I was out in the yard this week breaking up twigs for my rabbits and I saw one of these yellow bellied sapsucker birds up in the tree. I knew what it was from the sound alone that it makes and what kind of pest they can be too, even if they are a very innocent looking bird.

They are part of the woodpecker family and they are very destructive when it comes to trees, destroying over 250 different species of trees in the process of getting sap and insects from them. Even with there destructive nature, they are still a great find while in the yard or out in nature as they tend to get shy when people and other animals are around.

The one above me in the tree was anything but shy, as it continued on its task at hand of boring a hole in the tree at an incredible rate of speed. It was great company as I listened and continued with my daily errands.

This is a cute comic strip I came across late last year and being I love rabbits and everything that has to do with them, this comic of Eightball and Weenus makes me smile each time I read it. Not all of them are funny like some comics are meant to do all the time as you have to read between the lines so to speak to understand what they are talking about, but it's a good read each day, plus reading them daily helps too as it continues on each day most of the time.

I read all of my comics online at GoComics which is where this one comes from, as does my favorite Calvin and Hobbes, and if you want a cute read of cuddly bunnies with some attitude and sarcasm, this one I recommend. It's written and drawn by Jonathon Lemon who I think does a good job with this strip for being his first comic.

Look at this cute kitten. Isn't he/she adorable as ever? When I first saw it I wanted to reach out and hold it in my arms it's so cute looking.

The more I looked at this picture the more I thought about it and what the kitten is doing. It has that look of determination like it's on a mission of some kind and was going to win no matter what.

What do you think of when you see it? Does it make you smile? It made me smile instantly and I'm still smiling! :)

Happy trails everyone!
This was sent to my phone this week by a friend and I got a big chuckle from it as I looked at the kitty and the look on it's face, and what book it was reading. Too funny! I don't know where this originated at but whoever made it deserves a big thank you and a big hug too, as it made my day and my friends too as I sent it to them all.

This depiction of Calvin as a grown up young man takes me back to when my mom died almost 12 years ago and it can
make you sad in a way, but happy too, as I have often opened old boxes
of my old toys and dolls, and some things my mom had too when she was
younger and reflect on my younger self, just as Calvin is doing as he
reflects back to his good friend Hobbes.

If you didn't know already, Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite cartoon to read and laugh upon.

This is a cool looking insect. Have a closer look at it and you will see it's an insect you don't see very often if at all. This particular species lives in Madagascar, Africa and I've seen one there when I was in Africa last year. They are very small, just under an inch in length, the males having a longer neck than the females, most 2 to 3 times larger. When breeding, the females lays one egg, much like a chicken does, just not multiple ones. For only being an inch long, it gives the appearance of being a bad-ass bug of the beetle family of insects.
Sea Eagle's. Have you ever heard of one? I hadn't until last year when I was researching another bird and I when I came across it I was a little surprised I'd not heard of it before, so I did some research lately on them and found some very interesting facts about them I wanted to share with everyone.

Pictured above is the white-tailed sea eagle in Scotland, as it snatches a fish from the water.
White-tailed sea eagles became extinct in Britain in early to mid part of the 1910's, between 1915 to 1917, and the
species disappeared from the wild for over 50 years!!! It wasn't until
1975 that the first reintroduction was carried out, with a total
of 140 birds returning to the wild over the course of 20 years. These
birds have gone on to establish a very large population of over 80 breeding pairs in and around the islands of Scotland. That's cool.
Why do they do that? Did the bug hurt them? Insult them? Scream at them? Kick them? Call them a name? No they didn't, so why do some people do it at all? It's plain being mean is how I see it. I have asked people in the past why they stomped on the bug and they shrug there shoulders at me and move on.

I can see killing a roach or even a house fly, as they carry germs, but butterflies and caterpillars, grasshoppers and lizards, they can do no harm nor do they carry germs, so the ones reading this that have squashed, mashed, and killed bugs for no reason at all, think to yourself, what are you going to say to God when he asks you why you killed one of his creations for no reason? If you don't believe in God, that's your own decision, but that doesn't give you the right to kill for the simple reason of killing. It's wrong!

