Making this trip to Downtown Miami was a no brainer!

Food Trucks. Breakfast at night. Me as a Judge.
DONE!

12 of Miami's finest food trucks took to Tobacco Road in Miami on Saturday, Feb. 4th for a Breakfast Food Competition. Yup! They each had to creatively whip up a breakfast dish that best represented their truck and its unique flavors. I was invited as a judge by The Burger Beast who organizes this food truck event every 1st Saturday of the Month, along with countless other food truck events in South Florida. We haven't been able to convince the Palm Beach city/county officials to ease up on the mobile vendor restrictions so for now we have to travel to Miami or Ft. Lauderdale to get our fix of these gourmet trucks. Unless it's a private/organized event...

On to the food... I do have to start by saying I was impressed overall with the ability to create such detailed oriented dishes. Such food should be served in a high-end restaurant given its attention to detail and level of cooking skill. Although, with that being said, we were served 3 variations of Eggs Benedict. So the creativity lost its luster in the end. Some trucks stuck to their roots, like Dim SSam A Gogo (@SakayaKitchen), The Rolling Stove (@TheRollingStove), Latin Burger (@LatinBurger) & Mr. Good Stuff (@MrGoodStuffs) but the overall flavors just weren't as noticeable as others.

The three that really stood out were Cool Haus (@CoolhausMIA), Gypsy Kitchen (@GypsyKitchen305) & Purple People Eatery (@PurplePplEatery).

- Cool Haus created a Brown-Butter Bacon Ice Cream inside of a Waffle Infused Cookie, topped with Applewood-Smoked bacon with a side of natural Maple Syrup for dipping.

- Gypsy Kitchen was one of the aforementioned eggs benedict dishes but topped them all by using grilled bread, fresh tomato, poached egg, thyme, oregano, hollandaise sauce & Indian spiced home fries.

- Purple People Eatery dominated the competition with their Mini Waffle Sandwiches! Organic Blueberry Waffles, Black Forest Ham, Bacon, American Cheese, Quail Egg topped with Maple Syrup.

Those were my top 3 and also the judges overall top 3:
Purple People Eatery - 1st place (35 out of 40)
Gypsy Kitchen in 2nd (34 out of 40)
Cool Haus in 3rd (32 out of 40)

There were some other stand outs in the competition, like Ms Cheezious (@mscheezious) who made a hash brown waffle and Sugar Rush (@SugarRushMIAMI) who gave us a Red Velvet Waffle with Cream Cheese Frosting & Jack Daniels Syrup.

I hope you're reading this early in the morning and still have time to grab breakfast... If not, find a place that serves it all day. I am hungry again writing this review...

I don't usually go off the grid with Non-Burger Posts here but I had to share my leftovers with the people...

Genuine imported Rib Eye.

And of course Wit Wiz.

This place knows how a Philly Cheese Steak is done! There a a few locations you may have noticed that popped up around Palm Beach County... Stop in and give it a try!

The regular size is enough to feed a hungry family... HA. Meat was tender & juicy... Onions, perfectly chopped and grilled. And of course... The Wiz. You can't have a Philly without the Wiz.

If your brave enough, give the Monster Fries a try... Smorthered in Wiz, Onions, Peppers, Mushrooms & Jalapenos. WOOOO! Tasty!

They do have a Cheesesteak Burger on the menu that I will be back to try!!!

In the mood for a spicy burger & a ridiculous selection of beer? This is the spot!

With 9 burgers and 5 sliders to choose from its hard to pick but I went with the Pepper Jack burger, with roasted green chiles, roasted garlic aioli & well, pepper jack cheese. Cooked medium. I mention this because the burger was so juicy it was bleeding onto the plate as it arrived.

The heat of the green chiles had me sweating! Good thing the roasted garlic aioli was there to simmer things down.

Overall Rating: Rare(1) to Well-Done(5)

Gimme A Burger - Deerfield Beach, FL

Only 2 weeks old and this new burger spot has already made a name for themselves. Although, not a huge place, every seat on a Saturday afternoon was full. I guess they have begun to achieve their goal of serving good food, fast and fresh.

Strategically located on Hillsboro Blvd & US1 (right across from Charm City Burger Co.), this new spot is ready to compete. They don't deal with gourmet burgers or fancy names... They deal with high quality meat & fresh toppings (try the avocado relish).

