Happy FRIDAY lovelies!!! So, let me just go ahead and confess, I plum wore myself OUT earlier this week running all over the city for National Stationery Show stuff and apartment hunting. So much so that I ended up laid up in bed for the last few days. My poor feet felt like they were gonna fall off! (That’s what I get for going for CUTE shoes over COMFORTABLE ones!) I honestly think I pulled something in my right calf, not to mention the commuting in and out of the city, going to bed LATE and getting up EARLY just really put me down for the count. So all that to say, I didn’t make it back to NSS for another round of paper stalking which makes me uber sad. Luckily I’m feeling a little better today so E and I are heading back to the city for more apartment hunting. Apparently I’m a glutton for punishment… but really we are just eager to get a place and get settled so we can figure out what ‘normal life’ here in NY looks like for us!

In other personal news I was ~~forced~~ convinced by my dad to try out this program called the 24 Day Challenge from Advocare. He recently signed up as an advisor and was having great results with it, so he offered a 24 Day Challenge kit to me, for free. I thought, What could it hurt? It’s free! Little risk involved, right? Well, I’m so glad I tried it. I’m on day 12 of 24 (halfway there!!) and I’m down 8 lbs!! For those curious, the products involved are created to reset your metabolism, help digestion and nutrient absorption with a combo of supplements, drinks, and shakes. I’ve always had digestive tummy troubles (sorry for the TMI) and since starting the challenge I’ve been really happy with the way my tummy feels AND looks- I’ve lost significant inches in my midsection already. One thing I really have enjoyed is that I get to eat real food and plenty of it- no starving yourself or only relying on protein shakes for sustenance. Their products work in conjunction with a healthy diet to give great results. I can’t wait to see where I end up at the end of 24 days! Using a Travel Agent for your Destination Wedding

Most of the posts I write here are pretty general, but every once in a while something comes up specific to destination weddings. This is one such post.

It was not that long ago, really, that if you were planning on travelling, you talked to a travel agent (or so I have been told). But then this crazy thing called the Internet happened, and people were able to research online, look at hundreds of reviews online, book trips online…

I do a lot online. When we have travelled before, we have always used the Internet. We have not even talked to a travel agent before. Even getting a hotel room somewhere; we look and book online. We like the ease of it, and it is usually pretty darn budget savvy too.

But then we decided on a destination wedding.

There was some debate on whether or not to go with a travel agent. On the one hand, not going with a travel agent is generally cheaper. There is no way around it; you can book at your leisure, check prices all the time, score last minute deals…

But for our wedding? That just seemed so stressful. On the other hand was ease of mind – someone taking care of the “what ifs”, and, most importantly, taking care of the “what ifs” for all of out guests. I thought of having to call family members to nag them to book their rooms… no thank you. Then we found out we were coming out of different airports and would need a stopover in Toronto… oh goodness.

Next came the decision – an online travel agent or a local one? This could have gone either way, honestly. I just started emailing local travel agents first, and conversed briefly with those who responded. I did this very early; I figured if they took the time to answer my questions politely and efficiently that far out, they would be a fairly safe bet. One travel agent did just that. We spoke a few times, and I made my – er, our – decision. So we ended up going with a local travel agent.

Has it all been smooth sailing? No, certainly not. But our travel agent has been helpful, and though she has gotten mixed up a couple times, it has not (yet – knock on wood!) been anything serious, and overall she has been very helpful. It turns out we are flying out of three airports – including one in the States. We are meeting up for an overnight stopover in Toronto, and then carrying on to our destination. Coordinating all of that would have been so stressful for me. Dealing with the numerous (read: four) flight time (and day!) changes also would have driven me crazy. So we are happy with our decision to have a travel agent.

We really did not spend anymore than we would have booking on our own (never mind the peace of mind thing). If we were booking on our own, we would be waiting for a deal close (ish) to the wedding date. This would have been a bad mistake. Our resort is updating, rebranding, and changing to adults-only (read: bigger price tag). However, we booked earlier with our travel agent, so we do not have to worry about the price changes.

Plus, the adults-only change was very scary when we heard about it. My sister / maid of honour would only be 17 during our vacation. Not to fear though! After a frantic email, my travel agent got on the phone – er, email – and contacted everyone who needed to be contacted, and got permission for my sister to stay at the resort. That alone made me glad we did not book on our own.

