let's begin with what a web server is.

What is a web server?

A web server is a computer system that hosts websites. So what do you mean by websites? Simply it's a collection of web pages. So for example, when you open Amazon it's a website. It does not have a single web page but it has multiple web pages.

When you open the link, you will see the home web page. But, when you click on a product. The product web page comes up. There you will see multiple things, the image of the product, product information, and even recommendations.

So that’s a website and then any computer system can be a web server

The difference is that this computer system is running a web server software. For example, Apache HTTP web server. This is the most popular one today as of now. Then we have Microsoft IIS and some others.

So is this the only difference that a computer system and a computer system running web server software have? no, there is one more difference. The computer system needs to be connected to the internet in order to act as a web server. Otherwise, web clients cannot contact it through HTTP.

Connect it to the internet and it should be running a web server software.

Typically, web servers host multiple websites. Some only host a few while others may host several hundred but there are some dedicated servers also.

Based on that we will categorize a web server into two parts. The web servers host websites for multiple users. We call them shared hosts. There are some dedicated web servers that will be hosting websites for a single person or company. We call them dedicated hosts.

Which servers are shared and which are dedicated?

Let's say there is some personal website or some small website that does not have a huge amount of traffic. Then will host it on shared hosts. But if there is a huge website and it has high traffic, then that requires a dedicated server. Also, if the sites require custom server modification then it will go for dedicated hosts.

Now let's understand how this webserver works

How a web server works

If we have a web server then there must be a client whom the server is serving. Let’s call it a web client. This client sends an HTTP request to the webserver. It will request for some page or it will require some other resources. Typically, there are two possibilities that can happen when a request is sent. One, the requested URL or the page or the file that is requested is available with the webserver. Then it will immediately send an HTTP response with the file.

Another possibility may be, that the requested page or file is not present on the webserver. So it can look into a static database. A static database is a database the webserver can contact and fetch the file. There may be a scenario where the page is not also present but it needs some processing.

What this web server will do is, send a servlet request to the application server. A servlet is a server that serves business logic to application programs through any number of protocols. Web server exclusively handles HTTP requests. You can now see the application server coming into the picture.

What is a servlet? If you may be wondering, a servlet is a small java program that runs with a web server. Servlets receive and respond to requests from web clients usually across HTTP. These will be some java programs and will require some processing. It will send this servlet request to this application server to contact the application data store. SO that it can process or run this servlet. Then fetch some details from here and do further processing.

Then it will send a servlet response to the webserver and now this webserver has the response built-in. The web server will send an HTTP response back to the web client and this is how a web server works.

Take note that you will only require the application server when there's intense processing that a web server cannot handle.

One most popular web servers are the Apache HTTP servers. A rough estimate, 60 percent of the web servers run Apache web servers. You can install it on all operating systems including Linux, Unix, Windows, FreeBSD, Mac os, osx, and more. It's open-source software so all of these are related to its popularity that's why it's so popular.

2. Internet Information Services

Then we have internet information services or in short IIS. Microsoft IIS developed it. It runs on Windows NT 2000 and 2003 platforms. Tightly integrated with the operating system. It is also easy to administer.

Then we have some other web servers like LiteSpeed, Lighttpd, sun java system web server, and jigsaw server. There are a few more but those are not that popular. I hope we now have a good understanding of web servers. We also know the most popular web servers and how web server functions.

Let's quickly look at the application server

Application servers

The application server is a server that is specifically designed to run applications. As we had seen, this was coming into the picture when this web server did not have the request ready. It needed to run some java program to build the response. Because it's designed for running applications, it includes both hardware and software that provide an environment for programs to run.

Uses of application servers

Used for running web applications hosting a hypervisor that manages virtual machines. Hypervisors are software programs that manage one or more virtual machines.
Used to create a start, stop and reset virtual machines

Used for distributing and monitoring software updates
Also, processing data sent from another server.

Now we have some idea why we use an application server.

A webserver is designed and often optimized to serve web pages and not more than that. Therefore, it may not have the resources to run demanding web applications. That’s where the application server provides the processing power and the memory to run these applications in real-time.

It also provides the environment to run specific applications. For example, let's say a cloud service may need to process data on a windows machine. A Linux-based server may provide the web interface for the cloud service but it cannot run the Windows application. It can just provide an interface. Therefore, it may send the input data to a windows based application server.

