On Wednesday evening, February 15th at The Burbank Adult School, our community of parents and educators attended a very informative seminar to teach us and enlighten us to the threat of predators that are out in society who prey on kids.

Led by Pattie Fitzgerald, Certified Child Predator Safety Educator and founder of Safely Ever After, Inc., we were made privy to the ways of how predators think, how they prey on innocent children, and what we, as parents, can do to empower our children, and ourselves, to understand the reality, reduce the odds, listen, communicate, educate, and prevent abuse by being pro-active in deterring these child predators from harming our children.

If you have ever taken a class with Pattie, you will know she is very engaging, funny, smart and informative to the oh so terrifying fact that there are people in the world who you would never in your wildest dreams imagine can hurt a child. Everyone thinks scary looking homeless men are predators. Well, that predator can be a next door neighbor, a family member, a person who abuses their position of authority (doctor, lawyer, officer), a member of the clergy, a teacher. Abusers fall across all backgrounds and socio-economic levels.

Pattie encourages open communication between parent and child regarding their bodies, their environment, and how to deal with "tricky people", people who trick children into a false sense of security so they can groom them, then abuse them. Following are Pattie's Safe Smart Rules, please share with your family and make sure your children know these rules!

Super-Ten SAFE SMART RULES for Kids and Grownups:

1. I am THE BOSS OF MY BODY!

2. I know my name, address, and phone number...and my parents' cell phone number, too.

3. Safe Grownups Don't Ask Kids for Help. (They go to other adults for assistance.)

4. I never go ANYWHERE or take ANYTHING from someone I don't know...no matter what they say.

5. I always CHECK FIRST and get permission before: I go anywhere, change my plans, or TAKE SOMETHING even if it's from someone I know. If I can't check first, then the answer is "NO!"

6. Everyone's "bathing suit areas" are private. No bathing suit area games allowed.

7. I don't have to be POLITE if someone makes me feel scared or uncomfortable. It's okay to say NO! even to a grownup or bigger kid if I have to.

8. I don't keep SECRETS from my parents. (No one should tell a child to keep a secret from their parents, especially one that involves their bodies.)

9. If I ever get lost in a public place, I can FREEZE AND YELL or go to a MOM WITH KIDS and ask for help.

10. I always listen to my own inner voice...especially if I get an "uh-oh" feeling.

COUNCIL MEETING NEWS 2/8/12

Below is a brief jogging down of notes of the information presented at the February council meeting. Please follow up with your class council rep for details:

• Baskets with BPEC invitations to go out to classrooms in February.

• Class Baskets -
Council Reps will decide with their class what their class basket will consist of and be named. The baskets are raffled off at Baskets with BPEC Wonderland Tea, and the class with the most raffle tickets will win a catered lunch, courtesy of the Parent Education Board. *Baskets raffle tickets at the event are $10 for a sheet of 25 raffle tickets.

• Computer Towers & Parts -
Jim Catlett is looking for computer towers, hard drives, motherboards, LCD monitors, any *working* computer parts you are not using. Jim will put together working computers to be used in the classrooms. Please drop off to Linda's office, with Jim's name on it.

• Picture Day -
Tuesday, February 21 - Monday, February 27 during regular class time.
9 - 11am & 1 - 2pm

• See's Candy -
Linda is selling See's Candy to support BAS STudent Council. PLease see Linda to place your order. Candy will arrive before the Easter / Spring Break.

• February 25th - John Burroughs High School Memorial Field Community Dedication event. This is a great opportunity to attend a great community event and mingle with fellow Burbankers and play out on the new field. TASTE OF DREAM DINNERS - WED., JAN. 18TH, 2012

Dream Dinners has invited us to attend a special dinner party at their facility here in Burbank to try their meals. Please share with your classmates and plan on attending. You can try new foods and see if Dream Dinners is something that will work for you and your family. Enjoy!

