30 PM

Parking: Plenty of spots

Liam's Lomi House serves up a flavor-packed lomi, featuring a rich, thick broth, generous toppings, and a perfect savory balance. There might not be any photos from our first visit, but we've definitely sampled their lomi and loved their version.

But don’t stop at the lomi! Their pork barbecue is also a standout, being meaty, tender, and marinated with a savory blend. We also tried their special fried rice, which comes with two pieces of chicken (perfect for 2-3 people); it was also packed with flavor. However, the sizzling sisig was a bit bland for our taste. It probably just needed some freshly cut onions and chili to elevate the dish.

TIP: To eat lomi like a true local, grab some sliced onions, sili (chili), calamansi, and a dash of soy sauce. Mix it all in and prepare for a flavor explosion!

Chibong's Lomi House

Address: Purok 1, Barangay Talisay, Lipa City

Hours: Mon-Sun 7:00 AM-10:00 PM

Parking: Plenty of spots

If you're looking for great value, Chibong's is the place to go. Their Chami is both filling and flavorful, while the pork BBQ is generously portioned. Just a heads up: it tends to be on the sweeter side, making it a great choice if you enjoy sweet barbecue.

One of the best perks? They provide free Barako coffee and water! They also have a spacious dining area, so you won't have to wait long for a table.

Our total bill, which included a tall soda and three cups of white rice, was just under P400. Definitely value for money!

Beyond the Bowl: Lipa's Unique Bites and Local Delights

Lipa's culinary scene features more than just lomi. There are several unique food finds that you definitely need to try!

Lipeno Fried Siopao (very straightforward, you won't miss it!)

Address: Recenos Compound, Gen. Luna St., Lipa City

Parking: Plenty of spots

This eatery features white walls, bright red signage, and a simple, clean design that caught our attention. The price per siopao is P65, so we decided to give it a try. The result? It was just okay in terms of flavor. Even when fried, the bread remains soft enough to bite into and isn’t overly greasy. However, the filling could use some more meat and seasoning.

The Square Lipa: A Modern Hub for Eats and Treats

This location serves as a good hub for various food joints, catering to diverse tastes. Despite the limited parking, a spacious dining area is available on the second floor, directly above Nitoro.

Nitoro Cold Brew

We didn't sample their nitro-based brews. However, I truly enjoyed their cherry coke-infused drink. I recommend trying it for a refreshing and fizzy break.

Frankie's Bourbon Burger

My husband thought the namesake's burger was a bit small and lacked flavor. Thankfully, I enjoyed my Ultimate Burger order, which was packed with a thick patty and lots of veggies (though messy to eat). Their jalapeño poppers and fries were also tasty!

International Flavors: Lipa’s Global Eats

Lipa's food scene isn't just about local fare. It's also embraced international cuisine with open arms.

Frasch Lipa

Address: Commercial Area, Brgy. Sico, Lipa City (enter Petron Along Highway Base View Homes Gate 2)

Hours: Mon-Fri 11:30 AM–10:00 PM, Sat-Sun 11:00 AM–10:00 PM

Parking: Limited to side street parking

Frasch offers decent food, but it can be on the pricey side. My husband and I each ordered a BBQ skewer—one with chicken, and the other with beef—served alongside Patatas Bravas. He also sampled their homemade Sansrival, which was just average tasting.

Prism Restaurant Cafe

Address: Bagong Pook, Lipa City,

The Paella Valenciana here is good for one person. We would have enjoyed it more if some of the rice hadn’t been overcooked or burned. However, the baked salmon was a definite highlight! Although the serving size was small, it perfectly satisfied my appetite. The combination of salmon with spinach, mornay sauce, tomatoes, and Queso de Bola was so delicious (chef's kiss!). Their Americano also comes in a large mug, which is both strong and good.

Mumtaz, Lipa

Parking: Ample space by the lot to their right

We dined in and tried the Mixed Grill Platter, which included Joojeh Kebab, Beef Kofta Kebab, and Chicken Tikka Kebab served on basmati rice. While the chicken tikka was surprisingly flavorful, the other kebabs were unfortunately dry, and the rice was tough to chew, indicating it may not have been fresh. We also ordered chicken shawarma to go and were disappointed by the minimal amount of meat filling.

Casa Marikit Ristorante Italiano

Address: Banay-Banay, Mataas Na Kahoy (opposite Lipa Air Force driving range)

While the dishes are on the pricier side, we enjoyed most of our orders. My husband found his Bavette All Amatriciana good, but he felt it lacked flavor (it could be better). I, on the other hand, loved my dish. I ordered the Ravioli Al Salmone, which was delicious and creamy. The salmon was not briny at all, even with the caviar topping, and the cream paired perfectly with it. I also loved the Insalata Di Rucola, which featured gorgonzola cheese, toasted walnuts, fresh pear, and a generous amount of arugula. It was incredibly refreshing! Oh, and their Tiramisu is also a must-try!

The staff here was friendly as well! I accidentally bumped my hand on the table, and when I requested ice, they went above and beyond by creating a makeshift ice pack wrapped in cling wrap. Talk about going the extra mile!

Lucia's Cafe

Lucia's Cafe has become our go-to restaurant. We always recommend it to family and friends because the food is affordable, and the ambiance is perfect for hosting intimate gatherings. I usually order their cheesy baked salmon, which is pleasantly mild in flavor and pairs well with mashed potatoes. My husband's recent order, the Bacon, Egg, and Waffles, was just average. The bacon was a bit tough to chew.

They also have pastries, and the sans rival we tried last time was a generous slice. Their black coffee is also served in a big mug.

The restaurant offers ample parking and spacious dining areas. Just a heads-up: be sure to apply mosquito repellent from late afternoon to nighttime (there can be a lot of them during these hours).

