i got this pattern from ‘Making Children’s clothes’ by Emma Hardy. i used one of my hubbys old shirts for the fabric. the finish isnt perfect but for a first attempt with a sewing machine that needed threading every 2 mins (the tension was set at 2 oops) they can be summer play trousers...

Faux Chenille Shoulder Bag

This soft and supple purse is fashioned from fabric I created by manipulating 5 layers earth-toned rayon upcycled from thrift store finds, lined with upcycled black silk. The shoulder strap and decorative bead/tassel embellishment were purchased new. The top opening has a hidden closure system (made from a carpenter’s measuring tape!) that softly “snaps” shut. Inside is about 8.5” by 8.5” and the outside finished size is about 9” by 9”. Truly one of a kind!

dreaming of spring...

this dress is a remake of a dress i made last year for one of my sisters. it was a long-distance fitting project that ended up too big and not constructed properly for the very lightweight cotton voile. it was originally "kwik sew 3521":http://kwiksew.mccall.com/k3521-products-20079.php?page_id=3034/. i have learned so much about construction and fitting since then, so i finally buckled down and fixed this dress! i carefully took apart every seam, reshaped the bodice then underlined it and added a sturdier bodice lining, reattached the skirt and finally came away with something that is well-constructed and much better fitting! now if only it were spring...

my interpretation of the BSSH bag pattern. i left out the elastic on the pockets and opening. oh and also even tho it clearly states all patterns need seam allowances adding (about 50 times in the book) i still managed to forget this :o)

Twist top from Pattern Magic

I have had the Pattern Magic books for ages (well, 1 and 2 anyway - 3 is out this month) but like a lot of people I was flummoxed as to how to actually use them.

Last September I attended a great course at Morley College (in south London) based on the books and how to use them. This is my first wearable result of that course.

This is based on a project in book 1 called the Twist Top. You draft the top yourself and then skew the block you have made. Once you have that you stick two of the blocks together to make up your one piece pattern.

Mine looks somewhat different to the version in the book - I think the fabric I used is a little heavy and it has resisted the twist - trying to pull itself back straight - but that gives it quite a cool asymmetric-ness.

I've been on a second weekend based on the books so I really have no excuse not to get going on more of the wonderful creations in the books.