Sgt Sauce and Lunchbox noticed right away the simplicity of the menu and dove right into ordering a Hungry Wolf Double Stack & Wow Burger. The Hungry Wolf Burger, along with every other burger, is made with Certified Angus USDA Prime beef. This double quarter-pounder was grilled perfectly and had that high quality meat taste you look for in a burger.

The WOW Burger is a 1/3rd lb patty of USDA Prime beef and infused with Turkish Sausage, topped with bacon, lettuce, onion, tomato... What a noticeable taste to this burger. Job well done. The sausage really added great flavor.

It did take a little time for the burgers to come out but we aren't really complaining and neither was anyone else once the food arrived. Good things come to those who wait. Also, give the sweet potato fries & onion rings a try. Huge portion. Well seasoned. Perfectly fried. Don't be tempted to try the Cheeseburger Soup. It was like a watery cheese dip with meat and no flavor. The concept sounds great & if you're going to put it on the menu as a specialty item, its got to be done right...

Char-Hut has been opened since 1976. A family restaurant set apart from the franchise burger places of the late 70's. I've been eating here over 34 years and the taste and product have not changed. The yellow, brown and orange color scheme hasn't changed. A friendly atmosphere where they actually know almost all their customers by name and order. That's because a lot of the employees have been there for a long time. Very family friendly with specials and rewards for the kids with free food for good grades and daily specials.

Char-Hut cooks the burgers, chicken, dogs, steak, fish right in front of you. Gotta love that they have a grated cooking surface, just like in the backyard BBQ's. Letting the fat and grease drip down keeping the flavors locked in. All the beef is prepared fresh daily and never frozen!

Dozens of toppings to choose from.
And you know I loves my toppings.

What did I get?

The same thing I always get.

- Char Cheese on Kaiser Roll Medium Rare

- Lots of toppings

I had to get one last burger experience with the family before they took off back home and what better way to eat than to take them to a south Florida award winning burger.

Gilbert's has exploded in popularity since opening! Their 8oz burgers are flame grilled to perfection and topped with fresh ingredients. Not a ton of gourmet combinations but just enough to satisfy your pallets (even the veggie's).

'Quick Bite & Add the Fries' went for the same burger. Bacon, BBQ & cheese and couldn't put it down!

'Clean Plate' Stu thoroughly enjoyed his grilled portobello mushroom topped with grilled veggies. Not a crumb left on the plate!

"You again, did not disappoint," Add the Fries added when the meal was done. "I only take you to the best. No need to waste your time eating fast food, poorly cooked burgers. Only the best." Lunchbox explained.

Lindburgers - Delray Beach, FL

What a great time of year... With family in town I had to take them to a local favorite spot.

This place has 50 gourmet burgers to choose from so they had no trouble making up their mind. Actually, 4 of the 10 people ordered the same burger.

I decided to try "The English" - crispy bacon & cheddar cheese on an English muffin. Their bacon is cooked to order and thick cut. Cheese covers the entire party and the English muffin was a nice added bonus.

"The cousins" went with The Monterey - bacon, jack cheese and BBQ sauce. 'Quick Bite' Alex was done before I could finish taking pictures & 'Add the Fries' Adam summed up the meal perfectly... "Wow. Delicious. Maybe the best burger I've ever had."

Family rating on a scale from Rare(worst) to Well-Done(best):
WELL-DONE

You've got to give Linburgers a try. But get there before 6 or after 9. Placed is slammed!

Self proclaimed "Delray's Best Burger" is a bold statement. Not that I live in the burger capital of the world but to say you have the Best Burger in my city takes "chutzpah." They aren't listed in the top 10 on Yelp & Urban Spoon so this could be a tough one...

First things first. They specialize in Cheese Steaks. Bring more money than you think. The menu is, "8 yrs old and hasn't been updated," according to the manager. Which has great prices that don't ring up the same so DON'T BE FOOLED.

You can order the burger anyway you like. No specialty burgers. Nothing fancy here. A Burger the way you want it. So it comes down to the quality of meat and being properly cooked.

