From http://www.teenvoguefashionuniversity.com/fashion_bloggers.html:

As the fashion writer for PAPER Magazine, Julia's uncommon perch as a 19-year old fashion insider and coterie of compelling and talented comrades amongst New York City's creative circles – as well as NY, London, and Paris fashion industries – have drawn readers from around the world to papermag.com's Fashion Schmashion column as well as her own blog, bunny BISOUS. In addition to frequent features and self-styled collaborations in the likes of Teen Vogue, Vogue Nippon, ELLE Japon, NYLON Japan, SPUR, Vogue Girl Korea, New York Observer, RUSSH, Womens Wear Daily (WWD), GINZA, No Magazine NZ, Dirrty Glam, The New York Times, ELLE Girl Korea, LOVE, Outlook Hong Kong, PULP, and NYLON Mexico. Julia also served as a muse for Moises de la Renta's Spring '10 collection. As a fashion week regular on such sites as The Sartorialist, AltaMira, The Cobrasnake, and Style.com – Julia has become an offbeat, quirky fixture on the style scene... all while still a bright-eyed and bushy-bunnytailed teen.

Following a stellar Fall 2009 debut hosted by Patricia Field in her personal home on the Bowery, Gerlan Jeans' sophomore presentation at the Audi Forum was a booming culmination of designer Gerlan Marcel's unconventional flair: an expectedly wacky affair chockablock with her idiosyncratic patterns (past ventures of the Central Saint Martin's '00 graduate include designing kooky, colorful prints for Jeremy Scott, Calvin Klein, Barbie, and Libertine) and prized off-the-wall insanity. For Spring 2010, Gerlan steered toward a definite '90s SoCal vibe (think Amber's PVC/plastic dresses from Clueless) – accentuated by daytime cotton streetwear recalling a distinct Clinton-era optimism and, perhaps, naiveté. Pot leaf prints galore (played up by wicked hologram laboratory glasses seemingly ideal for Ernst Stavro Blofeld or even Dr. Julius No) and clear sky-high 'private dancer' heels may have been the most immensely memorable motifs that I've witnessed thus far this recession-friendly fashion week; but the truly sellable high points include youthful Liberty-esque cotton floral prints perfectly fit for a romp in the sandbox, a dynamically spirited Dr. Martiens collaboration, and a "yes we can" fist pump pattern befitting our current healthcare state-of-affairs.

Related:

In pure and paradigmatic Costello form, the heart of the line hinged on regal drapes, structural folds, and exuberant hues – this season keeping the spirit fresh (with slickly understated Swarovski details), green (by utilizing an Earth-conscious method of printing fabrics without wasting water in collaboration with AirDye), and attainable (the two shoe styles June and Lula created in partnership with Loeffler Randall are available for pre-order). The boys intently focused on the entirety of each frock – rendering it just as compelling to study the models' garments as they approached as well as from behind – and marking a delicate balance both in silhouette and frills played up by prints forged by manipulating Jeffrey's digital lake and sunset photographs snapped around Brooklyn. Highlights of the well-edited 22 looks unveiled at Milk Studios include a freshly-flaxen Ali Stephens' tricolor moss/acid AirDye taffeta draped one-shoulder frock with seemly satin organza embroidery and Pernille Moeller's periwinkle AirDye lake print taffeta dress crowned by delicate origami jabot.

Related:

The dainty, dreamy RISD alum further refined her skills at apprenticeships with threeASFOUR and Anna Sui – garnering industry whispers of her unrivaled technical prowess and diligent emphasis on the wearer's personality. It was a pleasure to chit-chat with the fellow history buff and rural Pennsylvania native on her pixie-like upbringing, distinctive design journey, and upcoming Spring/Summer 2010 presentation.

Can you tell us a bit about your environs while growing up?
I grew up in a farm town in Pennsylvania. I was surrounded by forests and I played with wild animals all the time; in fact, my mom thought I was a saint because I would perpetually approach and touch random animals and they never ran away from me! I was a forest creature, really –- I never wore shoes, and I hated wearing clothes (but always wore my cat on my head)! Growing up consisted of foraging mushrooms and berries, making little potions... and avoiding clothes. I'm not really sure how I ended up being a fashion designer in New York, but here I am!

Katie and her Sveater

Why are you so enchanted with cats?
They're furry AND low-maintenance! I only really love novelty-sized inflated cats like my Sveater though [photographed above].

What first sparked your interest in becoming an apparel designer?
When I was younger, I was always vintage shopping and altering my clothes on a little Singer machine. When I attended art school at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) I originally had the intention of painting, drawing, and doing whatever I wanted! I was so interested in drawing and dividing up the human body into shapes – by dramatizing and adding character to it – that I majored in fashion to learn how to sew properly and make patterns to do this in a more effective, refined, and pure way. I haven't really stopped making clothes since... and now I'm launching my first collection!

