It is the most elegant and distinguished neighborhood of the City of Buenos Aires. The name of Recoleta comes from the Barefoot Monks of Recoleto placed in the area at the beginning of the 18th. Century. Its French style construction, its urban design, history, food restaurants, and all the trees around the area, make of Recoleta a place not to miss. During the week-ends, the green areas are the meeting points of young people and artists.

Mercedes Sosa dies.

Argentine folk singer and activist Mercedes Sosa has died aged 74 after suffering kidney problems.

A Unicef goodwill ambassador, Sosa produced 40 albums over her long career and collaborated with musicians including Luciano Pavarotti, Sting, Shakira and Joan Baez.

She was mourned at the National Congress of Buenos Aires.

Domingo French was born in this house; he fought in the English invasions of 1805. The mansion was built in 1762. The patio of this house was turned into a gallery with many small antique shops. At Defensa 700, until the second half of the last century this Passage was the physical border of San Telmo, as there, it used to run a stream. Once entering this magical street you will see many examples of last century Argentina architecture. Curiously: at number 380, you'll find the Minute House, built around 1850 with a facade of only 2.30 meters and a tiny balcony in its upper floor. Hemispheres Visual Journalism Summit

SND, Sociedad de Diseño Periodístico is an annual summit that will be held for the first time in Buenos Aires from September 24 to 26 at the Centro Cultural Borges right at the center of Buenos Aires' downtown commercial district. There will be awards for the best journalists, multimedia design work and visual journalism.

Hemispheres will consist on two diferent programmes: a professional one, in the mornings, that will reunite a selection of well known designers, editors, photogrphers, typographers, online journalists and scholars to discuss about the state of news and design.

The next programme, to be held in the afternoons, will search to get design news
close to students by offering some of the same Professionals’ conferences especially oriented to students.

Some of the speakers will be Nigel Holmes from the USA, Olivier Bourgeois from France, and Luke Hayman from the UK.

Founded in 1889, in this museum you can visit key pieces of the Argentinean history: exotic pieces such as San Martin's campaign cot, Juan Manuel de Rosas' armchair and guitar, the inkwell that the Representatives of the Provinces used to sign the 1853 National Constitution, and Mariquita Sanchez de Thompson's piano. There also are 32 oil paintings on the war with Paraguay of the artist Candido Lopez that are worthwhile the visit to the museum. You may get there with Subway Line C exit Estacion Constitucion.

Opening hours from March: Saturdays 10am to 1pm; Sundays 3:30pm to 6:30pm. Guided tours: Sundays at 4pm. The tour covers atrium, cloisters, excavations, sacristy, Sibyls collection, the temple and its altars, organ and Foundation Chapel.

It was built in 1734 by Jesuit architects (among them: Andres Bianchi, Juan Primoli and Jose Schmidt, as well as Antonio Masella). At first, it was called the Church of our Lady of Bethlehem and it was in 1806 that it was named after the patron saint of sailors, San Pedro Gonzales Telmo Parish Church. There is a marble table in the sacristy that Bethlehemites would use for operations. This order run the church from 1800 to 1822. They used to live in a building across from the church, where the first School of Medicine was opened, and they attended the sick and wounded during the English Invasions and the epidemic outbreaks.

The Sibyls are a collection of 12 oil paintings dating back to the XVIII century influenced by a Cuzco art school and they are a unique piece in Argentina. In 2005, they were restored and and they are tart of the church's historic and artistic legacy.

Fundación Oftalmológica Argentina (FOA), was born on November 30, 1964. It was created by Enrique Segundo Malbran, whose vision and inititative led him to the creation of this non-profit private institution.

Casa FOA was launched for the first time in 1985, when Mrs Mercedes Malbran de Campos and a group of other ladies started it as a way of raising funds for Fundación Oftalmológica Argentina (Argentinean Ophtalmology Foundation) Jorge Malbran (FOA).

Casa FOA is, essentially, a setting for exhibitors to show their creativity, a meeting place where designers, architects, decorators and ladscape gardeners share their vision with the assisting public. Each year Casa FOA is held on a different environment, this year is held for the second time at the Palermo Horse Racetrack (Hipodromo de Palermo).
