With the onset of the great French Open, Tooper's new thing is carrying around tennis balls. He's quite skilled at it. He has about four of them that he plays favorites with. It's particularly amusing since the ball is nearly the size of his head.

I have always loved falling asleep to the smell of my dogs' paws. I started telling other dog-lovers this recently, only to find that many others feel the same way. Then, Dogster founder Ted Rheingold pointed me to a phenomenon referred to as Frito feet:

Bacteria and yeast naturally reside on the skin of all animals, including cats and dogs. The feet of both species contain many folds and pockets, such as the areas between toes and the spaces between the foot pads. These areas have increased levels of moisture and decreased air circulation at the level of the skin.

The increased moisture and decreased air circulation in these environments enables the resident bacteria and yeast to proliferate exuberantly. These micro-organisms give off odors, and I suspect that they are the cause of Frito feet. Because cats groom themselves more thoroughly than dogs, they are less likely to have foot odor.

One bacteria in particular is famous for smelling like corn tortillas. That bacteria is called Pseudomonas. It is often associated with skin or ear infections, and I can't promise that it has anything to do with causing Frito feet. But I am a bit suspicious.

Bunny and I just went for a barefoot run in the rain. After the Cincinnati Flying Pig Half Marathon the rain is no match for us. When it's wet out and we run she's always hesitant at first, trotting, trying not to get her paws wet. When it becomes a lost cause she's back to her normal self - running everywhere but the direction I want to go.

Usually when we get back home Bunny hates being toweled down. But today she was perfect. She sat like a Princess so I could clean dry her down.

You should be thanking me for posting all these photos. I'm pretty sure Bunny knows to sit still now when I bring out the camera.

Consistent with being the stupidest dog ever, Tooper had his greatest mishap yesterday. Reports are still inconclusive, but from personal investigative journalism, it appears as though Tooper jumped out the window of a moving vehicle yesterday. My mission today is to make sure he doesn't do anything unusual. So far he seems normal. He's been barking uncontrollably and laying on my bed all morning.

Tooper is pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And he plans on finding out what that is.

The weather was perfect today so there was no way I couldn't go to Oak Openings for a run. I invited Katie along since she's never experienced the greatness of Oak Openings. I should have assumed that when you invite Katie somewhere, you also get Tooper. Toop loves runs and walks. He spent the whole time chasing us on the trails and stomping in puddles. Katie and Tooper even had matching muddy kankles from the puddles.

After our run we walked down my favorite trail. It has the coolest, tallest, straightest trees. If you look hard through the trees, you can see the outline of three deer moving along the horizon. Tooper wasn't scared one bit. He's a tough boy.
