one of the tiny annoyances with my Droid is that when you send an email, line breaks are added to ensure mobile compatibility (or something like that). where the problem arises is when I post via email to flickr, the linebreaks carry through to the post. minor formatting issue, but something that has impeded a new design. this post should parse out sans line breaks.

Last week, Valve discreetly released a series of teaser posters across the web, pointing to an eventual release of Steam and the powerhouse titles like Half-Life, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Portal for OSX. My interest was peeked, but there wasn’t any word on when. Clues pointed to the second half of 2010, when Portal 2 is slated to drop… nobody expected we’d get access as soon as APRIL!

March 8, 2010 – Valve announced today it will bring Steam, Valve’s gaming service, and Source, Valve’s gaming engine, to the Mac.

Steam and Valve’s library of games including Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series will be available in April.

“As we transition from entertainment as a product to entertainment as a service, customers and developers need open, high-quality Internet clients,” said Gabe Newell, President of Valve. “The Mac is a great platform for entertainment services.”

“Our Steam partners, who are delivering over a thousand games to 25 million Steam clients, are very excited about adding support for the Mac,” said Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve. “Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play.”

“We looked at a variety of methods to get our games onto the Mac and in the end decided to go with native versions rather than emulation,” said John Cook, Director of Steam Development. “The inclusion of WebKit into Steam, and of OpenGL into Source gives us a lot of flexibility in how we move these technologies forward. We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Updates for the Mac will be available simultaneously with the Windows updates. Furthermore, Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth. We fully support a heterogeneous mix of servers and clients. The first Mac Steam client will be the new generation currently in beta testing on Windows.”

Portal 2 will be Valve’s first simultaneous release for Mac and Windows. “Checking in code produces a PC build and Mac build at the same time, automatically, so the two platforms are perfectly in lock-step,” said Josh Weier, Portal 2 Project Lead. “We’re always playing a native version on the Mac right alongside the PC. This makes it very easy for us and for anyone using Source to do game development for the Mac.”

Maybe all my friends are just a little bit whorish, or maybe just mobile promiscuity is catching on, but I'm always being asked if they can get Grindr in the Market. Grindr is the premiere geo-locational guy finder app for gay/bi men, simple profiles, simple communication, but apparently effective. And alas, up until recently, Android has been left of out the "guy-finder" app category, until now. Encountr, Android's first native locale-based-boy-radar has just been released. First opinion? It can only get better...

Today was hectic. Three staff almost lost their lives today. Gurl. One
barged in to call from my phone, knocking over some of my vinyl in the
process. Then, as I’m losing my mind dealing with coworkers over the flow of
a program when two more barge into my crowded room to ask me to take photos
from a camera they had and emailed to them, real ASAP like. Grr.

My old Jacket was mysteriously given away from Coat Check Saturday at the
club… and while it may have been carted home by a drunken co-worker, I
need some warmth in the meantime. This is the third year in a row I’ve
gotten a coat from Guess, the first peacoat style… and it has 9 fucking
pockets. My old Guess coat had 6 pockets, and in my OCD way I memorized the
weight and feel of certain items in each pocket. That way I can shift my
weight and feel if I have my keys, Droid, etc. Now I have 9 pockets, and
they aren’t as easy to get to as before… Ill be double,triple checking
myself for a while. If you see me, I’m not going crazy, I just can’t feel my
stuff. Yea.

This year, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, was much like CES this year, full of new ideas, new faceplants, and some very sexy mobile devices. While Adobe was selling their relevancy to the mobile world, and HTC was flaunting a sexy unibody Android phone, Microsoft was the breakout kid this time around.