Antonino's Pizzeria

Parking: Ample slots

The dishes here are flavorful, generous in serving, and beautifully presented. Their pizza is oven-baked, some of their vegetables come directly from their herb garden, and the food is always freshly prepared. My favorites are the Aglio Olio pasta and the pepperoni pizza.

They have outdoor seating, as well as an air-conditioned room that can accommodate about 30 people. My friends and I had our pre-Christmas lunch here last year, and they loved the ambiance.

Discovering Indonesian Comfort Food at Warung Kapitolyo, Pasig

If you ever find yourself hungry in Pasig, do yourself a favor and check out Warung in Kapitolyo. This cozy restaurant serves authentic Indonesian cuisine, and honestly, I’m still thinking about all the dishes we tried and tasted!

Warm Greetings and a Homey Setting

Warung is tucked inside a gated property, which gives it a sense of privacy and quiet, even though you’re still in the city. They have their own parking area, but there are only a few slots, so just a heads-up if you’re planning to drive there. The restaurant is open from 11 am to 2 pm and reopens from 5 pm to 8 pm on weekdays, so make sure to plan your visit around those hours. We managed to make it just in time for lunch.

Right after we placed our orders, Tita Louh, one of the owners, came over to greet us. She asked if it was our first time, checked if we were comfortable, and genuinely thanked us for coming in. It felt more like visiting a family friend than simply dining out. That kind of genuine hospitality is rare these days, and it instantly made us feel welcome.

The interior of Warung Warung has a cozy, traditional house vibe. And throughout our dining experience, the staff was attentive and friendly. We never had to wait long for anything, and everyone was approachable and helpful.

A Feast of Authentic Indonesian Flavors

Now, on to the food. We started with the Beef Rendang (Php435), which came beautifully plated and smelled incredible. The sauce had a wonderful kick, and the beef was so tender it barely needed chewing. You could easily tell it had been slow-cooked in coconut milk and spices, which made it rich and flavorful. If you’re into bold, spicy dishes, this one is for you.

Next, we tried the Gado-Gado (Php245), a traditional Indonesian vegetable salad with peanut sauce. I was honestly surprised by how much I liked this one. The veggies were crisp and fresh, and the peanut sauce wasn’t too salty or sweet, which was just right. I kept reaching for more because that crunch was so satisfying.

We also ordered the Sate Ayam (Php245), which are marinated chicken skewers grilled over charcoal and served with more of that tasty peanut sauce. The chicken was super tender, packed with flavor, and had a delicious smoky taste from the grill. We wiped the plate clean.

Why We’ll Be Back

Overall, Warung impressed us with its quality, flavors, and warm service. The portions, taste, and experience make the prices more than reasonable. By the time we left, we were full, happy, and already making plans to come back and try more dishes.

Anniversary Escape: From Frustration to Fixes at Villas by Eco Hotels

You know that feeling when you're super excited for a special occasion, and you've already pictured how things would turn out? Well, our weekend getaway at Villas by Eco Hotels certainly started with a few unexpected twists and turns!

The Head-Scratching Welcome (and What Was Missing)

We arrived at the resort with high hopes, ready to celebrate. However, our initial experience was a bit of a head-scratcher. There was no clear reception area. Instead, we checked in at the Baluk-Baluk restaurant, where a small table was set up for quick registrations. It felt a bit disjointed, especially when we later realized the receptionist had moved to Marahuyo Restaurant, which was quite a distance from our room: Lakeview Room 5.

This particular room had a few quirks that quickly became concerns. Simple necessities like towels and toilet paper were missing, which we had to ask for. Even more concerning were the transparent sliding doors with gaps in the curtains, leaving us feeling exposed, especially with the public entrance and T&B just right beside us. We even had to resort to using tape to try and close the gaps ourselves after our request for clips wasn't provided.

There were also maintenance concerns. The bathroom sink pipe was leaking. And despite a claim that the AC noise was fixed "from the outside," it was still noticeable (though it toned down). Adding to this, the pool didn't look particularly inviting with its cloudy appearance, and a quick dip left us feeling itchy. It wasn't exactly the refreshing swim we hoped for.

Adding to our initial dismay, our room was in a high-traffic area, right next to a public restroom, main gate, and parking. The constant noise of people and cars, plus the banging of the T&B door, wasn't exactly the serene ambiance we yearned for our anniversary. We tried to inquire about a room upgrade, even willing to pay more, but were told everything was booked, despite seeing what appeared to be empty rooms.

We hoped for a relaxing and romantic start to our pre-wedding anniversary celebration. But frankly, it became frustrating and disappointing.

The Turnaround: Finding Our Poolside Sanctuary

We aired our concerns via Eco Hotels FB messenger, and we appreciated that someone from management responded to my messages. Thankfully, the next day brought a much-needed resolution. The resort manager, Sir Bobby, approached us and offered a transfer to a different room with no added cost. This change made a world of difference!

Lakeview Room 7 boasted better views, and a huge plus for me, a lovely balcony where I could finally relax and read my book in peace. The sounds from the event at Baluk-Baluk restaurant are less intrusive, and we no longer hear the banging of doors from the public restroom or the constant hum of cars and people. The curtains also provided much better privacy. No more worries about passers-by looking inside our room!

While our second room was a definite upgrade, it's worth noting that the property generally could use some upkeep. Lakeview Room 5's T&B had a leaking sink pipe and lacked proper exhaust. In Lakeview Room 7, despite the improved location, the bathroom had some issues, too. There was obvious mold on the shower walls and a distinct stench, likely coming from the drains. We also battled quite a few mosquitoes inside, even with no open windows in the T&B, which was a bit puzzling.

Views to Die For, But Food That Needs Some Love

Marahuyo Restaurant boasts undeniably breathtaking panoramic views. However, while the scenery was a delight, our culinary experience left much to be desired. Considering the prices, the taste and quality of the food didn't quite measure up. The dishes, while presented nicely, often fell short on flavor and temperature.