Katie Gallagher Spring/Summer 2010 Illustration

How would you describe your design aesthetic?
I like things to be relatively pure: fashion is as much about what's in style as it is about eloquently communicating the personality of the wearer. I'm not particularly frilly and I like to avoid things that are too confectionary or embellished... I definitely appreciate a certain hardness and drama. But that said, I want to avoid the ambiguously masculine road that is so often associated with that aesthetic. Avoiding lace and trim doesn't mean you have to start cutting up and refitting menswear! A big part of what I do with my designs is technically motivated. I'm a firm believer in non-traditional pattern-making and I avoid superfluous seaming and construction in my clothes; seams should follow a woman's body and thereby accent it... not merely use the amount of fabric that's the simplest and most inexpensive to cut in a mass market factory.

Who or what was your chief design inspiration last season?
... and for this upcoming season?
Both in my last collection, Shroud, and in the upcoming collection Veil, I have followed a pretty similar focus: pattern-making, wrapping the body, and a ghostly, ethereal feel. Both titles Veil and Shroud come from historically significant artifacts – namely The Veil of Veronica and The Shroud of Turin – wherein a piece of cloth had taken on much more meaning than the sum of its parts.
However compared to the all-white Shroud, Veil embodies a much harder approach; it's mostly composed of blacks and I was affected by very dramatic butoh dancers – these really curated, focused body positions and movements. I tried to contrast that image with some of the aesthetics and moods of cyberpunk literature: novels like William Gibson's Neuromancer and Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash. This sort of high-tech, low-life world.

How has working at threeASFOUR and Anna Sui affected your personal work?

They are very different places: threeASFOUR focuses primarily on patternmaking and construction (just like I do) so it was a great place for me to learn. Anna Sui had a very focused aesthetic and incorporates everything she loves into her clothes; they're very much true to herself... and I admire and respect that.

In what manner will you be presenting your new collection?
I'm having a presentation of 22 looks and some 70+ separates at the Tribeca Grand during New York Fashion Week. I am trying to blow out the presentation as much as humanly possible given my limited resources; I have funded the entire collection out of my pocket (which is a very small pocket!) and I've handmade all of the samples, cut all of the patterns, and glued and hammered the leather all by myself. I've literally set up a small production house in my studio! It's amazing how many people have gotten behind it and helped me with actually presenting the collection... I even have a German industrial group making a custom soundtrack for the show. It's pretty ridiculous. I hope the show will be too!

I have always enjoyed drawing but for many years I merely enjoyed doing it as a little holiday project. I love to travel; rather than taking along a camera, I would often take my scruffy sketch book and draw buildings and views of the places that I fell in love with. One day I got the urge to draw people and wanted to sketch them on the move – for a challenge. I guess I could have just sat on a park bench, but by chance this thought coincided with having a drink during London Fashion Week with my dear friend Gianluca Longo, fashion editor for The Evening Standard magazine. He said 'Darrliiiiing, come with me to a show later' – so I did! I took along my sketchbook and a biro...

How has growing up in the zany world of your uncle Andrew Logan – and your entire enchanting family, for that matter – inspired your art?
Well, my father is a sculptor and I grew up in Smithfield, London in an amazing loft full of mobiles that he had made, vast canvases, paper, pens, brushes, tools, and the like. My mother was a wonderfully successful and talented hat designer in the Seventies so we had needles and pins everywhere as well and we were always creating stuff. My uncle Richard was an inventor and I would often go to his place in Camden Town and build a submarine that actually worked, or a speed boat, or a plane... all from crazy bits of this and that: nothing expensive. Then, of course, there is Andrew– who lived in a glasshouse in the sky with flying horses and a sparkling universe of color. I would go to his studio (which has always been close to where I have lived) and make incredible things with him. He still lives in a glasshouse – although this one is custom built – and it is still the wildest house on earth. Andrew is famous for his parties; there really is nothing like them and you never know who is going to be there. I mean, I've been there with J.R. from Dallas, Simon Le Bon (topless), Andrey Bartenev in a pink gimp suit running around with loo roll and my grandmother. All at once. And that's just the queue for the bathroom. I'm so lucky to come from a family that embraces fun and can, in fact, create it from nothing at all.

You're renowned for superbly capturing the spirit of "the moment"... how do you so aptly accomplish this?
Well,
thank you! When you draw thirty sketches in the span of a ten-minute
show you simply don't have time to think: you can hardly look at the
paper, it's dark, and the girls are strutting really fast. At the risk
of sounding like I'm full of sh*t, I think it's in the speed and the
chaos that you find the spirit of all things. Letting go of a natural
urge to control what you see and instead believing in it is a
constant learning exercise for me. Sometimes I'm very aware that my mind
is filling in the blanks on paper when I have not even looked at the
object... I catch myself doing that a lot! The more that I try to just draw what is in front of me, the better that I feel about
my work. On a less 'zany' note – I love people-watching, and I enjoy
looking about and pondering what people are doing in their lives or
give them words in my head. Being at a fashion show or drawing at a
party is always a spectacle: it's the friendships and the falsities of
everyday life but 'turned right up loud'. Observation, a bit of humor,
and being just as involved and silly in said 'spectacle' as everyone
else is how I capture 'the moment'...

What sparked your love of film? Can you tell us about your upcoming projects?

