Shelf Styling 101

THE PROCESS

Shelf styling can seem like a daunting task. Where do you start? What items do you use? How do you make thing look organically placed rather than lined up? Well you have come to the right place. Here are a few easy steps to break down the styling process.

1. USE SENTIMENTAL ITEMS

STEP 1. We like to start by collecting items that are of meaning to our clients. It may be a book, family photo, a souvenir from a vacation or a family heirmloom.

2. DETERMING COLOR PALETTE

STEP 2. Once you have selected your sentimental items try to cluster those items by color. This will help you determine the overall color palette for your shelves. We like to layer neutral items (books, candles, decorative objects) with pops of color and shine. In the photo above we used family heirlooms layered with dishes, decroative objects with our pop of color being a metallic gold.

3. LAYERING

STEP 3. This is the most important step in shelf styling. Layering items creates dimension, creates different visual heights and makes your shelves feel cohesive. We like to start with an object that has height (vase), add in something vertical (picture frame) and then layer in decorative objects (plant + toy).

This project was so much fun with plenty of texture, pattern, color and lots of glam! We freshened up every room in the house with neutral paint colors, stunning light fixtures, graphic wallpapers and gorgeous furniture.

1. My absolute favorite kitchen candle is the Hygge Vetiver scent from our shop. It comes in a gorgeous gray container with a copper lid. The scent is amazing and it is small enough that it doesn't take up too much counter space.
2. Nothing says I love you more than our "lover" mug!
3. When we are stying shelves my favorite go to piece is our Paulownia Wood Pot.

KARYN'S FAVORITES

1. So excited to have found the Veyali natural perfumes. I am very sensitive to chemicals in lotions, perfumes etc and Veyali is made from pure botanicals, smells great and is chemical free!
2. Every cook needs this wood cook book stand. It is great for holding a book for ipad. Genius!
3. How adorable are these marble bowls on a wood stand for serving?

This nursery was originally for a baby girl but with a baby boy on the way we knew our client needed something fun and bright. We did a large scale cactus wallpaper, rustic wood elements, mud cloth floor pillows and green and gold accents.

Project Tour // Cactus Baby Nursery

This baby boy nursery was one of our favorite projects! The backdrop for the crib is a large scale cactus wallpaper that we paired with a clean lined crib, custom made mud cloth floor pillows and a cozy shag rug. We went for a pop of color in the green glider chair and kept the changing table and bookcase more rustic with a wood finish.

In honor of it being almost Valentine's day I made a list of my favorite items at Madewell (just in case my husband reads this). I am in LOVE with the Transport Bag because it goes with everything and can carry around all my floor plans, kid snacks, and whatever else I might need in a day. I am often running between job sites, the office and grabbing kids at school so I tend to dress more casual during the day (which Madewell makes it easy to be comfortable and stylish). Enjoy!

We just love looking back on the transformation of the spaces we design. In the Coronado shores our biggest design challenge is maximizing storate and enhancing the view. We took down a few walls, found some niches for extra storage and created a neutral palette that enhances the view of the ocean in this condo!

Best Gray Paint Colors

Revere Pewter // Benjamin Moore

This is one of our "go to" warm grays. It looks great in rooms that are darker and rooms that have plenty of natural light.

Gray Huskie // Benjamin Moore

We love this gray that is on the cooler side. It had a great pigment that is a medium gray.

Chelsea Gray // Benjamin Moore

Love this dark gray! It has a bit of warmth but is dark and moody. We have used it as an island color or in a formal dining room.

Classic Gray // Benjamin Moore

This is a perfect light gray. It is so fresh and crisp but still adds contrast against trim.

Kendall Charcoal // Benjamin Moore

This deep, dark gray is perfect for contrasting lighter cabinets by grounding a kitchen island or as an accent wall behind a bed. Love the drama!

Harbor Gray // Benjamin Moore

We love how light and airy this gray is but still has a bit of warmth. It is light enough that it doesn't overwhelm a room but really pops against a white trim and ceiling.