The chicken fingers with local fries and the pork tapa were on the drier side and served lukewarm, as was the "Bikers Breakfast" with its dry longanisa (though the hashbrown was a definite highlight!). Our breakfast orders were particularly underwhelming, with eggs that looked pre-cooked and toast that was a bit hard and cold upon serving.

Our last breakfast attempt was a bit of a comedy of errors. My husband ordered a 4-egg omelette with mushrooms and cheese. But after a long wait, it arrived with tomatoes and onions instead. We had to cancel the order, but a kind waiter offered a complimentary bowl of Champorado, saying it was an extra serving (was this a good thing? Maybe?). Unfortunately, we couldn't finish it because it had a sour taste that we couldn't quite pinpoint. Was it the milk? The rice used? I don't know.

On the brighter side, we thoroughly enjoyed the fried lumpia, which was served hot and crispy, and my refreshing frozen mint calamansi drink was a winner.

While the restaurant's ambiance and views are a strong draw, the food definitely needs significant improvement to match the overall experience and pricing.

A Mixed Experience

Our pre-anniversary getaway at Villas by Eco Hotels was a tale of two halves. The initial frustrations with the room and service were certainly disappointing, especially for a special occasion. However, the prompt action and the offer of a room transfer by the manager truly turned things around and salvaged our stay.

While the resort grounds and views are undeniably beautiful, some aspects, particularly room maintenance and the restaurant's food quality, need attention. With some improvements in these areas, Villas by Eco Hotels has the potential to be a truly exceptional destination. Despite the initial hiccups, we left with a sense of gratitude for the eventual positive change.

Where I've Been: 14 Countries (Mostly Visa-Free For Filipinos)

[Updated since March 2025] Since 2007, I've tried to explore a new part of the world each year. This personal goal has led to a collection of unforgettable experiences, driven by my deep desire to see new places. To share snippets of my adventures, here’s a rundown on the 14 countries that I’ve been to (mostly visa-free for Philippine passport holders) for the past 18 years.

*The Beginning: Hong Kong & Macau, 2007

My first international trip was to Hong Kong and Macau. Armed with free maps, my cousin and I navigated the busy streets, amazed by the efficient subway and bus systems. We went up to The Peak, enjoyed the view from the Sky Terrace (360 viewing deck), and discovered a hidden cathedral near Queen’s Road. The Central-Mid-Levels Escalator, the longest escalator in the world, moved us through the city's lively center. Victoria Harbour shone, with its iconic junk boats sailing peacefully, and the Avenue of Stars celebrated movie legends. Lan Kwai Fong buzzed with nightlife. Plus, a short ferry ride to Macau introduced us to the grand Venetian Hotel, where we briefly tried the slot machines.

Before the pandemic, I returned to Hong Kong in 2019 via Dubai. The city's familiar energy was comforting. The mix of old and new, the sound of local conversations, and the delicious smell of street food reminded me why I loved this city. It was a brief but special visit, a moment of normalcy before the world changed.

*Singapore: A Frequent Destination (2008, 2011, 2018, 2023)

Singapore, a city I've visited many times, has a special charm. In 2008, the F1 season was close, though we arrived a week too early. But the good part about it was that we saw the actual tracks and sidelines without interruption. We also explored the local Science Discovery Centre, experienced the cold at Snow City, and saw wild animals at the Night Safari. The city's malls, from Causeway Point to Takashimaya, were also great for shopping.

2011, we finally went to Universal Studios Singapore, saw the impressive Marina Bay Sands, and the modern Esplanade and Helix Bridge.

Returning in 2018 meant reconnecting with family (my husband's side), and in 2023 we spent a full month there, finally staying one night at Marina Bay Sands.

*Bangkok and Pattaya, Thailand, 2009: A Birthday Trip

My best friend and I celebrated her birthday in Bangkok, experiencing the lively atmosphere of Khao San Road. From the Grand Palace to Wat Po, we enjoyed the city’s cultural richness with the help of Great Bangkok Travel and Co. Night markets were also full of life, offering many souvenirs and street food. And a trip to Pattaya showed us the city’s unique character and sparkling gem galleries.

*Hong Kong, Macau, and Shenzhen, China, 2010: Three Times the Fun

Revisiting Hong Kong and Macau in 2010 with my boyfriend (now husband) and best friend was twice the fun. I was able to bring them to some of the sites that I’ve been to, and others more, which they equally enjoyed. Plus, our accommodation, Anne Black Guesthouse, was just a 10-minute walk to the Yau Ma Tei Station.

Some of the places that we explored were the IFC mall, The Landmark, The Galleria, Prince’s Building and Alexandra House. While it wasn't my first time to see the Peak, it was my first time to enter the Madame Tussaud Wax Museum, which housed a lot of influential figures.

Of course, visiting Hong Kong will not be the same without doing some shopping. We went to explore the areas of Queens Road Central & Des Voeux Central where we found the best deals from H & M, Ray-Ban, Esprit and RVCA. We also had dinner at a hawker stall in Stanley Street, had drinks at Lan Kwai Fong, and shopped some more in Mongkok and Argyle Street.

We also tried the Ngong Ping 360 cable car ride, got to experience the Walking w/Buddha and Monkey’s Tale tours, and the Ngong Ping Village Sightseeing tour, where the Giant Buddha was located.

We also allotted an entire day to explore Shenzhen, which we reached via MTR to LO WU (HK)/Luohu (Shenzhen border). We transited to Shenzhen with a group that shared only one visa.

While on this short trip, we were able to experience the Jade and Pearl Market Tour, got to sample some local delicacies from a few Chinese shops, and made a final stop at the Window of the World theme park (famous for its miniature attractions). We then ended the day by crossing the border and made it in time for the Symphony of Lights Show at Victoria Harbour.