Solid size burger. You can tell they hand make the patty. My burger was ordered Medium but came just a bit overdone. But what surprised me the most was the quality of the Bun and Chopped Red Onions. Yup. Not a solid round slab of onion. They chop them up and top the burger giving every bite a nice even topping throughout the burger. And the bun, a nice buttered grilled bun really kept the flavors together. Heavy on the Ketchup and Mayo but it blended well enough to not be sloppy. The bun really held this burger together.

If you can get passed the service and wait for it to be cooked, it's a burger worth trying.

The short answer is that it came from Hamburg, Germany.

Hamburger started with the Tatars (or Tartars), a nomadic people who invaded central Asia and eastern Europe in the Middle Ages. The Tatars ate their shredded beef raw (hence the name "steak tartare" these days). According to one account, they tenderized their beef by putting it between the saddle and the horse as they rode. Who knew Ocean City would make it's way to Boca Raton? Although, to be honest... This little slice of paradise by the sea could stay up there. Not impressed at all! 12pm on a Friday afternoon and I was the only person in the joint. I asked the manager how long they have been open; "Since January of this year." Really? 10 months and no ones here... Not good...

The Fries was great but everyone is stealing the Five Guys Fries these days and making them their own...

The menu was confusing to order from... 3 signature burgers but you can also build your own... Again, 5 Guys may not be the first to do it but they blew up all over the country and now everyone wants a piece of them... Good luck trying.

The burger was rubbery. First mistake. Zero BBQ flavor for a BBQ Bacon/Cheddar Burger. Also, the cheese was a poor mans cheddar. Come on. Fresh means Fresh. "Anything worth doing is worth doing right." - Hunter S. Thompson.

If Pee-Wee Herman's Biker Gang friends all decided to open a burger joint, this would be it. It's like the Sons of Anarchy took over a TGI Fridays. The decor is all non-sense. A scavenger hunt would take you 3 days to find what you were looking for. Dark lighting. Skulls everywhere and to be a server, I think you need a minimum of 4 tattoos. But I must say, this place attracts people of all kind. Atlanta is kind of a melting pot of stylistic cultures. So I proudly present to you The Vortex!

If you can read that, you probably have heartburn already...
This was incredible and just as advertised!

An original on the menu and what really made The Vortex one of the most popular burger joints in Atlanta, the Double Coronary Bypass (yes its trademarked), is out of this world. It almost tasted like a full course Brunch Burger...

You're seeing that right... In between the Grilled Cheese Sandwiches you'll find a mountain of meat (we asked for medium but we got this). Then topped with 2 fried eggs, bacon, a ton of cheese... Messy. Delicious. (Used to be) One of a kind. They claim to have been the first with many years of imitators trying to be the best. This truly was the best!

12 different burgers to choose from: The Big Joe Burger (Thick Homemade Blue Cheese & Bacon), Chef Betsy Burger, Onion Ring Burger, Chili Burger, Double Cheese Burger, Mushroom Burger, Hickory Bacon Burger, Cajun Burger, Plain Burger, Cheese Burger, Patty Melt and of course The Hangover Burger (American Cheese, Sauteed Mushrooms & Bacon).

Just North of Glades on US1 - Big Joe's packs a big punch for a small operation. Mainly a lunch hot-spot for deliveries around the area, this 8 seat establishment puts out solid food.

What you're seeing there on the side is the Chocolate Peanut Butter Mashed Potatoes. Another perfect side dish for the hangover cure.

The bacon was perfect and the Home Made Blue Cheese was thick, creamy and outrageously delicious! As for the meat... well, the Anus Beef is good but cooked to well done for my liking (when asked to have it medium) and the flat top grill took away some of the juiciness this burger needed. Could use a rub or seasoning to lift it up a bit...

We couldn't resist the temptation to go back to BurgerFi. Yes. I know. I know. There are so many burger joints but this place really stood out to me. They have a "Secret menu" with burgers, fries, shakes, etc... I need to conquer this menu before someone else to let the burger public know all about it!

I decided to go with the 'Supreme Burger' off the secret menu: Bacon, Double Meat, American Cheese & Mushrooms - Another home run for BurgerFi.

We are also introducing the newest member of our Burgers by the Beach family... Vegmaster - He will be bringing you the finest reviews of the Veggie Burgers when sampled. Yes. We now have a Vegetarian in the club. We feel its important to give everyone the opportunity to try burgers where ever we go. If there's a Veggie Burger on the menu Vegmaster will be there for you!