If a web server is running on Linux but it cannot process some application that can only run on windows. It has to contact the application server which will be running on windows and then it will run that application. It may send input data to a windows based server. Then the application server can process the data and then return the result to the webserver.

Are you looking for ways to charge your website without chasing away customers?

In this post, we share how you can price your services. Why price them like that. And how you can model their success.

Hopefully, by the end of this article, you won’t be like other web designers. Who follows the myth that you should only charge a couple of hundred dollars for a website. Is it because you’re a beginner? Or you don't believe that businesses are going to pay that much? Trust me they will and they do.

Whether you are a beginner or not you should definitely be charging more than the myths. Let’s see why and how. Let’s get into it.

Pricing your services reasonably

One thing in your head you need to try and separate is that. Business money is very different from personal money.

When you're working with a business. They tend to have much larger budgets to pay for a website than you realize. This is one of their biggest marketing tools.

Pricing website design first and foremost you need to believe in yourself. You also need to believe in the services that you are delivering.

What to consider when pricing

As soon as you start second-guessing your worth or your capabilities. You're not going to charge your website as high as you should. But you should know there are always

small hiccups,
changes,
amends to make as you never really know what the clients like,
how difficult they could be on email,
Many times you have to communicate with them and
ultimately they take up so much time

So if you will overlook all these overheads, you're going to end up selling websites for a small fee. I guarantee you that no matter how exciting it might feel to win a website project at a small fee.

It's going to turn out to be the bane of your life. Because no project ever sorts of runs 100 smoothly or how we would imagine there are always these uncertainties.

All of those things you kind of need to take into account.

so first off, let's cover the multiple ways that you can charge for website design. I've got here the most popular ways to charge.

Multiple ways to charge for websites

1. Hourly rate

One way is an hourly rate. Actually, this works really well if you are a freelancer and you are contracted on a regular basis.

You could just charge an hourly rate and say. This is going to take three hours to do a small website change.

Or something like that and you can just charge them your hourly rate.

2. Per project

Next, we've got per project which is actually the most common now. There are a couple of ways that you can work this out. You can just have a fixed cost for a project.

Depending on the size, you could sort of package this up which I'm going to show you. You could package this up based on how many pages the website will have. Also the functionality, and essentially just have multiple pricing brackets depending on the level of complexity of the website.

You can also base this on average, how many hours you think a project is going to take. So take an hourly rate that you have established. Be it you know 50 to 100.

I don't think that's unreasonable for an hourly rate for website design. And then you basically say well I think this project is going to cost me 20 hours in time. Or 30 hours or 40 hours and you would come to a price like that.

3. Monthly retainers

Finally, you've got monthly retainers. Monthly retainers only really work for let's say hosting. Or if you had an ongoing maintenance package. We'll cover that a little bit more in the next couple of slides.

Here ultimately you've got a few ways that you can charge for website design. And you know you don't have to choose one. You can choose multiple ways. You can combine a fixed cost with hourly. If they want additional development it will be x amount per hour.

If they want ongoing maintenance then you would obviously just chuck that on at the end of the contract.

4. Defined packages

A. Basic Package

Moving on you can have different packages defined within your business and do as a model to work from in your company. You can have a basic package defined for those who have a very small budget that really can't afford the more custom-based services.

What they would get is a template or a theme from the likes of ThemeForest you would install that into a content management system and put together their content in a way that is correct for them in terms of images fonts, colors, and very basically customize it at a basic level.

They will get their domain name and their first year's hosting included and you give them some very minor training like sending them over a 20-minute video on-screen recording showing them how they can update the content of the website themselves and they find that really really useful.

B. Starter Package

Next, we've got the starter package. Basically includes everything from the basic package except this time they are using a fully custom design. This is where you'd go into Adobe XD and design a visual composition. Or visual layout based on their requirements. You would send over one to two-page Designs ready for them to sign off.

This also includes things like contact forms, and basic functionality, so people can send a consultation request or something from the website to their email address most do 800 pounds. Then the starter package is 1 500 pounds.

One thing you need to bear in mind within your web design business is what overheads you have in order to get the project done.

So you know obviously time is a big one and within my business currently, I still design the websites myself and that takes a fair bit of time you've then got to consider all of the client communication that you have.

