Not that I'm planning on it, mind you, but the more I read and research about men and women who get addicted to murder, the more I see that it is not a wise lifestyle choice.

The Craig's List Killer obviously had some deep rooted problems, not the least of which was a penchant for killing. Paul LaRosa, the brilliant CBS News producer of 48 Hrs Mystery, has written a book about the case, SEVEN DAYS OF RAGE. I invited Paul to spend an hour on the air this Saturday with Don Woldman and me on TRUE CRIMES. At first Paul was a bit timid. Seems he had agreed to appear on some 90 minute talk show broadcast from some lady's kitchen table and it didn't go well. I assured Paul that TRUE CRIMES adhered to the highest broadcast standards -- well, as high as they can be when broadcast from an 1876 Virginia City style bar in Matt Alan's backyard. We have a worldwide audience -- I know that for a fact because we get email from England, New Zealand, Australia and even the USA.

So, this Saturday, November 14th, listen at 2pm Pacific time, 4pm Central, 5pm Eastern and 10pm UK for Paul LaRosa on True Crimes!

Not at Lee, but at this poor soul who was apparently unable to read the impressive list of Lee's books and television series. That doesn't mean that Lee has never experienced rejection -- and I don't only mean in the high school romance non fiction genre.

No one, not even your favorite best-selling author, has a 100% success rate, and all of us have our personal collection of rejection letters. If I get a rejection letter from one publisher -- especially a generic rejection -- I'm not dissuaded. If every house that respects my work unanimously deems the project off-the mark, , I say "thank you," and I mean it. Yes, thank you for not wasting your money and my time on a project that would only serve to disappoint my readers and, in the future, be a source of embarrassment.

Jodi Foster, Academy Award wining actress, once told me, "Every actor has a film that haunts their career from video store shelves." Authors are often more fortunate. As the old saying goes, "Rejection is Protection."

Returning to the theme of "self publishing."

There is something not right about my current book in progress, and it is driving me crazy. I've written about a dozen books, and I envisioned this one being my best in the true crime genre. I tried a more journalistic approach, putting things in the context of how America in general, and Texas in particular, handles homicides committed by those who teeter on the brink of "competent to stand trial." So far, at the request of my editor, I've done a complete restructuring of the book, and still it doesn't "sing."

Tomorrow I'm calling "headquarters" - the executive editor -- and consulting on what I need to do to make this baby at least hum. The story is super; the characters fascinating. Somewhere along the line I've lost the forward momentum. I have faith that it will all come together, but I've had my moments of professional doubt. I think it's the self-doubt that bothers me most of all. This isn't my first book, or even my fifth book. Why is this one fighting me? Have I lost it, or simply lost sight of what works best in the genre? Whatever the answer, I'm determined to transform this book into one of my best. In time, you will be the final judge. The title is Fatal Beauty, and it will see publication sometime in 2010. By the time it hits the shelves, it will be the book I had in mind, only better.

In the meantime, my New York Times best seller, Murder in the Family, has been re-released. Strangely enough, it was my first "serious" true crime book, and was far easier to write than the one I'm working on now. Let's all visualize Fatal Beauty being every bit as good as Murder in the Family.

Mickey Sherman asked me to call in to his live show SHERMAN'S LAW Thursdays 4:00-5:00 pm Eastern time on 1490 AM WGCH. What a kick! Mickey and I have no trouble getting on the same wavelength, and I had a blast. The show will be up in Mickey's archives soon, and I'll steal it and put it on my player as well. While I was talking to Mickey, I got a phone call from the Travis County District Attorney's Office. Obviously, I wasn't about to ignore the DA, so I put my daughter on with Mickey. No problem, as Anea is a broadcast pro herself. She was doing radio and television commercials when just a little kid, and has handled "traffic" for more than one radio station.
I have always loved radio, and the highlight of my week is co-hosting TRUE CRIMES on OUTLAW RADIO with Don Woldman, and then sticking around to play with Matt Alan and the Demons of Decadence in the Lighten Up Lounge.
I'll be back on the air LIVE this Saturday starting at 2pm Pacific time (10pm UK time). For info on our guest, check out the show's website.
Mickey Sherman was also a guest on True Crimes, and you can that show by clicking this link!

All rights reserved.
People rarely die from heroin overdoses — meaning pure concentrations of the drug which simply overwhelm the body's responses. People do die while consuming heroin — but the overdose myth may actually make such deaths more, rather than less, likely.

