Frozen Watermelon Snorfles

Aldi had seedless watermelons for 3.99. I bought one and gutted it this morning and put the bowl in the freezer. These frozen chunks are better than popsicles and are better than paletas. I gave the bunnies a few slivers of the pale pink fruit from close to the rind with their breakfast greens (less sugar). Meany Girl is not an aggressive eater, so before she could grab a slice, Fatty chased her off and snorfled it all. I think she did get the last piece I gave her and I went ahead and added some of the juice that came off the pink and rind in their water crock. Even Simon and Bug got a watermelon chunk treat.

Frozen watermelon chunks are a super way to stay cool by lowering your core temperature in a tasty, healthy way. Forget popsicles! Freeze watermelon! You can put all the chunks into a large bowl and stick it in your freezer, but do not pack any of it. Just let the chunks sit loosely on each other so they wont freeze rock solid together. The natural sugar content should prevent the chunks from freezing rock hard. And you don't have to mess with food processors and molds.

Oh, my Bug is a nasty little pretty pretty princess! She licks Spider The Cat's butt after he poops, she digs in the cat box for crunchy covered brown morsels and digs in the bathroom wastebasket! Pretty pretty princesses just should not do stuff like that! EW. And she knows she shouldn't do those things because she sees us see her doing them and those ears get plastered to her head, she gets the guiltiest look on her face and runs off before we can even scold her. Today she had a chunk of cat poop ON A BASKET OF CLEAN LAUNDRY, just munching away. When Josh yelled at her and she jumped out, a little piece of her "yummy treat" went flying out of the basket. She ran up to it at the same time I am running to get it off the floor and we play a game of pick-up-poop, which she wins. She grabbed it and happily ran into my bedroom with her prize. I come running after her before she can jump on the bed with it. When I lay down for a minute, she has the NERVE to run up to me like she is just the perfect little doll baby and tries to LICK MY FACE.

It was my day to at Heartland Rabbit Rescue. These girls all fought over my attention til I went in there and sat down. I guess they were very unimpressed with my digging in their sand pit. They should not have such high expectations from humans. I guess I showed them.

A Quiet Reflective Memorial Day

We usually go to the cemetaries on Memorial Day and put out flowers and toys at the graves of loved ones, mow and weed-eat. But I am on-call this weekend so we stayed home. It was nice. Other than calling my mother to see if she was going to hand out flags for the vets' families and graves, we did not even get one phone call. I hope I did not jinx myself, the day is not over yet. My mother said that she does this service every year and the younger people just want to sit around, bbq and drink beer. She said that she was tired this year and the whipper snappers need to get off their butts and do their duty and stop expecting the older vets to do everything. She was also pretty mad last year because the Catholic cemetaries do not allow American flags to be placed at the graves of veterans.

SOO we just watched the new episode of Game of Thrones and did...well...nothing. I am not sure what happened to the day...

I did get a few pics of Bug and Spider snorgling each other. Spider is nursing on Bug's neck, as usual, and she just lets him slobber all over her. Eww.

A Lazy Sunday/Bunday

One of my favorite cartoon series is Avatar: The Last Airbender. I got sad when the series ended, just like I got sad when Harry Potter was all grown up. lol. I get that way finishing a good book or televison series (Arrested Development). When I finished reading The Farseer and Tawny Man books by Robin Hobb, I was miserable. But she has other books of course, and I lost myself in the Soldier Son and Reindeer People stories. So when my husband asked if I wanted to watch the new Avatar series, I was Avatard happy again. We watched all the episodes that have aired so far. Yes, I am a geekazoid, come on and wind me up...

Meany Girl Bunny and her hunny bunny got a bit of fresh grass today. They ate it all up. I wish I could let them go outside to enjoy the mornings and evenings, but I am too afraid of insects and birds of prey. Maybe when the weather cools in the fall...

How do you like babyboy's haircut? She kept barbering him and I noticed her poops getting smaller and smaller with wool in them, so I knew she was suffering a little wool block. I just gave him a haircut and gave her some lettuces with extra virgin olive oil and some of her favorite baby food treats like pears and apples with cherries. She is pooping better now. Only bunny people would understand the obsession with poop!

