The following information was sent to Burien Daily by Sargent Cindi West of the King County Sheriffs Department on the evening of May 22, 2013.

King County Sheriff’s Deputy Martin “Marty” Duran passed away at Tacoma General Hospital late this evening from injuries sustained from an off duty motorcycle accident.

Deputy Duran who was 47 and had a history of public service. He served in the Army and then went on to become a paramedic and fire fighter in New Mexico prior to becoming a member of the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office in New Mexico.

In 2004 Duran moved to King County and accepted a job with the King County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Duran was a highly respected member of the Sheriff’s Office and most recently was a Master Police Officer assigned to the Southwest Precinct.

He is survived by his wife, daughter and adult son. Deputy Duran will be greatly missed.

Services for Deputy Duran will be held in New Mexico. The family does not wish to make public comments and requests privacy during this difficult time.

The following letter was sent to Burien Daily by former Burien City Council Candidate, Len Boscarine on May 21, 2013. Boscarine withdrew from the 2013 race the Monday after filing for position #5 against former Deputy Mayor Rose Clark and Planning Commissioner Nancy Tosta. Because Len withdrew from the election, Council Member Clark and Commissioner Tosta will be the only candidates not to face a primary election and will thus move onto the November general election. 

“I want to thank the buriendaily.com for giving me this opportunity to comment about why I withdrew from the Burien City Council election. Also, I want to thank the friends and neighbors who encouraged me to run for the Council. It is always flattering to have citizens and friends tell you that you would be the right person to serve the city and their rights and interests in the city.

I decided to file for this election because until late Friday it looked like Rose Clark was going to run unopposed for the Burien City Council.  I feel very strongly that new blood is needed on the Burien City Council.

Burien now has a situation in which the majority of the city council members have taken control of our city’s government and they have promoted some financially ill advised ventures such as the annexation of Area Y/White Center and spending into the  city’s cash reserves.

Several citizens, and even some minority council members, have called for citizens’ advisory votes on such issues. The “Gang of Four” that holds the majority on the council have repeatedly said that they will not allow citizens’ advisory votes on the critical issues confronting the city.

When I saw that Nancy Tosta was running for the same position as I had filed for, I was delighted.  Even though it would have been an honor to represent the citizens of Burien, I feel that Nancy is an even better candidate for this Council position. She and I share many of the same ideas and goals for the City and the Council.  I hardly endorse Nancy Tosta for Council Position # 5.         

Nancy is a professional scientist, business owner, professional facilitator and one of the leading world experts in GIS mapping.   In the early 1990s, she has even served as Special Assistant to the US Secretary of the Interior.

Sebastian is one of just forty-seven educators and students from around the world selected from a competitive pool of applicants by the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) to participate at sea during the program. Among the Educators at Sea will be Mount Rainer Teacher Sam Garson who is returning for his third year with the program. In previous years, Garson has shared live video conferences with students and staff back at home.  The selected educators and students hail from schools, universities, and science centers in twenty-one states and five countries. They will join the Nautilus Corps of Exploration during ocean expeditions from June through November in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Mediterranean Sea.

The 2013 educator and student selectees will embark on several expeditions aboard Dr. Robert Ballard’s ship of exploration, E/V Nautilus, and other research vessels off the coast of the United States and Puerto Rico, as well as Montserrat, Cayman Islands, Bahamas, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, and Turkey. As members of the Corps of Exploration, educators and students will stand watch alongside scientists and engineers, as well as participate in live interactions with shore-based audiences via Exploration Now. When launched in June, Exploration Now will be a 24-hour online portal bringing expeditions from the field to future explorers on shore via telepresence technology.      

“One of the major goals of our Nautilus Exploration Program is to inspire the next generation of explorers in STEM fields,” said Expedition Leader and OET Vice President, Dr. Katherine Croff Bell, “so we’re very excited to provide educators and students with the direct experience of pure exploration, while allowing them the opportunity to share their experience far and wide with their peers.”

