Very uneventful day! The only delay was chores getting started (it was tree shedding day and there were tons of leaves all over the course) 

CIA: taking it light with two buggies out—six rolls for Equinox and five for Aurora

PiKA: , six rolls for Raptor, five for Banshee (Banshee didn’t get one for a last-minute goggles fogging issue. They also got called out by EMS for follow car-ring too speedy

Spirit: Spirit had one small stop today – zuke in front was going really slowly, so the flaggers threw stop flags for the back two to avoid any sort of a sketchy pass. Zuke had some time to get ahead, and mechanics from the follow car pushed the other two buggies through. They ended up with five rolls for kingpin and inviscid (lost one each from the stop) but only one the whole day for Zuke

SAE: It was SAE’s first day out! They ended up getting four safe and solid rolls

Fringe: Fringe never got more than one buggy out at a time. They ended up getting three rolls each for Bumper and Blind Faith 

DG: DG’s second day out! They seem to be doing really well, and got four rolls for Brazen. 

SigEp: Hydra

CIA: Kingfisher, Aurora, Tempest

PiKA: Banshee

Apex: Molotov, Solaris

SDC: Bane, Havoc, Vanity, Avarice

SigEp: Ended up scratching every roll despite staging and dropping successfully D:

CIA: Accidental pass between Aurora and Kingfisher at one point, but otherwise smooth day with 6 rolls for Aurora and Tempest and 5 for Kingfisher

PiKA: Only one buggy out; Pike was only five rolls because one of theirs had a controlled top due to a Spin Scooter maintenance guy crossing the course

Apex: Didn’t stick around the whole day, but four rolls each for Molotov and Solaris with Solaris’ rubbing issues seemingly resolved

SDC: Dropped all four buggies, only rolled Avarice once, Bane got 6 rolls and Havoc got 5

Spirit: Six rolls for each of KP and Seraph

Fringe: 5 rolls for just Baltic

DG: DG’s first day!! 3 very smooth bagged rolls for their new driver today, lots of excitement to see them out on the course

CIA: Emperor, Equinox

Started with normal rolls, went to rollarounds after twice around the roll order. 

CIA had a controlled stop w/ Equinox on the first roll (visibility), but otherwise had a smooth day with 13 total Emperor rolls and 5 for Equinox.

Apex got both Firefly and Phoenix to max fall carryover with 2 more Firefly rolls and 6 more Phoenix rolls

SDC didn’t stick around too long for rollarounds—Bane got four more rolls with some heating, Vanity rolled once, and Vice rolled successfully once before a minor crash in the bales due to a steering mishap. For the fourth time this year, SDC also got unlucky again with Bane getting uncleared at the top of the hill after being cleared due to a deer on the course by the lake.

Sunday, Spirit took full advantage of rollarounds, getting 9 total rolls for Seraph, 7 for Inviscid, and 11 for KP with no incidents.

Fringe got one roll for Baltic and three for Bumper. Blind Faith rolled once, but stopped for visibility issues.

PiKA: Banshee, Cleo, Raptor 

Apex: Molotov, Solaris 

SDC: Bane, Havoc, Vice, Vanity 

Spirit: Zuke, Kingpin II, Seraph, Inviscid 

Minor delays throughout the day due to Scaife construction crane-ing stuff over the course as well as a Quiz Bowl in Porter Hall that saw increased numbers of pedestrians. But all in all a relatively smooth day of rolls given how few teams were out. After today, every caped team has at least one driver/buggy pair at full rolls carryover for the fall for 13 total pairings at full carryover. 

Apex: Four rolls for Molotov and two for Solaris—some brake and harness rope rubbing issues on Solaris that slowed it down in the chute, but other than that no incidents. 

SDC: Vanity’s axle fell off in the first roll (she had visibility issues due to the construction lights and clipped the outer chute bales) and was scratched the rest of the day, but the other three buggies comfortably got 2 rolls in each. 

Spirit: Unfortunately, Inviscid never hit the course, but Seraph and KP each got 3 rolls and Zuke got 2. 

PiKA: Three rolls for each of Banshee, Cleo, and Raptor with no issues or incidents!

FANTASY BUGGY

Overview:

This year at Mini Raceday we will be testing your skills to see who can be the best chairperson! It’s time to prove you can build the best buggy team by participating in Fantasy Buggy. So, how does it work? The BAA will be timing each Hill time and free roll during rolls on Saturday November 6^th. You will build your team of 1 Buggy and Hills 1-5 to aim for the best time. Your score will be an aggregate of your selected team. If you’re in town and interested in helping with timing, reach out to willyclark97@gmail.com.

Using this link, you will be able to fill out your team and compete to win a Buggy Prize Pack. Submissions are free, but if you’d like to donate to the BAA we won’t say no 

Timeline:

• Fri Oct 29, 11:59pm: Game open to entries at this link
• Fri Nov 5, 11:59pm: All entries must be in
• Sat Nov 6, 7:30-9:00am: Homecoming rolls and times collected
• Sun Nov 7: Winner is announced and we will contact you for the best way to receive your prize

Rules:

• A “Team” will consist of 5 hills and 1 buggy
• Score to be calculated by best hill times of the day + org’s best free roll time of the day
• Each entry will be allowed to submit an alternate in the case that the org is a scratch or choose to not run the hill on that day (i.e., PiKA chooses to start at hill 2 so the alternate will be used for hill 1 time)
• Each org may only be represented once in the starting line up and once in the alternate line up (i.e., if you choose SDC for the Buggy, you CANNOT choose SDC for any of the Hills)
• All submissions that do not meet the rule requirements will not be eligible for the prize

BAR MEET UP

Friday Nov 5^th, 8:00 pm at Fuel and Fuddle

Some BAA Officers will be meeting up for drinks and to talk buggy at Fuel and Fuddle Friday night ahead of Mini Raceday. If so inclined, come down, say hello, share your favorite buggy story, and brag about why your Fantasy Buggy team will be the best.