Can ANYONE tell me what kind of flower this is? I guess it must be a weed, but the blooms are very pretty.

I had tried to take pictures of a moth. Since reading A Girl of the Limberlost , I have been more appreciative of moths. I loved that book, by the way.

We just had ourselves a lazy Sunday. I guess we could have gone to the church picnic, but I woke up too late...

Bug Bath

My baby girl was getting a bit stinky. She actually started smelling like a dog. SHE AIN'T A DOG! She's a bug. My bugbug. I just brought her into the shower with me and washed her pretty. She is so soft and goodsmellums now. I was surprised she didn't go bugnuts on me.

Mr. Bubbles had to dry her off and she fell right to sleep after burying herself under a pillow and a blanket.

I contract with a company in NY that provides after-hours collection for drug screens and breath alcohol tests. My counterpart here in OKC is off for the next week and I am getting all the call-outs. I love it, I love my job! But I have been gone a lot between collections and errands. It has just been too warm to drag Ms. Bug along. Mr. B says she just cries and whines when I leave. When I come back, she attacks me. So I have been feeling a bit guilty like I am neglecting her. I got her this Hello Kitty Ty beanie toy. She loves it.

I found this Ty beanie octopus at a yard sale. OH does Ms. Bug LOVE this toy. It is bigger than her but she is tough and does not let EightLegs get the upper hand in a fight.

Man, I am tired. I feel like I am living on energy drinks and other assorted caffienated beverages! But hey, if I get called out, I am happy to go!

Bunnies Rule. Literally

The bunnies have it made and it will be a cold day in hell before I let them be terrorized by anyone. So I got medieval on Ms. Bug for barking and nipping and she did not like it. She curled up on my bed and shivered. I have NEVER yelled at her like that and she was surprised. She was so distraught that when I was done cleaning the pen, I came into my bedroom and she cried because she wanted me to come lay down with her for her nap. She is such a baby. I do not feel the least bad or guilty that I verbally tore her a new ass, either. The rabbits have no recourse if Bug is after them. She needs to learn that bunnies rule, not Ms. Bug. The other dog sure knows it.

x-pen made with closet cubes from Target. I had to put two pieces of plywood at the edges to keep Fatty from pushing the pen walls away from the house walls.

The bench in the corner is a place to sit under and on top of. I have THE SOFTEST area rug in the universe doubled up on top for comfort. If I didn't know better, I would swear this rug was made from rabbit fur.

Notice that where there is extra height at the bench and the hidey box I trippled the grid to keep them from jumping out. I guess we will see if it works.

Hay basket, food bowl, water bottle. All at the opposite corner from the litter hay tray. Puppy training pads are the best. I use one to line the litter tray. I just pull it out when it's time to clean the tray. I put another one underneath the tray, which is sitting inside a longer tray, to soak up any leaks. They are pretty clean bunnies, though.

My SWEET BABY BOY!!! I luvs HIM! Hims so HANDSOME! Standing on his hind legs. As the base for the pen, I use a flannel-backed vinyl tablecloth, vinyl side up. I then have a sheet on top of the tablecloth and store bought rag rugs on top of the sheet. Very soft and comfy for my buns. I have a burlap bag at the end of the pen where the litter tray is and covering the litter tray's tray, there is a one of those toilet-area rugs shaped like a U.

Meany girl. She is a pistol. Ain't she just pretty pretty, though? So prim.

The "happy"? Couple.

Look at her sticking her fat nose into the grid! I had to get the hay basket because she kept pulling out the hay onto the floor! I think she secretly wants to be a bunny. Can't blame her. I want to be a rabbit, too, sometimes.

Oh my girl loves her toys. There you see her Flutterby the Butterfly, Stinky the squeaky bunny, Egg the Hippity Hoppity Bun (she smeared scrambled eggs all over it), Bug Eyed Bunny, Aquatot, Hawkgirl Tot (Sonic Wacky Pack Justice League kids toys), Cat Mouse the cat toy, her memaw's pink slipper and the stuffed snaky thingy with the ribbon that I made for her.

