Oh yes.. networking issues can be so anti-fun to diagnose.
First of all, can you provide me info on the router in question - make, model, how long have you had it. Also, have you upgrade said router recently? Most of the major manufacturers (Linksys, Netgear, DLink, Belkin, SMC) issue firmware updates for their current product lines every 3-6 months (and more depending on how old the product has been on the market and whether it needs and update or not).
A firmware update has helped me many times in the past with connectivity and overall router administration issues.

Now, most of the manufacturers cannot guarantee that their product will handle 365 24-7 usage, nor do they support the product when exposed to excessive heat due to attic use or blocking the air vents.
If you want something that is built better then check out Sonicwall, InstaGate, Cisco, etc.
Or... build your own linux box providing all routing functions and pair it up with nice DLink switch - preferably gigabit. Check out IPCOP or MONOWALL.


Are you familiar with command line tools like ping and traceroute? These utilities can be extremely helpful in your network analysis.

Either you can wait until the problem arises again or you can attempt to replicate it. Use the ping command to send information back and forth from your computer to your router, modem, and google or any website. Pinging the route that your computer takes can reveal where the issue may be. If you are seeing high pings between you and your router then it may mean that it cannot handle multiple hosts (feel router and if it is hot then set it on its side and/or into more room so it can breath. Spray it out with canned air or air compressor. attempt to upgrade router with new firmware) Sometimes just doing a power cycle can clear it up, granted once you've power cycled your modem once then you'll probably have to do it again. Doing a reset (usually a paper clip poked into hole on back with little button in it) can help to, but you'll need to know how to re-set it up (if required and if you want to secure wireless).

Traceroutes can be good if you want to determine where the hiccup may be if it's not in your local network (this is good for enterprise networks though with multiple routes).
Time warner was screwing up hardcore back when I had RoadRunner and Comcast wasn't around here. One of their routers (hops) was causing me to ping at around 300ms. I'm a gamer and that is not acceptable, as you know. I had to do a traceroute and a reverse traceroute and then paste the results to their network engineering department via email. The phone support crew thought I was crazy, but soon as the engineers got my email they fixed my issue and credited my account. Hell, their phone support was saying "Well if it still gets to the internet then there really isn't a problem, or maybe it was my computer.


Anyways, SOHO (small office/home office) or home marketed routers are only meant to run between 2-5 years. Wireless technology has been upgraded since then so you might as well upgrade to a new one if you continue to have issues.

PS: The game is pretty easy compared to NFS3 Hot Pursuit and I lost count on how many police cruisers I'd T.I.P into breaking them down on a wall or took them out with a ramp or hill jump. I think I counted 9 before I got bored. Also, I almost freaked out when I lost to the leader in the blacklist. I was like no he did not just mess with my car.