The BAA will have coffee and donuts available for anyone coming out to see rolls. Come by to say hello, and enjoy coffee and a donut on us!

Around 8:25, one of Fringe’s buggies hit the curb to the right of the monument, just before the chute turn. The driver was partially ejected from the buggy and had to be brought to the hospital, but is fortunately fully recovered. The team and Sweepstakes is now taking a look at overhauling safety, and has been having debriefs with EMS, RadioClub and CMU Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) to see what needs to be done and what can be improved.

Any rule changes or new processes will be shared once students have had some time to do their debriefs and a thorough investigation. At this time, it is planned that rolls will resume the weekend of October 22nd so that Sweepstakes can put together a coordinated plan to take appropriate action. If anything changes we will keep you informed. Please direct all questions or concerns to news@cmubuggy.org.

Apex:

Apex took it easy today with just one buggy/driver combo out. No major issues there, which was appreciated as always.

CIA:

CIA has been coming in full force with four buggy/driver combos out each week. Congrats to them for also having four drivers at max carryover for rolls already!

PiKA:

PiKA had a relatively easy day with three buggy/driver combos out.

SDC

Other than some more geese on the course, SDC had a pretty straight-forward day.

SigEp

Barracuda also came to a stop on the course during its first roll, after the driver hit a grate due to some vision and steering issues. Kraken got two solid rolls, hitting max carry-over!

Spirit

Another easy day for Spirit! Four buggy/driver combos out, 1-2 rolls each.

Sweepstakes

During the second roll through the other two maladies hit the course at the same time: dense fog and a pack of hungry geese.

SDC was the first team to face this one two punch of terror. Bane came down the course without issue but unbeknownst to SDC, their buggy wouldn’t be the only Havoc on this roll. As the sinister green buggy raced through the fog towards the transition, the geese went rogue. Three of These Canadian mischief makers leapt off the monument and charged into the driver’s line, intent on bringing Havoc upon Havoc. Luckily the driver cruised to a safe stop before entering the octagon with the long necked, winged beasts.

The following driver in vanity was not spared from the blood curling fiends as she too had to scream to a halt, coming a bit close to havoc for comfort. The three waddling warriors were left to waddle across the street, then rolls were reset and Spirit was clear.

But the honking hounds were not yet finished with their horrifying plot. As Zuke thundered through the thickening Pittsburgh fog the geese attacked yet again, hurtling themselves off the monument into the road. She safely stopped to the right of the monument, as did the following buggy, sending the pack of geese into honks of victory. About this time a brave team of warriors was assembled. With weapons (brooms) high and adrenaline pumping, The crew swept in. Our heroes began the battle by brushing back the geese from their stronghold on the monument. Now on the streets, the geese were consolidated into a big “dust pile” where chaos ensued. Wings and feathers filled the air as the outmanned humans pushed valiantly to sweep the down filled demons back. Eventually a surrender was negotiated, with the ghastly geese hissing in rage at their embarrassing defeat as they sauntered deep into Phipps lawn

Unfortunately, once the issue of birds that shall not be named was handled, a dense cloud descended upon the course, rendering vision to a minimum. A hold was placed on rolls as no mere mortal can battle with the fearsome fog and come out alive. Our gladiators hung their heads in defeat, knowing Mother Nature had almighty power far beyond what they showed in The Battle on the Monument.

Apex:

All buggies got three rolls, no issues! New drivers in Solaris and Molotov graduated to bag less rolls with full push offs and handled it admirably.

CIA:

four buggies, two rolls each. Lots of people. Nothing exciting (which is a good thing on this day)

Fringe:

Two rolls each for Baltic and Bumper. Blind Faith (new driver) had two controlled stops— one for visibility issues due to fog and one for generally figuring out driver lines.
Last roll of the day she seemed to get lost around the transition but continued down. She seemingly recovered and continued down towards the turn at a very slow rate of speed. She either missed the chute flag or got confused and continued towards the barricade. Luckily, the very aware barricader moved into action and stopped the buggy just before it rolled under a car he had just stopped that had snuck through outer barricade. MVP of the weekend.

SDC

Havoc was back for SDC for the first time since 2016. They were fast and smooth the whole day save for being one of the teams to stop for geese (see above).

SigEp

Kraken got one roll, Barracuda rolled once but had a controlled stop due to visibility issues caused by road bumpiness

Spirit

All buggies got two rolls, controlled stops from Zuke and Seraph on second roll because of ADDITIONAL GEESE (see above).

Apex brought out their full fleet this week! Despite three new drivers out on the course, they had a STELLAR day with no stops

CIA

CIA had a pretty smooth day, other than a small hiccup during one of their rolls. Kingfisher came to a controlled stop near the monument due to vision issues and their follow car didn’t even notice! drove straight past.

Fringe

Fringe had three buggies out this weekend! Pretty smooth as a whole, no big issues.

PiKA

PiKA kept things easy today, with just Raptor out this weekend.

SDC

SDC came out strong this week! Four buggies, three new drivers. Zoom zoom
Vice is still 80% tape but we’ll just let that one go for now

SigEp

SigEp’s first weekend went off without a hitch! With only Kraken out, we can see that they’re trying to take things slow to start out. Hopefully we’ll see some more action from them later in the semester!

Spirit

Spirit came out strong for the second week in a row with four buggies and three new drivers.
