The Bully Kutta, a molosser type of dog is considered as the pride of Pakistan although this rare dog breed has actually originated in India. The Bully Kutta was developed in Thanjavur and Teruchi, the districts in southern India. "Kutta" means dog. The "bully" in the name was derived from the Hindi word bohli which means heavily wrinkled. The Bully Kutta name was purportedly given as the dog has a heavily wrinkled face. Bully Kutta is oftentimes referred to as Indian Mastiff and Sindh Mastiff as the breed originated on the area that part of the Sindh district. The Bully Kutta is believed to have descended from ancient breeds of molossers like the Alaunt and was developed during the Colonial rule of the British in India. The Bully Kutta is also known as South Asian Mastiff and Pakistani Bully Dog as this breed is most commonly found in areas that belong to Pakistan.

The Bully Kutta is powerful mastiff with a muscular and strong boned body. Long legged, wide chested and with well developed jaws, the massive Bully Kutta will exude a ferocious and intimidating appearance. Ancestors of this breed were used as fighting gladiator war dogs. The Bully Kutta was dubbed as the Beast from the East as the breed has gained the reputation for being extremely aggressive. These dogs can be very difficult to handle... they are even known to attack their owners. Bully Kuttas are mainly used as guard and protection dogs. Although dog fighting was banned in Pakistan years ago, illegal dog fighting tournaments are still being held. Because of the immense size, brute strength and the ferocious temperament, Bully Kuttas are one of the most sought after breeds for dog fighting.

Appearance

A Bully Kutta has a gait that is not unlike a lion's gait. The dog has a graceful gently swaying stride. This way of walking is unique to this breed as no other breed of western mastiff moves this way. This dog may have a fluid and somewhat laid back movement but it is apparent that this is a dexterous and nimble footed powerful dog. The Bully Kutta excels in dog fighting as when it is in the pit, the dog would shed off its indolent manner and be the agile, alert and aggressive dog that that he is. The Bully Kutta is a thick boned muscular breed. Weight of male Bully Kuttas range from 150 to 170 pounds though some large specimens can reach up to 210 pounds. Female Bully Kuttas are rather smaller. Measured at the withers, a male's height can vary from 30 to 44 inches and female's height is from 28 to 36 inches. Because of its mastiff ancestry, a Bulla Kutta has the looks of a mastiff. The breed is noted for its colossal head that is supported by the thick well muscled neck. True to being a mastiff, the dog has a wrinkled boxy face as the face, the mouth and the neck are loosely covered with skin. The dog has a strong black muzzle. It has well developed very strong jaws.
Its vice-like grip is one of the qualities why the Bully Kutta is a most sought after breed by dog fighting enthusiasts. Pricked ears are set high on the skull. Deep set eyes seem to be hollow when seen from a distance. The Bully Kutta is a wide chested breed. The back is long and the brisket deep. The loose stretchable skin perfectly covers the well developed bone structure. The smooth short coat is predominantly white in color although dogs can have black, brown, fawn coats. Brindle, bi-colored and dogs with variedly colored markings are also seen.

Personality

However these dogs after all have descended from ancient notable war dogs. The dog has a reputation for being extremely aggressive. Some dog owners have attested to the fact this breed would be virtually un trainable and very hard to tame. However, in the right hands, a Bully Kutta can be trained into well mannered pets. This breed though is not for a novice dog owner. The owner must be the strong leader of the dog. A well socialized and appropriately trained Bully Kutta will be a valuable addition to the family. Bully Kutta puppies are boisterous and would make a wonderful playmate of the children. However, children must not be left unsupervised with a Bully Kutta even if the dog is well socialized and properly trained. A massive sized dog can inadvertently hurt a small child. This breed has strong guarding instinct. They are very protective of their family. A Bully Kutta will lay its life on the line to protect its family. Because of it dog fighting history, a Bully Kutta is expected to be dog aggressive. These are massive dogs but they do not have high exercise requirements. This dog has a rather laid back temperament. The dog would enjoy sleeping all day rather than running just like other breeds of dogs do. Care

The Bully Kutta is a short coated breed. This means that the dog would not require extensive coat maintenance. Occasional coat brushing would be sufficient to maintain the good condition of the coat.

History

The Beast from the East... this title was given to the Bully Kutta, a breed of aggressive dog that was used in the cruel and bloody sport of dog fighting. This powerful mastiff type breed is also referred to as Indian Mastiff and Pakistani Bulldog. The Indian Mastiff name was given due to the fact that that this rare breed of dog hails from southern India specifically from the Thanjavur and Tiruchi districts. The Pakistani Bulldog or the Pakistani Mastiff name was given as although the breed was developed in India these dogs are commonly seen and used in areas that belong to Pakistan.