Here is an excerpt from the Dream Dinners website:

What is Dream Dinners?Dream Dinners is an innovative concept in meal preparation that eliminates menu planning, shopping, prep-work and clean-up by moving the meal assembly process out of people's kitchens and into specially equipped stores. Dream Dinners' guests preview a monthly menu online at dreamdinners.com and select their dinners from a menu featuring up to 17 items (depending on location) such as Herb-Crusted Steak and Citrus Ginger Salmon. Guests can elect to assemble 3-serving or 6-serving dinners, in any combination that works best for their families. (The minimum order per session is 36-servings.) Our guests then register to attend a meal assembly session at the nearest Dream Dinners store location, and pay for their session online.

When it's time for their session, guests bring boxes or coolers with them to the Dream Dinners store, where our friendly and knowledgeable staff greet them and explain the process. Please consider attending any one of these meetings if you have questions and need information. Entering kindergarten is a big deal, these meetings are very informative and will help to answer many of your questions.

KIDS JAM & HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE = SUCCESS!

The Kids Jam and Holiday Boutique was a win for all who attended. Admittedly, parking was a bit rough as we had to contend with some big soccer games, however, families were able to make the Kids Jam in time so that their kids can make their instruments and beat on drums with The Grease Monkeys.

The children had a great time shaking their custom made shakers, following the drummers around Teacher Karin's play yard, and banging on drums of all sizes. There was dancing, jumping and kids participating with The Grease Monkeys. The Grease Monkeys music troupe was great.

They included the kids on stage with them, making this a very hands on event. The day turned out to be perfect to hold this event outdoors. The sun was playing peek-a-boo, but overall the weather was perfect, and the kids most importantly, had a BLAST!

Thank you Sarah Quinealty for organizing this very special and fun-filled event for the children!

Following the kids jam, parents were able to shop at the booths that parents of the program set up. Various items from Photography, Cookware, Jewelry, Clothing, Toys, and even shoes custom fit to the children's feet were on hand to offer their wares for sale for the upcoming holiday season. Have a personalized response from Santa Claus sent to your child this Christmas. The letter will mention your child’s special accomplishments, any siblings they have, and gifts on their list. Santa will also include a couple of toy surprises and a bag of reindeer food for your child to leave out on Christmas.

Letters cost $3 each. Santa letters will be delivered to classes the week of Dec 5^th- Dec 9^th. The deadline for your letter request is Friday, Dec 2^nd.

KIDS JAM & HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE

WOW! Kids Jam is an exciting event being held at the Adult School for all to enjoy. The kids will get to make their own jammin' music instruments to play along with The Grease Monkeys! The Grease Monkeys are also known as The LA Kings Drummers, The LA SOL Drummers, Universal Studios Hollywood Grips, CityWalk Geek Beat, and the Royal Carribean Drummers. If you haven't been entertained by any of these groups, mark your calendars and bring your kids for a fun morning of music!

Schedule of events will include Kids craft time, Open play, performance by the Grease Monkeys Percussion Troupe, and bring your wallets because there will be a holiday boutique set up by parents of the parent education program. You can't ask for a better time to start buying those holiday gifts!

There will also be an opportunity to enter and win (2) Two Disneyland/California Adventure tickets. That's a $210 value!

Bring a sack lunch, and enjoy an afternoon of music, play and shopping. We look forward to seeing you here!

Boo Bash 2011 = SUCCESS!!!

BPEC's 2011 Boo Bash is a big hit with the kids! Many thanks to all involved for such a wonderful, fun filled day of imaginative play, delicious treats, and entertainment.

BPEC's annual Boo Bash event for families was a complete success! The hard work of the board and council reps, their families and volunteers paid off with a beautifully laid out assortment of games and activities for the kids to enjoy. Dressed to the nines in their favorite costumes, kids ran from booth to booth, putting their fingers in slimy spaghetti "worms", walking through the maze, and digging for bones. This year's new fun booth was the Boo Bash Theater. Designed and built by Mr. Jim Catlett, a parent of twins at the school, the kids got to be the puppet performers while the parents watched.