I had a video, but Google is being a butt about getting uploaded. It was cute. She was growling and snapping at her toys and trying to kill them. Pretty Pretty Princess wants to mangle something, so adorable.

Bug in the Popcorn Bowl

Mr. Bubbles and I went to see 21 Jumpstreet. We had a to leave a little early to stop and get Mr. B. some Sudafed. Springtime is getting to everyone and I have a houseful of snotty noses and sinus headaches. I was going to sneak my Bug into the movie theater but Mr. B was being all "Um NO" about it. I felt guilty for leaving her home for so long. Though she is not so tiny as when we first brought her home, I still do not trust our bigger dogs to be gentle with her. They are too old and cantankerous to be trusted with a hyper little bullet of a dog like Bug. I was going to leave her in our bedroom with the door closed but she would go bugnuts and start howling if left alone. I got my oldest to Bugsit. Whenever I go to a store, I look for cute little stuffed toys for Bug. I found a bug-eyed Ty beanie bunny at Walgreens. This makes bunny toy number three for her.

I filmed her playing with the bunny toy and at one point, she stared at the camera and started backing up on the bed and fell right off into a popcorn bowl sitting on the floor. Excuse my very untidy bedroom!

Then I had to comfort her and put her down for a nap.

I should get a video of Bug trying to get Mr. B. to scratch her belly with his chin whiskers. She throws herself on his face and paws at his beard.

Bug Bag aka ByeBye Bag

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I was going to convert a canvas tote into a doggie carrier. Well, I found an old quilted bag I bought at Wal Mart a long time ago that came with a matching comforter and pillow shams. The material was very cheap and the comforter turned into other things long ago and the shams are now Bunny Blankies, but I kept the tote intact. Until today.

As you can see, it is very roomy and large enough for a full grown chihuahua, or other toy dog. The handles are long enough to throw over my shoulder and keep Bug at waist level. Now to convert, upcycle, or retrofit (pick your phrase) this bag.

First, I cut a hole in the middle of one of the side panels. This will be for Bug to poke her head through.

I added binding to the pokey.

I have a confession. I HATE using pins when sewing. I know my work would be much more even and professional looking if I used them. I tend to free hand my sewing because I end up sticking myself. It is a fear of mine and I hate when it happens. I do have some Clover Wonder Clips and I love them, but for tight work like the pokey hole here, they would not work well. So as you can see, the sewing is quite erratic.

Next, to add a zipper.

Talk about retrofitting. This bag was not designed to have a zipper. But with some determination and good ole Ameri-CAN DO tude, I got that sumbitch on.

I am going to have put a little oil on the zipper. It is a very very old one I got at a thrift store ages ago with about 100 other zippers. It was brown, just the right color and the perfect length. I just top stitched it on along the top seam. I did not use a zipper foot. Unless I was going to take this bag apart, I had to be innovative. No, I absolutely was NOT going to take this bag apart. If I had the gumption to do that, I might as well just make a tote from scratch. Now why would I do that when I have bunches of serviceable bags just laying around waiting to be converted/upcycled/retrofitted? LOLs at Internet crafter jargon....

Now all this bag needs is a few outer pockets for my own personal stuff like keys, wallet, phone and such. I had a fat quarter and a fat eighth in coordinating colors that have been hanging out in my stash for a bit.

This fat quarter is from Oklahoma Quiltworks in Oklahoma City. I have never visited, but my mother shops there frequently. She usually asks me if I need something and will pick up a fat quarter or two or three or ten for me.

Just free handed this pocket and top stitched it on using the peach for a lining and hem. I divided the pocket down the (sort of ) middle. All this sewing was a little bit of a pain as the bag was already put together, but it is a big bag and easy to scootch all the extra cloth out of the way for my Nancy Zieman sewing machine (tried to find a link for it, but can't find one! It's not even on the product inventory where it was purchased.)