Most house spiders are not harmful. The little spiders living in the corners of your room are your friends as they kill the little insects that get in and help keep your room clean. When you kill them, it's like killing the maid in a round about way. The larger spiders around your house, most are not harmful but they can be if they feel threatened, and so I can see ridding them from your house, but not killing them.

Ants are good and bad depending on the color of them. Larger Red and Black ants you don't want around as most will attack you first, so yes, getting rid of them is best. Bee's and other such stingers, they are pests and that's all, as most won't harm you if you leave them alone. Yellow Jackets, they are moody and some attack while others don't, but don't kill them for no reason. Don't piss them off when trying to kill them, as they have many friends who stand by them. Some will travel for miles to get revenge.

All the other insects, most are harmless. Please don't kill them as they are my friends just as all the animals in nature are. There are many mean and nasty animals in the wild, but that doesn't give anyone a reason to just kill them for the heck of it. Treat bugs and insects the same. They have a job here on the planet just as we do.

Google has up and decided to kill the Google Reader service only because it doesn't make any money? Are they serious? I don't make any money by writing on this blog. I mean I could if I wanted to but it would be like someone paying me to write in my diary. I depend on Google Reader and have for a few years to get my messages out to my readers and they want to kill it? I mean out of the blue they decide to axe it and don't bother to let us at least discuss it or have some say in the matter? It's enough to make a person boil over when they depend on a service to make them better and make it easier for the readers to follow a certain blog. Correct me if I'm wrong on this please.

If I recall, the Friend Connect is powered through and works with Google Reader. Will that be axed too? I don't know but I intend to find out. From what I have read so far, Google decided to axe Google Reader to get more people and bloggers to integrate into the Google+ social network. The thing is, I do that already and have done that since it first came out. I use a couple different readers and feeds to get my messages out. I basically don't understand Google wanting to axe something that is very popular on many networks for so many people around the world. When someone finds out why, instead of just a money issue kind of thing as being the sole reason, would you please bonk me in the head and tell me please?

Let's say you're out in your yard doing some yard work and you happen to see a wild baby rabbit. You stand and take notice and watch it hop away, and like most people, you will follow it to see where it might go. Let's say the rabbit seems injured in some way and you don't know what to do for it. What should you do? Seek help first!

Wild rabbits often make their nests in areas that boggle our minds... sometimes right in the middle of your front or backyard. They are hiding in plain sight as often as they can to keep from predators that they naturally fear that would be too timid to enter those areas. They don't count on the family dog or cat also being a problem though.

The way that a mother rabbit cares for the babies limits her time in the nest, which further makes it less likely a predator will find the nest. So if you find a nest of baby rabbits, think twice before doing anything that requires that you touch the baby rabbits or disturb the nest. If you see one that is injured, DO NOT TOUCH it unless you have Wildlife Rehabilitation Permit (68A-9.006 in Florida) as it is illegal to handle a wild rabbit even if it's in your own yard. Contact either the Humane Society or the Wildlife Department in your area if you have a concern about a wild rabbit that might need assistance. If you happen to find a nest that has been disturbed, do all you can to restore and protect it rather than bring the baby rabbits inside. If a dog has discovered the nest, you can put a wheelbarrow over it, so that the mother can get to it but the dog can't.

Very young wild baby bunnies with eyes closed and ears back rarely survive in captivity, even given the most expert human care; I know this because I do it for a living and so it is very important to determine whether they really need help. If help isn't available in your area, try to assess whether the infants seem warm and healthy or cold, thin, and dehydrated. One test for dehydration is to gently pinch the loose skin at the back of the neck. If it stays in a "tent," the bunny is dehydrated and needs rehabilitation. Another test is to stroke the genital area to stimulate elimination. I know that sounds strange but it's necessary if you want to help the rabbit. If the pee is brown and gritty, the mother rabbit has not been there to help the bunnies urinate. The brown, gritty urine is toxic, and the infant bunny must be cared for ASAP! If there is no help in your area, you can call the National Wildlife Federation or even the World Wildlife Federation and they can get help to your area.

They forage in the tea bushes and come up for a look every now and then.

This skulking passerine bird is typically found in open woodlands, scrub jungles, and other open areas with some grass type of grass. Grey-breasted Prinia builds its nest in tall grass and lays 3–4 eggs.