About the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) Programs:

The Educator At Sea Science Communication Fellowship Program will host sixteen new educators and four returning lead educators, including educators from Northern Ireland and Venezuela. Educator at Sea positions entail 2-4 week periods working aboard E/V Nautilus and other vessels as communicators of the expedition. An equally important aspect of the program is bringing the expedition back home to local student populations and communities after they have returned home. The Educator at Sea program is sponsored in part by Bechtel.

The Science and Engineering Internship Program will host fifteen interns, including students from Australia and Canada. The internship program aims to train undergraduate and graduate students studying ocean science, engineering and film in the at-sea environment. Intern positions entail 2-5 week periods working aboard E/V Nautilus and other vessels as Data Loggers, ROV Pilots, or Video Engineers.

The Honors Research Program (HRP) will host twelve students from across the United States. The HRP Program invites junior and senior high school students to participate in a seven-week summer research and exploration program. Students work with scientists at the University of Rhode Island (URI) Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) and are also invited to join the Corps of Exploration aboard Nautilus and other vessels.

The Nautilus Exploration Program was founded in 2008 by Dr. Robert Ballard. The international exploration program centers on scientific exploration of the seafloor launched from aboard the Exploration Vessel Nautilus, a 64-meter research vessel currently based in the Caribbean Sea, and additional research vessels. In addition to conducting pure scientific research, the Nautilus Exploration Program offers telepresence to explorers on shore via live video, audio and data feeds from the ships. The program also includes an education component that brings educators and students on ocean expeditions.  The 2013 Nautilus Exploration Program sponsors are the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Bechtel, Sea Research Foundation, Office of Naval Research, National Geographic Society, University of Rhode Island, and additional private donors.

On September 29^th, of last year, a suspect accosted and attempted to abduct a 10 year old child at the Albertson’s at South 128^th Street and 1^st Avenue South in Burien.

Albertson’s employees, becoming aware of a commotion, intervened and successfully rescued the child and after a struggle, detained the suspect pending the arrival of the police.

On May 20, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Burien Police Chief Scott Kimerer will honor the employee’s with the King County Sheriff’s Office Meritorious Service Award. The Meritorious Service Award is the Sheriff’s Office 7^th highest award conferred on an individual or group who demonstrate extremely meritorious dedication.

In her letter, Shelli stated that she has come to the conclusion “after serious consideration” and that she “cannot do a responsible job as a City Council member” until her design business, Crimson Park Design, is in a more stable position.

The Burien Arts Commissioner took the opportunity to endorse Planning Commissioner Joey Martinez and candidate Lauren Berkowitz.

Commissioner Martinez has filed to run for City Council position #7, the seat currently held by Mayor Brian Bennett. Mayor Bennett announced earlier this month that he made the discussion with his family not to run for Council again and endorsed Martinez to fill his Council seat. Commissioner Martinez recently released a letter asking Burien residents to support him in his race against candidates Steve Armstrong and Chuck Rangel stating that   “Together, we can build a better Burien.”

Candidate Lauren Berkowitz is currently running against Council Member Jack Block, Jr. and southeast Burien resident Kip Walton. Berkowitz announced her candidacy for City Council position #1 on March 14th and stated “We need new leaders to move Burien into the future… Our community has so much potential. It’s time to begin realizing it.”

Burien is the only city in King County to have more than two candidates file for every position up for reelection. Ballots for the 2013 primary election will be mailed on July 17th. These ballots must be returned by Tuesday, August 6th. You can register to vote or submit a change of address by visiting the King County Elections website.

With yet another great initiative to help the community, HomeTask organizes “Burien Bites” on June 2nd, the second annual event allows people the opportunity to visit multiple restaurants for a bite to benefit local charities.

Running Start enables high school students to attend community college and simultaneously earn high school and college credit.

“Running Start is an extremely valuable option for our highly motivated students as college costs are increasing every year,” said Student Advancement Director Rachel Klein. “Students who demonstrate success in Running Start will be more attractive to admissions officers of highly competitive college and career programs, in addition to having some of their credits already paid for.