So... I cannot just toss her into the bag. It needs a supportive bottom for her to stand, sit and lay on. Let's recycle. We had donuts this morning.

I took both the top and bottom of the box and folded them on top of each other.

I measured (eyeballed) whether the box would fit the bottom of the bag. Yup, just the right length.

Using a very technical method, I secured the boxes into the rectangular shape I wanted.

I wrapped a long piece of fleece 'round and around the box. This makes it very pillowy and soft.

I manipulated it into the bag bottom. Fits snugly.

Butt-Hurt Bug

Poor Bug! I custom made a collar just for her. She hates it. She hates being dressed up. Sure, shake a blanket at her and she is ready to snuggle. Just don't try to put clothes on her!
I had made her a little friendship bracelet style collar a few weeks ago and my parents gave me another lecture on choking and collar safety. Did I mention I am 37 years old and still getting lectures? I will just take it as proof that my parents still love me...??? OK, OK, so it was not very safe to tie a bunch of string around her tiny neck. I deserved the lecture.
SO... I decided to rethink my collars for Bug and here is the following checklist:

Safe? Velcro closure. Check
Cute? Has bugs, a bow and bobble. Check
Handmade? By me. Check.
Versatile? I have a large stash of cute fabric for more collars. Check
Comfy? Very lightweight and soft. Check
Does Bug approve? HELL NO. Five out of six ain't bad.

Bug is a very intelligent dog. She knew something was up when I measured around her neck. Somehow, she always knows when I am about to put something on her. Clever girl. Now she is all butt-hurt and has buried herself under the blankets and will not give me kisses. She sure is giving me the stink-eye.

Just a tube of fabric. Add Velcro for the closure. Used a honey colored cotton quilt thread to secure the honey bee charm and a bit of red ribbon.

Isn't she a pretty pretty princess? My sweet little girl!

My next project for her is to bind a lightweight blanket of flannel. Fleece for winter, flannel for summer. She goes almost everywhere with me and I don't want her to get chilly.

I am going to make a tote bag to carry her around. I have an idea to use a canvas tote and retro-fit it ( I love that word...retro-fit) or upcycle it (not so much liking the word upcycle) so that she can be carried comfortably and still remain contained within. Usually when we go someplace, I wrap her in a blanket and carry her like a baby. She conks right out. Anyway, I will do a tutorial if it comes out OK.

A Bug in Longhorn Country

My oldest son was staying with his girlfriend in Dallas this last week. Today we drove down there to pick him up.

The thought of being in Texas scared the piss out of her, LITERALLY.

At the scenic turnout by Arbuckle/Turner Falls/Davis area. Babygirl had to pee so bad she tumbled down the hill and got lost in the tall wet grass.

See that tiny whitish speck in the middle? That's Bug. Thankfully it was too cold for the snakes to be out and about. But not the hawks and buzzards. That occurred to me as I filmed her running through the grass back up the hill towards us. I was watching the sky closely.

Ugh, this is the first pack of smokes in almost a month. Driving out of state makes me nervous. I won't lie to you. That cigarette was yummy.

Phew. Rest stop potty break. Heading north back home.

That white speck in the middle of the field is Bug. She is SO tiny. No, I was not too far away from her, that was my camera doing a wide shot. That truck scared the crap out of her when it was downshifting and she was a little chi-bullet right to me.

Bug made a new friend at the rest stop. This nice lady saw me coming her way with Bug and stopped to talk to me. She said she had chihuahuas all her life but could never afford a teacup like Bug. I told her Bug was not a teacup chi and not quite three months old yet, but she insisted that based on Bug's paw size, my baby wouldn't get much bigger than four pounds. FOUR POUNDS. I guess she would know, having had chihuahuas all her life.

