Quick Memorial Day History!

In commemoration of Memorial Day, Lila D. Bunch’s Ashley Layhew has compiled this quick history of the Memorial Day holiday.

The Civil War changed so many things about the country and its history, and created Memorial Day. The holiday began as Decoration Day, and was celebrated in the South by communities. It wasn't a widely recognized holiday until 1868. Families across the country faced the realities of the war in their daily lives, and mourned as they could. In places where battles had been fought, the brutalities of the war were even more obvious. Places that once had been farms were now unmarked cemeteries. In total, about 2% of the country's population died in just four years. Roughly 620,000 soldiers died in just four years of fighting. In comparison, American deaths in every other war from the Revolution to the Korean War totaled just over 600,000- combined.

Early Decoration Day ceremonies were private and local, and citizens would remember their lost loved ones either privately or in grave marking ceremonies. In 1868, General John Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), called for the first widespread celebration of Decoration Day, and asked participants to decorate graves with flowers. He did this at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 people marked 20,000 graves. The GAR was a Union veteran organization that dissolved in 1956 after the death of its last member.

It remained a Civil War holiday until after World War I, when people began celebrating all war dead. In 1971, Congress declared it a federal holiday.

The library's exterior book return box has temporarily been moved for much-needed repairs. Repairs to the return box are anticipated to take approximately two weeks. During this time, we ask that any library materials be returned inside the building during regular operating hours. Any fines accrued during this period will be waived. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your patience as we make this much-needed improvement.

Bunch Library and Bridges to Belmont Host Read Across America Event

Bunch Library, Bridges to Belmont and the Office of Multicultural Learning & Experience recently hosted 42 sixth graders from Jere Baxter Middle School for Read Across America Day. Dr. Amy Hodges-Hamilton, Department of English, started the day off with a presentation on “The Power of Words” using examples and inspiration from Dr. Maya Angelou.

Students wrote about their own experiences when the power of words helped them and when they were able to use words to help and encourage others by “being a rainbow in somebody else’s cloud.” Students were then able to design a graphic novel cover based on the importance of words and reading.

This was followed by a book fair where 87 books were given to participants. At the end, Jere Baxter students asked engaging questions to a panel of Bridges to Belmont students about their college experience and what it took to get to college.

Puppies and Popsicles 2017

Bunch Library will be hosting its 6th annual Puppies and Popsicles event on April 26th from 1pm-3pm on the library lawn. There will be 17 teams coming including a few old favorites: Swoosh, Lily, Tashi, Brady, Sierra, Kevlar, and Spanky! Take a stress break from your studies to come by and treat yourself to a free popsicle while enjoying the company of some sweet puppies!

Library Offers "Fake News" Convo Series

The Library will be hosting a series of convos on ‘fake news’ next Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (March 27th, 29th , 31st) at 10 a.m. Topics of discussion include tips for evaluating fake news, accessing the NYT and an introduction to Wikipedia writing and editing. All convos fall under the category of Global Citizenship, Leadership, Diversity, and the Professions.

Keepin' It Real: Tips and Strategies for Evaluating Fake News
This will delve into the world of fake news and other misinformation on the web. Students will reflect on their news consumption (and sharing) habits and their own biases and filter bubbles. The goal is for students to feel more confident in their ability to think critically and judge the reliability of the news they consume.

Fix a Fact: Introduction to Wikipedia Writing and Editing
Learn about how Wikipedia works and become a Wikipedian by editing an entry! We will discuss how Wikipedia got started, how it evolved, and the value of this free online encyclopedia. During this workshop, we will identify Wikipedia entries that have sourcing or citation issues and fix facts together after creating Wikipedia accounts.

Bunch Library now offers self-checkout services for students, faculty and staff. All you need is your ID card or BU ID number, and you’re ready to check out books at your own pace. The system features a responsive touchscreen interface, an intuitive scanner and a handy receipt printer to provide you with a tangible due date reminder. This service is located on the First Floor Circulation Desk and is available for use during all library hours.

Bunch Research Librarians Noted for Insights on Academic Advising

Belmont University research librarians Claire Wiley and Judy Williams were recognized in the January 2017 issue of “Keeping Up With…,” an online current awareness publication of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) that highlights emerging trends in academic librarianship. The issue, titled “Keeping Up with Academic Advising,” notes Wiley and Williams’ contributions in this area, citing their 2015 article from the NACADA Journal that presented student and institutional benefits of librarians serving as academic advisors.

How do I do this, you ask? Easy! For every can or dry good you donate, you get $2 in fine forgiveness! Just bring the items to the Main Circulation desk, located at the entry to Bunch Library, talk to our friendly staff, and they'll remove your fines! All proceeds go to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

October 24 is National Food Day! One of the goals for this day is to encourage people to "Eat Real." This means, cutting back on sugar, salty, fatty, and processed foods in favor of vegetables, fruits and whole grains! Fuson Receives Deanna Nipp-Kientz Memorial Librarian Award

Courtney Fuson, librarian of electronic and educational resources at Bunch Library, recently received the Deanna Nipp-Kientz Memorial Award. This award is given to a librarian who has gone above and beyond in service for the Tennessee Library Consortium or Tenn-Share.

Tenn-Share President Laura Allison commented on Fuson’s commitment saying, “Courtney is currently one of the co-webmistresses for Tenn-Share. She has been involved with Tenn-Share since 2010, when she was the Learn & Discover chair, coordinating Tenn-Share’s online statewide training program for library staff. She began serving as a co-webmistress in 2011. She has served on several DataFest and Fall Conference committees as well. She has helped design and maintain Tenn-Share’s websites and social media presence, provided technical support and worked to help maintain Tenn-Share’s membership database. When asked to help with a task, Courtney is always willing and her knowledge and work ethic are exemplary. She truly epitomizes Deanna Nipp Kientz’s attitudes of service, hard work, and dedication to Tenn-Share.”

Tenn-Share was established in 1992 as a means of helping libraries deliver efficient, effective library services through resource sharing.

Just in Time for Fall Break: Streaming Videos

The library now has access to streaming films available through the Swank Digital Campus and Kanopy film databases. Over 30 films are currently available via Swank, representing the top choices for Film Studies, including academy award winners and popular general release classics.

The Kanopy film database provides access to one of the most unique collections of films in the world – including award-winning documentaries, training films and theatrical releases – on every topic imaginable. Over 15,000 titles are available from off an on-campus via this streaming service.

Carla Hayden Sworn in as the 14th Librarian of Congress!

On September 14th the 14th Librarian of Congress was sworn in! She is the first woman, the first African-American, and is a LIBRARIAN (there have only been two other Librarians of Congress previously with a background in librarianship).