This breed is believed to have English Bull Terrier blood. This rare dog breed is believed to have resulted from crossing Pointers and English Mastiffs with several breeds of British hunting dogs. This breed was supposedly developed while India was under the British Colonial rule. This theory was disputed by historians as they believed that the Bully Kutta has a very ancient origin. The Persian Army has been using the local mastiffs that were introduced in 486-465 BC by Xerxes the First when he marched into Greece. There are evidences that point to the fact that mastiff type dogs were already in existence in Pakistan and India long before the British legion arrived. These dogs have directly descended from the white Alaunt of Persia, from the ancient Persian Hyrcania dog and from the Assyrian Molossus, the legendary dogs that were brought by the Indo-Aryan invaders to the Indian subcontinent. This theory was supported by the writings of Alexander the Great and his boyhood tutor Aristotle. Due to the interaction between Persia and the Assyrian empire, it is highly possible that the Indian and Persian mastiff dogs have influenced each other.

The Indian Mastiff or the Bully Kutta was developed in the desert area of Kutch, in the Bhawalpur area of Punjab and in the Rajasthan area which is under the Sindh district. This explains why the Bully Kutta is at times referred to as Sindh Mastiff. The original Indian Mastiffs are still in existence. This mastiff has influenced the Bully Kutta strain in southern Pakistan. The Bully Kutta strain in northern areas of Pakistan is influenced by Central Asian Mastiff breed. A Bully Kutta is a powerful fearless dog. While majority of these rare dogs are used in India and in Pakistan as guard and protection dogs, a lot of Bully Kutta dogs fall in the hands of dog fighting enthusiasts. Dog fighting is illegal in Pakistan and in other countries. Unfortunately, this bloody cruel sport is still being done illegally. Bully Kuttas that are used in dog fighting are bred down a few inches for performance sake. Bully Kutta is the umbrella term for all breeds of fighting dogs in Pakistan this also includes the Indian Mastiff.

The Caucasian Shepherd also known as the Caucasian Ovcharka is an ancient breed that for centuries was little known outside the remote regions from which it hails, namely the Caucasus which incorporate: Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Dagestan, Iran and Turkey. The Caucasian Shepherd or Ovtcharka (in Russian Ovtcharka means shepherd or sheepdog) is a member of the working group of dog breed and despite its appellation of sheepdog/shepherd this dog was never a livestock herder but rather a guardian or protector which goes a long way in explaining its not inconsiderable size! The Caucasian Mountain dog was bred to protect livestock against wolves, bears and other predators; in fact the Caucasian Ovcharka has an uncanny resemblance to a bear!

Considered until fairly recently by many to be a descendent of the Tibetan Mastiff, updated archeological evidence suggests that its ancestry originated from ancient dogs that lived in the woody hills of Iraq and Mesopotamia. It is believed that assorted dog types that accompanied nomadic tribes that settled in the Caucasus regions, with little intervention and interference from outside influences, eventually evolved into the Caucasian Shepherd.

Up until the 1930s, the Caucasian Ovcharka was little known outside its home range until it started appearing in European dog shows in Germany. Around 1952 the Caucasian Shepherd was sub-divided into two distinct breeds: the Transcaucasian Ovtcharka which is typically the heavier-boned, massive dog that hails from the mountainous regions; and the Caucasian Ovcharka, the less heavily built type that originates from the steppe regions.

In 1976 the two sub-breeds were consolidated and reclassified as one breed, and these days the Caucasian Mountain Dog is expected to conform to a single standard. Be that as it may however, the various sub-breeds can still be differentiated regionally from the various territories of the former USSR and nowadays one of the most coveted type of Caucasian Shepherd is the so-called Georgia sub-breed which is characteristically a thick-coated, heavy-boned, massive dog that most closely resembles a bear.

The potential of the Caucasian Shepherd as much more than a Livestock Guardian Dog (LGD) was quickly realized by the now defunct Soviet Army and soon enough this dog breed was employed both during peace and war time as auxiliary military "personnel" within the expanse of the Soviet Union. In the late 1960s the Caucasian Ovcharka was widely introduced to East Germany specifically for border patrol duty, fore mostly to patrol the infamous Berlin Wall. When the Berlin Wall came toppling down in 1989, the by-then, at least 7000-strong unit of Caucasian Shepherd employed to patrol the Wall's perimeter was disbanded and many of those dogs found new homes within the newly emancipated civilian population!