Many thanks to Melina, Boo Bash chair, for putting together such a wonderful day filled with fun activities. There was no shortage of fun! The kids loved the costume parade, where they got to show off their super cool costumes. Other activities included Story Time, the Scholastic Book Fair, Face Painting, a Mexican lunch, and the ever famous Bake Sale, run by Shoushan & Sarah.

Attention All Ghosts and Goblins...

It's getting to be that time of year again. The days are getting shorter, the air is getting cooler, and pumpkins are starting to appear on porches and walkways! Okay, so maybe the air is not getting as cool as we would like, and most leaves on the trees are still green, but hey! Even though we live in sunny Southern California we can still enjoy an Autumn Celebration! Dress your family up in your best Halloween attire (nothing scary, please) and head on over to the 27th Annual Boo Bash!

There will be fun, games, goodies, a book sale and a costume parade for our little monsters to enjoy from
10am – 2 pm.

We are excited to say that once again the super talented Tom Kenny, voice of “Spongebob Squarepants” will be our Master of Ceremonies!

Remember...if you are a “Cake Boss” type, there will be a cake decorating contest. Create your masterpiece at home & bring it on over to Burbank Adult School before the event (or even that morning!) and you could be the winner of a fantastic prize!

All cakes entered in the contest will be given as prizes for the cake walk. We are also accepting donations for the bake sale.

Please try to wrap all items individually for sale, unless it is something you would like us to sell as a whole—such as a pie or loaf of bread.

BPEC's second council meeting of the year kicked off with a special guest, Ms. Barbara Howell, Executive Director of the Burbank Temporary Aid Center (BTAC).

Barbara gave our students a brief history of BTAC's growth in Burbank, and how BTAC serves our community by helping not only the homeless, but your average working family who may be temporarily struggling to pay the bills, or need food. With community donations of food and toiletries, along with grants, BTAC is able to help local residents pay a water and power bill, or help seniors who need to save a few extra bucks per month by allowing them access to their washers and driers to clean their clothing. Burbank Parent Ed and the Burbank Adult School are regular contributors to BTAC in that students gather needed items in their class BTAC bins, which then get delivered to BTAC. Our Community Services board representatives, Shannon Landon, and Anne Askerneese, will be sending information to each classroom so you can help this year, be it a food/toiletry donation, or contribute to the holiday family baskets that BPEC sponsors each year. • Nov. 19 - Kids Jam & Holiday Boutique. 10am - 12pm. If you own a business and would like to set up shop and sell to fellow students, please fill out a form and mail it in! Forms are in your discussion room. This will be a wonderful shopping opportunity you won't want to miss. Invite friends, family & grandparents. Entertainment for the kids, shopping/selling for you! Entertainment presented by the Grease Monkeys, with the kids making their own jammin' instruments!

• Dec. 2 - Movie Night & Play Time - movie TBA - 5:30pm

• See's Candy Fundraiser - Fundraiser starts now, and candies will arrive before the school session ends On Dec. 2nd for the winter break. Please see Linda Matsumoto, and check your class discussion rooms. This is an independent fundraiser run by Linda via the BAS Student Council. The funds raised from this fundraiser will go towards the shade structure of the new playground. Have a sweet tooth? Want to buy your favorite teacher a "sweet" gift? This one is for you!

• From your Vice Presidents Lesli & Julie regarding the 100% Profit Fundraiser. In the spirit of maintaining calm and order in your lives (heehee) the BPEC board fundraising chairs are not going to bombard you this year with dinner night fundraisers, wrapping paper fundraisers, or anything like that. Instead of going out and spending say $40 on a dinner at a restaurant that BPEC would only make $4 off of, the idea of the 100% Profit Fundraiser is to ask that you donate what you feel you can afford to donate to the program that you would have spent on fundraiser purchased items. WHAT A GREAT CONCEPT!!!

You will find in your discussion rooms all the information needed to help contribute. It can be $5, or it can be more. Remember, BPEC is a non-profit, so any dollar amount donated is tax deductible. Cool! Every class has a goal, and if you exceed your goal you will be in for a cool surprise. All money that is raised in the 100% Profit Fundraiser is going to go towards the new shade structure that is needed over the new play structure. Thank you for your part in helping! And remember, ask your family members and friends if they would like to donate. Tax deductions, who can't use one of those???