These 4 to 5 in long birds have short rounded wings, a longish tail, strong legs and a short black bill. In breeding plumage, adults are grey-brown above, with no supercilium, a black eye stripe and orange eyering. They have a rufous wing panel. Grey-breasted Prinia's underparts are white with a grey breast band. The sexes are identical.

Non-breeding birds have browner upper part plumage and a white supercilium, but lack the breast band. Young birds are like non-breeding adults but more rufous above. There are a number of subspecies. The distinctive greyer endemic race in Sri Lanka, retains summer-type plumage all year round.

Like most warblers, Grey-breasted Prinia is insectivorous. The song is a repetitive chiwee-chiwee-chiwee-chip-chip-chip.

Happy Trails!

I was out in the yard doing some yard work today and I noticed a butterfly I had not seen in a long time. I couldn't put my finger on what the name of it was so I looked it up in my butterfly book and going by the colors of it, I found it rather quickly. I double checked online to make sure and sure enough, I had the right one.

It's called a Spicebush Swallowtail and it's one of four Florida butterflies that mimic the toxic Pipevine Swallowtail to gain protection from predators. I never knew that before today. Adult Spicebush's are strong agile fliers with a wingspan of 3 to 5 inches, but this butterfly rarely strays far from its preferred woodland habitat. A true lover of flowers, the Spicebush Swallowtail readily ventures out to nearby open areas in search of nectar. These butterflies continually flutter their wings while feeding. Larvae create shelters by curling up the edges of leaves with silk. They rest motionless inside when not actively feeding. At maturity, the larvae turn yellow and search for a site to pupate.

I was going to take some pictures of it but you know how that goes, if you want something bad enough and you run inside to get the camera, it will be gone by the time you get back and sure enough, it was gone. Once I found what it was, I just grabbed a picture of it from a nature site I often visit. I hope they don't mind. lol
That's embarrassing! I have been very busy though and not one minute of that time away from here was wasted. Time to turn over a new leaf on here and get back to what I used to love to do, that being this blog. :)

Since my last post, I have traveled to China again for 4 days, been back to Ireland for 10 days, spent 6 months in South Africa, and about to start another round of classes in college at the end of this month. Oh joy......

My time in South Africa was spent at a wildlife refuge and I plan on returning there one day as I learned a great deal about what my future is going to be. I've always wanted to be a veterinarian and that dream is almost complete. I'm working part time as a veterinarian assistant and along with my classes and my time at the wildlife refuge, which I got credit for, by this time next year, I will be free of the learning phase and venturing out on my own. I look forward to that very much.

My freedom will only last so long, as my ultimate goal is to be a wildlife surgeon. I want to be able to travel the globe and help wildlife animals that are in need of help, no matter what it is. Far fetched? Maybe, but I was always told to follow my dreams and that is what I'm doing. The animals need me and I need them. :)

More soon......Happy trails everyone! :)

Chinese rabbit-crushing

I was appalled when I first heard of this so called "rabbit crushing" for fun. I was even mad. No, I was furious would be more like it and I hardly ever get mad about anything. I first read about this act that some of the people in China were doing to my beloved rabbits and I knew I had to stick my nose into it in whatever way I could.

I began researching this vile act and would you believe I found videos of people crushing rabbits by placing a glass plate on them and then they sat on them until the rabbit died. I was horrified to see that! To make it worse, YouTube allowed this vile act to be posted on there website for all to see too, which has since been removed and banned by the way. I have a disgusted taste for YouTube right now, as them allowing it to be published in the first place had me wondering what kind of people were running that place. Turns out Google, which runs Blogger too, runs it. I think I burst a blood vessel knowing my host was allowed this to happen. What could I do about it? Hmmm......

It got me thinking alright and I wasted no time in contacting a few higher ups I know within the animal kingdoms chain of command. They banded together to get the videos taken down and eventually banned from YouTube, but it wasn't an easy matter to make it happen. I contacted my local chapter of the SPCA, then the House Rabbit Society, and so on and so on, and then they took it to the next level, and so on and so on it went up the ladder.