Vechnaya Pamyat--Eternal Memory

Not this day, but several days before, Bug went a knockin'
On Death's Door....
No, not really. My sister in law suggested a visit to the cemetery where her and my husband's beloved and very much missed aunt is buried. It started out as a jest. Their other aunt and cousin had gone to the cemetery several years earlier to pay respects. My husband's family belongs to the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma and have a very deep reverence for the resting places of their dear departed. It is not uncommon for families to come several times a month to place flowers, toys, and other markers on the graves. Well, this one particular aunt and cousin said that when they visited the grave, they took many pictures of the cemetery. When the films were developed, there were faces of babies and small children on the photos. All along the roadside fence line there are graves of infants and toddlers dating back to 1910 and 1918. A lot are from 1918 when the big flu hit. There are so many infant graves from that time period in all the tribal cemeteries across Oklahoma. So Jackie, my SIL, wanted to go on a ghost hunt. We drove down to Carnegie the next morning. Of course, my Bug came along. No way I was leaving her out of this "spookventure".

...to the humble and forgotten graves. Notice the cobblestones. Many of these can be found in tribal cemeteries in southwest Oklahoma, used as inexpensive markers. Cobblestones were used in many structures.

We went for ghosts. This blur in the dead weeds is the only one we found. I think it's pillow fluff.

What turned into a ghost hunt ended up reminding us how much we missed aunt Sas and everyone else. We left quiet and sad. Maybe Jackie and I are like the monk on Eric The Viking. We are too Christian to see the Other Side of The Veil. Trinitarian Formula Baptism (Father, Son, Holy Ghost) short-circuited our otherworldly spiritual receptors. LOL. Or maybe we should go back at night! We were wishing to win the lottery and then we would be ghost hunters across Oklahoma. There are A LOT of places we could go and investigate the paranormal. Definately some more adventures to follow. Maybe the Rainy Mountain school, or the Battle of the Washita...lots of places...

A Blustery Day

Oklahoma weather...If you don't like it, just wait five minutes and it will change. The weather has been gorgeous lately. The daffodils are out, the birds are twitterpated. Today there was rain, hail, high winds and it was so cold. Our heater is acting up and we are all cold. Poor Bug is sleeping under my hoodie and she finally just stopped her shivering. She HATES her pajamas that I made yesterday. It is an adorable fleece number that she manages to squiggle out of after about ten minutes of looking utterly demoralized. You know the Chi stare. So grumpy. I figure I am going to have to make something more snugly that she can move around in better without being able to stuff her hind legs under. She is a determined little booger. Nothing at the stores fit her. She is so teensy. She weighs about two pounds IF that.
But I am too cold today and getting a bit ill so I am cuddled up with her watching her Big Daddy, Mr. Bubbles , play Battlefield. Bug is his Little Sister.
I said that I was going to post some pics of Bug's buddies. I need to get a picture of her evil brother, Rex, or as I call him, CHIHUAHUASAURUS Rex. He looks just like her and he belongs to my mother-in-law. He is a meany and spoiled more than Bug, only he is spoiled ROTTEN. She is spoiled sweet.
My parents have a cockatoo named Clover. She is spoiled rotten as well.

You will see in the photos that she has on what looks like a Kevlar breastplate. Well, she is a rescue bird that tends to self mutilate. This works very well to prevent her from tearing at her flesh while allowing her mobility. She can stretch her feathers and even fly a bit when she hops off her perch in the den. If you know a self mutilating bird, email me and I would be happy to give you directions on how my mother made the plate. I might even do a tutorial!
She does not like stuffed animals or beverages in cans. I could go on forever about this little girl bird, but this is Bug's blog, not Miss Clover's. I might start one for her someday.
She tolerates Bug. That is no small thing. She is a bit (a whole lot) neurotic, even for a cockatoo. They tend to be a little bug nuts anyway. She is a lot bug nuts. That is what happens when people think they want an exotic bird and do not research them then make a purchase and end up neglecting, starving, abusing and treating them like crap (I think people get buyers remorse because of the expense and when the bird is not all pollywantacracker and acting the way the purchaser THINKS the bird should act then they take it out on the poor beast! People can be turds!) So that she likes Bug is pretty amazing. The day they met, she shared her food with Bug. Or maybe not. She did throw all her favorite (purple) crunchies at Bug who at them all up. But then she tried to clock Bug with an almond still in the shell. SO....???
Bug also loves to chase my parents' cats around. Talk about entertainment.