Earning an AA or Certificate at the same time as a high school diploma is not an easy task. A total of 217 seniors across the district took classes through Running Start this year; only 23 will graduate with an AA.

These students represent five Highline schools: Academy of Citizenship and Empowerment (ACE), Global Connections High School, CHOICE Academy, Highline High School, and Mount Rainier High School.

Students do not have to pay for tuition, but they are required to pay college fees and buy their own books. They also have to provide their own transportation

Highline Public Schools is partnering with Highline Community College to launch a new program next year called Career Start. Juniors will be able to enroll in a career-training program and graduate with a career certificate as well as a high school diploma after two years.

“We are optimistic that it will accelerate the on-ramp into the workforce for some students, and allow them to earn a living wage much faster in their career,” said Klein.

Hello my name is Steve Armstrong and I am running for Burien City Council / Position 7. I’ve lived in Burien for over 40 years. Attended Shorewood Elementary, Cascade Middle School, Evergreen High and the University of Washington. My children, Alex and Elena, attended local schools – St. Francis, Highline and JFK. I am currently employed by The Boeing Company (32 years) specializing in Contracts. My hobbies include: hiking, mountain climbing, fly fishing, tennis, volleyball and spending time with my family and friends.

I’m running for city council because I believe it’s time for a change and that I can help initiate this change. It appears that some Council members and the City Manager have lost touch with the citizens of Burien. Recent evaluations from the City Council are mixed as to whether the City Manager is performing to expectations. Council members do not (or will not) work together. This condition must change.

There has been a complete disregard for the voice of the people. An example is the attempt to annex Area Y. My aversion to annexation is based solely on economics and the best interests for all. Seattle, with a huge revenue / tax base, found it impractical to annex at the time. Why would our City Manager and some Council members believe that annexation was in the best interest and would enrich the lives of those living in Area Y as well as Burien?

Regarding the recent issue of instituting “Wards” (aka Gerrymandering). This practice attempts to establish a political advantage for a particular party, group or individual by manipulating district boundaries to create partisan advantaged districts. Again, whose interests are being addressed here? I believe if you’re running for office or in office, you should be under the microscope of and represent the entire voting population, not just those in your backyard.

Together we can create a better form of government. A government that is (i) a friend of the people; (ii) works for the people; and (iii) accessible, responsible, accountable and transparent with emphasis on Burien First!

My first goal is to ensure the livelihood, health and welfare of the people of Burien. Listen to their opinions, needs and desires – acting on their behalf for the common good.

Support our schools! Providing for our children is vital to the growth and well being of our community. I will work with schools to find ways to engage our young adults in becoming a valued investment in the community. The Burien Parks and Recreation team has done an excellent job in providing opportunities for our children. I would encourage them to expand those programs and promote career paths for interested teens – initiating mentoring and internships in city government as well as business. Partnering is the key between the City, business and volunteers to make this a reality.

Support and retain existing business as well as attracting new business opportunities. Partnering with “Discover Burien”, let’s create a forum responsible for developing creative ideas and enhancing Burien’s appeal for business. We need to find a better way to support and retain existing business and attract new business. There are many people in our community with great ideas – let’s get them engaged!

Involved with Police and Fire personnel – listen and hear their voice. I will frequently meet with these partners ensuring that the necessary tools are available to help them achieve the challenges they face on a daily basis.

Taxes… Let’s question the need for raising taxes and continue to challenge that option. Government needs to be run like a business – period. Attempts to raise taxes must be transparent (not buried in some other referendum) and only after all other efforts to alleviate have been exhausted.

Engage with the under recognized areas of Burien. More attention needs to be placed on the neighborhoods that are not in the “hub” area. In addition, a better plan needs to be developed to complete Town Square – one that creates a vibrant core attracting more business, visitors and a landmark of which to be proud.

Burien is a fantastic place to live! I am excited to see it transcend from its current paralysis and emerge into the next stage of health, sustainability, vitality and intelligent growth. Together we can create a better form of government.

