Kii describes him as, “Slow jam phenom.” Production on album, singing, and mix is really amazing. Put “The Fall” on repeat and the descent becomes deep.

Guitarist, Stanton Edward, sent me an invite last week for the Thursday show at the Nokia Theater. “I’m playing guitar for Missy Higgins at the Nokia Theater in LA on April 19. We’re opening for Gotye – I’ve got a couple of tickets to the show. You guys wanna come out?”

Australian singer, Missy Higgins, set an earthy mood that reminded me of my roots to the world. Playing acoustic and then keyboard, the dynamics of Missy Higgins contains a warm, feeling-interpretive song writing style. She has cited Patty Griffin, Ron Sexsmith, Rufus Wainwright, Paul Kelly and Sarah McLachlan as influences and it is evident in her music.

Fellow Aussie musician/producer, Butterfly Boucher played bass for the set. Butterfly, who currently resides in Nashville has been working with Missy Higgins on her 3rd album, The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle, co-produced with Brad Jones. Towards the end of the set, the music gained a different tempo when Missy began performing music from the new album. “Unashamed Desire” was the most memorable song for me.

So I forgot to bring a decent camera to the very visual production by Gotye, but I definitely brought my ears and the sensory openness of my physical body. Gotye blasted some pretty powerful bass tone into the audience, and I literally felt the music in my heart. Goyte’s music, if you haven’t heard it, has dub, ska, DJ Shadow and the Avalanches (in terms of sample-based composition), and I heard post-Police Sting in a few songs (even though Gotye has been reported to dislike that comparison).

The music was intricate and layered, and the beat (like I mentioned previously), warranted more than the sitting-room-only audience involvement that the Nokia Theater has to offer. Not to worry dance-fan readers, my friend, author Donna Sozio (“The Man Whisperer”, and, “Never Trust a Man in Alligator Loafers”) and I got to each enjoy a little hip wiggle towards the end of the show.

Missy Higgins returned on stage to sing in place of New Zealand singer, Kimbra Johnson, Goyte’s hit song, “Somebody That I Used To Know” where she performed in a different range that was very appealing and I admit, gripping. Great job Missy!

Video, esauls001

Over all show? Two Thumbs Up (one for opener and one for headliner). Thanks Stanton for the invite. You Rock!

Gogol Bordello is a Gypsy punk band from NYC that tours non-stop. Our good friend, guitarist Michael Ward has been with them on this last tour and having an awesome time from the update we have received from the road.

The following shot shows how having a 30′ Bullet coily is perfect for a mega stage (even though most times it finds itself on small stage where it works just as hard).

Let’s share a Gogol Bordello track that we like quite a bit. The rich beat-flavor of punk is pretty evident in this one as it shares the high intensity that defines their gypsy sound.

Some of the crew at Sound Service our Distributor in Germany saw the ‘Faster than Bullet’ videos. They wanted a chance to see if they too could take the challenge. Overall these guys had good times but they were truly blown away that Michael made a cable in 22.3 seconds.

Michael Trepagnier of Oklahoma City, OK is The Faster Bullet winner, making him THE Fastest Bullet! But for Michael, this isn't the first earned award. In 2009 he became a Grammy Award winning recording engineer when Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" took home three awards. Currently Michael is the bass player in the band, "Defining Times", which played at SXSW, and continues to work as a producer/ engineer.