Veggie Burger rating of BurgerFi:
Vegmaster: Medium-Well (4 out of 5)

They cook everything for the burger fresh everyday!!! Huge plus. But he felt the overall flavor was missing something. The bun was great & the sauce was a bit light. Maybe if they pumped up the amount of sauce it would of been a solid Well-Done. Still very good and well worth the try if you're in the mood for a veggie burger.

Finally a burger spot that gets it!

Great quality meat, approachable atmosphere, and affordable prices!

BurgerFi is the second location for this quickly expanding franchise in South Florida & they are doing it right. Huge menu of Burgers (with a create your own menu), Dogs, Shakes, Sides. The line is right behind the counter so you see all the burgers being grilled & the service is quick. Order... Grab your drink... Settle in... and enjoy the BurgerFi Experience!

We started with a classic BurgerFi Cheeseburger: Double Natural Angus Beef, Double American Cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato & their Special Sauce (which was nice and sweet but not too strong).

We then turned our attention to the "Secret Menu." Check out their website... We found a nice selection of items you won't find on the big board inside when you go to order...

We chose the "Urban Fires" from the Secret Menu: Parmesan and herb fries with garlic aioli smothered on top! These were a meal within themselves... Outrageously Good!!!!

Steve & Emma (managers) approached us with a Meat Tasting challenge: They offer 2 types of beef on their menu All Natural Angus & 26 Day Aged Prime Brisket. Which was which...?

You can't taste from the photo but were passed with flying colors.

This is now our favorite local spot! You've got to get down to BurgerFi in Delray Beach (right on the corner of A1A & Atlantic Ave). They have a great selection of Craft Beers! And when you're there, save room for dessert. Their custard/shakes are out of this world... Before they change it up, go try the Red Velvet! We hear theres a coffee/donut flavor coming real soon!

Quickie's - Hollywood, FL

It's always nice to meet up with fellow Burger Bloggers... Sef Gonzalez "The Burger Beast" (@BurgerBeast) met up with me down in Hollywood, FL for one of his favorite spots! It's a shame I don't live closer because now this is one of my favorites. Great choice!

The burgers are never frozen. Made to order. Grilled to perfection.

I had to go with the M.O.A.B. "Most Amazing Burger"

This monster was piled high with Bacon, Fries, Onion Strings, Quickie Sauce and then stuffed with american cheese, yes stuffed, that just shoots out with every bite!

You can't just order a burger here...
The Wings are incredible (try the Beast Sauce)

And if your lucky enough, ask for the Cheese Crisps. WOW! The left over cheese that tops the burgers and is scraped off the grill... Crispy Deliciousness!

And if your REALLY LUCKY... You'll get to try the deep fried brownies!

If your brave enough... enter the monthly "Master the Quickie's TITAN challenge" - A 4 pound fully loaded burger that must be eaten in 1 hour.

Everyone here has a Groupon but the deal isn't really a deal. Smart way to advertise to get people in... Burgers are $3.95 - $5.95. Fries are $1.95 & drinks are $1.75 (Groupon was $12 for 2) You do the math.


Great small atmosphere. Pics all over the wall of customers. Friendly owners cooking & mingling with the customers. Father/Son NY deli owners now making a name for themselves in S Florida making burgers!


Solid 8oz grilled burger! Swiss, bacon, lettuce & onion. May of been a bit well done but the amazing taste of their fresh cut fries made me forget all about it.

My wife and I both ordered bacon and my wife pointed out there was no bacon but they surprised me by putting the bacon under the cheese!!! Well played!

You've got to get the Deli style black & white cookie for dessert!

We walked into an empty restaurant at 12pm but as we are leaving there must be 15-20 people. "It may be hard to find but it's worth the hunt," Palm Beach Post review. I couldn't agree more. A nice hidden gem in Boynton Beach!

Smash Burger - Newark Airport

It wasn't my first choice but on a long vacation to Long Island Wine County I finally got to have a burger... and this was it. Again, not my first choice.

The "smash sauce" was the highlight of this experience. If you come across a Smash Burger in your travels, find the next place. Not a big fan...