You have to understand my views on this. I love rabbits! I love them more than you know about and to witness the one video I saw, it made my heart hurt for weeks knowing they were dying for no reason at all. They were not wild rabbits, they were domesticated ones, pets! Killing innocent and helpless pets just so they could get a laugh out of it. That is plainly sick! I felt more had to be done. It had to be done to make the rabbits safer. Through the many wildlife agencies around the world, word got out fast about this cruel act, country by country lining up to get the videos and pictures taken down across Europe, up through Russia, and down to Australia.

I was invited to go to China this past spring, along with other animals lovers who needed to get the word out through that country and other hidden countries that seem to think animals are playthings for them to hurt for no reason at all. We got a three day Visa to visit China and even got the chance to voice our opinions about this rabbit crushing event that was sweeping through there country. They did know about it, the Chinese government that is, and they seemed to take a lot more interest in it as 15 countries were pressing them to do something more about it. Did the visit help any? I think it did, as there own news agency, which is governed by there own government, acknowledged there was a problem and that they were going to do what they could to make a difference.

Since that visit, a few rings have been broken up and arrested for cruelty to animals. I don't know what they do to people in China for abusing and killing animals at random, but I know it's more severe that what more free countries do. I'm hoping this gets stopped worldwide before it's gets to out of hand. If a communist country can stop, listen to what concerned people have to say and do something about it, then it shouldn't be a problem to handle anywhere else in the world either.

If you ever see or hear about an animal being abused, let someone know. Call the police if you have to. Thanks.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like? I sure have. I know what they do, what they eat, how they act, there moods, and so on, but what would it really feel like? Would you be miserable, happy you could sleep all day if you wanted, or maybe something else? Think about it though, is changing places with your pet, (in a fantasy type world), a good idea?

Let's say you got to change places for a day. You are laying in a pile of hay, on your back with your paws stuck outward and feeling like a king or queen of the bunny world. So relaxing! Then, you get an itch on your back and you can't reach it. Oh crap! You rub and rub your back against the cage but the itch is still there. Misery! Your owner comes in and see's you are acting funny and thinks you are either hungry or need some love, like most owners do and think. You wag your butt at your owner hoping he or she will scratch your itch, but no, they instead insert a pile of food into your feeding bin that looks more like rabbit poop than what you were used to eating. You poke your nose up at your owner begging for a scratch of relief and all you get is a tap on the head a few times, then he/she walks way. You are screwed as your itch is still there!

You continue your scratching against the cage, wagging your butt harder and harder trying to reach the itch, but all it is doing is getting the attention of the other rabbits and they could care less about your itch. lol You stop and take notice of the other rabbits staring at you, most with that rabbit gleam in there eyes, and now you know you are really up a creek without a paddle. First the itch, now a bunch of, let's say...horny...rabbits wanting you.

It's not looking to well now, now is it? lol Do you really want to be your pet? I doubt it. I mean, what would you do if in that position? Think about it the next time you might want to be your pet for a day. Imagine mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks having a field day in your fur. The thought of it gives me shivers.

If I had to put a "moral to a story" here, it would be to scratch and love your pet all over and not a couple pats only on there head. They can't speak and I know they have itches they can't reach, like many of my cats, and when I scratch them all over, they love it and give me love back, just as my rabbits do. Make there day with some much needed love and you will be rewarded.

How time flies...I had no idea it had been that long. I have been extremely busy with my new career choices, plus my rabbits keep me as busy as anything along the way.

Last week it got real cold here in Florida. 28 degrees is frigid to me so you know it was down right miserable for my rabbits. I knew it was going to be getting cold so two days before it got here, I checked the heaters in the Bunny Barn to make sure they were working. Would you believe they would not even come on. I went into panic mode as they were brand new. I called the company that installed them and they sent a repairman out to see what the problem was. Turns out, the breakers were off in the electric panel. Duh! I felt like a total idiot. While the repairman was here, he checked out the units to make sure they were working and they were. He didn't even charge me for checking them and believe it or not, he paid me. Yep, he left a donation for the rabbits and I tell you now, I was speechless and happy at the same time. I usually get charged for everything that needs to be worked on. Thank you Mr. repairman. People like him are rare to encounter. I'm glad I checked them in advance now or I might have had a lot of frozen bunnies, which means dead ones. If that had happened, I think I would have hung myself. It taught me to make sure things work beforehand though, and anyone reading this should do the same when in a similar situation.

