Freelance Writing

I have gotten a few questions about freelance writing, so I thought that I would do an updated section for freelance writing. I began freelance writing part time about a year ago, and I have made decent money for no more time than I put into it.

If you are just beginning freelance writing, here are some places that you can apply to get started. It is a good idea to always save articles that you write. As you start applying to other places they will want writing samples. It is so much easier if you already have them saved and are not having to write new ones.

Textbroker: They pay twice a month with a minimum payout of $10.00. They pay via pay pal, and they pay on time. I have never had an article rejected, or not been paid on time.

ECopywriters: I applied with them, and was accepted. I have not written anything for them though. I have never really been able to find any titles that I find appealing.

EHow: On this site you can choose whatever you want to write about. You earn residual income from your articles, which is based off of how many views you have on your article. I have put a few articles up on EHow. I find their website very slow at times. I have seen people have great success from this site.

If you already have experience then you can apply to these:

Bright Hub: I do not know a whole lot about this site. I believe this is a revenue sharing site, and that you have selected channels you can write for.

WiseGeek:They pay average of $10-$14 per article. I have applied with them, but I do not know if I have been accepted yet. I will keep you updated.

Content Divas: I have heard a lot of great things about them. You can email writing samples to them to apply.

Quality Gal: I do not know a lot about this company other than it is legit.

How To Do Things: A How To site that you can write for. I have been accepted, but I have not written anything for them yet. I will keep you updated on this one too.

Suite 101: This is another residual based company. I have heard many great things about them, and people make decent monthly from them. I recently was accepted, and I am starting to write for them now. They only require 10 articles in 3 months when you begin.

Demand Studios: This is probably one of the highest paying article sites. I have applied, but was declined. I've heard that sometimes you have to apply more than once. This is a great place if you can get on.

There are plenty more sites that offer work for freelance writers. Here are the places I frequent to look for jobs, and to learn more about companies.

Freelance Writer Home: This blog is written by one of the most knowledgeable freelance writers I know. She has plenty of experience and details all the companies she has dealt with. There is a wealth of knowledge on her page so check it out, bookmark it, and check it some more.

WAHM Writing Board: I have landed some great private clients from this site. Also, there are lots of people there to help support you and answer questions. I check this site several times a day.

Rat Race Rebellion: Funny name, but great place for daily leads.

I hope that this can help some of you. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. I was a little intimidated the first place I applied, and submitted an article too. Over time you build confidence and it becomes easier and easier to write once you get the hang of it.

When you are surfing the Internet for possible work at home opportunities, you should ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, research the company. (Did I mention ALWAYS?) There are a lot of work from home scams out there, so you have to be careful.

Here are some tips to follow:

1. You should NEVER have to pay for a job!

2. If the pay or the job sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

3. Be wary of anything originating from outside your country. If you reside in the US be cautious of anything generating from Nicaragua, the Caribbean, Nigeria, and South Africa.

4. Stay away from anything having to do with sending money via Western Union.

5. When researching a company do a google search. Try searching the company name followed by "review" or "scam". For example if you are researching a job for "Joe Smith Inc" you should type in "Joe Smith Inc Reviews" AND "Joe Smith Inc Scams". You will be amazed what a simple search can reveal.

6. Check the BBB! for a rating

7. Rebate processing jobs are a scam. I have never came across one that was not.

If you see any red flags that come up, or if something tells you that a job sounds suspicious RUN! You work hard for your money, do not let someone scam you out of it.

Key For Cash: Key for Cash is a data entry website that you can work year round. The work load is higher around tax season though. There is rarely work on the weekends outside of tax season. To apply you simply go to the website, and complete the typing evaluation. Once you have completed this and given your information you will be placed on a waiting list. I only waited about 2 weeks, but I have heard some people have waited months. The current rate for KFC is .40 per 1,000 keystrokes, and you have to get a $50.00 balance in order to get a payout.

Paid to Click sites simply mean that you register for an account, and they pay you as an incentive to view ads or webpages. You will not get rich with this method, but you can get extra spending money in your pocket.

I would recommend creating an email address through hotmail, gmail, yahoo, or any other free email service for these sites. This way your regular email account will not get flooded with the emails you get from these sites.

You Data : After registering and creating your "Me File", you simply sign in and view the available adds. This is the easiest thing I have seen when it comes to making quick and easy money. Now keep in mind, you will not get rich with this site. I average about $1.00 per week for about 30 seconds of clicking. I know that doesn't sound like a great deal, but sometimes that extra dollar can count. You are paid every Friday into your Paypal account. Sometimes there are allot of adds, and at other times you can go weeks without anything. This could be just one egg in your basket of online money making.