My cousin’s film premiere at the Jeonju International Film Festival provided a unique opportunity to explore South Korea. We wandered through Cinema Street, admired the traditional architecture of Geaksa House and Bukchon Hanok Village, and indulged in the hearty flavors of Samgyeopsal, Dakgalbi, and Gamjatang.

*Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, 2012: Saigon's Allure

Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City, captivated us with its blend of history and modernity. If you're looking for cheap finds and delicious street food, go to Ben Thanh Market and Saigon Square. It's also a must to hang out at Búi Vién, and drink a few beers by the sidewalk. The cheapest bottle will only cost you around VND10,000 - VND 25,000 each (PHP20 - P50).

A tour around the city usually consists of the following sites: War Remnant Museum, Thien Hau Pagoda, Binh Tay Market, Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, General Post Office, Bitexco Financial Tower, Saigon River, Opera House, Rex Hotel and the City Hall. We weren't able to see the last three spots during the day. Thankfully, we found them at their most radiant forms during our DIY evening exploration. These iconic landmarks truly painted a vivid picture of Vietnam's past and present.

*Kuala Lumpur and Penang, Malaysia, 2013: A Cultural Melting Pot

I had no immediate plans to visit Malaysia. But I included it on my travel list because I wanted to see the iconic Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. I've read about the country and its rich culture. But I didn't give it that much thought. So, when my Filipino friends urged me to visit their second home, I gave it a go and was not left disappointed. Malaysia, let alone its lovely cities and states, has genuinely kept me in awe.

Malaysia, being the melting pot of religions, hosts a friendly and multiracial community. In our time in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, we witnessed how the society lived harmoniously despite being so diverse.

Our trip to KL gave us the chance to see the Petronas Twin Towers, Batu Caves, Berjaya Times Square (8th largest building in the world) and Kasturi Walk. We also got to try Nando’s Peri-Peri Chicken, and some Nasi Goreng at 77 Es Teler Juara Indonesia and Jalan Alor. As for shopping, Suria KLCC, Bukit Bintang, Central Market, Pavilion Mall, and Petaling Street (also known as Chinatown) were our go-to places.

Penang, the Pearl of the Orient, charmed us with its heritage sites, diverse cuisine, and harmonious blend of cultures. We got a full experience of the heritage town by exploring its streets and tasting the local dishes. The fried oysters, pork satay, Char Koay Teow and fried rice are a must-try.

We found several of George Town's significant sites on foot like the Cathedral of the Assumption, Little India, Cheah Si Sek Tek Tong, Campbell Street, St. George's Church, Kapitan Keling Mosque, Clan Jetties, Penang State Museum, Kek Lok Si Temple and Teochew Temple.

From the street art of George Town to the panoramic views of Penang Hill, every corner revealed a new facet of Malaysia’s beauty.

We availed of the temple tours from the hotel we stayed in (Boutique Cambo Hotel), and were only charged a total of $43 USD for two people. The Small Grand Tour Circuit cost $15, while the Grand Tour Circuit with Banteay Srei side trip cost $28.

The Small Tour Circuit is a must-see when in Siem Reap. Some of the temples that you will see along the way are the iconic shrines of Angkor Wat, Banteay Kdei, Ta Prohm, Ta Keo and Angkor Thom. The Grand Tour Circuit also offers a view of some of the most stunning temples that I've ever seen: Pre Rup, East Mebon, Ta Som, Neak Pean, and Preah Khan. We ended our tour at Angkor Thom’s south gate, as it serves as an exit back to Angkor Wat.

After temple hopping, we watched an Apsara Dance Performance and then explored the old market, pub street and night markets on foot. During our stay in the city, we also visited the War Museum Cambodia and the Angkor National Museum for our dose of Khmer history, culture, and heritage.

My husband and I weren’t able to push through with our honeymoon in El Nido due to health reasons. So we opted to move our trip a few months later, where we decided to stay in Phuket. This particular Thailand city might be an expensive destination. But it was well worth it. We had a great time just lounging by the beaches of Kata, Karon, and Patong while eating local dishes by the seaside.

Georgia is a beautiful country. I would've never imagined traveling to Europe soon after settling in Dubai. I'm very grateful that I had the opportunity to do so early on.

In Georgia, my husband and I were able to avail of different tours while staying in Old Tbilisi. We visited Gudauri where I had my first photo of the snowcapped mountains in the background. We got to see the Jvari Monastery, which is one of the most vibrant centers of Christianity in the country. We also did a DIY city tour of Tbilisi and discovered a lot of fascinating attractions and food strips. We explored Kakheti, where we sampled the most delicious wines and cheese variations.

Our 2-night stay was a bit pricey (especially the food), but well worth it. The rooms were lovely, the views of the beach were gorgeous, the infinity pools were inviting, and the staff was all smiles. Everyone, especially the kids, had a grand time bonding over bowling and swimming.

I’ve always been a light packer. I like to travel without having to think about carrying too many useless items. That’s why I load my things in an organized manner, so I don't forget anything before leaving for a trip. I also consider other factors when I arrange my things like my bag size, the number of days I'll be on the road, my destination's climate and the activities that I plan to do. The process might sound challenging for some people. However, packing my travel necessities into just one bag is quite doable. You can learn more about how to pack light by reading my tips below.

#1: Refer to your timetable

One of the things that can help manage your travel necessities is by creating a timetable. Determining how long you’ll be on the road will assist you in packing the items that you’ll only need for the duration of your trip. If you're only traveling for a week, prepare a specific number of clothes and gears that's fitting for seven days.

#2: Choose the type of bag that you will bring

#3: Check the weather forecast

Don't be the type of traveler who throws everything into the bag, just so you’ll feel secure of pulling out a nice line up of wardrobe and gear. If you intend to maximize the space in your backpack or luggage, then try to be efficient. Now, if you do run out of clothes to wear, ask your lodging if they're offering laundry service. Better yet, visit a laundry shop nearby. Worst-case scenario: wash your clothes in the bathroom or buy a new souvenir shirt.