I love film, but for me it is 'a slow boat to China'. In other words, I'm not going to be the guy that sells his soul to make a feature next year. I consider making films to be simultaneously a great art and a huge headache. I'm learning the ropes... but in my own trial-and-error kind of way. I like things to be ambitious: so my last film, a western, involved horses and guns and a life-size saloon that I built myself. The film cost next to nothing but a lot of hard work went into creating it. The next one, whenever that happens, will probably cost a little bit more and be a even more enterprising – but not too much. I learned so much doing the last one and I'm sure that I'll learn a whole lot more the next time around. When a project gets too big I simply stop learning anything practical and generally stress out: the only lesson being that 'I bit too bigger a' bite'. I fancy doing a bank robbery that is all about men fighting over cooking food, one woman, and London... I'd like to try and play with a side of London that isn't all about tough dogs and dirty alleys.

http://www.bluelogan.co.uk/

Related:

Paisley, polka-dots and plaid? As an earnest Woody Allen fan, it's no wonder that I'm head-over-heels for Fay's zany modern-day take on Annie Hall's signature menswear-tinged aesthetic!
I'm dazzled by Alfhild's distinct take on such iconic, patently-Prada pants (S/S 2008).
I'm supremely smitten with her endearing sense of wit – olde-worlde Victorian boots, handmade floral shorts, an umbrella necklace, and a timeless Chanel tote – all rather legendarily capped off with a hefty bear hat from Paddy's Markets! Majorly prolific in her fairy-tale irony. [full-size]

Yoon's innate sense of transparency and perceptive proficiency of textures is something to be envied. Her command of the subtleties of both coloration and fabrication is sublimely cultivated – the silk Chloé top's girlish frills lend an air of innocence to an otherwise slinky set of separates (daring desert sand fishnets atop charming beige bloomers). Her 'fro and friend are rocking to boot! [full-size]

Gloria Baume's composition here is most in keeping with the mode in which I personally dress on a day-to-day basis. I especially admire her fresh, offbeat mingling of textiles – the immaculate melding of a brawny plaid button-down blouse with Miuccia's magnificently regal Miu Miu brocade skirt is further accentuated by twee floral socks, Marc's sought-after carnelian boots, and a scarlet Chloé bag (all of expertly coordinating tones). Indispensable thermal leggings, a quintessential bole belt, and a simple staple denim jacket serve as the perfect foils to an otherwise intricate ensemble.
Oh golly, Miss Molly! Isn't she utterly delightful from head to toe? Donning mightily versatile togs, she puts her best foot forward in spunky cerise shoes and Isabelline socks. A nonpareil pair of Yale blue high-wasted jeans and a fundamentally unfussy grey single-breasted top coat aptly set off a vibrant blouse abloom with charisma and derring-do. Topped off by enchanting tortoiseshell spectacles and a cutesy purse charm... her magnetism is irresistible!

Talk about moxielicious! Layering for the elements has proven to be anything but a personality impediment for this lovably madcap sprite. A cozy cyan Faroese lace shawl swathes a billowing, puffy parka in a Peter Pilotto-esque pattern. Her pixie persona is played up by elfin pointed mary-janes, a braided hairpiece à la Natasha Kahn, and fetchingly flecked cheeks (not entirely unlike Shirley Temple or Joanna Newsom). One can only wonder what treasures lie tucked inside her winsome white Western pouch and shopping bag ostensibly burstling with freshly ferreted-out vintage finds!
With a perspicacious eye for concomitantly eccentric and posh pieces, Ronx is indubitably the crackerjack color coordinator. The fiercest of felt coats serves as the focal point of her swank regalia boasting hues that harmonize to the hilt. Her shirt and sherbet tartan coat's superficially at-odds plaids in sooth compliment each other inimitably; set off by veritably matching azure sunglasses, sack, and stovepipe jeans... as per usual, Ronx is right on the money.
Tomo's winning getup relies almost exclusively on the sparkling wit of bit details. An unpretentious yet fastidiously-crafted white Lad Musician shirt is a relaxed relief from his proper suspenders and form-fitting, charmingly cuffed April 77 jeans. My heart set a'flutter upon perceiving his playful collocation of straightforward black and white shades (checkerboard socks, striking CA4LA bowler hat, tidy lace-ups) against a markedly quirky Palos Verdes Blue butterfly necklace and an old school camera bag (in the most literal of terms).
I don't think it is actually possible not to have a ball whooping it up in this crackerjack ensemble! I'm rather bright-eyed and bushy-bunnytailed for her jaunty Jean-Charles de Castelbajac top flanked by the blithest of smiley face epaulets! Her exuberant more-is-more approach is positively enlivening – spotlighted by necklaces aplenty (an ebullient Trojan Horse to the fore), a fanciful diagonally-striped sequined skirt fit for Studio 54, and crazy-cool contrast-leg B&W tights. Nonetheless the opulent razzamatazz is refreshingly offset by a manifestly easy-breezy Mia Farrow pixie coif, no-frills Repetto Zizi Femme lace-ups, and a carefree attitude (sans makeup).