Weegy : This is a website that people can go to in order to ask questions. As a Weegy expert you can answer the questions that come in, and get paid to do it. You will not make enough money with Weegy to rely on it for a steady income. I normally just sign in to Weegy while I am already on the computer. Weegy will notify you with a "ding" when a question that has came in that the computer can not answer. Once you are notified of a question you have 15 seconds to accept. You do have to option to pass on a question.

People String is a new company that is trying to break out. According to the website you can register for your free account, and they will send you a post card in the mail with codes to confirm your address. Once your address is confirmed, you let them know how many pieces of mail you are willing to accept a day and there you go. You get money for each code you enter from the mail. PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS A FREE ACCOUNT AND PAID ACCOUNT, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY. I currently have the free account. I will update you about my progress with the company. Check out the banner below to check them out.

IM Report Card: This is a relatively new website where you earn credits to review products, and comment on their website. You have to have a minimum of $20 (2,000) credit to get a pay out via pay pal. This appears to be a nice little egg for you basket when you have time.

Cloud Crowd on Facebook: This is a FB application that you can join and earn money. You can review websites submitted, rewrite poorly written paragraphs, and submit websites that they are looking for. Each item pays differently.

I thought I would give it a shot to see if they paid, so I done a few tasks that took about 5 minutes and I earned $2.25. I had the money in my pay pal account when I checked it the next morning.

If you do not have a Facebook page currently, you can register for one and put minimum information if you like. I registered with my actual Facebook page.

My progress for November 2009:

I applied for an article writing position I found in the Telecomute folder of WAHM. The pay is kind of low, but hey I am new at this so I will give it a shot.

I got an offer from a private client about forum posting.

11/15/09:

I completed ten reviews for Wanelo, which is supposed to earn $10.00

This week I have really dove into trying to get some blogs up and running to see if I can profit from them. If you are interested in starting to blog please check out my other blog.

This first week of my challenge I have just reviewed all of the places I have registered (or currently work), and explored several job boards to try to find many "eggs" to have in my basket.

Here is how I am looking so far:

Text Broker: I have previously wrote articles for them, and I have gotten prompt payment every time I have reached their $15.00 minimum payout. I went back to their site, and reviewed their procedures. I have not written for them in a while, so I just wanted to see what has changed. They now offer bi-weekly payments if you request payoff before the 5th and 20th of the month. They have a blog now, and it seems that they have a lot of articles to choose from.

Daily Article: This is a site that I just heard about where you can submit articles for people to buy. I do not have any experience with this what so ever, so I will keep you updated as I figure out more.

ECopywriters: I have been accepted to write for them, but I have not written an article yet. I will give updates as I get more experience with them.

Wanelo: I registered with them from a job post I saw on WAHM. You write reviews for them, and you can get paid. Currently qualifying reviews are written in English, a minimum of 110 words in length, for products available for sale in the US, and well-written. In order to get paid you must complete 10 reviews from Thursday-Thursday. You can earn a maximum of $10 per week ($1 per review). You have to email reviews@wanelo.com each week with a link to your profile to receive payment. They also offer bonuses and contest weekly.

Helium: I have been accepted as a writer (registration only, I did not have to submit writing samples). This is a performance based writing site. I have submitted one article to them at this point, so I will keep you updated.

How To Do Things: I was accepted as a writer for comfort foods and recipes. I have not submitted any articles to this point.

IM Report Card: I became a member of this site. It seems a little confusing at first, but I believe with more time invested that it will become an easy way to earn some extra money. For this site you write reviews, comment, and review websites to earn credits. Once you earn 2,000 credits you can cash out for gift cards. I have only submitted 1 review.

You Data: I registered for this website. You create a "MEFILE" and sign in to check for available ads to click on. You are paid via pay pal every Friday. I signed in today and made .21 cents. I know it doesn't sound like big money, but I was only on the site for 10 seconds.

Weegy : Basically you get paid to answer peoples questions that they submit. This is something that you could keep open while you are already on the computer since the work is not steady. You also get paid for referrals. I have not tried this yet, but I have heard of people making a decent amount per month from it.

Also, I have gotten a "job" posting on two forums. I have been trying to find time to squeeze those in, but I haven't vested the time that I should on it.

I know if you are new to working from home you are thinking "Wow that is a lot of places to register for!". The truth is you should register for as many things as you can so you do not have all of your "eggs" in the same basket. Some you will find that you will not work on unless you have spare time, but you will have them if one of your lucrative jobs falls through.

Here are some of the job boards I use to find a wealth of information. I probably spend about an hour a day reviewing these sites to see if anything new is posted, and also reading in the forum histories about work from home jobs.