Commissioner Tracy has worked diligently over the years to achieve reduced rates for those on fixed and/or low income, to bring timely rehabilitation to both the aging conveyance system and treatment plants, and to the maintenance of a quality system and responsive customer service all the while keeping the rates among the lowest in our area.

Much of this has happened through his selection and appointment of a cohesive team of commissioners and the hiring of highly qualified management. Both of the current commissioners have since been elected to office.

Commissioner Tracy has also been recognized regionally where he has repeatedly been selected by industry peers to serve on the King County Regional Water Quality Committee. The State Association of Sewer and Water Districts has also formally recognized his years of leadership.

Original Publication 03.12.13: Another sad announcement for local and independent Burien businesses was made today: Fireweed Bead Co. in Olde Burien will soon be closing up shop.

Fireweed Bead Co. first opened their location in Olde Burien in 2002 and has been serving the region for 11 years, making it the longest continually running retail business in Olde Burien. The announcement of closure came Tuesday morning in the form of a letter to friends and patrons over social media.

According to the letter, the decision to close came after much thought and consideration over the continued decline in sales at their Olde Burien location while their online sales increased.

Fireweed will continue to maintain their normal business hours of Tuesday through Friday from 11am to 6pm, Saturday from 11am to 5pm and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm. Starting today, Fireweed will be offering 30% current inventory and will increase discounts as time goes on. The shop will have its final day of business when inventory is cleared out, which is expected to happen some time in mid May.

Since being found, these dogs have made a visit to the vet as well as the groomer and are ready for you to come and pay them a visit.

Original Publication 8:05 – 05.13.13: According to Sargent Cindi West of the King County Sheriffs Department, 8th Ave South and S 128th St in Burien are currently blocked as the result of a three vehicle accident that took place just after 7pm Monday evening.

The accident included 2 cars and a tow truck that was hauling an additional car. As seen in the photos to the right, the front end of the blue Honda is completely crushed, the front and back of the black Mercedes  have major damage. The tow truck, which pulled one car and towed another, ended up half way off the road in a yard on southwest corner of the intersection, only feet from a light pole and yards away from a home.

The driver of a blue Honda was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and is in currently in critical condition. A three year old, a passenger in the blue Honda, was brought to Harborview with a broken leg. The driver of the other car involved was also brought to a hospital but no information about their condition has been released. The driver of tow truck hauling an additional vehicle escaped the accident without any injury.

Martinez has been married since 1999 to Jackie Martinez and has two boys, both of whom attend Highline Public Schools. Martinez has volunteered for both of his boys sports teams in one way or another all their lives. He’s spent the last two years volunteering with the Burien Bearcats, first as an assistant coach then as the Head Coach for one of the teams.

Martinez has worked for Seattle City Light since 2007 and was recently promoted as supervisor to a new business unit within City Light IT. Martinez has also worked for the city of Auburn from 2001-2005.

Martinez was born in East Los Angeles, California and is a 1^st generation Mexican-American on his mother’s side and 3^rd generation on his fathers side. Joey is fluent in both English and Spanish, and Spanish is actually his first language.

Says Joey, “I am looking forward to working with you to Build a better Burien! Together, we can accomplish much if we stick together. My life experience as a father has taught me to be firm and patient, as a husband to listen and care, as a son to always work to improve myself, and as a friend to always be there. As a Burien Planning Commissioner I have also learned to think 20 years into the future and have come to see that actions taken today can impact us for generations.

Spending time both in and out of the public sector has prepared me to help us all Build a better Burien by learning what does and does not work in government. I have learned that government is of the people, for the people, and by the people and when we stick together and work together we can accomplish almost anything.

Burien is a great place to live, however, we’ve got a bum rap in the media. Every time you hear Burien in the news it is about an apartment fire or a shooting. When you hear about our kids they sound out of control.

With your help, I’d like to work with our police department  and give them the tools needed to tackle our issues. Working with you I want to give our youth more to do. More activities so they don’t get in trouble. More activities so they take pride in our community. And more activities so they can succeed in life.