NO MORE FRAZZLED MOMS!!!

Hello. Our names are Lesli Bjork and Julie Hall, and we were frazzled moms. We spent most of the last school year feeling overwhelmed and over-busy. We loved coming to Parent Ed. We loved learning from the teachers and other parents at school. Our kids were having lots of fun and making friends, yet we were worn out.

We were used to all the regular busyness of life as parents, but there was something extra weighing us down. It took us a while to identify the problem, but then we realized it was “Fundraising Fatigue.” We were tired of selling things to friends and family, buying things we really didn't need, and setting aside extra time to attend restaurant nights and other fundraising events. We wanted to support Parent Ed, but we were tired. We looked around our classes and saw that other parents were tired too. We realized we had to take action. We had to raise money for Parent Ed and prevent Fund-raising Fatigue. So we became BPEC Co-Vice Presidents.

Our goal for the 2011/2012 school year is to fight “Fund-raising Fatigue”, raise money for Parent Ed, and make sure that every family has free opportunities to have fun at school. This year we are replacing our monthly restaurant nights with Free Family Fun Nights. Instead of holding multiple fundraisers throughout the year, we will only be planning one fundraiser in addition to the annual Baskets with BPEC event in the spring. Because we refuse to be razzled moms again this year, there is nothing to buy and nothing to sell, and we aren’t sharing any of your hard earned money with restaurants or fundraising companies. This year Julie and I are introducing the 100% Profit Fundraiser.

We will be visiting every class between Oct. 17th and 21st to make sure everyone gets all the details. Each class will be given a fund-raising goal based on the number of students in that class. Every class who collects money for Parent Ed and meets their goal will win a tasty prize of baked goodies for their discussion. The one class who raises the most money for BPEC will win a delicious catered lunch. All the money will be collected by Nov. 9th and the prizes will be delivered the following week. We hope you will join us in supporting Parent Ed and fighting Fund-raising Fatigue by participating in our 100% Profit Fundraiser. There is no better cause than our children.

A MESSAGE FROM LINDA MATSUMOTO

Hello and Welcome Back to the Fall Semester of Parent Ed. Our classes are going along well. Most have good enrollment. We are adding new parents and children every week. For all of you returning parents, please welcome the new parents to your class.

I want to give an extra big thank you to all of the parents who came out for "spider clean up day" before school started. It's a lot of work but it assures us of a good, safe start for the children. I know that it is much appreciated by the parents and the staff.

We have all been enjoying spending time with you and your families. Please feel free to invite husbands, grandparents, aunts and uncles plus any special friends to visit class. We know how much the children enjoy showing off "their school" and new friends.

We have added a new play structure in the two/three year old yard over the summer. We were the recipient of a small grant that allowed us to purchase the new play structure. Please go to the back yard and take a look. That's it for now. Enjoy your time at school with your families!

President's Message - October 2011

WELCOME BACK!!!

Welcome back to all of you returning parents and a BIG welcome to any new parents this year! My family and I had a excellent summer full of adventures, laughter and love, but had to quickly get in gear as we now have a kindergartner!!! I told my husband that just when I felt I had mastered ages 1-5 our oldest, Oliver started school and that is a whole new world for me! I am learning so many new things now and believe I will be a pro by the time Gus starts school!

The board and I are really excited about this year and all of the fun activities that we have planned! Make sure to grab a copy of the "Fun" calendar out of the discussion rooms, so you are aware of what's coming up!

I wanted to thank all of the board members and their families who came out to help with our annual spider clean up the day before school started! We washed the heck out of all the play yard equipment! I also wanted to thank Judie Annozine and Rebecca Avery for joining me at the Ovarian Cancer run/walk kids expo. We handed out brochures and information about the program and helped the kids make cereal necklaces and bracelets!

I would like to put it out there that our board still has a few positions open and we would love to have some fresh faces get involved! If you are interested please feel free to contact me at melissahelmink@gmail.com.