Here are two tips though:

Tip #1: Find a travel agent who specializes in what you are after, if that is possible. While our specific travel agent HAS done destination weddings, she does not specialize in them (though someone at her office does, and in hindsight we probably would have gone with that individual, just for comfort and confidence, but we are certainly not complaining). Someone who has a lot of experience will be able to answer any questions you have, point you in the right direction, and even suggest locations to you when you are starting your search (we came with a place we wanted first, but if you do not know where you want to get married, they know what is required and good locations).

Tip #2: Find a travel agent who does not charge you a fee. Ours does not; otherwise we would have found someone else. This just makes sense: Why pay for something you can get for free?

Again, though, so happy with our decision so far! It is great to have someone “on your side” in the booking and planning process. She is not a wedding planner, but she is very knowledgeable and, for us, has been essential in the biggest part of a destination wedding – getting you to your destination!

I am Engaged!!…. But now what!?

After calling my mom and best friend and my brothers and sister and announcing it to the world, I began to think well now what? Planning a wedding was completely new to me, so how should i get started? well the first task I tackled was to develop a list. I wrote down all the items that a wedding must include. Such as a venue, flowers, catering, music, decorations, a cake, rentals (chairs and tables etc.), attire (dress, tux), Stationery (invites, save the dates, programs etc.), Photographer, and transportation. Regardless of the theme of a wedding all weddings have each item.

After making this list I sat down with my fiancé and we talked about a budget, we both would love to get a house with in the next couple of years so we new right off from the start that our budget would be rather small. With my School District salary and his Sous Chef salary it would be impossible to have a wedding that would cost us more than we can afford while saving some money. We both settled on 10,000 we couldn’t do more. But what could i really afford on a tight budget and what should i be looking at spending for each item. How should the money be distributed.

At this point I realized I needed some kind of guidance, so I spoke with my Fiancé sister (whom is a wedding planner) she gave me some helpful hits, she asked me to priorities my list, and number what is the most important thing about my wedding, she explained how for her wedding music was extremely important as her husband was a big music aficionado. So here is how I did it.

Wedding Budget Amounts

50% of Budget – Venue & Catering – 5,000

10% – music – 800

10% – Photography – 1000

3% – Wedding Gifts for Wedding Party and favors for guests – 360

3% – invitations – 360

1% – Transportation – 120

10% – wedding attire – 1000

3% – for additional cost if wedding ceremony is different than reception venue. – 460

10% – Flowers – 900

Since I knew that my biggest priority was to have a nice venue and excellent food (since my chef Fiancé is so darn picky) I knew that most of my money would be going to those two items. Everything else I broke down according to what I felt was least and most important. Now although the budget may shift but at least now I have a foundation which to work on.

What creative or personal aspects did you include in your wedding?

Jonathan and I wanted to incorporate our late grandparents into the reception, so we tried to keep their memory there by putting pictures of them on a bookshelf behind the cake. I think this definitely added a very personal and memorable aspect to the wedding.

What was the biggest thing you did to save money?

The biggest thing that I did to save money was try to search for the best deal I could find for everything. This included my invitations, save the dates, wedding décor, etc. For the save the dates I searched the web for ideas and we finally decided to go with post cards from Zazzle. This alone only cost us about $70.00 not to mention a stamp for a post card is cheaper than a stamp for a card so we saved money going that route. I also saved a ton of money with our reception décor. Every weekend I would literally try to go to every craft store, wholesale store, or discount store searching for cheap vases, candles, picture frames, and lanterns to find the best deal. Doing this cut down a lot of cost for décor and I was actually able to bring every idea I had to life.

What’s the best advice you have for planning your wedding now that you’re on the other side?

My best advice for planning would be to really take the time to stop and enjoy every single minute of it. Sometimes you become so wrapped up in the planning that you forget what the day is really about. People always say that this day goes by in an instant, but I don’t think until it is your day, do you really understand this. So my advice is to slow down and enjoy the whole journey!

What was your biggest splurge?