Temperament

Caucasian Ovcharka was developed to guard flocks and livestock and hence has a strong inherent guardian/protector trait. Much as a Border Collie family dog will tend to herd its family as a substitute flock of sheep, the Caucasian Shepherd will have the tendency to be somewhat protective of its immediate family, a characteristic that has obvious benefits but perhaps less obvious consequences. The Caucasian Shepherd is a strong-willed (some might say stubborn) breed of dog that requires a firmer hand for proper socialization and training. The so-called stubborn nature of this dog type is not surprising when one considers that it was bred over hundreds of years for these exact qualities.

Caucasian Ovcharka was bred to largely exist independent of humans (except for its shepherd) and was bred to co-exist with the livestock it was guarding; thus the Caucasian Mountain dog breed is inherently wary of strangers be they people or animals. Unsurprisingly, the Caucasian Shepherd is most active at night (livestock predators tend to hunt under the cover of night) and though it may give the impression that it's a big lazy dozing dog, at the slightest hint of intruders the Caucasian Mountain Dog will nimbly get to its feet, sound the alarm (barking) and immediately go to confront the threat!

The Caucasian Shepherd takes the protection of its territory (these days consider that the family yard) very seriously and will consider any encroachment by a stranger as a threat. Despite its formidable size this dog is characterized by the use of minimal force to dissuade any threat. Such minimal force may likely take the form of confronting the predator and barking and growling aggressively; usually that is enough to change the minds of most intruders because much like its wild Canid counterparts, this old dog breed still retains the mindset that physical (or deadly) force should be a last resort since it tends to be counter productive (i.e., injury to either party).

Any Good With Kids?

As previously noted Caucasian Shepherd dog breed tends to substitute its immediate family for the livestock it was selectively bred to protect; in other words Caucasian Shepherd is strongly protective of members of its family. Hence it is important to understand that this dog could perceive rambunctious or rough child's play between a family member and a friend (as is the tendency with boys) to be a threat and its hardwired protect-the-flock genetics will immediately kick in!

Thus it is vitally imperative to properly socialize Caucasian Ovcharka and also explain to your kids that just because they know that "Shaggy" would never hurt them, they should understand that the same may not go for their friends unless the dog knows them well (i.e., has accepted them as an extension of its flock). Obviously with a dog this size all activity around small children should be supervised, because though the family pet may not intend harm, it's a big dog that during the heat of play may easily forget its formidable strength and size and could accidentally hurt a young child!

The Question Of Apartment Dwelling?

By and large the Caucasian Shepherd does not make the ideal apartment dweller. Although like most big dogs its energy level is somewhat Caucasian Shepherd is inherently nocturnal and was bred to alert and warn of, and off intruders. In other words your love for your Caucasian Mountain Dog could well translate into hatred from your neighbors because your Caucasian Ovcharka is driving them crazy with its nightly cacophony (barking...which is especially true if your neighbors are creatures of the night aka party animals).

Interactivity With Other Dogs

From a genetic view point the Caucasian Shepherd was never bred to be overly friendly with other canids be they dogs or wolves, because as a flock guardian Caucasian Shepherd would have been expected to ward off all potential predators which naturally would have included feral dogs. However as with most any breed of dog timely and proper socialization usually overcomes any unfriendliness towards other dogs or animals in Caucasian Ovcharka!

Caucasian Shepherd Dog Breed Standard

Currently there appear to be conflicting breed standards which could be in part explained by the different sub-breeds and the late acceptance of this breed into the AKC; as of now Caucasian Shepherd dog breed has no AKC ranking. Only recently has the AKC moved to officially recognize Caucasian Shepherd dog breed (May 2007) even though the Caucasian Ovcharka has been on record with the FSS (Foundation Stock Services) since 1996. From January of 2008 the Caucasian Mountain Dog will be allowed to formally compete in the AKC Companion Events.

Size Requirements:

The following height measurements are for the mature dog and are measured up to the shoulder bone.

Height of Males: 25.5 - 30 inches (64cm - 70cm)

Height Females: 24.5 and upwards

Weight of Males: 100lbs + (45kg - 70 kg)

Weight Females: 80lbs + (37kg - upwards)

It should be noted however that for the Kavkazskaya Ovcharka Breed (the Georgian Caucasian Shepherd Dog sub-breed that most closely resembles a bear) the requisite dimensions differ considerably:

Height of Male: 28.3 - 29.5 inches (72cm - 75cm; minimum is 68cm or 26.8 inches)

Female Height: 26.0 - 27.2 inches (66cm - 69cm; minimum is 64 cm or 25.2 inches)

Naturally the weight of the Kavkazskaya Ovcharka Breed will tend to be somewhat heavier and it is not unusual for males to top 180lbs!