Weekly calls, monthly calls, the initial consultation, requirement gathering, and then you've got all of the amends that come on top.

So amends for the design, the visual composition and then you'll have the men's amends for the development. Currently, within my business, I take care of the designs and then send them out to my sort of front-end developer who builds them in Elementor.

That's a cost that I've had to consider and I now sort of charge them to the project. So 1500 pounds for a basic website is not unreasonable and it's actually still very cheap for a lot of businesses.

C. Professional Package

Moving on we've got the professional package. This includes everything from starters but this time there are slightly more pages. We've got five to ten pages, and two to four-page template design. So I will put together two to four visual templates that will give them a real good sort of feel as to how the site will look like when it's built.

It kind of gives them that sense that okay this is the color scheme, this is sort of the layout, this is the brand or the business brand that's sort of been encompassed into the design.

You can utilize and manage to achieve that with just a couple of page templates you don't need to design a page template for every single page within the website. It's just a waste of time.

And then included in the professional package you've got things like custom content blog or portfolio and then finally the biggest package is e-commerce.

So this gets everything on the other three packages and 10 plus pages because an online store tends to be a lot more than just a blog or a couple of home about and contact pages. You've got all of the product pages that you need to consider as well. Plus you've got e-commerce functionality.

You've got the purchase process that you probably need to do on a basic level design just to show them what that would look like. And then you need to know how to build it.

On top of that, you've got all of the customer emails that come with e-com. So actually 3600 pounds is sort of like the entry-level for me and depending on how big their store is will depend on how much that figure increases,

Hopefully, this has given you a pretty sort of good insight as to what you can be charging within your web design business. Do consider all of your overheads and other additional costs that may come in. Whether it is software plug-ins, resources, additional development contractors, or all of that stuff.

5. Value-based pricing

so here we've got a base rate of sort of the pricing model that I tend to utilize in my business but one thing that you might want to consider is taking a more value-based pricing approach.

Value-based pricing is basically, pricing for a website based on how much value you think that website is going to bring a business.

So for example, what I tend to say is if you are working with a business and you think that this website is going to generate an extra 100 000 per year, based on the work that you've done for the website.

Then I don't think it's unreasonable to charge 5k for a website. You'll probably start thinking about who is going to pay that. For a business that's generating hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, a 5k website is going to be absolutely nothing for them.

So the bigger businesses you target, the more budget they tend to have, and the more you can actually sell web design services for the businesses. The smaller end of the scale tends to have a less budget so that's why these lower-end packages will probably be more beneficial for them.

Additional extras:

So you might think well, what do I do when the requirements are not as specific as we have in the packages. What I tend to do here is. If they have requirements that don't fit my packages, I will choose the best package that does fit them. Then I ask them. Will you have additional development on top or custom content?

And that is going to cost you an extra 250 pounds on top. It might be that you've got a portfolio as well as a blog. Or they've got something quite unique like a gallery.

Or just some very specific custom calculator or anything that's going to require either additional plug-ins or additional development time.

Then you basically just bolt on blocks of additional development time. So block I bought this on as additional 250-pound blocks depending on how many additional extras they have.

It could be an extra 250 pounds, 500 pounds, or 750 pounds on top of that initial website package that I've chosen for them.

On the right-hand side, here we've got website maintenance and support and website hosting so this kind of touches back onto the ongoing retainer, and actually what I discharge is 50 pounds per month for ongoing maintenance.

And this covers one to two hours of support each month. Anything on top of that they will get charged an extra 50 pounds for that month.

So they can buy bolts or blocks of time. If they wanted two to four hours a month. That would be a hundred pounds and that kind of increments up into 50-pound blocks.

Now I'm not suggesting here that you pull together packages and you make the customer choose.

Because I believe that we are delivering a Custom service. We need to make sure that the websites that we are delivering are fit for our purpose. And are going to help the business meet its needs and meet its goals.

So this is why I tend to keep the packages fairly loose. I always make sure that there is a way for them to get the website that they need. In order to start generating the revenue that they are looking for.

Conclusion: Best Ways How To Charge Your Website Correctly

So guys get going and have a look at your pricing. If there are two things I want you to take away from this is. One, don't have any limits and beliefs in what you're capable of charging or what you believe or perceive that a business will pay for a website.

