Yesterday, while enjoying a cool drink on a sunny afternoon, a friend and I were asked for directions to a nearby building. I knew where the building was, but a brief lapse had me forgetting the exact name of the street, and my bearings. Quickly, I though the matter could be resolved by reference to my iPhone - pop up the Maps app, put GPS into action and scan until I recognised the street name, and could offer directions.

Before getting there however, my cohort piped up with ‘Is that it? It’s over there’. How had he solved the conundrum? He’d used his eyes…

So, ‘eye’ or ‘iPhone’ which is more successful? Sometimes the old ones are the best…

I view The Amazon Kindle in much the same way Alan Partridge views Thai Lady-boys. I’ve developed a kind of unspoken lust for the book giant’s ebook reader, but am sure that it isn’t really ‘right’. Part of me knows that I have no business wanting one, but the rest of me says ‘No, you need it, it’s white and shiny and really very reasonably priced. You could read the newspaper on it! You’d love it! It would revolutionise your world!’. Until now, I didn’t have to worry too much about that however, being based in the UK, but since news that the little marvel may be on our shores by Christmas, my debit card is getting a little worried…

Love this story too, about Amazon removing copies of Orwell’s 1984 from Kindles under the cover of darkness. No reason, no info. Oh irony, how you mock us so!

One thing a geek on a budget often struggles to find, is somewhere to keep all those lovely gadgety pieces. My flat for example, has a total of 40 square metres into which must fit such oddities as an oven, a bath, the bed and my girlfriends overly ambitious collection of handbags. What there isn’t space for however, is a decent desk or a work space that allows me to line up my USB cables as neatly as I’d like.

Praise the nifty brains over at Lifehacker then, who have shown me the light in terms of micro-work spaces. This fold-away desk, is brilliant. Even better? It actually comes from Ikea, making it both cheap and Swedish (like the best girls).

Jump over to Lifehacker to see how little space this thing actually takes up when shut. It’s brilliant.

Imagine taking this idea and expanding it even further… Obviously you could make it much bigger, have a 6ft deck flip down off the wall. But what about making something modular? Maybe a three leafed desk, with three separate desk sections that can all be used, or just one or two in tandem. Maybe they could go across three or four levels, with a monitor shelf, notebook stand, laptop stand and so on coming into the equation. Why not create something that when locked away is invisible, but when down could accommodate three people and a command centre capable of sending a rocket to Mars. Maybe when I have my own place, I will…