My biggest splurge definitely was our reception venue. Having a wedding in Knoxville in the fall is a challenge in itself with trying to compete with college football. So every girl tries to book her wedding on the one Saturday that there is an away game or a by-weekend. Right after I got engaged and after we decided on a date, picking and reserving the reception venue was the first thing I wanted to nail down. I had a couple of things in mind, but somehow came across this beautiful space that overlooked the Tennessee River in the heart of downtown and I just had to have it. I had known that this space used to be a restaurant but that it had closed down a few years back. I went home and did some research and found out that you could rent the space and that they also did their own catering, which was perfect! The only thing I was worried about was that it would be out of our price range, but after calling and more research I found out that it was totally in our budget. After having our reception here and hearing all of our guests say how beautiful it was, I am definitely glad we decided to splurge on it.

What was your favorite detail?

My favorite detail was incorporating fall into all of the wedding details without going over board and tacky on the décor. At my reception I definitely wanted it to have an intimate feeling, but yet have fall integrated into that. I had lots of fall decorations including lanterns, glass pumpkins, mums, etc.

What is the most memorable moment of your day?

My most memorable moment of the day would definitely be after arriving to the reception venue before we went inside, my parents and aunt and uncle stayed back to toast Jonathan and I and to give us their special marriage advice. That moment just stuck in my mind as one of my most memorable from the day, because it was just so special for us to be able to spend those couple of uninterrupted minutes with them.

The Second Time Bride (and Why It Makes Me Budget Savvy)

I wasn’t budget savvy the first time I was married, which was almost 8 years ago now. I was in college, marrying a man who I had been with since I was 16. While I was being mindful of not spending “too much”, I had no idea what the budget really was, let alone any budget at all. I got my paycheck, paid my bills, and what I had left I would buy things I saw that I liked. My mom and dad, traditionally, were paying for my wedding, for the most part, but I racked up a few thousand on credit cards for decorations and “necessities”. Sure I found ways to simplify by having my uncle be my bartender (who in turn ended up pushing me to the ground in my wedding dress in his own drunken stupor by the end of the night), and having a friend of the family take our photos for free. It was a nice day, a beautiful wedding. But, I look back on that day and cringe at the “knowing” I had … that something was missing.

Fast forward to 2012, six and a half years of marriage and my husband tells me news that rocked my world. I thought he was cheating. What I didn’t know, was that it was with other men. The truth? Best thing to ever happen to me. Bear with me … I’m getting got the budget savvy part … I promise!

When my fiancé, John, and I reconnected in the midst of my divorce, it was an instant feeling of knowing that what I was missing on my wedding day 8 years ago (and my marriage), was the intense feeling I had the first time his hand touched mine. Fireworks. Butterflies. You know the drill. We’d known each other growing up as kids, John and I. And after 13 years reconnected when Facebook suggested “You Might Know: John Stevens.”

Thirteen months later and John popped the question I had been waiting my entire life for. The man I was meant to spend the rest of my life with, asked me to be his wife.

John and I both work and have good jobs. As a second job, I’m a professional photographer with a studio in our condo and as a wedding photographer. I spend a lot of time immersed in everything wedding, so I see a lot of “blown budgets” as well as a lot of very creative and beautiful ways of making a simple wedding unique to the couple. But the bottom line was this – Mom & Dad weren’t paying for a second wedding. We’re over 30, we have a steady income and the expectation didn’t come as a surprise that we would be paying for this wedding ourselves.

As we looked over our budget, we knew that we needed to keep it small so we could save and pay and enter our marriage without a lump of joint debt. (Been there. Done that.) Our plan is to buy land and build a house and spending $10-20,000 on a wedding just hurt to think about when our bigger dream was to (literally) build our life together. We decided on a budget of $6,000 was reasonable for us with a small and intimate guest list and saving our money until our wedding on 8/31/13.

The kick? We were engaged on April 8th, 2013. While we initially planned for an October 2014 wedding, we realized that we wanted to have the wedding so we could start focusing on the next step: Our house. Our time frame was cut from 18 months to 4-1/2. Nothing says crunch time than a bride on a budget AND a short time frame!

As a second-time bride, I look at our wedding through a different pair of eyes. I remember being a first-time bride and splurging on so much and not identifying what the day was really about. I’m older (thank you gray hair for reminding me) and my priorities and expectations of a wedding day have drastically shifted.

8 years ago, I was focused on a dream wedding. Today, I just want a dream marriage.

National Stationery Show Fun!