Because pricing websites even from fifteen hundred pounds or two thousand dollars is not unnecessary. You know websites are a fundamental marketing tool for a business and they tend to have a shelf life of like two to three years.

Two thousand dollars is not much of an investment and the second thing I want you to take away here is understanding that web design packages are not an exact science by all means put together basic packages that you can reference within your business.

Every time that you have a customer on a call and you need to give them a price, you kind of have this package that you can sort of highlight. As well as the additional code blocks and you can send them over a price.

Please do not have limited thinking, the only way that you're going to be able to build a successful business is having the confidence to charge more and you should absolutely have the confidence to be charging at

least you know 1 000 or two thousand dollars for your website.

All right, so you want to get your website to the top of Google, which makes a huge amount of sense because Google traffic is incredibly well qualified.

Imagine that there are people out there searching for exactly what you do and looking to buy the thing that you offer.

There's no surprise, that getting traffic from Google is still such a big priority for businesses. No matter what goes on with digital marketing, no matter what happens with social media, no matter what happens with email and crazy different ad tech. Getting to the top of Google for many businesses is still their number one digital marketing priority because the traffic is so awesome.

So in this article, we're going to share the strategies that give you an overview of how to get your website to the top of Google today, and how Google actually works. If we can get into Google's mind, then we've got exactly what you need to do to get that ranking.

Get Your Website To The Top Of Google

So first thing, Google crawls websites and it's really looking to show the sites which are the best answer to the searches problems. Now this best comes with a bit of an asterisk because what is the best answer to a search's problem?

Well, the truth is the best changes, the best answer for someone looking for a quick piece of information is very different from the best answer for someone who's looking for an in-depth well-researched piece of content.

So the first thing to understand is the user intent of the particular term that you're trying to rank for. Basically, we want to create the content that best satisfies the searcher. In fact, while we're on definitions. Let's define how Google really works and understand the business model cause actually that gives us even more context.

How Google Works

So Google makes about $40 billion a year because you click on ads. Yes, when you click on those ads, Google makes the money that pays for all of the random, stupid stuff that they come up with.

So Google needs to keep you hooked on its search engines to keep you clicking on those ads. Now, in order to keep you hooked on the search engine, it needs to give you the answers to your questions very, very quickly. And a question could be, a question, or it could be just someone typing in a phrase.

It needs to give you the responses that are most useful to you as soon as possible, otherwise, you're going to go somewhere else. So that's what Google cares about the best. Not because Google has some deep purpose like organizing the world's information. It cares because it needs to keep you hooked using its search engine, so it can monetize your suite clicks.

User Intent: Concept for SEO

Now I wanna talk a little bit about user intent in more detail because this is a really fundamental concept for SEO. if somebody types in "red shoes free delivery," the intent there is typically to buy something, okay?

Over time Google is going to understand this, and it's gonna be showing pages where there is a commercial outcome on that page or you can buy a product from that page.

If someone searches for, "how to clean red shoes?" That is an informational search. So that's gonna bring up a completely different set of search results, mostly focused around longer-form content that is going to be information-rich, because that's what the searcher is searching for.

It's really important whenever you're trying to rank your website or a particular page for a term to check what Google thinks the intent of that search is. So is it showing really informational pages in the search results? If Google is showing really informational pages on the search results, you know that in order to rank for that time, you have to produce something which is informational.

If on the other hand it is showing really commercial pages for that term or you can buy, or you can become a lead, then that's what you need to do.

So it's important not to try and fight Google, but try and identify what it's already doing and then put yourself in alignment with that.

Okay, so obviously to get a website ranked or a web page ranked, we need to give Google exactly what it needs to do, if we play the game, we get the results, so this also means that Google doesn't have rules like every page that ranks on Google needs to have 2000 words, it's much more sophisticated than that.

Like we said, if someone's searching for something which can be answered very quickly, then the best answer might be something that is very quick. If someone's looking for something much more in-depth. The best answers are going to be longer, so it's all context-dependent.

The approaches that we take on pages with different user intent are completely different but they always need to match the user's intent. All right, great, so loads of concepts, no answers yet. Okay, okay, all right,

How To Rank Your Website Pages On Google

Let's talk about how to rank these pages then. First, understand that it's not just your homepage that ranks, this is really important. Every single page on your website can rank, and in fact, for many websites, actually it's the homepage that shouldn't be ranking for the majority of its keywords.

