Now a housing development on a street called The Sheddings (sic) this was the last day of steam at the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway locomotive depot. The shed foreman had cleaned & lined up 4 or 5 steam engines - on the left between the water tank & ash elevator - alongside the main line from Manchester presumably to be in full view of passing trains. There were a few other engines in and about the shed but the yard looks pretty deserted.

My mate John is on the left, not a railway enthusiast - in fact I had only been one since April that same year - but interested in the historical & industrial scene that was rapidly passing.

A diesel being scrapped in the shed yard - a picture that I couldn't resist taking in June 1968 as all British Railway's steam was going the same way.

However with hindsight and information from www.derbysulzers.com/derby1010.html I now realise that this was no ordinary diesel shunter. It was actually built for the War Department by the LMS at Derby (the 21st of 1010 diesels built there) in 1941 as WD49. Because of shortages at the LMS during wartime it didn't go into WD service but became LMS 7110 and then BR Class 10 12023. Another class member is also being broken up behind 12023 . It's 12012. The last day of steam at Bolton's ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire engine shed and the withdrawn locomotives have been especially cleaned for their last trip to the scrapyard.

A young boy and his perhaps not-so-interested sister check out the cab of Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 45104. Other slightly older spotters exchange info. That chopped in half figure on the left looks very much like my mate John who drove us across from South Yorkshire.

I believe that wooden gallows is a mock-up of the overhead electrification masts to indicate the dangers to firemen of getting up on the tender to pull coal down when "under the wires".

More photos of the last day of steam at Bolton's ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire engine shed. Black 5 4-6-0 44781 looks clean out in front of the depot building. Tender-to-tender behind it is sister Black 5 44871.

These two engines had their day of fame on 11th August when they double-headed a leg of the "15 Guinea Special", British Railways' last steam train. 44871 went on to survive into preservation & should be back in steam for the 40th Anniversay next year. On the other hand 44781 came to a sticky end being blown up by communist bandits in the film "Virgin Soldiers".

The last day of steam at Bolton's ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire engine shed . Climbing to the first stage of the coaling tower this view looking southwest shows how close the depot was to the terraced houses. No doubt their inhabitants will not miss the smoke and dirt now the shed is closed.

More steam engines stabled at a large engine shed, this time at Bolton depot - now in Greater Manchester.

LMS Stanier Black 5 45110 has its nose out of the shed entrance together with other Stanier locomotives & tenders.

45110 pulled the last last leg of the last steam train on British Railways on 11th August 1968 into Liverpool Lime Street. It is now preserved at Bridgnorth on the Severn Valley Railway.

LMS 8F 2-8-0 48773 lounges outside the shed building on Bolton steam depot in June 1968. Other Stanier engines including a Black 5 are present in the shed & out in the yard.

Notice the yellow diagonal stripe on the cabside indicating that is not allowed south of Crewe on the electrified West Coast Main Line. By June 1968 there were no steam engines left in the Crewe area anyway, Crewe South having closed at the end of 1967 and Bolton itself was closed by the end of June.

This 8F was then transfered to Burnley Rose Grove shed for the last few months of steam operation. However, after seeing out the end of steam in August 1968 48773 was preserved & moved to Bridgnorth on the Severn Valley Railway. It is also back in steam again now & should participate next year in the 40th year anniversary of the end of steam on BR.

Bolton shed - view southwards from the first stage of the coaling tower with an impressive mill building & chimney looming over the scene. This was the last day of steam at the depot. There are a few people around including a father, daughter & son on the left. No doubt it had been impressed on the little boy how this place was unique & he will never get the chance again. He will now be in his 40s hopefully with vivid memories of Black 5s and 8Fs - see below!.

I made the long journey (no motorways then) over from Thorne in South Yorkshire to Lancashire with my mate John in his father's new silver Ford Cortina Mark II -the fuzzy looking car parked in the top right . The same day we visited Manchester Victoria station which was all diesel & the sheds at Patricroft & Newton Heath, both also "celebrating" their last days of steam.

Bolton shed 8th June 1968. A worm's eye view of Stanier 8F 48720 standing in front of the shed. I wasn't actually grovelling in the dirt but standing in the inspection pit. In fact it was pretty dirty. Not so the engine which looks very respectable for a freight engine & was still complete with cast-iron smokebox number and shedplates (9K).

This visit was made with a friend & was our first call of the weekend en route to Carnforth shed via Lostock Hall shed & Preston station - see other photos. We arrived at Bolton Trinity Street station on a service from Manchester Victoria - I wish I'd taken some photos of the journey & the impressive semaphore gantries outside Bolton station.

A re-boot of an image posted 16 years ago.

It's the last day at Bolton's Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway locomotive depot and, although it is not in steam, someone has made the effort to clean 8F 2-8-0 48652. On the left is the front of Black 5 4-6-0 45104 equally well presented.

It's the last day of steam at Bolton shed so the discarded bent dart & paddle won't be needed again on the railway. 48652 is fitted with a small snow plough which probably went to the scrapyard with the loco. I don't think any were preserved.

Built by the Southern Railway at Eastleigh in November 1943 48652 had been at Bolton since January 1966 & was withdrawn when the shed closed.

Bolton steam shed, Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48652. The engine is fitted with a small buffer beam snow plough. Two Drewry diesel shunters including D2234 alongside. The signals on the far left are on the Manchester to Bolton line.

I remembered that I had some film in the Voitlander Bessa to develop from months ago. I have messed this one up by using a home-made lens hood that was too long and it has darkened the edges. There is a slight light leak that I needs to be addressed. However, I am pleased at the qualities of the uncoated Skopar lens.