Appearance

The Antebellum bulldog's head is larger and bulkier in comparison to other bulldogs, although the Antebellum Bulldog is clearly bulldog type. It is a strong, well-developed, and muscular breed. Males' weight is between 80-150 pounds (36 to 68 kg) standing 25 to 30 inches (63 to 76 cm) at the withers, females smaller at 70 to 100 pounds (31 to 45 kg). Ears and tail are natural, with no cropping or docking. Color of the Antebellum Bulldogs is white, with either brindle, brown or piebald spotted with black.

Temperament

The Antebellum Bulldog is described as intelligent, dutiful, and responsible, with impressive capabilities as a guardian of family and property, but aggressive only in defense of these. They are friendly and relaxed until the need arises to defend their own. Antebellums are noted for their gentle nature around small children.

History

Antebellum Bulldog was developed by the Maxwell family of Darien, Georgia, USA, under the strict guidelines of the Animal Research Foundation to re-establish a breed of white bulldog that partnered loggers and rice plantation owners of the Altamaha River Basin. During the Antebellum period, large rice plantations surrounded the Altamaha River Basin. The breed is a sustained effort to recover and preserve the "Altamaha Plantation dog" of southeastern Georgia.

In Antebellum Bulldogs blue eyes are common, no known ailments other than the eye colors are recorded.

Boz Shepherd

The Boz Shepherd is an Ancient Landrace Regional Working breed of LGD from the Northern Urfa Mountains which are in southern Turkey. They are a breed that has developed in a harsh climate, and with severe culling. It has produced a dog that has a combination of characteristics not seen in but a few breeds.

Only recently being brought out of the remote area Boz Shepherd were developed, they are gaining recognition as a distinct breed as they are being introduced to the world. The FCI is being petitioned for recognition at this point.They have a natural LOW PREY DRIVE, strong Love or Bonding Nature, are Defensive, and have the size and strength to handle nearly any threat. They are employed as LGD's, Family Guardians, Security of businesses, Police and Personal Protection Work and just as family pets. Their size is quite larger than most breeds, with 32-41 inches tall, and 150-260 pounds. They have long legs and a distinct structure to the breed. It is a common Western mentality to presume that they must be a (English Mastiff Cross) as that is the Largest Breed that everyone knows. But step back and ask yourself. How can you breed a bulky shorter legged Mastiff to a smaller Shepherd dog and get a dog that is LARGER (with regard to height) and have a completely different structure, head, appearance and physical abilities. As many Turks say, "Why would we breed a MASTIFF into out dogs. They are a crippled breed. They would not last in the mountains"

The Boz Shepherd of course is larger, larger boned, taller, more muscled up...

In terms of temperament I am seeing more similarities than differences. Sweet, devoted and loving with owner. With anyone else, high suspicion, very alert and watchful, and until introduced, standoffish. But once introduced and if they think the person is 'ok' - they are fine.

Both breeds very athletic. Kangals have an intensity about them, when fighting predators or other dogs or going after something, that sets them apart from say, some other LGD breeds. And so far as I can tell the Boz seems to have this as well.

One of the biggest challenges that new puppy dog masters face with their puppy training is the puppy biting stage. It is probably the most stressing parts of having biting puppies especially if you have children. Before we get into the basic steps of how to stop biting puppies we will need to understand about your puppy's behaviour.

Biting Puppies - So why do puppies bite?

When puppies are born they explore the world through their eyes, ears, sense of smell and regrettably their teeth.

When puppies are in the nesting for the first 2 weeks they will start to develop their senses. They will start to play with the other puppies and will start playing with the other puppy's chasing, rolling over each other and biting one another. They want to be number one within the pack and this is a way of getting to the top, however, if the puppy gets to boisterous the mom will tell them off.

So you are now his mum and it's your job to reprimand him.

Whenever your new puppy arrives at your home he's now a part of your pack. He would like to pick up whatever smells and looks good and then he will want to give it a solid chew. The problems start once your puppy decides that your fingers fall into this category. This is play biting and we need to stop this behavior before they become biting puppies, we want them to be normal puppies .

For those who have youngsters you will need to sit down with them and teach them what they need to do. Whenever puppies bite a kid, the kid in most cases pull away from your puppy and then he will think it's a game, the more the child pulls the harder the puppy will hold and the more enjoyment your puppy will have.

Until the age of around 5 months your puppy will have his milk teeth. These types of teeth are tiny needles they'll not do much damage at this age but as he gets older his teeth will get bigger and you will feel it. One of simplest ways to stop your puppy biting is to bellow "ouch" in a very deep gruff voice. It will shock him and often he'll release his grip.