Good morning and happy Monday all my budget savvy brides and friends! Posting might be a little light / different this week as I am in full-on paper-lust at the National Stationery Show! I walked much of the show yesterday and saw so many great designs and cards and overall papery goodness! I’ll share a few favorites that I spotted yesterday for you!

This engagement card is adorable and totally cracked me up! It’s by a fellow Stationery Academy Alum Julie Goette of Ten Four Paper. She has an amazing collection of hilarious greeting cards for nearly every occasion imaginable. I seriously loved every one! Here’s a couple of her other wedding/engagement greeting cards (not necessarily for the bride but TO the bride):

A few other faves from Day 1:

Letter sparklers from Tops Malibu! Spell out your last names, L-O-V-E, X-O-X-O… possibilities are endless. I think these would be ADORABLE as a cake topper with a sparkly edge during the cake cutting. Very festive, don’t you think?

Also loved these cards from One Canoe Two Letterpress! Most of their invitations and letterpress items are not necessarily budget savvy BUT I absolutely LOVED their work and these cards are great for a wedding gift!

You gals already know about my love for May Designs / May Books. These adorable, customizable notebooks are tres chic and make AWESOME gifts. Not to mention they have a variety of functions. I keep one in my purse at all times – you never know when you’re gonna need to take down a note- why not do it in a CUTE notebook? They recently released a wedding planner version of their notebooks which would really help you stay on track of planning your big day. Another good one to keep around is a budget tracker. I seriously can’t say enough good things about the ladies at May Designs and their products!

Well, that about wraps it up for Day 1. I focused mostly on gifty-items yesterday, so coming next will be actual wedding invitation faves! Stay tuned!

And the (Wedding) Band Played On (at the Outlets)

Sometimes a great way to save money is just right in front of your face.

When I attended my first wedding event, just six weeks into our engagement, I thought I had found THE ONE. My wedding ring. A local jeweler had it on display and it was so lovely, and so delicate, and so unique… and so Ashley. Said ring, though, was a bit out of my budget. But after agonizing over this decision, and pining for this perfect circle of platinum, I decided it was worth the splurge. After all, I will look at this ring every day for the rest of my life.

While I am a big believer in living modestly, I also think it’s important — on arguably one of the most important days of your life — to treat yourself, within reason. When I first started dedicating funds to our wedding, I decided there were a few things that I prioritized, and on those items I allowed my budget enough wiggle room to get what I (or we) wanted. Because Matt and I are tying the knot in New York, it seemed obvious that far more than half of our budget would need to be reserved for our reception space and food/bar. Such is the case with just about everything in the city — space just costs more here. I’ve lived here long enough to know that.

Our wedding bands were the other X factor — I wanted both of us to get something we would love now and for many (many, many, many…) years to come. Especially Matt, and partially for selfish reasons — I am so eager to look down at his hand and see a wedding ring there. The idea of that makes me so happy.

Last weekend, while visiting my hometown for my bridal shower (hosted by my mama!), I asked Matt if he’d be willing to go to the nearby outlet center simply to get sized for a ring. After hearing me mention our wedding bands for the umpteenth time, he agreed (to shut me up? Probably.). I really only had that intention while driving there… and then it hit me. I bet we could get a pretty sick deal at the Zales outlet store… Genius! I’m not sure why it hadn’t occurred to me earlier — OF COURSE going to a jewelry store outlet would be substantially less expensive than its full-priced counter part!

So, there, my husband-to-be found his wedding band-to-be, making his wife-to-be very, very happy. We scored an incredible deal — like almost 70% off the original price kind of incredible — and it felt so good to pocket that dough that I decided to roll the dice and go on the hunt for me as well. And to continue our hot streak, I found a very similar ring to the one I fell in love with months earlier for about ONE-SIXTH of the cost! We left the store wedding bands in tow, and with about $700 of our original ring budget remaining!

I’ve got another cute printable today for you designed by Jessica Bishop Paperie to match the table numbers from last week! These are blank printable place cards in a striped pattern in three different color options – the PDFs have the cards placed 6-up on a sheet. You can import the file into Microsoft Word or another editing program and add your guests’ names via your computer, or print them out and hand write them! The files also include cut lines so you can trim them out, and a light line for where to fold them. Hope you like- and please let me know if you use them in your wedding! I’d love to see pictures!