Remember that Google wants to serve the best answer to its visitors, and quite often your homepage is just basically an introduction to your business or an introduction to your website.

Actually, the deeper more useful information is on your sub-pages, so whether these are service pages. If you're a service or lead generation business or whether they're product or category pages, if you're an e-commerce business.

So the first thing to do is to get away from thinking about getting your website ranking. Start thinking about your web page ranking.

This is good news by adding lots of well-optimized pages to your site. Not only do you increase the chances that you're ranked for those relevant terms. Also, you increase the number of relevant terms that you can rank for.

Things To Think About To Rank

There are basically four things that you need to think about,

1. Relevance

firstly relevance. You're never gonna see a page ranking on Google that isn't relevant for the term that you've searched for. So if you're trying to rank content on your site for things that you're not actually relevant for, you're not actually offering, it's gonna be a bit of an issue.

2. Popularity

The second thing, is popular, if you're not being talked about if you don't have that credibility of being mentioned in other places on the internet, why should Google take a punt and trust you as being the best solution?

3. Authority

The third thing is authority, how well regarded are you in the space that you're in.

This is more important in certain niches than others, but your authority is becoming an increasingly important part of why Google is gonna justify ranking your pages.

4. Quality

And then the final thing quality, if the information on your site isn't great, if it's not fact-checked, if it's full of mistakes and errors if your site takes a long time to load, it's not mobile-friendly, it's full of broken links, this is not a good sign.

By far the single biggest SEO hack if you like, and it's not even a hack, where did all the SEO hugs go? What was happening to our industry?

It's to create more great content on your website. This is such a boring thing to be told, I know,

you're reading this article because you want the hacks. You wanna know where which keywords to put in your page title and what the keyword density of your first paragraph should be. And all this type of stuff. I know here, I am just saying, more content. I know it's really boring, but it's also really true.

It's also really difficult to do, okay? Creating lots of really good quality information on your site is a difficult thing, it's a time-consuming thing, and it might cost you quite a lot of money and time to do.

So in our experience just because you know that it's a good thing to do, doesn't mean people are necessarily doing it. So how do you actually go about this process?

Types or Categories of Keywords

1. Commercial Keywords

So the first thing to do whenever you're planning to write more content is to brainstorm your keywords. Now you've got a few different types of keywords

that you might want to write content for. The first type of keyword is keywords that would relate to your product or service.

Let's say that you're an accountant, you have tax accountancy, so you're going to have phrases that might be searched for, by someone who's looking for a tax accountant, for example, tax accountant, tax accountancy, a tax accountant for small businesses, tax accounts for enterprise, you know, whatever it might be.

So you're going to have keywords that relate to the thing that you do, or the subset of the thing that you do, okay? These are gonna be very commercial keywords. These are gonna be the keywords that you're gonna be optimizing your core service pages, your product pages for.

2. Problem-Based Keywords

Then you've got another category of keywords that relate to the problem that your audience has. A problem in the tax accountant example might be something like how to reduce corporation tax or how to save on company VAT, or how to plan for VAT bills or something like this.

So that person has a problem that you can solve, but they're not necessarily looking for the thing that you're offering, yet, okay? So these people are further up the funnel, they're not yet ready to buy from you, maybe, but they're the sorts of people that you want on your website because they would make good potential customers.

3. Potential Customers Related Keywords

The third type of keyword is even further up the funnel, so this is anything that's searched by people that might indicate that they're a good potential customer for you. So this could be if let's say we're a tax accountant this might be things like how to scale a small business.

Well, an accountant is gonna be an important component of that, but that person isn't searching for an accountant, in fact, they're not even searching for a problem

that indicates they need an accountant, they're searching for something bigger.

So we've got these three different levels of the keyword if you like, we've got commercial, which are the ones that are kind of I need this thing, then we've got the problem-based. So, I probably need this thing, but I don't know it yet. And then we've got the really informational stuff which is really top of the funnel and really broad.

Key Pages On Your Site

Core pages
Blog posts
Knowledge base/ Ultimate guides

Now we might want to write content for each of these three different types. Because we're going to have core pages on our website that target the commercial terms, and tax accountants.