It’s also important to learn about your destination’s climate, so you’ll know the weather that you’ll be experiencing. You can also check the season, so you’ll know what type of clothes to bring. If you intend on traveling light, then make sure you leave all of the unnecessary items. You wouldn’t want to bring a fur coat to a tropical country now, would you?

#4: Create a must-bring list

Make a list of things to bring, and then write the categories that will help classify your needs. On my end, I would fill in a chart that would usually consist of the following details:

• Important stuff (e.g. pocket money, passport if traveling abroad, e-tickets)

• Gadgets and other gear (e.g. camera, chargers, powerbank)

• Toiletries - in case your lodging doesn’t provide complimentary bath essentials (e.g. soap, shampoo)

• Clothes

#5: Consider the activities that you will be doing

If you’ll be heading to a beach destination, then it’s fitting to pack a set of swimwear and water gear. You probably have plenty of outfit combinations lined up in your head. However, you can still limit the number of items in your bag if you’re that keen on traveling light.

So, how will you plan your wardrobe? Let's say you'll be going on a trip for seven days. With that in mind, carrying at least 2-3 sets of clothes per day can be enough (e.g. one for sunbathing in the morning, a change of clothes, and another for socials at night).

#6: Don’t fold your clothes. Roll them instead!

The best tip that I’ve learned when it comes to traveling light is to ROLL YOUR CLOTHES (perfect for those who are obsessive-compulsive like me). You’re used to folding your clothes when packing them, and that's ok. However, there's a better method! By rolling each garment, you’ll get to save more space inside the bag. You'll avoid having to pull out clothes that are full of creases (no more ironing needed!).

#7: Check if your lodging provides free towels

Packing a towel inside your bag can add some bulk. It helps to inquire if your lodging has free towels for guests to use. In this way, you'll no longer have to bring your own. Also, leaving your bath towel at home can cut the number of garments that you’ll have to launder later on. Great idea, right?

Tagaytay Getaway: Was Hotel Casiana Worth the Hype?

Are you looking for a quick escape from the hustle and bustle? We recently stayed at Hotel Casiana in Tagaytay, lured by the promise of a relaxing weekend and, of course, that heated pool they offered.

Room with a View (and a Few Quirks)

We booked a Deluxe King room on a Sunday, which came with a sweet discount. First impressions? The room was spacious – a real plus. The balcony with the outdoor dinette? Definitely a winner for soaking in the cool Tagaytay breeze. The king-size bed and pillows were firm, just how we like them, leading to a solid night's sleep. Plus, Netflix on the TV was a nice touch for some late-night unwinding.

Now, for the "quirks." The shower was a bit of a hazard zone. Those tiles get slippery, so watch your step. Also, the Wi-Fi was initially weak. Thankfully, a Wi-Fi extender fixed that issue, but it's something to keep in mind. Oh, and the complimentary water? First jug's on the house. But refills? Not so much. They will charge you for the next one.

The room, including a buffet breakfast for two, was priced around P3,900. Breakfast itself was...okay. The longganisa was the highlight, but the rest was pretty standard fare: garlic rice, eggs (cooked to order), champorado, bread, jams and coffee. Nothing to write home about, but nothing terrible either.

The "Heated" Pool Debacle

Here's where things got a bit disappointing. One of the main reasons we booked Hotel Casiana was the advertised heated pool. Imagine our surprise when we dipped our toes in the next morning and it was freezing! The receptionist's explanation about strong winds affecting the heating system sounded a bit flimsy. Let's just say, we didn't end up swimming. A major bummer, especially in chilly Tagaytay.

Location, Lobby, and More!

On the bright side, the location is pretty convenient. It's near the famous Mr. Pares Tagaytay and right beside Hotel Montecillo, with a Starbucks Reserve just a short drive away. Parking was ample, which is always a plus. The lobby? Stunning. It's beautifully decorated and very inviting. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, even returning my husband's ID (all the way to our room) after I forgot to pick it up during check-in.

Their cute café is a hidden gem. The chicken empanada and brownie were delicious, and the café americano was perfectly brewed. Plus, the prices were surprisingly reasonable.

Abanico Spa

We also treated ourselves to a 1.5-hour massage at Abanico Spa. At P1,215 per person (with a Sunday discount of 10%), it seemed like a good deal. My husband enjoyed his deep tissue massage, but mine was a bit...intense. Let's just say I felt like my masseuse was trying to rearrange my spine (not the good kind!).

A Good Experience, But Could Be Better!

Getting to Hotel Casiana from our home in Batangas was a breeze, taking just under two hours with no traffic.

Overall, our stay was decent. The spacious room, friendly staff, and delicious café food were definite positives. However, the disappointing pool experience and the inconsistent spa service left us with mixed feelings.

If you're looking for a comfortable stay in Tagaytay with a nice room and location, Hotel Casiana is worth considering. Just don't get your hopes up too high for that heated pool. And maybe be a bit specific with your massage preferences.

Eight Years, Epic Getaway: Our Anniversary in Hennan Regency Boracay

Life, as they say, throws curveballs. Our actual 8th wedding anniversary was spent supporting family, as my husband's father was in and out of the hospital. It was a challenging time, but family comes first, always. We postponed our celebration, promising ourselves a special trip when the time was right. That time finally came last October, and Boracay, with its famous beaches and breathtaking sunsets, beckoned.

Scoring An Upgrade

We chose Hennan Regency Resort & Spa Boracay for the first three nights of our five-day escape. Given our budget, we booked the most affordable option, the superior room, for under Php 4,800 per night. Little did we know, fate had other plans! Arriving a bit travel-weary (and sleep-deprived), we inquired about early check-in. For a mere fee of just Php 1,432, we were upgraded to a deluxe room! It turned out that no superior rooms were ready yet, making our upgrade a welcome surprise and the perfect start to our vacation.

