		<itunes:summary>Where's the podcasts?

Well, I've been negligent in putting out a show lately. I just haven't felt much like it since the holidays for some reason. I don't know how I did it while I was working, but it just seems to be a whole lot of work even for a retiree.
I often do a lot of the final work on the show right on my kitchen table. That's less than an ideal situation. First of all, I have to set everything up and take it down to work around the family dining.

On top of that, I tend to work when no one else is around the house so that it's quiet. During the holidays, that was almost never. Even the late nights were busy with school out. (My wife worked for the school district and one son is a college student.)

I don't have any back material for a full show anyway. I should be out there collecting more, and there have certainly been some great opportunities, but between finances being tight and $3.00+ a gallon gas, I just haven't felt much like traveling to Buffalo that much. But it's more than that. It's just the winter blahs. I've even passed on a good band here in Lockport.

Now, things are looking up cash-flow-wise, but I'm in the middle of another demanding project - the High School Robotics Team I work as an advisor to. We're in the midst of building this year's robot and are working six days a week on it for the next five weeks. Not much time left for much else. Once again. I'm wondering how I did it while working. (The answer was, in part, vacation time!)

But I have been toying with an idea for another podcast about local music in a shorter format. I have quite a bit of material saved up for it. I won't let the cat out of the bag on that just yet, but I think it will be a lot of fun when it gets going.

Anyway, a sure way to get the winter podcast blahs out and get excited about podcasting again is Podcamp Toronto. I'm planning on going again if money and schedule allow. Last year's PCTO was a great event and I met a lot of interesting podcasters. I'd like to get back there again for the second edition.

The audio file in this post is a promo for Podcamp Toronto put together by Peter O'Connel of Audio O'Connell Voiceover Talent who was a guest speaker at last year's Podcamp and incidentally, based in Buffalo! I enjoyed meeting him there. This year, he's a proud sponsor of the "unconference."

This Time Of The Year - Gretchen Schulz and Doug Morgano

Gretchen is a local treasure. A real talent and pretty well known for her work with the Pine Dogs (http://www.pinedogs.com/pre97/news/gretchen.html) yet, she doesn't have a website of her own. I did find the videos at the top of the page.

Who Wants To Cry At Christmas - Mark Weber

Mark is a local Christian Music promoter who usually is sending me information about various shows for the calendar (wnypodcast.com/calendar) but he sent this song out for the season. Link: http://www.markjweber.com/

Christmas Must Be Tonight - The Dady Brothers

Link: http://www.dadybros.com/ The Dady Brothers are familiar to you if you've been to any of the Irish Festivals. They're a very versatile and talented duo and I really like this song I found on another compilation CD. They play frequently at the Shannon Pub with shows coming up January 4 5

Huron Carol - Nan Hoffman and Joe Turmino from the CD Celebrations of the Heart

Nan lives on Grand Island and is well-known for her shows at schools and churches. She played recently in an annual Christmas concert here in Lockport and I had hoped to record some songs live, but she asked me to play the CD instead. Link: http://www.nanhoffman.com/

Christmas In The Trenches (John McCutcheon) - Nan Hoffman and Joe Turmino - Celebrations of the Heart

The show was supposed to end here, but at the last minute, I found some local Christmas music videos on You Tube... The videos are at the top of this posting, but I put the audio from one in the show:

<itunes:summary>I recorded the Buffalo Chips recently at their Fall Jam concert at the University of Buffalo Student Union on Nov. 17, 2007. I heard of the Chips not too long ago and thought they'd be a fresh, different sound for the podcast. I hope you enjoy their music as much as I did.

When you meet them, they're just a bunch of your average college kids, casual, irreverent, always kidding around, and when they step on stage that really doesn't change. They have as much fun there as anywhere. But when they sing, wow! This doesn't just happen. A lot of hard work and practice must have gone on.

Spokesman Mike Jankowski explained it during our interview. The Chips are not just a bunch of guys who sing, they're a competitive singing group who in the process of practicing, touring and competing become a group of close friends. That was apparent during the performance when they took time to honor a past member and a member who is about to leave, and invited past members to join them on stage for a song. Quite a number of them were there.

From their website:

"The Buffalo Chips is UB's premiere all-male a cappella group founded in 1995, consisting of a dozen guys. The original members still tell tales of the first ever Valentine's Day show in February of 1996, and traditions of entertaining full houses, Rubber Duckies, and after-show party excellence dating back just as far. To this day, the Chips continue all of those traditions, and do some other stuff as well. They sing everything from rock and pop to jazz and funk. Add a dash of humor and you have a Buffalo Chips concert. The Buffalo Chips: Entertaining since 1995."

The Chips are planning to compete in the International Championship of Collegiate A'Cappella Mid-Atlantic Region. Let's wish them luck.

Set list:

Good Old A Cappella [Soul To Soul] - writing credit for this song goes to a whole bunch of people: Albert Brumley, Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, O. Nevada, Sister Rosetta Thorpe, Brunner, Spivery. I couldn't find a lot out about the song, but it's obviously an old style Gospel tune!

Africa - Toto.

Beautiful Day - U2

Beautiful Girls (Suicidal) - Sean Kingston. If you're not familiar with the song check out this awesome video.

Brandy - Looking Glass - Elliot Lurie

Interview with Mike Jankowski

It Don't Have To Change - John Legend

White Shadows - Coldplay

What Goes Around Comes Around - Justin Timberlake

This Is How A Heart Breaks - Rob Thomas

You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon

Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Freddie Mercury-Queen

Saturday Night Is All Right For Fighting - Elton John, Bernie Taupin

Interview with Daniella of Ladies First MSU

Happy Ending - Mika (Ladies First)

Everybody Runs - Butterfly Effect

----

My thanks to the Buffalo Chips and UB for letting me record the show. To Ladies First for their cooperation and allowing me to include them in the podcast.

The University of Buffalo also has a womens a'cappella group called The Royal Pitches. They have a concert coming up on November 30. Details on their web site:

<itunes:summary>After two years of promises, I finally got together with The Dustmen to do a podcast.

I've known Russ and Brian since before they formed The Dustmen. We all were fans of the former celtic band Kilbrannan and used to all be at the same shows. In fact, encouragement from Kirk McWhorter of Kilbrannan and now Penny Whiskey, was one of the things that got The Dustmen started.

Of course, we discuss some of the history of The Dustmen in the interview portion of the show.

The Dustmen are a Celtic-Folk band that plays a mix of traditional Irish, Folk, and original songs. Russ' banjo give them a distinctive sound that not many other celtic bands have. Along with that there is Liz's fiddle playing and Brian's guitar and vocals to fill out the sound. Drummer Harry has just the right touch to keep the beat without overpowering the rest of the band.

The Dustmen are:
Russ Scinta - banjo, guitar, vocals
Liz Scinta - violin/fiddle, guitar and occasionally drums!
Brian Quigley - guitar, pipes/whistles, vocals
Harry Linton - drums