As soon as he lets go offer the pup a toy, he'll understand that he is allowed to bite his toys. Let him chew the toy for a few minutes, then take it from him using the command "give".

You have to remember don't get angry with your puppy. You might feel apprehensive that your puppy biting is a sign of a poor temperament. Your puppy's behavior is instinctive and it'll be your job to teach your puppy that biting isn't acceptable if he wants to be part of your pack.

Training your new lab puppy to take toys and treats gently is a great way of controlling his behavior. This way your puppy shall learn exactly how behave in the way that you would like him to. If he's good he will get a treat and praise.

Start out with offering your new puppy a treat. In case your puppy attempts to grab it, close your hand and use the command "gently".

Offer the treat again; if the puppy attempts to grab it again close your hand just as before.

Whenever your puppy shows an improvement reward him with the treat.

First let us clear a myth here, a lot of people do mix Burmese mountain dog with Bernese mountain dog. Let us have a look at both breeds and find out what is the difference.

Burmese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dog

Saint Bernard Dogs

The Saint Bernard is definitely a popular breed, but never more so than it is today, especially in the usa.

Over the centuries, this great big "teddy bear" dog's main claim to fame has been the miraculous rescuing of victims lost inside the European Alps. From the time Barry, the world's most well-known Saint Bernard, set a record for having saved over forty lives, Saint Bernard dog has been revered by all who appreciate the remarkable ability of these faithful working dogs. The stories of their heroism brings hundreds of tourists annually to the Hospice in Switzerland, the land of their origin.

Saint Bernard's heritage dates back from the days before Hannibal crossed the Alps with his herds of elephants and warriors. The dogs at that time were a lot more like Mastiffs than the Saint Bernard as we know it today. These Molossian dogs, which were used in the ancient wars, were often left behind in the mountains by the Carthagians and also the Romans when they moved on after their battles. Once they bred with the local mountain dogs a different breed appeared which eventually evolved and became a Saint Bernard.

Their rescue work is depicted in oil paintings going back to the start of the 17th century, and one, dated 1695, is hanging at the Hospice. The Hospice and the dogs are just as famous today as they were when the Hospice first opened its doors to the weary mountain travelers. This breath-taking location, on top of the world, is segregated from the Italian Alps by a small lake and the monastery originally built by Saint Bernard is maintained under the guidance of the Saint Bernard monks.

Destroyed by fire in 1967, the Hospice has been rebuilt and today visitors driving up the perilous narrow mountain roads arrive at a new Hospice consisting of two guest hotels, shops, and most significant of all, the famous kennel facilities of the legendary Saint Bernard rescue dogs.

In the past, these Chapel Kennels were the biggest in Europe, and while rescue work today is not so much a major part of the dogs' lives, the monks in residence there are more than happy to tell the stories of the impressive work they have done during snow storms, blizzards and avalanches in the last centuries. They're especially eager to tell the story of Barry, the Saint Bernard which provided the most colorful and dramatic story of all.

After dying a natural death in Berne, Switzerland, where he'd been sent to live out his old age, Barry was mounted and now stands in a glass case in the Berne Museum of Natural History so that all may view this great legendary animal. He is not as impressive as some of our Saints today, but he is unmistakably a Saint Bernard and one that fits within the standard for the breed.

Many other Saints have served well as rescue dogs but it is the famous Barry who captured the hearts and imaginations of all who have ever heard of the Hospice of Saint Bernard and the remarkable life-saving dogs.

During one period of their development, Saint Bernards were called Barryhundes in honor of their heroic predecessor. It had not been until 1823 that the name Saint Bernard was heard and it has applied to the breed ever since. Ever since, they have also been referred to as, Holy Dogs, Alpine Mastiffs, Cloister Dogs, Mountain Dogs, Hospice Dogs, Saint Bernard-Mastiffs, and Butcher Dogs. This last name was a result of the enormous amounts of various meats they ate and it was declared that only butchers could afford feeding them. Since the breed served the Monastery of Saint Bernard so well, and because of Barry, the name Saint Bernard became the most appropriate.

A most selective breeding program was upheld to ensure that precisely the most hardy, rugged dogs are kept to follow in Barry's footsteps and to maintain the quality of the rescue teams. These are the dogs that may best withstand the strenuous climbing, the intense weather conditions, and the high altitude. At 8,000 ft, even the monks are able to serve no more than eight years. But while they're in residence, monks on skis, and monks training and working with the dogs are a familiar sight to those who visit the Hospice. Tradition has been maintained.