Our Home Away From Home

Our deluxe room exceeded all expectations. The spacious veranda, complete with a charming outdoor dinette set, offered a stunning pool view. This became our favorite spot for relaxing wine sessions at night. Inside, another dining set awaited, ideal for enjoying room service or snacks.

The luxurious marble-clad bathroom added a touch of elegance, and the 32-inch LCD TV provided entertainment when we weren't out exploring. And the little touches, like consistently replenished toiletries, tea, and coffee, made the experience even more enjoyable.

But the real highlight? The beds! They were incredibly comfortable, with perfectly firm pillows, guaranteeing us the best sleep.

Beyond the Room

Hennan Regency truly excels in its pool and beachfront offerings. Complimentary towels for the pool and beach were readily available, and sun loungers invited us to relax and soak up the sun. When the loungers were full, the hotel thoughtfully provided beach mats (banigs) for guests to use. We spent countless hours by the warm, inviting water, mesmerized by the glorious Boracay sunsets.

The hotel’s beachfront restaurant was a popular spot, especially the front seats facing the beach. While we didn’t manage to snag a reservation of these seats (they fill up quickly!), we heard glowing reviews. The breakfast buffet spread was another highlight, featuring many of my favorites, from kimchi and garlic fried rice to Champorado and fresh papaya.

Perhaps the most enticing amenities were the two heated swimming pools. One even boasted a pool bar, where we indulged in delicious food and expertly crafted cocktails. The friendly and always-smiling bar staff deserves a special shout-out!

We quickly discovered that Hennan Regency is not only one of the best hotels in the Hennan chain in Boracay but also one of the most reasonably priced, offering excellent value for money.

A Minor Hiccup: Security Deposit Details

The hotel required a Php 6,000 deposit for our three-night stay (Php 2,000 per night). While this is standard practice, I recommend paying in cash, if possible. This will ensure a smooth and immediate refund upon checkout. I used my credit card, and the refund process took almost a week, requiring constant follow-ups. Unfortunately, our emails to the hotel regarding the deposit were not answered, which was a little frustrating.

Despite the minor issue with the security deposit, our stay at Hennan Regency Resort was incredibly relaxing and enjoyable. The unexpected upgrade, the fantastic amenities, the friendly staff, and the stunning location made it the perfect place to celebrate our overdue anniversary. It was worth the wait!

Alabang Adventure: Books, Bites, and a Break at Acacia Hotel Manila

The first half of 2024 had been a whirlwind, so my husband and I desperately needed a quick escape. Serendipitously, the Big Bad Wolf book fair landed in Alabang, providing the perfect excuse for a much-needed staycation. We snagged a fantastic deal on Agoda – a one-night stay at Acacia Hotel Manila for under Php5,000. The proximity to the book fair was a major draw, but honestly, pure relaxation was the real agenda.

Our Home Away From Home

Acacia Hotel Manila proved to be an excellent choice. Its location was ideal, especially for the book fair at the Filinvest Tent. We could easily walk there, saving us time and hassle. But the convenience factor didn't stop there. With a McDonald's right outside the hotel and Westgate Alabang just across the street, a plethora of dining and shopping options were at our fingertips. Beyond the immediate conveniences, we also enjoyed the hotel's sweeping city views, a refreshing panorama of clean, well-maintained streets and lush greenery.

Our Deluxe King Room was well-appointed and provided everything we could need for a comfortable stay. From the expected tea and coffee-making facilities, bottled water, and toiletries to the thoughtful additions of towels and robes, they had us covered. The room was spacious, offering a pleasant view, a perfectly comfortable temperature, and a wonderfully fresh scent. If we had one minor suggestion, it would be to improve the lighting. The room was a tad dark, particularly in the evenings.

The spacious bathroom, complete with a separate shower and bathtub, was a definite highlight. We were particularly impressed by its impeccable cleanliness. It was spotless – no mold in sight! This attention to detail truly enhanced our experience.

While the pool was a bit on the smaller side, it still offered lovely views, perfect for unwinding. Breakfast was complimentary, and while the salad bar and eggs were delicious, I admit I was slightly disappointed that the bacon wasn't as crispy as I prefer. However, this minor detail didn't detract from the overall filling breakfast.

What truly elevated our stay at Acacia Hotel was the exceptional staff. They were incredibly accommodating and always greeted us with a smile. They even allowed us to check in an hour early, a much-appreciated gesture that set the tone for a relaxing staycation.

Angrydobo: A Taste of Judy Ann's Kitchen

Before checking in, we headed to Westgate Alabang for lunch. We decided to finally try Angrydobo, the Filipino restaurant owned by celebrity Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo. We ordered the Angrydobo Classic (of course!), Chili Garlic Rice, Laing with Bagnet, and Tamarind Iced Tea. The food was good, though a bit oily. The presentation was lovely, and the restaurant's ambiance was a plus. My only comment about the Tamarind Iced Tea was that it was too sour for my taste.

Our Alabang staycation was a success. We hauled a mountain of books from the Big Bad Wolf fair (perfect for Christmas presents!), enjoyed a comfortable stay at Acacia Hotel, and explored the flavors of Angrydobo. It was the perfect mini-break to unwind and recharge before diving back into the daily grind. Sometimes, a change of scenery, good food, and a stack of new books are all you need to feel refreshed and ready to take on the world again.

Making Memories: Family Time at Via Appia Tagaytay

Our family vacation in Tagaytay last July 2024 was relaxing, thanks to our stay at Via Appia Tagaytay. They made it easy for us to unwind and enjoy quality time together. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the amenities and the friendly, accommodating staff.

Fun in the Water (Heated, No Less!)

The highlight of our trip, especially for the kids, was the heated indoor pool. It was the perfect way to relax after a busy week. The complimentary towels were a definite plus! We spent hours splashing and playing, making the most of this fantastic amenity.