El Mirador Project Tour

Our vision for this corner unit at the Coronado Shores was an open, airy, clean-lined, beachy feel. We started by taking down the huge wall blocking the kitchen from the dining/living area and putting the bulk of the appliances against the wall.

A concrete looking floor, in porcelain, is durable and provides a cool tone against the warmer counters, walls and dining table. We kept everything neutral so that the focus of the condo is the amazing view out the sliding windows that open from corner to corner, leaving a whole corner of the unit open to the ocean.

Maximizing storage was one of our biggest creative challenges in this space. We found an extra deep space that was meant for a bar in the kitchen and slit it in half to make linen storage in the master bathroom while still having a bar area in the kitchen. Win win!

In the guest suite we went with warmer tones in the bathroom vanity. A small tower on the bathroom vanity provides more storage.

Coronado Hacienda Project

When we first stepped into this home it was crowded with furniture and felt like a cave. Our vision for this space was bright whites mixed with warm wood tones and a touch of metal elements.

The Monterey building in Coronado, California has a very Spanish feel so we wanted to stay true to that while pulling in elements of the beach. We used simple coral fans above the bed and kept the furniture more traditional.

For the living room and dining room we used soft neutrals in the furniture and curtains, wood tones for the accessories and dining table and metal elements in the media center and lighting.

In the guest bedroom we added a pop of texture with a Mongolian bench at the end of the bed. The bed and nightstands are a warm lighter wood with a pop of brass in the bedside lamps.

The bunk room in this house may be small but it sleeps three comfortably. We did a fun bunkbed with a trundle in this space that will surly create lots of sleepover memories.

Cottage // Before & After

This adorable cottage remodel was such a pleasure to design. Our client wanted a bright, beachy, cottage with pops of color so we went with a white and grey palette with pops of blue.

The first thing that had to go in this cramped kitchen was the side by side washer and dryer. We moved it into the hall closet making room for a large pantry. We added a garden window, counter to ceiling subway tile, floating shelves, updated appliances, wood floors, and widened the entry into the kitchen making the kitchen feel more open. The cabinets are painted white with a subtle seafoam green on the walls.

For the bathroom we extended the wall a foot to create a linen closet (since we lost the lined closet storage in the hallway to the washer and dryer), did floor to ceiling white subway tile, new slate floors, custom vanity, new lighting and a gorgeous blue paint for the walls.

For the living area we did a seafoam paint on the walls, all new wood flooring and kept the furniture and accessories bright and white.

Dream Kitchen

A kitchen is a haven where our families can cook together, bake, and have conversations around the dining room table. Growing up with a large family, my happiest and most important memories were in the kitchen. It's the place where I learned how to make my grandmother's pesto recipe, snuck food to my begging dogs, and played board games after dinner.

This past winter, we had so much fun designing a dream kitchen for one of our clients. The colors that we decided to combine are shades of white, grey, and black. We paired it with hardwood floors and pops of greenery - such as a bowl of apples and plants. These color combinations create a nice clean feel, but it also opens the possibility for a multi-purpose kitchen.

As for the layout, we installed a small breakfast table, large wooden dining room table, marble island, and kitchen bar. One of my favorite parts of this kitchen is the marble island! I am in love with marble. It's easy to clean and gorgeous in such a prominent area of the kitchen. It pairs perfectly with the marble subway tiles above the stove.

Tiny Little Jewels

Located in the beautiful beach town of Coronado, we are surrounded by the salty breeze, calming ocean, and warm sand. I am always inspired by its golden charm. Nothing makes me happier than walking down to the beach with a cup of coffee, jumping in the ocean, and swimming with my dogs. To say the least, summer is my favorite time of the year. I feel like a fish out of water during the "cold" winter months.

When going to the beach, I take a few of my favorite things with me. Besides my golden retriever, Swell bottle of water, Turkish beach towel, and Ray-Bans, I love to accessorize in beach jewels. From shades of blue to pearly whites, it's fun to combine bohemian jewelry when adventuring along the sand and sea.