Beau. He craps bigger than her but he goes a'runnin' when she shows up. The first place she goes to at Memaw and Pawpaw's is their bedroom to look for slippers that need state secrets tortured out of them and chase the cats out from under the bed.

Well, we just got our dinner and she smelled taquitos smothered in chili (leftover night, just throw everything in the oven together, mmmmm). I better get her fed too.

She has many more friends. Stay tuned, we gotta get these basics out of the way so you can know Bug the way we know Bug. Just getting started!

Bug, My Gorgeous Baby Chihuahua

I am a dog person. Always have been, always will be. I have always had dogs as pets for as long as I can remember. Sure, I like cats OK. I would not call myself a cat person, but I do like cats. I love birds and bunnies to pieces, too. Never in my wildest imaginings would I picture myself the slave of a chihuahua. I have always been a fan of the big dopey dogs, or the kick ass dogs with bad reps and swore up and down that I hated little bitty ankle biter dogs with no use in the world other than to be hateful and yappy. Then on December 26, 2011, my friend and former coworker Hope announced that her chihuahua, ChiChi, had puppies. I do not know what black magic or voodoo or hoodoo spell she wove into those words, but I went nutso. I HAD to have a chihuahua puppy! From the pictures Hope showed on her iphone, I chose the little brown and white spotted beauty with the long, skinny melty heart on her head. She was not only the biggest puppy, she was obviously the smartest and most beautiful. Yes, I COULD tell just from a pic. I came up with many names between then and the day she was officially named BUG. Why Bug? I do not know. It was a suffix to endearments like Bed, Kissy, Rug, Snuggle, etc. All ending with Bug. So Bug stuck.
I brought my doll baby home on a very cold Sunday. She was going to be six weeks the next day. Not four days of having her and our lab, Simon, stomped on her little bitty head. Her head was so swollen, her eyes would not open and all she could do was scream. I do not mean cry. I mean scream. My husband called me at work and we met at the vet. She gave us the option of putting her down or getting her to a 24 hour pet ICU. She was given a steroid shot for the swelling and I could not take the screaming. I requested that she be put down. My husband said no, that she deserved a chance to live.
At the ICU, she was given pain meds and she calmed down. The next 24 hours would be critical and her fate would be decided within that time. We went home and the clinic called us every few hours or so to give a status update. The xray showed no fracture, she was on pain meds and sleeping with an I.V. and oxygen.
I picker her up on Friday after work. Bug was sent home with five days worth of pain meds which was to be given every 12 hours. I can tell you, that first night home, she got more than that. She whimpered and cried in her sleep all night. I held her in my arms and to my chest like a newborn babe and rocked her and sang to her and prayed over her. I prayed to St. Francis of Assisi, I prayed to St. Christopher, to St. Melangell, St. Michael, St. Anyone Who Would Hear My Plea. I called into work the next day. I was exhausted. About nine Saturday morning, she woke up, took two hops on the bed toward my husband and wagged her tail. I knew she was going to make it for sure. I called in to work that whole next week, and never went back. I needed to quit anyway for many reasons but did not have the guts. My little girl helped me do that. I was not leaving her for nothing. Throughout that week I massaged her facial bones to get the edema down, and I pressed on her eyes very gently to ease the pressure in them and on her sinuses, which would begin to drain with compression of her eyes. Finally only a funny looking bump on her head remained. She has a molera and I believe that is the only reason she survived the trauma as it allowed the skull plates to expand with the pressure. On Thursday, exactly one week later, I took her to my parents' house for an introduction. My dad likes the breed and has fond memories of his grandmothers chi named Bonnie, the sweetest dog ever according to him (her mate Clyde "was the most evil bastard ever, may he rot in hell"). I got a stern lecture from both parents about taking care of her (I am 37, still getting lectures). I do not know if my dad prayed for her or not. He is not on the best terms with The Almighty. However, that very night, that ugly alien lump on her head smoothed out completely. Her sinuses drained like mad and she sneezed and snorted all evening.