Game On!

The indoor game room was another hit with everyone. The coin-operated basketball arcade and billiards table provided endless entertainment. It was a great way to bond as a family and unleash our competitive spirits (in a friendly way, of course!).

Exploring the Grounds

We were pleasantly surprised to discover a charming chapel on the grounds. It’s a beautiful space, perfect for special occasions like weddings or christenings. While we didn't have an event to celebrate, it added a sense of tranquility to the atmosphere. The lush garden at Via Appia offered a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle. We enjoyed leisurely walks, taking in the beautiful scenery. The strategically placed benches were perfect for lounging and soaking up the fresh Tagaytay air.

Dining Delights at Firenze

When hunger struck, we didn't have to go far. Via Appia boasts an in-house Italian restaurant, Firenze. With both indoor and outdoor seating, we enjoyed delicious meals in a relaxed setting. It was incredibly convenient to have such a great dining option right on-site.

Comfortable Accommodations

Our rooms at Via Appia were cozy and well-equipped with the essentials. While they might have been smaller than usual, they were perfectly comfortable for our family. My husband and I were lucky enough to be given a corner room, which offered a lovely view of the gardens.

Prime Location

One of the best things about Via Appia's location is its proximity to other Tagaytay attractions. Just a short four-minute drive away, we found ourselves at popular restaurants like Leslie's Bulalo, Starbucks Reserve, and Cecilia's Buco Pie. It made exploring the local culinary scene incredibly easy.

Family-Friendly and Convenient

Via Appia is undeniably kid-friendly. The staff were incredibly nice and accommodating, always ready to assist with a smile. The elevator and stairs made navigating the property a breeze. We also appreciated the ample parking, a definite plus for families traveling with vehicles. And let's not forget the roof deck! It's a great spot to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Budget-Friendly

Agoda prices fluctuate, but for our two families (a couple and a family of four), we budgeted around P3,500 per room (breakfast not included). While prices may vary, this gives you a general idea of the cost.

Our stay at Via Appia Tagaytay was a truly memorable experience. The excellent amenities, friendly staff, and prime location made it the perfect choice for our family vacation. We highly recommend Via Appia to anyone looking for a relaxing and enjoyable getaway in Tagaytay.

A Year of Transitions, Loss, and New Beginnings

2024 was a year of stark contrasts. It was marked by profound loss and unexpected joy, by heart-wrenching grief and newfound hope. It was a year that tested our resilience, deepened our love, and reshaped our understanding of life.

A Difficult Start

The first half of the year was marked by a relentless cycle of hospital stays, sleepless nights, and the constant worry for my father-in-law. My husband and I found ourselves unexpectedly thrust into the role of caregivers. For months, we dedicated ourselves to his care, navigating the complexities of his illness with a mix of fear and hope, all while giving him the best possible care. We learned the delicate balance between providing comfort and maintaining our own mental and physical health.

However, fate had a different plan, and he was called away from us much sooner than we anticipated. The suddenness of his passing left us reeling, grappling with a profound sense of loss. The void left by his absence is palpable, and we miss him dearly. It was during these trying times that we truly learned the meaning of selfless love and the fragility of life. Every day, we cherish the memories we made with him and find solace in the love and support of our family and friends.

A New Chapter

In September, we finally moved into our new home in the province. Amidst our grief, we found solace in the beauty of nature and the tranquility of our newfound haven. It was a bittersweet moment, and the house, once a symbol of hope, now carried a tinge of melancholy. We wished Papa could have seen the place we had dreamed of and built. It was a place filled with hope and promise, a place where we could heal and rebuild our lives.

As the year progressed, we sought opportunities to celebrate life and love. To celebrate our late 8th wedding anniversary, we took a much-needed break and escaped to the beautiful island of Boracay. Traveling to South Korea is a dream come true, but hunting down the perfect place to stay can be a journey in itself. Between 2024 and 2025, we checked into various hotels in the country; some of these we would choose to stay in again, while others were less favorable. I booked all the hotels on Agoda, and I'm here to share my honest experience so you can decide what’s best for you. Are you ready for the first round of reviews? First up: Hound Hotel!

Our home away from home in Busan (November 2024)

I knew we had made a good choice as soon as we rolled our bags into the Hound Hotel. Right away, it felt like home—a little oasis in the middle of Busan. This stay became our gold standard for a reason.

Location

The location couldn't be more ideal! It’s just a breezy five-minute walk from Beomnageoul subway station, placing you right in the heart of local culture—think sizzling street food, friendly neighborhood grocery stores (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven), and charming coffee shops where you’ll want to linger.

Finding the hotel is straightforward: exit the station near the CU convenience store (look for a plant shop and an open parking lot), walk straight ahead, and take your first left. The Hound Hotel signage will be right there, welcoming you in.

Hotel Reception

We arrived a little ahead of the 3 PM check-in time, but the staff were so accommodating—they got us into our room by around 2 PM. The check-in process was smooth and genuinely welcoming. One delightful perk: unlimited bottled water, coffee, and tea available in the lobby! The only “catch” is that you enjoy them inside the hotel, which was fine with us.

Need extra toiletries? They’re just a request away, including basics like tissues, razors, and toothbrush kits.

Room and Amenities

This is where Hound Hotel really shines. Our room was surprisingly roomy, bright, and well-designed. The sofa and desk chair were our cozy nooks after long days out, and the huge TV (hello, Netflix and our nightly “Culinary Wars” marathons!) was a treat.

The AC was efficient, the bed firm but comfortable, and blackout curtains gave us heavenly, uninterrupted sleep. The bathroom? Pure bliss. Heated toilet seat, automatic bidet, and a dreamy bathtub—plus, high-quality complimentary shampoo, conditioner, and bath wash. Towels were always plentiful, making us feel genuinely pampered.