In our boutique shop, we display beautiful, beachy jewelry from local designers. These include the talented Love Tatum, Noon Designs, and Tenthings Jewelry. Here are a few images of their amazing work photographed by Will Holder :)

Fireclay Tile Feature

We will be the first to admit that the perfect tile makes a project! For example, our Starpark Reno Project, gave us the perfect opportunity to design a custom sized tile with our friends over at Fireclay. We wanted a spin on the classic subway so designed a tile that was almost square but would still give the subway look. We LOVE the Sand Dune color from Fireclay and feel that it gives the perfect amount of contrast to the white cabinets.

Graphic Tiled Bathroom

Hello sweet little powder room! We love combining black and whites with a pop of color, especially shades of blue. The encaustic tile is from the beautiful Cement Tile Shop. We decided to pair it with a Turkish hand towel, vanity mirror, turquoise step stool, and white vessel sink. These combinations make us very happy :)

Pillow Play

We love creating the perfect fabric story for a room with custom pillows. Blending together texture, pattern and color bring a space to life and give it dimension.

Here are our fabric picks for our latest project in Coronado, CA.

Fabric 1 // a soft neutral fabric that will ground the arrangement of pillows.

Fabric 2 // a soft herringbone pillow in a light grey will start to add a little big of texture without being overwhelming.

Fabric 3 // a large scale pattern that will add dimension and pop to the pillow arrangement.

Fabric 4 // a smaller scale pattern that will blend all 4 pillow selections together.

How to Clean out Your Fridge

It’s only December 13^th and I feel like I’ve gained twice my body weight in goat cheese, French bread, scalloped potatoes, and don’t forget about the wine. The holidays are a wonderful time to bake, cook, and drink, but it always leaves me with tighter pants. So, I decided to not only clean up my diet, but to also clean out my fridge. I was storing Thanksgiving leftovers way past their acceptable expiration date, and keeping a minuscule amount of heaving whipping cream. To say the least, it was time. I needed everything to be clean.

Step by step, I ended up with a clean fridge and deliciously healthy foods.

Don’t panic :: Cleaning out a dirty fridge is intimidating, especially if it’s been awhile. Just take a deep breath and turn on your favorite tunes (*cough cough* Adele’s new album).

Remove ALL items from the refrigerator – even the drawers and shelves.

Throw away food :: Take pleasure in tossing out expired food, molded berries, food you haven’t eaten in days, leaky cartons, etc.

Clean drawers and shelves :: Give your drawers and shelves a bubble bath in the kitchen sink by mixing 2 tablespoons baking soda and 4 cups of hot water in a bowl. Then, with a towel or sponge, scrub the entire surfaces. Don’t use soap, because the scent will absorb in the food! Lastly, use a towel to dry completely.

Clean doors :: By mixing dishwashing soap and water, use a sponge to scrub all crevices, sides, and angles of the doors. Bye bye bye greasy fingerprints.

Put back food that you’re going to use in the future :: This includes condiments, salad dressings, and things that are still worth keeping.

Go shopping for healthy groceries :: I went a little crazy on the leafy greens. Kale is my new best friend.

Re-organizing your fridge :: Here is a general rule of thumb below.

Door: condiments, salad dressings, coffee creamers, etc.

Top drawers: liquids, juices, other condiments (such as jams and jellies), fruits,

and veggies

Middle drawers: easy access and pre-made foods

Bottom drawer: meats and cheeses

After these cleansing steps, I felt like I had a brand new fridge! Good luck and happy cleaning!

Holiday Decor

It is that time of year again to break out the Christmas decor, trim the tree, hang the stockings, and deck out the mantel. Here is one of our favorite homes that we decorated for the holidays.

Even though we live in Southern California we had to bring some small elements of winter wonderland to this holiday styling (being from Tahoe and all). We also took the "less is more" approach with this design with some simple greenery, white and natural accents and our favorite wood wreath (we sell them in the shop, so come on over!).

For the table setting we let the floral arrangements take center stage. White dish ware and a burlap runner tie in with the mantel decor.