The first popular source to tell us about the myth of heroin overdose was the classic 1972 Consumer Union Report, Licit & Illicit Drugs, written by Edward M. Brecher. Brecher pointed out that, when street doses of heroin were far purer than they are today (China Cat and black-tar heroin scares notwithstanding), drug overdoses were practically unknown.

Brecher noted that heroin overdoses began to be reported in New York City after World War II, and accelerated into the 1970s. Yet the average purity of a street dosage prior to the War was 40 times the concentration of a 1960s dose.

Research at the Jefferson Medical Center in Philadelphia in the 1920s showed that addicts could tolerate up to a ninefold increase in the concentration of their standard, already large, dose. These researchers estimated that a toxic dose of heroin would be at least 500 milligrams for nonusers and 1800 milligrams for addicts.

In the 1960s, New York City Medical Examiners Drs. Milton Helpern and Michael Baden studied heroin addict deaths. Heroin found near dead addicts was not unusually pure and their body tissues did not show especially high concentrations of the drug. Although the addicts typically shot up in groups, only one addict at a time died. Furthermore, the dead addicts were experienced rather than novice users and therefore should have built up tolerance to large doses of heroin.

The best guess as to what was killing these addicts (aside from general infection, illness, and malnutrition) were the impurities in the drug, such as quinine, which produced adverse reactions in some injectors. A related likelihood which is more evident today is the mixture of drugs, or of drugs and alcohol.

Street lore among heroin addicts typically eschewed drinking alcohol with heroin as a potentially deadly combination. Today, drug cocktails as well as drinking while shooting up are common. The majority of drug deaths in an Australian study, conducted by the National Alcohol and Drug Research Centre, involved heroin in combination with either alcohol (40 percent) or tranquilizers (30 percent).

If it is not pure drugs that kill, but impure drugs and the mixture of drugs, then the myth of the heroin overdose can be dangerous. If users had a guaranteed pure supply of heroin which they relied on, there would be little more likelihood of toxic doses than occur with narcotics administered in a hospital.

But when people take whatever they can off the street, they have no way of knowing how the drug is adulterated. And when they decide to augment heroin's effects, possibly because they do not want to take too much heroin, they may place themselves in the greatest danger.

. Death by asphyxiation in one's vomit is common among people who mix alcohol with drugs, which often occurs at parties. Alcohol is more likely to cause people to puke, while additional drugs make the intoxicated individuals less able to stir themselves awake.

According to Dr. Laurence Gruer, addictions coordinator for the Greater Glasgow Health Board, "It is actually rare to find someone has died taking heroin alone — it has almost inevitably been taken as part of a cocktail with [tranquilizers] Temazepam or Valium."

Public officials can generally say any bad thing they want about illegal drugs. And they feel no doubt that labeling deaths as overdoses should scare most young people away from drugs. But this message may not have the desired effect. And its unintended consequences can be deadly. As the Australian National Research Centre made clear: "Both heroin users and service providers need to be disabused of the myth that heroin overdoses are solely, or even mainly, attributable to fluctuations in heroin purity."

Pringle potato chips used a strategy direct from the WWE playbook, but this time it didn't work. Years ago, the then WWF (World Wrestling Federation) became exempt from paying fees to, or meddling from, the New York State Wrestling Commission by essentially saying "We are not a true sports competition. This is entertainment only." Hence, World Wrestling Entertainment. This saved WWF/WWE tons of bucks and lord knows how much in possible payoffs to the "commission" whose job was, it seems to me, primarily to collect money on the most vague premise in regulatory history.

Pringles attempted the same smooth move recently to avoid a 15% value added tax in the UK by asserting that they were not really a potato chip (or crisps as called in UK), and were not actually a potato product. Proof of this claim was that the shape and texture of Pringles was "not found in nature." Besides that, potatoes only make up 42% of Pringles ingredients. This view prevailed last year, but Court of Appeals overruled that decision, saying that 42% was more than enough potato content to be considered potato chips/crisps.

Unlike conventional potato chips that are made from sliced potatoes, Pringles are made from potatoes that are cooked, mashed, dehydrated, and made into a dough. They are then cut out, shaped, and dried.

An interesting fact about Pringles Potato Crisps is, the man who invented their tubular cans was a Proctor & Gamble Co. organic chemist and food storage technician named Fredric J. Baur. He died on May, 4, 2008 in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the age of 89. The proud inventor requested that his cremated ashes be buried in a Pringles can. Baur's family honored his request by putting part of his remains in a can and burying them in his grave.