We're going to have blog posts that might target the problems. For example, how to save money on VAT bills. Or how to save corporations hacks, or when you should be paying your tax.

And then we might have a knowledge base on our site. This would be like the ultimate guide to small business growth. Which is designed to get us loads of business owners onto the site. So that we can sign them up for email things and pitch them on accountancy further on down the line.

So once we understand that we've got these different types of customers. We can see how we might actually want different types of content on our website. And in fact, we're going to need different types of content on our website.

Google is gonna be looking to show different types of pages for each of those different searches. So the first thing we do is collect all of these ideas and put them in a spreadsheet.

Now, usually, you wanna prioritize your commercial keywords because those are the ones that most rapidly gonna turn into money. If you had to get any one of those individual customers onto your site, obviously you would choose the person who's searching for a tax accountant.

So they are going to be your top priorities. Your other types of keywords are going to be really useful for building up the visibility of the site. Also, building up your credibility, and picking up links as well. Which is going to help your authority. Also building up your topical expertise to help your ranking for those core commercial keywords, comprehend? So you've got what we call the key pages on your site,

If you're a service company or e-commerce business, these are your core pages. And these are the ones that you're going to optimize for your target keyword.

So for example, using your target keywords in your page title. Use your target keywords in your headings on those pages. Make sure they've got a good amount of information on each page using those target keywords and related terms. Then you're going to create content for the keywords that target customer problems.

So this might be writing long in-depth blog posts. It might be building out a knowledge base. Then you might want to optimize previous content that you've written for these phrases if the targeting wasn't that clear.

Optimizing Content For Google's Search Results Format

1. Showing Featured Snippets

Now, once you've created this content, the next thing you wanna do is optimize your content. Optimize for how Google is showing the information in the search results. Now you'll have noticed showing featured snippets.

These are like the bit of text that you see in the search results. And for a whole bunch of different informational terms.

Sometimes, if you search for the best website design you're probably gonna get an unordered list. It has just been lifted from someone's website and put directly in the search results. So that Google can show that information to the search or without them actually having to go on the website.

Now, if you're playing this game, if you're competing for search results. Where there's a featured snippet shown it's a good idea to try.

Now people get confused about featured snippets and think well, I don't really wanna get a featured snippet on Google. Because then Google's just gonna take the information from my site and show it in the search results. So no one's gonna come onto my site over the contract. Actually, you'll notice your click-through rate increasing from search results.

If you've got featured snippets people can see that the information is good. And they will want to read more detail about it as well.

2. Optimizing Your Metadata

The next thing that you want to do is optimize your metadata.

Now, the metadata on each page of your site guides what Google shows in the search results. When you search for something on Google. You see the blue links, and then you see the black text.

Underneath the blue links are usually your page title. So this is a piece of matter that you set behind the scenes on your site. Basically gives every single page on your site, a title.

This is also the thing that shows up in the tabs in your browser. Good idea to use your target keywords in your page title, particularly at the start. Then, when someone has searched for that term. They're going to see your title being that phrase that they've just searched for.

If I've just typed in something that my brain is tuned to, I'm most likely to click on the thing. Also, ones who write a compelling meta-description.

So meta-description is the black description text that Google shows in the search results.

Getting Other Websites To Link To Your Website

Whether it's gonna go away or not in the future, nobody knows, but right now links are making a difference. So what's the deal with things.

Basically, you need to get other websites to link to your website. This will show Google that you're an authority in your area. It's basically a popularity contest. How do you know who's popular?

It's because you look at how many people are talking about each other. You figure out who's talking about this person the most.

The most popular sites have the most authority in Google's eyes and tend to get the best ranking. So you need to play this game as well.

So those are the main ways to get to the top of Google. Firstly, understand how Google works and make sure you're playing Google's game. My number one tip above anything else is to get a web page ranked at the top of Google. Make sure that the page deserves to rank.

Second thing, make sure you know the phrases that your customers are searching for. Things that they're going to be searching for if they're looking to do business with you.

And also just general things that they might be searching for if they are your source of customers.

Once you know those keywords, write or optimize the content on pages for those types of keywords. And make sure that you're matching the intent of the keyword to the intent of the page.

then you're going to go out and pick up some links.