If we can work together to accomplish these two items I believe it will go a long way to Building a better Burien. These two issues we need to tackle together are a major impediment to our future success in Building that better Burien.

There are many other issues I’d like to work on with you, like Storm Water issues and business retention, however I feel the policing and youth issues are the most pressing and needed to help solve our economic development problems.

Nearly 30 Highline High School students were treated to the maiden voyage of a Boeing 737 yesterday, May 6, flying one hour around Mount Rainier, on the new Alaska Airlines plane. This was the first time some students had flown. Other passengers included two Scout troops, the co-ed Venturing branch, and Chief Seattle Council. Joining them were King County Sheriff John Urquhart, Highline High School Resources Officer with the Burien Police Department Brian J. Barnes, Veronica Asence, Miss Seafair 2012-13, additional SeaFair staff and others.
The skies were clear, and the jet took off at Boeing Field and landed at Sea-Tac Airport.

“We’re here because the CEO of Alaska Airlines (Bradley D. Tilden) has taken delivery of the new plane (…) and we’ve been invited with Sheriff Urquhart to take a flight around Mount Rainier,” said Barnes. “The students are from Highline High School, and some are with the King County Sheriff’s Police Athletic Program.”

“I think this is so exciting to see all these kids have the chance to go on a brand new airplane, and for the adults, too,” said Sheriff Urquhart before boarding. “It’s so cool that Boeing does this.

“You don’t get a better officer than Brian,” Urquhart said of Barnes, who was raised in Boston. “He’s a perfect resource officer for all of us. Talk about ‘Boston Strong’, that’s Brian.”

“Boeing and Alaska Airlines have been longtime partners of Seafair,” said Beth Knox, Seafair President and CEO . “Alaska Airlines is the title sponsor of the Torchlight Parade and Boeing is the sponsor of the air show. They strongly believe in supporting local community events. We have absolute fantastic partnerships with them.”

She pointed out that that announcements about the Torchlight Parade will come later this week.

Flying the 737 was Alaska Airlines Captain Tom Rogers, pilot. “This is going to be a beautiful day for sightseeing,” he grinned. “This plane has probably flown about 10 hours with Boeing, and Boeing has checked it out and made sure it was all safe. They then handed it over today to Alaska Airlines for the very first trip.”

Rogers has been a pilot 34 years, about 24 of those with Alaska Airlines.

“This plane has an extended amount of seats, about 196 people, the 800 versions about 184, so a few more seats,” he said. “It has all the new RNP (required navigation performance) equipment, GPS-based to fly greener skies, and other modern computer updates. It’s a fabulous airplane. I’m very proud to fly these Boeing airplanes. I’ve flown a lot of different airplanes in my career and I really enjoy flying these.

“I am pumped up,” exclaimed Highline High School sophomore Andre Bundalo, who plays soccer for the school. “The gum is for my ears,” he said, chewing with purpose.

Senior Mariah Arbow said, I’m fine. I’m just nervous about flying.”

Added her classmate Daisy, who appeared confident with the aircraft, “My dad worked on this plane. He’s pretty proud of me. He just texted me.”

“I actually went to Highline and I’m still there, waiting to leave after 30-some years,” said the high school’s academic dean, Royce Badley, of Normandy Park. “I know Brad Tilden. He was in my class at Highline. He was really smart, a studious kid. He was a nice guy. We just had a reunion and we said ‘hi.’ Officer Barnes has done a great job, doing a lot for our students in criminal justice.”

Assistant Principal Paul Harvey added, “The students were selected either because they had aerospace interest or have done very well in school, so we have them coming as exploration and reward. We’re trying to push the girls to do science and technology.”

Several flight attendants were on board, including Susan Payne-Rao, whose name badge reads “Susan, committed to kindness.”

“Boeing has provided lunches for the kids,” she said, then quipped, “No martinis were being served on this flight.

“We will be walking around, talking to the kids,” she added. “We are going to make sure their flight is safe and comfortable. It’s like a brand new car inside. It’s beautiful.”