My Progress for December 2009:

I apologize to everyone for my lapse on posting over the past few weeks. As, I am sure everyone understands how hectic it gets around the holiday season.

Here are a few updates.

I got accepted for a position I found on Live Work. The position is doing short answers to questions. I joined the project late, and the batch currently being worked on was complete before I finished the training. I am waiting on the next batch so I can work.

My most exciting item is that I landed my first private client for my freelance writing. I got sent several articles to complete, and I have been paid for the first ones already. I am so excited about this, and hopefully this will turn into a long term client. This is truly my first big bite in my working from home ventures.

Landing this gig has made all my endless searching and countless hours spent on applying for jobs worth it. I say this so that those who may be feeling down or frustrated, if you stay at it you will eventually land something. It has taken me a long time!

My Progress for January 2010:

This month I have spent a majority of time revamping my blog to get things in a better order.

I was accepted to Suite 101, and so far I have only published 1 article on the site. I am working on two other ones to get published.

I have worked writing for a private client, and made a decent amount of money so far from that.

I am not close to my $100.00 a week goal yet, but I am slowly getting there. These things apparently take a while.

February 2010

Well this month did not go as well as I hoped. I did not get to invest the time that I needed into actually making money.

I spent the majority of the month working on content for my blogs, writing for Suite 101, and researching more possible jobs.

My goals for March are to get a blog about my Suite 101 experience up and running, I want to publish atleast 10 more articles on Suite 101. I would also like to invest some time for private clients to earn some extra money.

Yes, that title is correct. If you enjoy posting on forums and blogs, then you should check into these websites. These companies pay people to post of forums and blogs. People need this service in order to get their websites and forums going. The more active the forum is, the higher it gets in search engine rank.

Be sure when you apply to these companies to read the application carefully. Some will ask you to post trial post in their forums before you can submit your application.

Most work from home moms are not able to work jobs that require them to be on the phone. There are many jobs that can be done from home without ever having to be on the phone. These jobs will not make you get rich quick, but they will help with the bills.

It is important to remember that you will need to have several "eggs" in your basket. It is hard to predict how long certain jobs will go, and the peak times to make money from them vary. I do many of them in one day.

These are residual writting sites. Residual means that you write the article, and publish it to their site and you earn revenue based on the ad clicks your article gets. These are great to have for long term earning.

EHow: EHow is a website where you can register and submit How To articles. The format is simple, and you can submit as many articles as you would like. You earn residual income based on the amount of article views. There is some money that can be made with this, but you have to be willing to submit allot of articles. I will warn you that they are a little delayed when it comes to updating your profits and sometimes your articles. This is also a good site for those who are trying to get into freelance writing.

Suite 101: So far I have been having pretty good luck with Suite. Once you get their format down, the possiblities are endless. I do have a blog following my progress if you would like to check it out click here.

Here are some upfront payment sites, or sites that you get paid for once your article is approved.

Textbroker: This is a freelance writing website that is great for a beginner or someone with little freelance writing experience. You can register on their site to become an author. Once you register you will have to submit a writing sample that you do not get paid for (around 250 words). After you submit your sample you will be evaluated by the Textbroker staff, and given a grade from 2-5. 2 is the lowest rating meaning you can only accept articles on the 2 level. Once you start writing more you can move up to higher levels. The higher your level the more you can write, and the better you are paid. Most people start off as a 3. There are a wide variety of articles that you can choose to write.

When you are beginning with Textbroker you will only be allowed to write 5 articles before your account is frozen. They freeze your account in order to evaluate your work. Once they evaluate you, you can continue to write all the articles you want. You can only claim one article at a time though.

You can now get paid bi-weekly via Paypal. In order to receive your payout you must have $10.00 and request your payoff before the cut off dates.

Demand Studios: I personally have not written anything for them, but from what I have heard they are a great company to write for. The average pay for and article is $15.00. Demand Studios offers several different jobs that you can apply for, so give it a shot.

Families.com Families.com offers $4 per post, and suggest doing about 2-3 posts per day. You will be on probation for the first 90 days, and only receive $3 per post.

When trying to find a work from home job, researching is the best thing you can do. You must be careful not to fall victim of a scam, and find out about a company before you send out your information.

Here are some sites that I check regularly:

WAHM: This website if full of information. I look through he forums probably 10 times a day and always find new information. For anyone who is looking for work from home jobs and how to get started, this is the site for you! The ladies and gentlemen over at WAHM are so excellent, and they are great to lend advice. Job leads are posted in the Telecommuting folder daily, there are also folders for any job imaginable.

The Freelance Home Writer: A wonderful website with a wealth of information. This website gives places that freelance writers can get paid to write, and even offers tutorials of how to make your writing more profitable. Check it out, I promise you will not be disappointed.