At my last count, I had 285 rabbits. That's 32 less than last month which means someone is getting early Christmas presents. I hate when they have to leave, but I'm also happy at the same time as they are getting healthy and happy rabbits either for themselves or as gifts. They make great gifts for someone that is used to being busy and want a great pet. I don't recommend them as a gift to lazy "don't want to do anything people" though, as the rabbits need a lot of care and love.
I have no idea as I have not started yet. I was suppose to start at the end of last month but I let that slip by on purpose. Dumb decision? Maybe, maybe not.

I was offered an internship with the Wildlife Dept., working with wild animals. I really did think it over a lot and sat down with my family and friends as they poured out concern over this new adventure I was offered. It's one of those decisions that can either make you or break you, as one family member put it. Believe me, it wasn't an easy decision at all, and I can always go to college next year and I will have much more knowledge as well for the veterinarian course. This to me was an opportunity to not let slip away. I love animals, wild or not, and I think I've made the right decision.

I did accept the program and I'm having a blast with it so far. What can be better than spending a couple days out in the wild with wild Florida panthers? Not many people can say they have done that. I think the ones in charge of this program are rather shocked, as most girls I know would never walk up to a snake and pick it up. lol I knew what it was before I picked it up, then I showed it to everyone with a big smile. lol They call me "snake charmer" now. lol If it were a diamond back or something, I would have never even gone near it. I wonder what they would be calling me then? haha

Does this internship give out homework? Yes they do, but not like you might think. All I do is read a lot mostly and they ask you questions while out with the group in nature. I'm loving it so far and it only keeps me away from my loved ones a couple days a week. I do have a link to my bunny cams while I'm away, so don't get any bright ideas about trying to take them....lol

After Megan and I got back from our fabulous trip to Ireland, in which we stayed an extra week, my to do list grew from 20 things to over 80 things to do before college started. To make things short, I never got any of those things done that I wanted to do being a certain person wanted to make my life interesting.

I will back up a bit. While I was away for 5 weeks, 15 of my rabbits up and went missing. Not all at one time either. No one even realized it until I arrived back home and I counted them. I was frantic for the first time in my life being I had never had a miscount like I had. I counted them 10 times and came up with the same number each time. I checked the receipts of the adopted ones and still the count was off. I began looking around the bunny barn to see if there was a hole of some kind where they might be getting out, Nope. No holes, no nothing. I was puzzled!

Another week went by and two more came up missing. I was mad now. Somehow deep within me I felt someone was taking them. I mean there was no other way for them to just vanish like they were doing. I decided to invest some money in a couple cameras that I set up inside the bunny barn and one outside the door. I told no one I was adding them. A week went by and nothing. No bunnies were missing either.

Two weeks passed now and when I went to check the cam footage, I was shocked! I actually fell over backwards as I couldn't believe who was taking them right before my eyes. I hope he reads this 'cause I'm going to let everyone know who you are now.

It turns out my boyfriend of the last two years was taking them. Yep! My so called trusted other half was taking them and selling them. Brian, you are the worst friend a person can have. You are dirt! To make this shorter, I found out who he sold them too and I gave them back what they paid for them from my own money. I don't sell them. He was broke and needed some quick cash so he stole from me. Loser! Don't ever show your face here again loser. No I didn't call the police, but maybe I should have. I don't know.

Since then, I have a secure bunny barn now with the best cams and security things I could afford. No more taking chances for me. Plus, I have a new boyfriend now who cares and loves me more anyways. He is so sweet too, but that's another blog post. hehe Thanks for being here for me Carl. You are the greatest.

I thought I saved it here though so I don't know.

Tomorrow we are headed to Belfast to meet Megan's grandpa who has lived there since birth. We are not making this trip by ourselves like most of the trips through the many cities here have been so far. Megan's aunt and uncle are driving us up and we will be there until Monday, then we head back here to Dublin for the rest of the week before we head home next Friday. Honestly, I don't want to go home. I love it here! (don't tell my bunnies this though) hehe