Hotel Access

Lugging heavy bags is never fun, so the elevator was a blessing. They also offer luggage storage before check-in and after check-out—super useful for travelers like us with unusual travel times.

Value for Money

I would definitely say this deal is a steal. For the price of Php14,400 (5-night stay), we received far more than we anticipated. This price is affordable, especially when compared to what you pay in Seoul for similar (or even less impressive) accommodations. So, if you find yourself in Busan, make sure to book Hound Hotel!

Makiling!) each time new guests arrive—a nice touch that we found both comforting and rejuvenating. Lounge daybeds line the pool area, inviting you to kick back and enjoy the water’s warmth or simply bask in the sun.

There are four spacious rooms in the villa, each equipped with comfortable beds, plenty of charging ports, and standalone clothes racks, so everyone can feel at home. The tropical-inspired paintings and throw pillows are lovely touches that add a splash of personality. Each room has a Smart TV and an air conditioner, and all have private bathrooms for a truly exclusive feel. While the villa doesn’t provide toiletries, they do offer fresh towels, so be sure to pack your essentials.

The open kitchen includes everything you need to prepare a feast: a stove, microwave, coffee maker, rice cooker, and even a charcoal grill for a barbecue. But please make sure to bring dining utensils, as Happy Farm Villas does not provide these.

The spacious outdoor dining area with long tables can seat up to 20 guests, surrounded by lush greenery and towering trees. The lounge chairs and couches nearby create a cozy, inviting space to unwind post-meal.

While Happy Farm Villas has a lot going for it, there are a few minor points to consider to manage expectations:

There aren’t any restaurants within walking distance, so planning ahead of time for meals is key. There’s an Alfamart about a five minute drive away for any last-minute essentials.

Dark Outside at Night

The villa is pitch-dark outside at night, which is only a consideration if you plan to venture out. Once inside, however, all areas are well-lit for comfort and safety.

Room for Minor Improvements

Our bathroom was spacious, but the water pressure in the shower could be improved for a quicker rinse, and there’s no water heater (or I might have just missed finding the heater), which is something to consider if you’re a fan of hot showers. The door in our bathroom could also use a bit of maintenance, as the base was starting to wear.

Additionally, the entertainment area can get a bit warm when playing games, as ventilation is limited.

Farm Life Comes with Nature’s Guests

Since the villa is surrounded by rice fields and farmland, expect to encounter a few insects around the outdoor dining and pool areas. It’s a minor part of the experience that adds to the villa's natural charm, but if you’re a bit squeamish about bugs, pack some insect repellent!

For three blissful weeks, I stayed with my brother and sister-in-law. Their warm hospitality and the comfort of being surrounded by family set the tone for a relaxing stay. After securing my precious package, the Loc Coffee & Tea cafe beckoned us with its promise of an energizing espresso shot, setting the tone for the day.

Our haven for three nights, Hanoi Sky Hotel, was strategically nestled near the enchanting train street, creating an ambiance that spoke of the city's vibrant soul. After settling in, we delved into the old quarters, stumbling upon the unassuming Thit Xien Nuong, a roadside stall offering the cheapest yet most delectable banh mi.

Our roadside food trip was the perfect prelude to the exquisite high tea at La Mensa, where delicate cakes and fragrant tea delighted our senses.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we savored life's simplicity – cheap Hanoi beers, hot bowls of beef pho, fried spring rolls, and the vibrant street ambiance. The night became a tapestry of flavors, painting Hanoi as a city that thrived on its rich history and the pulsating beat of its culinary scene.

Day 2: A Symphony for the Palate

The day unfolded with a purposeful journey to Hoan Kiem Lake, where fate led us to Dac San Hoi An. It was an unassuming banh mi haven with layers of flavor that exceeded our expectations.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee also drew us to the acclaimed Cafe Giang for an unforgettable rendezvous with egg coffee. Packed with patrons, the café buzzed with energy as the creamy concoction left us yearning for more.

Our first day in Tokyo was a whirlwind of excitement. After checking into the comfortable Hotel Horidome Villa, we embarked on an exploration of the city. Tokyo's energy was palpable as we strolled around the streets. A surprising highlight was our visit to a 7-Eleven, where we discovered the delight of cheap but delectable treats like onigiri, fresh sliced fruits, and bottles of refreshing orange juice.

Birthdays are a time for celebration, reflection, and rejuvenation. As I turned 39, my husband and I embarked on a week-long retreat to Lilom Resort in Mabini Batangas. Little did we know that this enchanting destination would give us a perfect balance of work, relaxation, and delightful experiences. The drive down the resort parking lot was a downhill struggle, with its narrow and sharp turns. Globe's signal was non-existent, too, so we needed help contacting the resort representative. But with the help of some locals, word was sent to Lilom, and we were finally picked up. And from there, we hiked down to the beach, cracking knees and all - but the sea view made all the aches worth it!

It was a warm welcome on our arrival at Lilom Resort. We were greeted by friendly staff who immediately made us feel at home. The resort's lush tropical surroundings and breathtaking ocean views instantly transported us to a state of relaxation. We settled into our charming cottage called Tuko (later transferring to Satcho's House), which boasted a spacious and elegantly designed interior with modern amenities. The scent of the sea air and the soothing sound of waves crashing against the shore embraced us, setting the tone for a serene and rejuvenating week ahead.

Morning Bliss: Watching the sunrise and inhaling fresh ocean air

My days began with the gentle morning rays of the sun casting a warm glow over Lilom Resort. As an early bird, I would wake up at 5:30 to work a few hours on my laptop. By 4:30, I would clock out from work, and we would walk to the rocky beach hand-in-hand. The sight of shells scattered across the shore brought a sense of joy as it contrasted with the bustling city life we had temporarily left behind. We savored our strolls, feeling the sand beneath our feet and reveling in the refreshing ocean breeze. These walks became a cherished ritual, allowing us to reconnect with nature and each other.
